'Scandal' Case Study: Jeff Perry Says Cyrus Has 'Blown Up His Marriage'

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/thumbnail_570x321/2013/11/scandal_dan_bucatinsky_jeff_perry.jpg" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>As one marriage continued to crumble, another was pushed to the brink during Thursday's Scandal. Meanwhile, Rowan's estranged wife Maya demanded to see her daughter and took things into her own hands in order to make it happen.</p><br /><p>During the hour, Olivia ( <strong>Kerry Washington</strong>) attempted to permanently cut her ties to Fitz ( <strong>Tony Goldwyn</strong>) but was unable to after seeing the <strike>McMansion</strike> dream house that the president had built for the future that he once saw for them. Olivia overlooks the fact that Fitz was responsible for shooting down the commercial airliner with her mother on board and the on-again, off-again duo are not just back but better -- and hotter -- than ever.</p><br /><p>Olivia, riding high after she and the president commit to find out the truth about why Rowan ( <strong>Joe Morton</strong>) ordered Fitz to shoot down the commercial airliner, comes face to face with her mother after Maya ( <strong>Khandi Alexander</strong>) escapes custody. As OPA continues to track leads to who killed the last link to Operation Remington, Huck ( <strong>Guillermo Diaz</strong>) figures out that Quinn ( <strong>Katie Lowes</strong>) was responsible and sets up shop -- torture tools and all -- in her apartment.</p><br /><p>Meanwhile, Cyrus ( <strong>Jeff Perry</strong>) is teaming with Mellie ( <strong>Bellamy Young</strong>) to out Sally's ( <strong>Kate Burton</strong>) husband Daniel ( <strong>Jack Coleman</strong>) -- and uses James ( <strong>Dan Bucatinsky</strong>) as the bait. Only their plan backfires and James -- who has figured out that Cy set him up with the cushy freelance gig to protect Fitz. Ultimately, Cy's plan appears to backfire after the photographer sends him exactly what he wanted -- and more: James and Daniel breaking their respective marital vows together.</p><br /><p>The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Perry to preview what's next for Cyrus and James.</p><br /><strong>PHOTOS: On-Set With the Gladiators: Inside the Fast-Paced World of ABC's 'Scandal'</strong> <strong>The insinuation that James cheated on Cyrus with Daniel is a big emotional blow for him. How does he feel after seeing these photos?</strong><br /><p>I think Cyrus' brain, in a horrifying two seconds, calculates that he has in a single, gigantic miscalculation, ruined Fitz's chance for re-election and blown up his marriage. It couldn't be worse.</p><br /><strong>Does Cyrus really believe that James slept with Daniel?</strong><br /><p>He believes he did, yes. He's got Mellie's warning ringing in his ears -- when she says 'You can't go back,' and Cyrus says -- semi-sensitively -- 'My husband isn't yours.' He would never cheat is the implication. It's been black and white to him: 'Oh my God, he did. And I set it up -- without any contingency plan.' That's a major miscalculation for Cyrus because he didn't believe there ever needed to be a contingency plan on that level of the scheme.</p><br /><strong>What does this say about Cyrus' family values? He risked his marriage for Fitz -- again putting the president above his own marriage.</strong><br /><p>He tremendously miscalculated and went at least a couple steps too far. Cyrus feeds Mellie this enticement to Daniel Douglas that he and James have an open marriage. If the previous steps of Cyrus' scheme weren't a step too far, that's the Achilles heel step that went too far because unbeknownst to Cyrus, James hears that from Daniel as well and it's really a revenge adultery moment: 'If you're going to use me like a whore, I'm going to act like a whore.'</p><br /><strong>Knowing what he does about Fitz and Olivia, did Cyrus expect James to be different?</strong><br /><p>It's a grievous miscalculation. No; it rather completely blindsides him.</p><br /><strong>PHOTOS: Nudity, Slapping, Pranks! 'Scandal' Cast Share Their Most Scandalous Moments</strong> <strong>Why wasn't Cyrus honest with James that he'd learned Daniel was gay and have James 'discover' that during his interview and use the press to discredit Sally? James is someone he can trust, why not try a more by the book approach to discrediting them?</strong><br /><p>Your exact question is pounding in his brain seconds after he looks at those pictures. I played this like a sneaky thief and Cyrus realizes that he should not have done that. It was a very cruel underestimation of James. He was someone he used when once in a while the truth will do better.</p><br /><strong>What might Cyrus do with the photos now that he appears to have the smoking gun? Will he sacrifice his own marriage in order to keep Fitz in the White House?</strong><br /><p>The problem for Cyrus on that level is that these [photos] are useless as blackmail, that he can't leverage Sally with them. Whether he will try to or not, I don't know. He almost had his husband assassinated in order to keep president in office but he drew a line there and said, 'Forget it, I'm out of work, Fitz is out of work, it'll blow up but I'm not killing my husband.' I don't think Cyrus quite knows how far he's willing to go. That was one demarcation but this is a different one.