Sure enough, that's what happened today as reports of a bear began surfacing around the middle of the day. The photo above was taken on North Augusta Street across from the Mary Baldwin College campus where the bear was seen on campus making its way toward Statler Boulevard.<br /><br />I was talking with wildlife biologist and longtime friend Al Bourgeois from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries as we sat at dinner last weekend at a wedding in western Augusta County. He is one of the resident bear experts who has dealt with bears in this area for years. He said it has been a very active season as the hungry critters are roaming looking for food and, since there is very little natural food just yet, some are making their way to populated areas sniffing out garbage, bird feeders, and other edible goodies.<br /><br />Bears are not unusual in this part of Virginia, and each year there are incidents with some years busier than others. Day 4 #Belviq - my meals today and I NEED EASY recipes!

Pope-backed group attempts to make joke out of N.C. protesters

The Moral Monday protests in North Carolina have already resulted in nearly 500 arrests, not including tonight's Statehouse rally. That's scores of real North Carolinians standing up against the gutting of education, health care and the environment and for fairness in the tax code. But for some, it's all just a game.<br /><br />The Civitas Institute, a state-focused stink-tank largely funded by state budget director Art Pope, decided it would be "fun" to create a <a href="http://www.nccivitas.org/moralmonday/">"Pick the Protester" game</a>. It lets the user choose among three mug shots of those arrested to answer a question. For instance, it asks, "who's from Raleigh" or "who is 73 years old" or "who is unemployed"? It attempts to make a joke out of those who are standing up for the middle class.<br /><br />If that's not your kind of humor, you also won't like the website's more insidious roster of arrestees which links their photo to information about each person's name, age, residence, race, occupation, employer and interest group memberships. It reeks of the some of the actions taken to tamp down on civil rights protests in the 1950s and 1960s.<br /><br />As stated by the <a href="http://www.southernstudies.org/2013/06/art-pope-funded-group-launches-database-targeting-.html">Institute of Southern Studies</a>: <br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Civitas' database brings to mind another troubling episode of mid-20th century U.S. history: how in some Southern cities at that time the white-supremacist White Citizens' Councils (WCC) would publish in local newspapers the names of NAACP supporters and those who signed anti-segregation petitions in order to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Citizens%27_Council#Economic_retaliation_and_violence">encourage retaliation</a> against them. The WCCs, like Civitas, also had <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Citizens%27_Council#Political_influence">close ties</a> to powerful government officials.</blockquote>Thankfully, the plan doesn't seem to be working. Organizers are expecting a huge turnout for tonight's rally, which is focused on labor and economic issues. Union members are expected to be out in force. We stand tall with those who are sticking up for working men and women.<br /><br /><br />

<div style='font-style:italic;' class='uawbyline'>By Howe Russ</div><br /><br /> <div class='uawarticle'>You have probably heard people in gyms around the world asking the question is diet more important than exercise so today we are going to help you get to the bottom of this popular issue.<br /> <br /> Depending upon who you ask and their own fitness background, it's highly likely that you will get a different answer every time you pose this question to somebody. Ultimately, many of us base our decision purely off our own experiences and opinions. For instance, everybody has a friend who is always trying to latest celebrity diet plan. That friend will probably put huge faith in their eating plan being the most important factor because it's what they know.<br /> <br /> Likewise, however, those with a long background of exercise under their belts will be much more likely to advise you that you need to concentrate more on the fitness aspect of your lifestyle. Many people even go as far as to advise that if you do this effectively, you can pretty much eat whatever you want. So who is correct?<br /> <br /> Neither approach is correct if you are trying to achieve your best possible physique.<br /> <br /> Rather than see the potential benefits of both areas, people tend to place a priority on one over the other. This ends up leading them down a path towards failure, of course. For instance, if you ever hear somebody telling another person that your diet makes up 80 percent of your results and exercise only accounts for the other twenty percent, try to avoid falling into the same mentality.<br /> <br /> At the end of the day you should be applying both factors if you want to see results and maintain them. If you are trying to work out how to lose weight and you only apply the rules of one principle you will tend to fall into one of two categories, both of which can be seen at most gyms and workplaces around the world:<br /> <br /> * The person who consistently follows new eating plans, often picked up from celebrity gossip magazines or New Year weight loss plans. They don't combine this with regular exercise, though, and even though they are able to drop some pounds through a healthier lifestyle they don't actually look any healthier at all. They haven't worked out, so their body is no more toned than it was three months ago.