Charlottesville ABC agents should be reminded of the Alicia Showalter Reynolds tragedy

I had no intention of writing about the Charlottesville ABC agents who apprehended a UVa student in the false belief she was underage with beer. Her "beer" turned out to be sparkling water but a series of events led to her arrest and she was thrown in the slammer overnight. ABC agents thought their lives were in danger, and the young lady thought her life was in danger, and it ended up in a big mess.<br /><br />The actual incident occurred in April but came to light at the end of June when the <i>Daily Progress</i> reported on it after charges were finally dropped against Elizabeth Daly. Reporter K. Burnell Evans wrote "<a href="http://www.dailyprogress.com/news/bottled-water-purchase-leads-to-night-in-jail-for-uva/article_b5ab5f62-df9b-11e2-81c4-0019bb30f31a.html">Bottled-water purchase leads to night in jail for UVa student</a>:"<br /><blockquote>When a half-dozen men and a woman in street clothes closed in on University of Virginia student Elizabeth Daly, 20, she and two roommates panicked.<br /><br />That led to Daly spending a night and an afternoon in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. Her initial offense? Walking to her car with bottled water, cookie dough and ice cream just purchased from the Harris Teeter in the Barracks Road Shopping Center for a sorority benefit fundraiser.<br /><br />A group of state Alcoholic Beverage Control agents clad in plainclothes approached her, suspecting the blue carton of LaCroix sparkling water to be a 12-pack of beer. Police say one of the agents jumped on the hood of her car. She says one drew a gun. Unsure of who they were, Daly tried to flee the darkened parking lot.<br /><br />"They were showing unidentifiable badges after they approached us, but we became frightened, as they were not in anything close to a uniform," she recalled Thursday in a written account of the April 11 incident.</blockquote>And then there's this:<br /><blockquote>Prosecutors say she apologized profusely when she realized who the agents were. But that wasn't good enough for ABC agents, who charged her with three felonies.</blockquote>She was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of eluding police. <br /><br />What stands out to me is that <i>half a dozen</i> agents closed in, at night, on several young college students. The agents were in street clothes, unrecognizable as law enforcement, and apparently their quick flashing of badges was not enough to be seen or confirmed. It was dark, the agents banged on the windows and jumped on the hood of the vehicle. The girls fled, terrified they were being assaulted. Stopped a short distance away by another police officer, Ms. Daly was told the car-jumping, window-banging shadows in the night were actually agents, and she apologized profusely. They slapped the cuffs on her and hauled her to jail.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.readthehook.com/109831/terror-harris-teeter-gun-wielding-abc-agents-arrest-underage-water-buyer">Local</a> and national news outlets have picked up on it. <br /><br />As I read yet another account of the incident, I thought about Alicia Showalter Reynolds who was abducted and murdered 17 years ago on Rt. 29 north of Charlottesville, reportedly by a man who had a flashing police light on the roof of his truck and pulled her over. She went missing for two months until her body was found in Culpeper. The murder was never solved ... the case is still open.<br /><br />That incident was an alarming event for women in the area. Still unsolved, Virginia State Police issued a statement in March of this year: <br /><blockquote>CULPEPER – Apprehending the person responsible for the disappearance and death of Alicia Showalter Reynolds remains a priority for the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper Field Office.<br /><br />March 2, 2013, marks 17 years since Ms. Reynolds was abducted in Culpeper County on Route 29 while traveling from Baltimore, Md., to Charlottesville. Since then the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper Field Office has received more than 10,040 tips relating to the ongoing case, with 27 of them coming in within the past 12 months. State police continue to ask the public to come forward with any information related to the investigation.<br /><br />According to witnesses who observed Ms. Reynolds’ vehicle parked on the southbound shoulder of Route 29 on March 2, 1996, a white male, approximately 35-45 years old with a medium build and light to medium brown hair was stopped out with her vehicle. The man, described as between 5’10’ to 6’0 tall, was driving a dark colored pickup truck, possibly a green Nissan. Ms. Reynolds’ remains were found two months later on May 7, 1996, in the Lignum area of Culpeper County.<br /><br />As news spread about Ms. Reynolds’ abduction, several other female subjects came forward advising that a white male had either stopped them or attempted to stop them while they were traveling along Route 29 in Culpeper County.<br /><br />Despite the passage of time, state police continue to pursue this case. “Within the past year, the investigation into Ms. Reynolds’ murder was the focus of review by State Police violent crimes investigators from around the state,” said Capt. Gary T. Settle, commander of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Culpeper Field Office. “These investigators poured over the entire case file, leads, witness statements, interviews, suspect profiles, evidence, etc., to strategize and pursue any new evidential or technological avenues that could benefit and, ultimately, advance the progress of this ongoing investigation.”<br /><br />Anyone with information pertaining to the abduction and murder of Alicia Showalter Reynolds is asked to contact the Virginia State Police Culpeper Division toll-free at 1-800-572-2260, or the Bureau of Criminal Investigation toll-free at 1-888-300-0156 or by e-mail at bci-culpeper@vsp.virginia.gov.</blockquote>At the time, police advised women who were apprehended by a "police" vehicle to find a safe area before stopping, and were assured real officers would know they were not fleeing. <br /><br />With that in mind, perhaps ABC officers, especially those working in college towns, should be reminded of the <a href="http://unsolvedmysteries.wikia.com/wiki/Alicia_Showalter_Reynolds">Alicia Reynolds tragedy</a>.<br /><br /><b>UPDATE: </b>A number of newspaper editorials have questioned the validity and wisdom of ABC agents' actions during this incident including the Richmond Times-Dispatch, posting the editorial, <a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/opinion/our-opinion/today-s-top-opinion-drunk-on-power/article_6d59ca44-59bb-5bb2-88b6-78f17b3ffade.html">Drunk on power?</a>