</p><br /><strong>James is now aware that his husband was using him to protect Fitz. How might James respond to how little Cyrus seems to value him?</strong><br /><p>Cyrus is horrified at how he would possibly justify or explain this one within the marriage. We leave Cyrus just horrified; I don't think he knows what to do.</p><br /><strong>In the past, James has been able to challenge Cyrus -- their naked showdown was legendary. James isn't willing to do that here and plays the same chess game with Cyrus. How will they try to outsmart the other?</strong><br /><p>When you go down that road, that's a cold war that is getting darker and colder. My guess is that's where they're headed: to a colder and darker war -- if they can even stay together.</p><br /><strong>Is this the beginning of the end of Cyrus and James' marriage?</strong><br /><p>Possibly. Cyrus desperately trying to fix stuff has suddenly made it possibly unfixable on both levels -- his marriage and Fitz's re-election.</p><br /><strong>PHOTOS: The Couples of Shondaland: 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Private Practice,' 'Scandal'</strong><br /><p><strong>Sounds like a job for Olivia Pope.</strong> <strong>Could Cyrus get Olivia on board to help fix his issues with James, Daniel and Sally? Mellie is ready to bring her back in now that Josie is out of the race.</strong> </p><br /><p>I have to think that's going through his head, yes. If Olivia came to him the next morning or he had a plan that included that necessity and Olivia could fix it. That's a given for me in Cyrus' make up: It's not personal ego that drives him -- he has plenty of it -- but ultimately it's strangely idealistic. Fitz can make a difference as a president if we can get through all the b.s. that he -- or <i>we</i> -- or our opponents have created. As for Cyrus' marriage, it's devastating. Emotionally, he's completely unmoored. James is the love of his life and it's deeply ironic that he's attacking Daniel for being closeted because he's been closeted much of his life. This is the first and real love of his life and with James, this is the first time Cyrus has been able self-esteem-wise to hold hands in public and say, 'I am married to a man.'</p><br /><strong>Despite being fired, James is still a savvy reporter. How will he use the information that Daniel is gay? Could he attempt to sell the story to another outlet?</strong><br /><p>Yes! James' expertise and ammunition as journalist would include that possibility.</p><br /><strong>How might Mellie respond to finding out that she may have been right about James betraying Cyrus? Does this make Cy respect Mellie a bit more?</strong><br /><p>In a bitterly sad way, yes.</p><br /><strong>In last week's episode, we saw the first time Cyrus -- then a married to a woman! -- meet Fitz and Olivia. Could we find out more about his coming out story at some point?</strong><br /><p>I wouldn't be surprised! I love when the writers chose to go into back history. Bishop Katharine says, “The heartbeat of the church is mission, mission, mission.” Ok, but what is it? Who made it up? And why does it matter?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">      The word “mission” has a lot of associations for church folks. It conjures up little Spanish buildings like the Alamo. It reminds us of mission churches on Native reservations. We think of mission trips to Africa. Mission has meant providing life saving health care and economic development. Mission has spread the good news of God’s love. “Publish glad tidings.” It has also been (usually unwittingly) a stalking horse for exploitation and oppression. The saintly Albert Schweitzer was followed by the colonial profiteer Cecil Rhodes. When some speak of the “missional church” these days, they are likely to mean loose associations of spiritual but not religious people meeting in secular locations to engage in spiritual discourses and rituals that are intentionally and emphatically “not Church, not religious, not institutional” etc. So when someone says “mission,” I listen closely to sniff out what – if anything – they mean.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">     That said, I believe the word is vitally important. So what does it really mean? It may help to put all our churchy associations with “mission” and on the shelf for a few minutes and start instead with a military association (sorry pacifists). In the military, the mission is what the team (unit, platoon, squadron, battalion, regiment, etc.) exists to do. The mission holds them together. They aren’t together as social friends. They share a common mission. Each member is willing to sacrifice himself to accomplish it. The mission is a group goal that is more important than anyone’s individual agenda. It is what must be done, no matter what. Mission has urgency about it. We lay down our preferences for it. We work with people we don’t necessarily even like for the sake of the mission.