Examples of such software could be third-party spam filters and plug-ins for Mail and related services, even firewalls that might interfere with network connections that Mail is trying to make.</p><br /><p>While for the most part third-party software isn't likely to stop working, it is possible, so if you experience problems after installing the update, that's one place to check.</p><br /><p>After installing the update and relaunching the program, Mail may update your inboxes or show a Welcome to Mail screen; then you should be able to access your messages again.</p><br /><p>The Mail update is available through Apple's Software Update service, which can be accessed in the Apple menu in OS X Mavericks. The cloud-based technology keeps the Safari browser's passwords and credit card data in sync across all your Apple devices.</p><br /><p>Secondly, in Spotlight, the device's internal search engine, Apple has brought back the ability to search Google and Wikipedia from the results. The two services were removed when iOS 7 was first released in mid-September.</p><br /><p>The software update applies to the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and the two new smartphones, the iPhone 5c and 5s. It's also available for the iPad 2, the third and fourth generation iPads, iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad mini with Retina Display. Fourth and fifth generation iPod touch models also receive the update.</p><br /><p>Also on Thursday, Apple released a corresponding update to its Apple TV, updating the set-top box to version 6.0.2.</p><br /><p>Users can update to the latest version by accessing the device's Settings, selecting General, then Software Update. Microsoft likes to brag that the new version handily beats the latest Chrome on the WebKit SunSpider JavaScript benchmark – and it did in our tests, too – but these things are subjective. On Google's more comprehensive, application-based Octane 2.0 benchmark – just released – Chrome soundly drubs IE11 in nearly every test.</p><br /><p>IE11 also boasts improved support for web standards, including some new ones that weren't included in previous versions. It offers support for hardware-accelerated 3D graphics and HTML5 video without plugins, and it has beefed up its internal web development tools.</p><br /><p>But perhaps the one glaring advantage IE11 has over its competitors is that Microsoft has poured a lot of effort into making it touch-friendly, and in your humble <em>Reg</em> hack's opinion, IE11 really is easier to work with on a touchscreen device than its competitors. A New Workflow for Me: Ipad, Keyboard, iPhone

This morning, I couldn't find my PC for a bit, but I wasn't really worried because I have a new workflow. Oh, but I sat down to work the "new way" (See the picture below) and I saw my PC underneath a book on the end table by the couch where I'd left it four days a go. This keyboard makes my iPad feel like a PC. I don't use the mouse because I use my fingers and the screen rotates either way for those apps like <a href="http://www.vickidavis.me/">Tumblr </a>and <a href="http://www.bufferapp.com/">Buffer </a>that don't have a good version for the iPad that swaps from portrait to landscape.<br /><br />The form factor of my computing has changed. Meanwhile, I am ready to interact with my TV, and, as I mentioned on my blog last week, the best interface for doing that is the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.xbox.com/kinect/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Kinect">Kinect</a> Operating system on my son's Xbox 360. <br /><br /><h3>1 hour later...</h3>Finally, I had to just force my PC to shut down because there was nothing I could do-- it looks like it was updating another Windows Update. Even though I keep my computer updated, when one of those comes down the pipe, I can pretty much interrupt what I'm doing. The way I update my iPad just makes so much more sense - I see the note that it wants an update, and I do it when there is time.<br /><br />I write this blog post in the flow of working to make a point that my workflow has changed dramatically. Now, if I have something I HAVE to do on a PC, I tend to use <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.splashtop.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Splashtop">Splashtop</a> streamer to remote into the PC and do whatever I have to do. I've been pondering getting a Mac and may still do it at some point, but at least 85% of what I want to do can be done right here on my ipad. The form factor of this keyboard makes it so much like a regular keyboard that the pesky typos that happen when I type on the ipad screen are not as frequent. <br /><br /><h3>Traveling is more productive</h3>Yesterday, coming home in the car from church, I turned on my iPhone's hot spot, connected my ipad, and used the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.powerschool.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="PowerSchool">PowerTeacher</a> app to update grades and respond to emails. <br /><br /><h3>The keyboard makes the difference.</h3>I think it is a combination of having an iPhone, iPad, and a drop dead incredible keyboard that makes this work for me. (As well as some awesome apps.) I can't stress enough the keyboard part. This is my third keyboard. The first keyboard was too small for my hands and had the apostrophe in the wrong place, the second keyboard wasn't firm enough to have in my lap.<br /><br /><h3>2 days later...</h3>Update. I finished this post on my PC in the office because the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.zemanta.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Zemanta">Zemanta</a> plug in I use is just too easy and too powerful. I draft most of my posts now on my ipad and then polish up here in a few minutes.<br /><br />Now, you have a post and a glimpse into the workflow of a fellow blogger. I have seen the trim rubbed completely off houses! But hey, you do get lots of free fertilizer!<br /><br />One other very important item. Title. KNOW the facts about Titles. The launch date window was published on Australian carrier Telstra’s website, which said the HTC One on its network would be receiving Android 4.2.2 as early as July 22. Quick update