<br /> <br /> * The person who seems to live in the local gym. They are there every time you walk through the door and they are still there when you leave, yet they certainly don't work there! These people are more than happy to do endless hours of cardio or throw the weights around, but the most they look into their eating habits seems to be a protein supplement when they're finished exercising. These folks are usually equipped with fairly well defined muscles in their shoulders, arms and chest but pair it with a pot belly or undefined, flabby abdominal muscles.<br /> <br /> The fact of the matter is that common sense must prevail if you are to get anywhere. If you are interested in dropping unwanted pounds and actually maintaining the results you should be avoiding falling into one of the two popular stereotypes shown above.<br /> <br /> It's almost like trying to decide whether fuel is more important than your car. At the end of the day, neither is very useful on their own. The correct approach is to apply both factors to your lifestyle and realize that neither is more important than the other. They are not in competition for your attention, they are two things which are designed to work together. If you are able to apply the basic principles of a good nutritional plan and a healthy workout program you will see positive change and the results will be sustainable, too. <br /> <br /> In a recent interview, former bodybuilding champion Jay Cutler was asked the question is diet more important than exercise and his answer perfectly summed up the correct approach. Internships are becoming more important in getting a first job – and they're increasingly unpaid. According to the New York Times, about <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/12/business/judge-rules-for-interns-who-sued-fox-searchlight.html">half of the million-plus internships taken by college undergraduates every year are unpaid</a>. More than 50 percent of current college graduates are estimated to have had at least two college internships. No data exists on how many recent college graduates take internships after college.<br /><div><br /></div><div>What sort of impact is this having? Noah Baron, from the New American Politics PAC,<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/noah-baron/your-unpaid-internship-at_b_488450.html"> argues</a>: </div><div><blockquote class="tr_bq">A neglected issue … which affects nearly every college student in the United States today is that of unpaid internships…. The problem of unpaid internships affects all but the most wealthy.</blockquote>Here are five ways unpaid internships are destroying the U.S.:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><b>1. Anecdotally, many students report working as many as 40 to 50 hours per week — and some of those are freshman. Their advisors often do not know they are working beyond their federal work study hours, and they are having trouble meeting assignment deadlines in class because they are working so much. When prioritizing their activities, work for pay comes first, internship or career enhancement comes second, and school work comes last. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">Learning to balance academic, work and life responsibilities quickly translates into juggling paid work, unpaid work, and work that you pay to do. Small wonder only <a href="http://collegecompletion.chronicle.com/college-stats/">half of those lazy college students actually survive until graduation</a>. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">The unpaid internship isn't even that valuable for students who do survive and graduate. The National Association of Colleges and Employers 2013 Student Survey found that “<a href="http://news.yahoo.com/employment-experts-predict-wave-lawsuits-unpaid-interns-192615927.html">while paid internships increased the likelihood of receiving a permanent job offer, unpaid interns fared only slightly better than students who did no internship at all</a>." </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><b>2. Unpaid Internships Have No Labor Rights: </b>Because they receive no income from the company, unpaid interns are not employees, and are therefore not protected <a href="http://www.epi.org/publication/pm160/">from sexual harassment</a>, <a href="http://www.sahrma.org/images/studentchapter_legal_issues.pdf">workers compensation</a>, or any other sort of employment regulations. Forced to work 10 hour days, or don’t get a lunch break? Nobody cares. Without payment, interns are technically volunteers and have no labor rights. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">However, interns are allowed to sue for negligence. <a href="http://www.hartfordbusiness.com/article/20130610/PRINTEDITION/306079969/that-summer-intern-may-be-legal-liability">And back pay</a>. And anything else that happens to them. That is, if they can afford it. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><b>3. Using Unpaid Interns Causes Massive Legal Liability Headaches For Businesses: </b>The <a href="http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs71.htm">Department of Labor internship guidelines</a> are very strict at for-profit institutions; you can’t replace workers or benefit from intern work, and you have to supervise interns with “training which would be given in an educational environment”. <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/06/the-court-ruling-that-could-end-unpaid-internships-for-good/276795/">The Atlantic observes</a> that: </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><ul><li>A summer full of filing, data entry, and occasional lunch run would appear to be utterly insufficient to meet this standard. Even internships used as college classes <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/03/business/03intern.