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">      When the Church speaks of Christ’s mission, it means God is up to something in the world and has entrusted the job to us. We are God’s agents. Right away, this challenges some common assumptions about Christianity. A lot of folks think it’s about individuals holding the right doctrinal opinions or experiencing the right religious feelings, and as a reward they go to heaven instead of hell. That is a very common view of Christianity. But it is surprising how little evidence you can find for that brand of religion in the Gospels, the Creeds, or the teachings of the Early Church. Instead we find a wealth of evidence that Jesus lived, died, and rose again to usher in something he called the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom is a radical reversal of the ways of the world, so that love instead of money makes the world go round, the first becomes last and the last first, the lion lays down with the lamb, the hungry are filled with good things and the rich are sent empty away. The Kingdom is so different from our ordinary experience that Jesus can only point toward it with provocative surprise ending zinger stories (parables, “The Kingdom of God is like . . . ..” Even Jesus could not say what the Kingdom is, only that it is like this or like that. But it is like something surprising and joyful and utterly new. Being the vanguard for a new way of living is a tall task. “If anyone is in Christ, look! A new creation!” It’s a big, big deal. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">      When congregations fall into a moldy habit of meeting regularly, just trying to keep the doors open, offering each other spiritual support, but not engaging the world outside their walls, they are apt to do little harm in the world – but they are not engaged in the mission. They may be Christians in their beliefs but they are deserters in their common life. As a result, not much happens in their souls. The mission changes people’s lives by giving them a whole new purpose “to live not for self alone but for him who lived and died for us.”<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">       So just what is the mission? My way of finding it is to take the Gospels and stack them up against the on-the-ground situation in which we live. What does the Gospel tell us about human trafficking, domestic violence, pandemics, poverty, environmental degradation, the threat of genocide in the Central African Republic? We are the Body of Christ. What does the Body of Christ do in the face of such things? Karl Barth began each day reading the Bible and the newspaper – together. Not a bad way to find the Kingdom mission.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">      For those who want to have the answer spelled out a bit clearer in advance, we have some guides from the Church. We might start with the Catechism. The mission of the Church is “to reconcile all people to God and each other in Christ.” The world is spiritually bleeding to death from the wounds of broken relationships. We have been given the job of healing those wounds. Who is at odds in the world today? The Church’s job is to bring them together and make peace. If we don’t know how to do that, it’s our job to learn. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">      Another helpful guide is the Five Marks of Mission adopted by the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion:<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">1. Proclaim the gospel (evangelism)<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">2. Baptize and nurture new beliers (sacraments & education)<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">3. Merciful service to those in need (charity)<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">4. A congregational meeting or a vestry might have a good World Café style discussion asking two questions:<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">1. What are we doing on each of the marks of mission?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">2. What could we do on each of the marks of mission that we are not     doing now?<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">I suspect most churches would find that they are already doing more on each of the marks than they know. I am positive any church that dares ask these questions would find interesting, even fun, new ways to go about making the path straight for Christ and his Kingdom.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">        This may be a heresy to the dogmas of modern management. But I don’t put that much stock in “mission statements.” I don’t put that much stock in any strategic plan if it was made over four months ago. But I believe everything depends on our asking earnestly and often what we are doing and what we intend to do in the immediate future to overturn the ways of the world with the ways of God. What are we doing to connect people with Jesus? What are we doing now, this month, to teach people authentic Christianity as distinguished from the imposter religion that has stolen our identity and wrecked our reputation? Who is hurting that needs our tangible material kindness? What injustice is hiding in the shadows needing to be exposed and reversed? What part can we play in restoring balance to our God-given eco-system? We may not come up with the right answers. We may not be able to act on the answers we come up with. But we can at least ask the right questions – ask them often and ask them seriously.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><!--EndFragment-->