She counted about 50 women she had known who had drug-related deaths. But opioid abuse, which exploded in the 1990s and 2000s and included drugs like OxyContin, Vicodin and Percocet, has been worst among whites, often in rural places. The C.D.C. analysis found that the overdose death rate for blacks in 2010, the most recent year for which there was final data, was less than half the rate for whites. The range indicates that at least some portion of the drugs may have been prescribed appropriately for pain, Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said in an interview. Frieden, the C.D.C. director, said the problem had gone virtually unrecognized. The study offered several theories for the increase. NC Moral Monday protesters take on unemployment cuts; more than 80 arrested

Police arrested more than 80 people during the ninth Moral Monday protest in Raleigh, N.C,. last night. They were protesting a new state law that<a href="http://www.wral.com/nc-s-long-term-jobless-lose-unemployment-checks/12612312/"> cuts off federal unemployment benefits for 70,000 state residents</a>. Since late April, law enforcement has detained about <a href="http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=news/local&id=9157935">675 demonstrators</a> for protesting the policies of Gov. Pat McCrory and the Republican-majority Legislature.<br /><br />North Carolina yesterday became the first state to opt out from collecting extended unemployment benefits. Beyond those immediately affected, another 100,000 state residents could lose their benefits in the coming months. The new law also hacks the maximum weekly benefit a laid-off worker can receive from $535 to $350.<br /><br />For some in the crowd of 1,200 gathered near the Statehouse, the loss is far more than a statistic. Wayne Bostic <a href="http://www.wral.com/9th-moral-monday-focuses-on-unemployment-cuts/12617625/?print_friendly">said</a> he is unsure whether he will be able to remain in his home:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">It means my check, which is the mortgage check, is not going to be there. How is a cut in anybody's money going to help a person?</blockquote>Chapel Hill resident Kristin Frescoln is the former manager of the state's drug treatment courts who lost her job in 2011 when the Legislature largely defunded the program. She <a href="http://fayobserver.com/articles/2013/07/02/1267195">said</a> the protests build awareness of what is going on in North Carolina:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">We have to bring attention to what is happening here. It's our obligation in a democracy to speak out.</blockquote>The <a href="http://www.naacpnc.org/">state chapter of the NAACP</a>, with the backing of unions, the North Carolina Democratic Party and others, have continued to put pressure on Gov. McCrory and the Legislature. They are dancing to the tune of the state's multimillionaire budget director, <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/02/heres-billionaire-trying-to-destroy.html">Art Pope</a>. Pope is a friend of the Koch brothers and a disciple of <a href="http://www.alecexposed.org/">ALEC</a>, the escort service for corporations and state lawmakers. Pope helped pay for the 2012 candidacies of the governor and many state GOP lawmakers now in office.<br /><br />Besides unemployment benefit cuts, the Legislature opted out of participating in the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion, which would have covered an additional 500,000 North Carolinians. Blew it