<p>Happy hump day everyone! Hope you’re all having a great week. Thanks for your encouragement on my <a href="http://weightloss-stories.blogspot.com/2011/08/time-to-get-serious.html">post</a> last week! I know I can do this, just have to take one day at a time. I thought I’d give ya’ll a quick update.</p> <p>Monday I started week 3 of the C25K. It was a 5 minute warm up walk and then 2 reps of the following: 90 second jog, 90 second walk, 3 minute jog, and, 3 minute walk. I was nervous about running for 3 minutes of running (compared to the 90 seconds during week 2), but I didn’t have a problem with it. Now don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a walk (run…ha ha!) in the park. But I found it do-able! Tonight I plan to go out and do day 2.</p> <p>Eating hasn’t been the best the past few days. Monday was my birthday (I’m 27!) and of course with birthdays come birthday cake! The black-and-white nontouch display and bare-bones geek charm of the original Pebble will remain. Instead, Pebble will get a bevy of software and app updates, along with a brand-new SDK that promises the types of apps we'd hoped would be on the Pebble when it was first announced.</p><br /><div style='width: 610px' class='cnet-image-div image-LARGE2 float-none'><img alt="" class="cnet-image" height="458" src="http://asset2.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim2/2013/11/05/PebblenotifieriOS_610x458.jpg" width="610"/> </div><br /><p><b>iPhone owners finally get notifications galore</b><br/><br />The first big news is for iOS. The Pebble is getting a software update today for iOS 7 that finally allows it to access all application notifications, much like Android phones already allow: your Starbucks app, eBay, weather, or whatever you can imagine will ping the Pebble. Until now, the Pebble only allowed texts, e-mail notifications, and incoming call information on an iPhone.</p><br /><p>I tested an early-release build of the new iOS 7-compatible software, and the differences are subtle: any app that shows notifications on an iPhone can display that same notification on the Pebble, you just have to set that app's notifications to "banner mode" in the settings. The Starbucks app showed my balance when I bought something, and I started getting Facebook comments and Twitter direct messages, too.</p><br /><p>The added notifications are welcome and sometimes quite useful, but beware of over-loading: multiple simultaneous notifications can be browsed with side buttons, but after a short while the notifications drop off the Pebble completely, never to be seen again. It's more of a pager than a notification repository.</p><br /><p><b>New apps: Fitness trackers, offline storage</b><br/><br />The Pebble Watch has always had more tech in it than its apps have taken advantage of, in particular, a three-axis accelerometer and Bluetooth LE.</p><br /><p>That's why the newly announced version 2.0 SDK is theoretically exciting: it will finally allow developer access to the Pebble's built-in tech. Apps will be able to use the accelerometer, log data, store data even when not connected to a phone, and pull data from the phone's Internet connection on their own. That means possible fitness apps, standalone weather or transit apps, and many of, hopefully, the sort of truly useful apps that the Pebble has lacked.</p><br /><p>But the Pebble's own limitations are unclear: will multitasking be possible? Also, just like before, the Pebble will only store eight apps at a time. How much data one of these apps can store also isn't exactly clear, but Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky suggested in a briefing with CNET that a fitness app could, for instance, store up to "days" of data.</p><br /><p>The SDK will be made available now, but that doesn't mean everyone will get new apps right away. Pebble is allowing a few weeks for existing apps to get updated to be compatible with the new SDK. After that, a Pebble software update will be sent to users, along with a first wave of new apps. Some that are already on the way include a Foursquare app for checking in with the touch of a button, a Yelp app showing local attractions, and a GoPro app made by Pebble that acts as a remote for video recording, and to adjust frame rate settings. There's also a future app in the works made by iControl that will interact as a remote with smart-home technology like locks and lights.</p><br /><p>The new Pebble software update also unleashes Bluetooth LE connectivity, which has been latent in Pebbles. Pebble connectivity has been made, previously, via a standard, higher-bandwidth older Bluetooth connection. Smart Bluetooth, which is in the , 5 and 5S and is becoming standardized through Android phones slowly but surely, is useful for a lot of fitness trackers and devices with background syncing, but according to Migicovsky the Pebble will keep using both forms of Bluetooth at once for the time being.</p><br /><div style='width: 610px' class='cnet-image-div image-LARGE2 float-none'><img alt="Pebble Watch (orange)" class="cnet-image" height="407" src="http://asset3.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim2/2013/11/05/35567496-Pebble-Watch-orange-2_610x407.jpg" width="610"/><br /><p class='image-caption'>No new Pebble, but third-party wristbands can snazz it up.</p><br /></div><br /><p><b>Pebble 2? It's all in the software for now</b><br/><br />Cast aside any dreams of a new Pebble, at least for now. In 2013, there is no new Pebble -- or, the new software is the new Pebble. That's not to say there aren't clear areas for improvement, a lack of a touch screen, for instance, or a microphone, or color display. Instead, Pebble is betting on new apps to reinvent the watch, and make the platform better for existing users. A dedicated fitness tracker and a few clever new apps could be a big difference-maker, especially since the watch is already more comfortable and water-resistant than other wearables. But finding them might still be a challenge: there won't be an official Pebble App Store or hub, although it's something that's being actively pursued. You'll still have to find third-party app portals or message boards to find what you're looking for.</p><br /><p>It's clear that the future commitment for Pebble, based on the briefing I had, is on developers, and true cross-platform Android/iOS flexibility, no matter what the app. But how that will translate to a user experience remains to be seen. Stay tuned for a Pebble review update once these new features and apps are available.</p><br /><p>The hackable future of the Pebble might be brighter than before, but hopefully it'll be a little more useful and understandable to the average person, too.