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Originally published November 21, 2013 at 9:10 PM | Page modified November 21, 2013 at 10:06 PM</p><br /><img src="http://seattletimes.com/ABPub/2013/11/21/2022309145.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p><img src="http://seattletimes.com/art/ui/1024/v_2011/icons/enlarge.gif" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>Elsa / Getty Images</p><br /><p>NEW YORK - The Huskies entered Thursday's 2K Sports Classic semifinal intent on stopping Indiana touted freshman Noah Vonleh.</p><br /><p>However, the Hoosiers' other freshman, starting forward Troy Williams, proved to be their undoing.</p><br /><p>The 6-foot-7 big man scored a career-high 22 points to shoot down Washington, which fell 102-84 at Madison Square Garden.</p><br /><p>The loss extends UW's losing streak at MSG to six and drops its record there to 1-6.</p><br /><p>The Huskies (2-2) return Friday to face Boston College in a 2 p.m. consolation game. The Golden Eagles fell to 1-4 after losing 72-70 to No. 18 Connecticut in the semifinals.</p><br /><p>Despite its four-guard lineup, Washington had hoped to contain Indiana's big front line with a 2-3 zone. Williams, Vonleh and 6-foot-7 forward Will Sheehey had other plans.</p><br /><p>The trio battered the smaller Huskies with an array of dunks that seemingly never stopped.</p><br /><p>Williams soared for a couple of acrobatic tomahawk jams. Vonleh, who had 18 points, flushed several putbacks. And Sheehey (16 points) got loose on the baseline for a pair of two-handed dunks.</p><br /><p>When the Indiana trio wasn't rattling the rim, Kevin 'Yogi' Ferrell punished the Huskies with 20 points and seven assists.</p><br /><p>The Hoosiers enjoyed a 51-30 rebound advantage.</p><br /><p>Wilcox finished with a game-high 24 points, which kept Washington afloat for most of the first half.</p><br /><p>However, Indiana led by 13 at halftime and never let the Huskies pull any closer than seven points in the second half.</p><br /><p>Washington received 14 points each from Perris Blackwell and Andrew Andrews.</p><br /><p>Nigel Williams-Goss had 13 and Mike Anderson 11 before fouling out.</p><br /><p>The Huskies committed turnovers on two of their first three possessions and Indiana sank its first three shots to start the game with a 9-0 run.</p><br /><p>Washington battled back and pulled to within two points (19-17) before the Hoosiers pulled away again with a 10-2 spurt to build a 10-point advantage (29-19) with 9:34 left.</p><br /><p>The Huskies never got any closer than eight points in the first half and Indiana closed the period with a 4-0 run to take a 50-37 lead into halftime.</p><br />Percy Allen: 206-464-2278 or pallen@seattletimes.com. 'Macbeth,' With Ethan Hawke at the Vivian Beaumont

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/11/22/arts/22JPMACBETH/JPMACBETH-articleLarge.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>It's the Witches' world. Macbeth just lives in it.</p><br /><p>That's the only sensible conclusion to be drawn from Jack O'Brien's dark and dismal new production of 'Macbeth,' which opened on Thursday night at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, starring Malcolm Gets, John Glover and Byron Jennings as the Witches. (The production also features a lost soul named Ethan Hawke in the title role, but let's not distract ourselves from the main event.)</p><br /><p>And you thought this briskest of Shakespeare's tragedies (well, usually it is) was about 'vaulting ambition which o'erleaps itself' and all that other poetic psychological stuff. Nope. As interpreted in this Lincoln Center Theater production, 'Macbeth' is the story of three Weird - seriously weird - Sisters, as the Witches are fondly known, who get their kicks moving around and tearing up human beings like nasty little girls who decapitate their paper dolls.</p><br /><p>The witches are themselves in thrall to an evil mistress, Hecate, the queen of night. She has been given a greatly expanded role here (with a speech that may have been interpolated by Shakespeare's contemporary Thomas Middleton) and is portrayed by Francesca Faridany in demented Lady Gaga glad rags. But it's her minions' progress that gives this show its through line.</p><br /><p>Played with down-and-dirty glee, and more than a touch of camp by Messrs. Gets, Glover and Jennings, the witches show up in different guises to propel the doom of a certain bewildered Scotsman. Their incarnations include a wounded soldier, a drunken porter (Mr. Glover, who sports sagging breasts) and various lords of the court.</p><br /><p>If you are otherwise bored, you can always divert yourself by playing a sort of satanic 'Where's Waldo?' game as you try to spot the Witches in their latest human camouflage. Lest you have any doubts about what shapes fate here, the very stage has been rendered (by the designer Scott Pask) as a big black mandala, a Kaballah-inspired talisman from the late Middle Ages. Destiny, as well as spiritual hierarchy, is etched in its boards.