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2">are suspect</a>:</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><ul><li>California and some other states require that interns receive college credit as a condition of being unpaid. But federal regulators say that receiving college credit does not necessarily free companies from paying interns, especially when the internship involves little training and mainly benefits the employer. </li></ul></blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><b>4. Unpaid Interns Drive off Good Talen: </b><a href="http://www.propublica.org/article/how-industry-loses-when-interns-go-unpaid">Research interns at ProPublica</a> argue that unpaid internships replace skilled workers:</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">...the current arrangement between employers and unpaid interns is neither fair nor sustainable. The set-up — where organizations hire workers under pet names such as “apprentice” or “volunteer” and pass off full-time employees’ responsibilities without compensation — undermines a large pool of people in this country, typically young folks. In this sense, employers who actively recruit and rotate new talent without paying for it are directly hurting a critical sector of their own industries. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">Without a paying job, intelligent recruits are likely to abandon the industry for something more sustainable: <a href="http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/McDonald-s-Salaries-E432.htm">flipping burgers at McDonald’s</a>.</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><b>5. Unpaid internships stifle job creation: T</b>he unpaid college internship has spawned the creation of the barely-paid post-college internship and a new class of perma-interns that roams around for new internship positions every few months in the hope that someday, someone will hire them.<br /> <br />Back in February, the Washingtonian <a href="http://www.washingtonian.com/articles/people/the-age-of-the-permanent-intern/">commented on their plight</a>:<br /><ul><li>You can find young people languishing at film studios in Los Angeles and magazine empires in New York City. Similarly, Washington’s job pyramid … doesn’t start at entry level; it starts at internship. Our area is now home to one of the largest intern-industrial complexes in the country, one that extends well past the bustling summer months.</li></ul></blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">These low-paid workers don't have much to spend, and so they aren't supporting the businesses in their community (or any business, for that matter. They aren't buying <a href="http://www.mainstreet.com/article/real-estate/gen-yers-delay-first-time-home-buying">homes</a>, and they aren't buying refrigerators or carpeting or furniture. </blockquote>Turns out, denying a significant section of the population good jobs with good wages hurts us all.</div>

But I am surprised at the rapid <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/21/paula-deen-fired-food-network-cancels-show-after-racism-scandal_n_3480517.html" target="_blank">cancellation of her show by the Food Network</a> because Deen admitted she used racial slurs in the past, even though she admitted that they were wrong and she no longer uses them.<br /><br />Given that Ergun Caner is now <a href="http://www.abpnews.com/ministry/people/item/8612-caner-sues-to-purge-video-from-web" target="_blank">aggressively trying to wipe the Internet of damaging video</a> of his decade of deceit, let's do a compare and contrast of Paula Deen to Ergun Caner:<br /><br />Paula Deen, TV personality  -  verus Ergun Caner, Baptist personality.<br /><br />Who would you hold to a higher standard? A TV chef, or a Baptist Preacher <br /><br />You would think we would hold Caner to a higher standard, especially since he is so popular as a youth retreat preacher.<br /><br />But sadly, our culture apparently holds Paula Deen to a much higher standard than we do a Baptist preacher who spends his summers preaching to young skulls of mush at youth retreats.<br /><br />Below are examples of Ergun Caner's racial and ethnic stereotypes he perpetuated from the pulpit over the last decade for which he was never held accountable for, or made to apologize for. Why did he get a pass on these? Probably because he spoke them AFTER he was able to convince audiences after 9/11 that he himself was some sort of minority - an immigrant "Turk", and "olive skinned" person - and thus he made these comments in that false context of being a minority himself.<br /><br />I will say this: there WAS one person I know of who has called on Caner to apologize for his remarks, and that was <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2010/04/mckissic-draws-attention-to-racial.html" target="_blank">Pastor Dwight McKissic.</a>  Dwight correctly <a href="http://dwightmckissic.wordpress.com/2010/04/07/attitudes-toward-race-in-sbc-life/" target="_blank">called Caner to apologize to FBC Jax</a> after he made remarks back in 2009 perpetuating stereotypes of blacks and Hispanics.<br /><br />Examples of Caner's ethnic slurs, from the pulpit, including the ones at Jacksonville:<br /><br />1. Female Self-Esteem, making fun of "ugly" girls - <a href="http://wbcmedia.sermon.tv/8567907" target="_blank">Gainesville, Westside Baptist Church</a> - June 2013<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>"A single preacher in churches is like blood to sharks, because in those country churches they would drag out mutant granddaughters out of closets for me...this ain't much to look at [himself] but I didn't want to marry a female of this [point to his face]....finally they would say 'I know the perfect one for him' and then she'd pull her out [of the closet], 'come here Bullah' [then he makes barking noises]."</b></span></i></div><br />So that is another aspect of the Ergun Caner legend and mystique...he can get away with the above  nonsense, even as recently as last week at <a href="http://www.westsidebaptist.org/" target="_blank">Westside Baptist Church in Gainesville</a>.<br /><br />And Paula Deen, you obviously picked the wrong field - you could have freely used racial and ethnic and even sexist stereotypes if you had become a Baptist preacher/seminary professor/youth camp leader.<br /><br />Oh, but wait, you're a woman, so that might exclude you in the SBC ranks....