"What happens if I tell you to do something?"<br /><br />"I'll do it."<br /><br />Seemed simple enough.  Not as simple as I probably think, but the general principle of being asked to do something and following through shouldn't be too difficult to the one asking for it.  Well, I blew it.<br /><br />I didn't see it for what it was until this morning.  I guess, like probably every one of you, it didn't go as I pictured it would... you know, my way lol.  I was thinking more like "put away these clothes that you've had sitting around for a week" or maybe something like "help the kids sort out their toys so we can walk through the living room again." Or more importantly, "Do your work tasks today so we don't owe late fees."<br /><br />My heart is always in everything I do, even if I despise doing it.  Everything is done for a reason and I like to think there's always good to come from it in the end.  Heart and good intentions don't get the job done.  I've always had issues with organization and procrastination.  I have ADD that's no longer medicated.  Not that it's an excuse, not at all, it just poses an additional challenge for staying on task when I <i>finally </i>get doing whatever it was.  Deadlines and disasters are what  motivate me.  Which comes back around to why I think DD is going to help me as opposed to some other way of improving my relationship with my husband.  <br /><br />One of our businesses is closed this week.  Kids are out of school this week and back to school Monday, darned year-round schools.  I do have stuff to do, I'm still sorta working, just the stuff I usually do at home.  This is the closest our family gets to having a stay-at-home mom.<br /><br />Read: I have a lot more time on my hands.<br /><br />They were subtle.  I didn't catch it.  Softly spoken suggestions.  I mean, I heard them, but filed them away as things on my to-do list... that will never be completed.  Suggestions that didn't quite register with the enormity of what he brought himself to do.  <br /><br />Not barked out, but worked into conversation.  You should probably go to the bank. Child should probably get writing thank-you cards, her party was a month ago.  Do you think you'd have time to call the utility company to find out how they want us to do something for a work project?  With that one he added, "You're so much better at that stuff than I am."<br /><br />We had a late dinner after kids went to bed.  "Did you get a lot of stuff done today?"  I admitted no.  "Well you got a house rented today."  Yes, I did, for more money than the last tenant!!  "And you went to the bank."  No... made some excuses.  "Well, you've got the cards done."  No... just bought them and didn't <strike>feel like it</strike> have time.  "Well you did call utility, right?"  Ummm, no... forgot and figured they'd be closed when I remembered.<br /><br />He sat there shaking his head in utter frustration.  I brushed it off, knowing I'd get these things done eventually.<br /><br />This morning, it hit me like a ton of bricks.  Those words seared into my brain.  "You're so much better at that stuff than I am."  Reading was far more important to me yesterday, more important than the work I knew I had to do.  Apparently more important than what I was asked to do.  When I had an opportunity to encourage him, I blew it.<br /><br />With an obscene amount of guilt weighing on me, I had a lengthy conversation with the utility company while they scrambled for the answer.  My daughter has been sitting here dutifully writing thank you cards.  Shes making far too much work for herself but they're really stinkin cute.  She's still writing and I'm here typing.  Then we'll be off to the post office so she can pick out her own stamps... then to the bank.

Teamster funeral directors strike in Chicago

The relentless greed of <a href="http://www.teamsterslocal727.org/">Houston-based funeral giant SC</a>I has forced Teamster funeral directors and drivers to strike today. The funeral directors, members of Local 727, set up strike lines this morning outside of area funeral homes.<br /><br />SCI, despite a soaring stock price and healthy profit, is trying to take away their employees' pensions, raise health care costs and freeze wages for new hires. Leaving a school must have heartache in it. Every teacher I know who is a great teacher loves their kids and many colleagues at any school - no matter how tough.</p> <p>My Mom still shows me the platter presented to her when she left her first school. My sister still misses some of her colleagues and talks fondly of her first class at Gwinett County schools near Atlanta. It is part of who we are. Our treasures are not dollars in the bank, but faces that come to mind and the stories that enrich our lives full of meaning. Good teachers are rich. We aren't biding our time, we are building it. When we retire, great teachers have castles of legacy built upon the stories and richness of lives forever changed.</p> <p>Today, I have lunch with Casey - she's in college and was one of the two students that Thomas Friedman mentioned when he wrote about the Flat Classroom projects in his version 3 of the World is Flat. She is doing great in college and I'm excited to hear her stories. She couldn't stay in her old abode (high school) but had to move on to the upper road (college) and then will move beyond. Like my son who just finished his first college test yesterday in Psychology. The upper road calls.</p> <p>I'm writing this because many of us educators have transition. We may have to give up coaching a sport and move to another. We may have to give up a club to do another. We may no longer be teaching a subject we love and have to move to one we're not so crazy about. If we're parents, we might even have to let our own child move to their upper road without the baggage of an overly sad parent hanging over their heads. (sniff)</p> <p>I never want to be the kind of teacher (or parent) who lives in the old, dank abodes of time past - wishing for how it used to be. It used to be hard and it will continue to be hard because that is the profession we have. The profession we have is tough. I pray daily to be like Moses' burning bush to be on fire without burning out (something only God can do, honestly, because teaching is sooooo hard.)</p> <p>So, teacher, as you face transition - let's move to the upper road with purpose. Let's remember the past abode with joy, but as our bodies move forward, let our hearts and souls move forward too. <strong>Let's be fully present in the present</strong> - learning from the past but not living there.