</p><br /><p>Within this forbidding context, individual motivation doesn't count for much, which means character takes a back seat to mystical symmetry. That atmosphere is summoned in a glamorous style that crosses the sensibilities of German Expressionism and the 'Hellraiser' horror movies by a team that includes Japhy Weideman (lighting), Mark Bennett (music and sound), Catherine Zuber (who did the era-melding costumes) and Jeff Sugg (projections).</p><br /><p>If any of the characters were asked to answer for their bloody deeds, they would have an all-purpose response: 'The Witches made me do it.' Under the circumstances, this ready-made explanation is a godsend, or a devilsend, since few of the performers - including Daniel Sunjata as a vigorous Macduff, Brian d'Arcy James as a hearty Banquo and Anne-Marie Duff as a walking fashion photo op of a Lady Macbeth - give you a clue as to why their characters act as they do.</p><br /><p>Though best known as a movie star, Mr. Hawke has demonstrated his stage-worthiness in shows that include David Rabe's 'Hurlyburly' (which, O his prophetic soul, has a 'Macbeth'-citing title!) and two epics for Mr. O'Brien at Lincoln Center, 'The Coast of Utopia' and 'Henry IV.' His Macbeth, alas, is swallowed up by the prevailing shadows and spectacle.</p><br /><p>Mr. Hawke, in turn, swallows many of his lines. His is a mumblecore Macbeth, an heir to the petulant Hamlet he played on screen 13 (ooh, 13) years ago. He delivers Shakespeare's poetry like a moody, glue-sniffing teenager reciting Leonard Cohen lyrics to himself.</p><br /><p>He exudes a matching adolescent snarkiness, giving a sarcastic spin to his words. Considering his imminent murder of Duncan (Richard Easton) and the compunction that might stay his hand, he snarls at the idea of pity stepping in 'like a naked newborn babe.'</p><br /><p>A charitable interpretation might be Macbeth already knows the game is fixed, and any suggestion it might be otherwise has to be sneered at. But, hooded in impenetrable sullenness, he never gives us entry to an interior life with which we might identify.</p><br /><p>Such opacity makes playing Mrs. Macbeth hard sledding. (When she tells him his face is like 'an open book,' you have to stifle a guffaw.) And I feel bad that this should be the Broadway debut for Ms. Duff, a wonderful London stage actress whose credits include a very exciting Saint Joan (per Shaw).</p><br /><p>Here, she appears to have translated her latest London star turn as the neurotic heroine of O'Neill's 'Strange Interlude,' into iambic pentameter. Her Lady Macbeth is as high strung as an overbred whippet. She has a whippet's lean frame, too, and looks smashing in the strapless black evening gowns she favors as casual at-home wear.</p><br /><p>Come to think of it, the entire production looks so darn chic that pretty much any scene could be frozen and slid into the glossy well of Vogue magazine. (How about that banquet table, huh?) The predominant color scheme is black, white and blood red, the shade of a first-act centerpiece of flowers that magically shed their petals when events turn nasty. Macbeth models a gorgeous red bathrobe for the morning after Duncan's murder, which he exchanges for gold and silver raiment once he becomes king.</p><br /><p>But no matter the attire, all foolish mortals here are so obviously doomed to be devoured by infernal darkness that you wonder why they bother getting up in the morning. This 'Macbeth' could be regarded as a sort of evil twin to Julie Taymor's more appropriately spectacle-driven 'Midsummer Night's Dream,' in which otherworldly forces manipulate worldly pawns.</p><br /><p>I might have had more patience for this novelty at another time. But the triumphantly straightforward Shakespeare's Globe productions of 'Twelfth Night' and 'Richard III' now on Broadway, which trust so completely in the original words, make this 'Macbeth' seem ponderous and gaudy. Turning Pro at 16 and Finding Work Isn't So Bad

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/11/22/sports/Y-GOLF/Y-GOLF-articleLarge.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>NAPLES, Fla. - In anticipation of her professional debut, Lydia Ko met with Phil Mickelson last week during a visit to the Callaway headquarters in California. Ko, a South Korean-born New Zealander, is ranked fifth in the world and would have made nearly $1 million in prize money had she turned pro at the start of the year.</p><br /><p>During their conversation, Ko mentioned that she and her mother, Tina, were looking for a home in the United States to cut down on travel. She said Mickelson, a five-time major champion who lives in California, gave her a valuable piece of advice. 'Phil mentioned that one of his biggest mistakes was staying after college where the taxes are quite high,' she said.</p><br /><p>So the 16-year-old Ko will narrow her search, she said, to places where there is no state income tax, although she was quick to add, 'I don't have any money yet.'</p><br /><p>Ko's first paycheck is a mere formality. There is no cut in this week's Titleholders event, the L.P.G.A. Tour's season finale, and Ko got off to a solid start at Tiburon Golf Club with a one-under-par 71, seven strokes behind the leader, Sandra Gal. Ko, the winner of this year's Canadian Open, turned pro in October and successfully petitioned the L.P.G.A. to waive its minimum age requirement of 18 for tour membership.</p><br /><p>Whenever teenagers are thrust into the grown-up world of commerce, there are fears that their adolescences will be trampled by the adults in their midst. But in Ko's case, by turning professional she is getting both a paycheck and a piece of her childhood back. In her last two years as an amateur, she spent so much time traveling for tournaments that she never had the chance to socialize with her peers at home.</p><br /><p>On the tour, Ko can spend time with friends at the mall on off days or go to the movies with them at night, giving her a built-in social scene she did not have.</p><br /><p>'Those Friday movie nights or normal teenager things, I kind of missed that many years ago,' Ko said. 'But when I'm on tour, actually I get more time to go to the movies and watch the movies I wanted to watch back at home.'</p><br /><p>And if she is hungry for peer companionship, Ko will not have to search far. Joining her in the top 10 in the women's world rankings is Lexi Thompson, 18, from Florida, who has won twice this year. There are also Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn, who turns 18 on Saturday, and Charley Hull, 17, of Britain, who figure to compete in several L.P.G.A. tour events next year as nonmembers.</p><br /><p>In five starts this year, Jutanugarn collected a second and two thirds and did not finish lower than fourth. Hull, who starred for the European team at the Solheim Cup, is sixth on the Ladies European Tour's Order of Merit.</p><br /><p>Ko's impact transcends golf. She was recently included in Time magazine's list of the world's 16 most influential teenagers, appearing at No. 2, behind a countrywoman, the pop star Lorde, and two spots ahead of the American swimmer Missy Franklin.</p><br /><p>'I don't even know why I'm there, to be honest,' Ko said. 'I don't know what I've really done. I've just done the things I love to do.'</p><br /><p>But for Ko, the first seven holes Thursday were as close as golf gets to drudgery. Her strength is her accuracy off the tee, but her third drive landed in pine needles left of the fairway. She tried to hook her second shot around trees but grazed some Spanish moss on her backswing, and her ball clipped a branch before landing in a waste area short of the green.</p><br /><p>'I think I was a bit too ambitious,' said Ko, who failed to clear the waste area with her third shot, found the green with her fourth and two-putted for a double-bogey 6.</p><br /><p>At the par-4 seventh, Ko three-putted from 12 feet for a bogey that dropped her to three over par. At that point, she was nine strokes behind Gal, who started on the back nine and was six under. Ko made her first birdie as a pro at the par-3 eighth, which she said had a calming effect.</p><br /><p>'It definitely helped,' said Ko, who added three birdies on the back to break par.</p><br /><p>If anybody could relate to what Ko was going through, it was her first-round playing partner, Michelle Wie, who turned pro in 2005, shortly before her 16th birthday.</p><br /><p>'I think she handled it great,' Wie said.</p><br /><p>As they made their way around the course, Wie shared with Ko details of her pro debut at the Samsung World Championship, in particular the terror she felt as she stood over her first drive.</p><br /><p>Ko recalled hearing the story from Wie but could not remember when during the round the conversation took place.</p><br /><p>'It was pretty hectic,' she said, apologetically.</p><br /><p>Karen Stupples, a one-time major winner who is reporting on the tournament for Golf Channel, interviewed Ko after she signed her scorecard. While waiting to go on air, Stupples praised Ko for keeping her composure after her wobble on the third hole.</p><br /><p>'After that, you could have gotten a little shaky,' Stupples said. 6 Ways to Stop Escalating Fights With Your Partner [ BeritaTerkini ]

I’m not even sure what we were fighting about but it kept escalating and got really ugly.”</p> <p>“I don’t know what to do when my wife starts in on me. No matter what I say, she’s like a dog with a bone. I can’t get her to stop attacking me.”</p> <p>“I can tell by the look on his face that I’m in for it. My husband is relentless when he is trying to have control over getting me to do something his way. I hate it and I don’t know what to do about it.”</p> <p>I hear these statements over and over from my clients.</p> <p>Most people, when growing up, had no good role modeling regarding how to keep a fight from escalating.</p> <p>Most couples fight occasionally, and that’s fine. Sometimes a good fight will clear the air of issues that haven’t been resolved, and the fight may open the door to resolution. But too often fights escalate into ugliness, and this is very detrimental to a relationship.</p> <p>Issues can get resolved fairly quickly and easily when both partners are open to learning about themselves and each other, and finding a win-win resolution.</p> <p>However, if one or both of you are intent on controlling, which is generally the case with anger and blame, no win-win resolution can occur.</p> <p>Sometimes, if one person is angry and the other person stays open to learning, the angry partner will calm down and you can then discuss the issue.</p> <p>Here are six healthy ways of keeping a fight from escalating:</p> <p><strong>1. Touch your partner with gentleness and compassion.</strong><br> If you know that your partner is the kind of person who responds to loving touch, then reaching to touch or hug your partner might bring about a softening. However, some people will resist being touched when they are triggered into their anger and blame, so if you know this about your partner, this is not a good strategy.</p> <p><strong>2. Use humor.</strong><br> Sometimes, if the disagreement hasn’t gone too far, lightly saying something like, “I bet if you yell just a little louder you can have control over me,” or putting on some music and saying, “Let’s dance,” may jog your partner out of a wounded place and into laughter. Sometimes just laughing and saying, “Here we go again,” can do wonders. Of course, this depends on how determined your partner is to fight with you and control you. If you know ahead of time that this is likely to enrage him or her more, then clearly this is not a good thing to try.</p> <p><strong>3. Listen attentively and move into a compassionate intent to learn.</strong><br> Sometimes your partner just needs to be heard. If you listen with genuine interest and ask questions from a real desire to learn about why he or she is so upset, this might calm your partner down enough to talk about the issue. You might want to say something like, “I’m interested in hearing you and understanding what you are upset about, but I have a hard time listening when you are so angry. Can you tell me the same thing without the attack?”</p> <p>However, if you are open and your partner remains closed and continues to attack and blame, then you need to do something else. Staying in the line of fire will likely eventually escalate the fight.</p> <p><strong>4. Speak your truth and move into a compassionate intent to learn.</strong><br> Saying something like, “It hurts me and scares me when you treat me like this. I love you and I want to connect with you. Can we talk about this instead of fighting about it?” may open the door to learning and resolution. Or, saying something like, “It sounds to me that you are trying to control me. Is that your intent?” might give your partner a moment of pause.</p> <p>However, when your partner is in a wounded state, he or she might not care about the fact that their behavior is hurting you or that they just want to control you. In fact, when people are in a scared and wounded state, they might want to hurt you or feel justified in trying to control you. When this is the case, then one of the next two ways will be helpful.</p> <p><strong>5. Speak your truth and then lovingly disengage.</strong><br> Speaking your truth means saying something like, “It’s not okay with me to be treated like this, so I’m going for a walk (or going in another room).” Then you need to lovingly disengage, which means leaving to take care of yourself, not withdrawing in anger to punish your partner. The point of lovingly disengaging is to get out of the line of fire and take care of your own feelings — such as the loneliness and heartache of being treated badly, and the helplessness you feel over your partner’s behavior. By keeping your heart open and compassionately tending to your own feelings, you will be ready to let it go ad re-engage, or explore the conflict if your partner eventually opens to learning with you.</p> <p><strong>6. Remain silent and lovingly disengage.</strong><br> Sometimes saying anything fuels the flames of a fight, so it may be best to not say anything at all and just walk away.</p> <p>In order to lovingly disengage, you need to let go of believing that there is something you can say or do that will get your partner to be open and kind. If you’ve tried to compassionately engage with your partner and he or she remains angry and blaming, then you need to accept that there is nothing you can do to get your partner to open. Accepting your helplessness over your partner may be challenging for you. Your partner likely knows exactly what to say to trigger your hurt and anger and then the two of you go at it. (USATSI) Dwight Howard has been called a lot of things over the past couple years, but Vince Carter is taking his turn at it now.</p><br /><p>Via ESPN Dallas, Carter exchanged words with Howard during the Mavericks' 123-120 win over the Rockets on Wednesday, telling the Houston big man he was 'the biggest crybaby I know.'</p><br /><p>And Carter didn't lay off when asked about it postgame.</p><br /><p>'All the time,' Carter said when asked about Howard's complaining. 'He always talks about how I'm a crybaby. I was like, 'Yo, you're the biggest crybaby I know.' And then later, he's like, 'Yo, why'd you say that to me?' But I know Dwight. It's all good, but he is [a crybaby]. 'I mean, he takes a lot of punishment, but I'm like, 'Yo, c'mon Dwight, c'mon. You elbowed, you're sitting in the paint the entire time. Weiner, head of players union, dies at 51

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://mlb.mlb.com/assets/images/0/3/2/64119032/cuts/AP_Michael_Weiner_1280_47ovar6r_9hgd4y6d.jpg" width="600"/><br /><p>NEW YORK -- During one of his last public appearances as his health precipitously declined, Michael Weiner told a group of reporters how he viewed life during his battle with non-operable brain cancer.</p><br /><p>'What I look for every day is beauty, meaning and joy. And if I can find beauty, meaning and joy, then that's a good day,' the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association said in the hours leading up to the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field. 'I'll live each day for those things. And I'll live each day looking for those things. Because I don't know how much time I'll have.'</p><br /><p>With his family by his side at his home, Weiner lost his battle with gliobastoma on Thursday, the union said. He was 51. Wheelchair-bound and paralyzed on his right side because of the affects of the tumor, Weiner never lost hope. He underwent months of chemotherapy and radiation following his diagnosis in August 2012 and when those remedies were deemed unhelpful, he went on to an experimental regimen prescribed by his oncologists at New York's Columbia University Medical Center that he said taxed his body and sapped his energy.</p><br /><p>Nevertheless, Weiner worked on union issues until he was incapable of doing so, having a firm hand in MLB's Biogenesis investigation involving performance-enhancing drug use, a prominent subject during the more-than-four-year tenure of Weiner and that before him of Don Fehr, now the executive director of the National Hockey League Players Association.</p><br /><p>The erudite Weiner openly spoke about his illness, appearing publicly at All-Star events and the next day at a golf tournament to provide relief for the victims of last year's Superstorm Sandy that devastated the East Coast.</p><br /><p>Weiner practiced the advice he gave others suffering through debilitating diseases.</p><br /><p>'It's corny, but it works. Stay positive,' he said in March 2013 as he concluded the union's exhaustive schedule of visiting with all 30 clubs during Spring Training. 'I tell everybody this: I don't fear whatever is going to happen to me. Medically, I'm either going to have good results or I'm going to have bad results. And once you don't have fear of that, you can go on living life to the fullest. If you're afraid every time you turn around the corner, it's pretty hard to enjoy life. So I tell people, 'Try to get over whatever fear you have. Do what you have to do medically and do what you can to fight it. And then go on and enjoy life the best you can.''</p><br /><p>Weiner was elected the union's fifth executive director on Oct. 2, 2009, replacing Fehr, who gave notice earlier that year of his intention to retire in March 2010. When the players voted to approve Weiner's rise to the post, they did so by a margin of 1,055-4. The players embraced Weiner and marveled at his courage and posture as he battled a type of tumor that is 99-percent fatal.</p><br /><p>'Michael has been at my side during all the battles we have fought over the last 20 years and has been a major part of our successes,' Fehr said at the time of Weiner's election.</p><br /><p>Weiner, a 1986 graduate of Harvard Law School, had been with the Players Association since 1988. He originally was the staff counsel, with the primary responsibility of administering and enforcing the Basic Agreement. Named general counsel in 2004, he was placed in charge of all legal matters involving the association.</p><br /><p>Weiner, Fehr, chief operating officer Gene Orza and Steve Fehr, Don's brother, had formed the backbone of the union for years, following Marvin Miller's longtime tenure as union leader, as the the players and owners fought through three work stoppages and the average salary for players rose from $289,000 in 1983 to more than $3.3 million.</p><br /><p>There has been relative labor peace since 1995, though that group is now all gone. Orza is retired and Steve Fehr followed his brother to the NHLPA.</p><br /><p>As the previous Basic Agreement was approaching its expiration in December 2011, and Weiner led the union into an intricate line-by-line review and rewriting of the document, which took a good part of that year. The Joint Drug Agreement, which was implemented in 2002, has been reopened, reviewed and adjusted a number of times under Weiner's auspices. The Basic Agreement signed that year runs through 2016, ensuring at least 21 consecutive years of labor peace.</p><br /><p>There is a yearly review of the program and Weiner had said that the current PED penalties for an analytical positive test -- a 50-game loss of salary and suspension for the first offense, 100-game salary loss and suspension for a second offense, and a lifetime suspension for a third -- were open to revision.</p><br /><p>Weiner, born in Paterson, N.J., earned his undergraduate degree in political economy from Williams College in 1983, and after graduating from Harvard Law School three years later, spent 1986-88 as a clerk for a federal judge in Newark, N.J.</p><br /><p>Barry M.
