I also enjoy hearing about how different technologies are used in school.  So today was a double bonus day for me! This teacher was the Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) of the year in 2009, Richard Colosi, a first grade teacher in Canandaigua, is trying to set an example about the benefits of using the newest technology in the classroom. He's hoping to share his success stories with other teachers from across the country. I used to be a fan of Restoration Hardware. For a long time, I had a hookup to 'Resto' and enjoyed a healthy discount. And believe me, I used it. You know, the fabric they use on Project Runway as their template...before they sew on the real fabric.<br /><br />I think this came from a dare at Restoration Hardware headquarters. At happy hour one night and they started playing the 'would people buy it' game. Crazy Herb from accounting said, "just take our existing chairs and pull the fabric off." Oh Herb!<br /><br />Save yourself $1600. If you are interested in a chair like this, I'll be happy to pull something off the side of the road for you and just rip the upholstery off.<br /><br />What do you think? Are you picking up what Restoration is throwing down? And don't let my subtle opinion influence you in any way. :)

Little did I know that I was making film in higher quality than the original first <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Star-Wars-Episode-IV-A-New-Hope/60010932" rel="netflix" target="_blank" title="Star Wars">Star Wars</a> film released on May 25, 1977 that this day was established to commemorate. I wanted to share this post anyway.</i><br /><br /><h3> My love affair with computers started when I was 7 in the 70's.</h3>In the 1970's when Star Wars was being released, my Dad had me using his <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS-80" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="TRS-80">Radio Shack TRS-80</a> and I fell in love with computers. By the time the computer revolution began and people started using the word "nerd" I was already one. In my tiny town of 4,000 or so, at first it bothered me, but then, I realized it was my future. Little did I know how true this would be.<br /><br />I went to Georgia Tech in the 80's because of their role in computing and fully embraced being called a "nerd" which soon turned into the word "geek." First I was in the mobile phone business in the early 90's and my geekiness meant money in my slim wallet. But now, I'm moved into one of the greatest professions on the planet: teaching. My geekiness can literally improve lives.<br /><br />Through teaching <a href="http://westwood.wikispaces.com/" target="_blank">wikis</a>, I met <a href="http://123elearning.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Julie Lindsay</a> in Bangladesh through the K12 Online conference in 2006, and we became the best of friends co-creating the <a href="http://www.flatclassroomproject.org/" target="_blank">Flat Classroom projects</a>. Before we even met, we had won the ISTE Online Learning Award for the best collaborative educational project in the world. Geekiness had again improved my life and the children I teach.<br /><br /><h3> Today</h3>Now, Julie and I both teach full time but have created networks of teachers who help students connect with each other from Kindergarten, college, and beyond - thousands of kids each semester turn to each other to learn about culture. <b>Students are the greatest textbook every written for each other. </b>Geekiness has opened the book for powerful online learning experiences between students on whom we will depend upon for the future success of our world. Their ability to work together online with integrity, discipline, and respect is a hinge upon which our future will swing.<br /><br />We've coordinated and held conferences in Doha, Qatar, Mumbai, India and Beijing China and in the next 12 months will host a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://vflatclassroom.ideationnation.net/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Flat Classroom conference">Flat Classroom conference</a> in Germany and Japan. Geekiness has helped us knit together a functioning organization with people from every continent.<br /><br />Now in my own life, I get to be a full time teacher and have published my first book  <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0132610353/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=httpwwwbrighc-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0132610353" id="static_txt_preview" style="background-color: white; color: #996633; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; text-align: center;" target="_blank">Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds</a> . Because I'm a geek, I've figured out how to schedule my social media interactions on the weekend or wee hours of the morning so that during the day I can focus on my students.<br /><br />I spent time shunning the term "geek" but now I realize that my life and the life of others is being improved as we speak because I'm a geek.<br /><br />If geek means I can help students no longer stereotype each other - then bring it on.<br />If being a geek means that students can graduate from high school able to collaborate -- then let it be.<br />If being a geek also means that my family can pay off our debts and I can pay for college for my children - then it is a great blessing.<br /><br />I celebrate being a geek because being one has improved the world, the world of my students and children, and my own life.<br /><br />In today's world being a geek is an advantage and should no longer be a byword or insult. <br /><br /><h2> Geek Poetry</h2><br />I'm a geek and I don't care<br />Geeking has gotten me everywhere<br />We can't be afraid of tomorrow's skills<br />geeking today keeps you current & pays bills<br /><br />Don't let insults from those who don't understand<br />keep you from fulfilling your own life's plan.<br />I'm a geek and I do care<br />about you, your classroom, and kids everywhere.<br /><br />Geek used to be a byword for a very smart nerd<br />and I heard those taunts and heard those slurs<br />but now I know that my future echoed in my ears<br />and the blessings today are worth the past's tears.<br /><br />I'm a geek but my friends are too<br />to be successful you'll need a little geek in you<br />so, let's move past the word and up ahead<br />where being smart is OK and "geek" gives you cred.<br /><div class="zemanta-related" style="margin-top: 20px; Being a Plus Size Bride - Part 2

I have to be really honest here. <br /><br />When it comes to weight loss, I am not a person who is motivated by pressure, at all.  I've always admired those people who can have total self control when it comes to reaching a goal by a certain period of time - whether that be for a class reunion, wedding, birthday, whatever.  They can decline offers of alcoholic beverages, desserts, appetizers - you name it - all without blinking an eye it seems.  "I'm sorry, I can't have that - I'm watching my weight for 'X'."  My problem? I cannot say that two letter word: <b>no</b>.  <br /><br />I can remember being in various friends' weddings over the years and vowing to lose x-number of pounds by their wedding and I failed...every. single. time.  Of course, I've done this to myself many times over the years, not just with weddings.  Surely someone can relate to this madness!<br /><br />Now, I'm not here to make excuses for my failures, I'm just trying/learning to recognize what works/doesn't work for me on this weight loss journey.  Case in point - my own wedding!  You would think that your own wedding would be enough motivation to "once and for all" remove the weight.  Sadly, no.  <i>Very</i> sadly, no.<br /><br />I tend to have a self sabotage approach when things aren't going my way in terms of weight loss.  It is almost as though I don't want to let myself be successful.  I will completely lose all eating inhibitions and just do what I want when the pressure is on, instead of really cutting back and being extra picky about what I put into my mouth.  In some ways, it's an all or nothing mentality.  If I cannot do it right 100% of the time,why do it at all.   "It" here is staying within my DPT and WPA.  While pressure motivates others to focus on their goal and have total self control, pressure for me causes me to unwind and act like I don't care.  Anyone else feel this way?  <br /><br />I remember before we got engaged, I told Joel that I'd hoped to be at or near goal before he popped the question so that I wouldn't have to deal with the pressure of losing weight during an engagement.  I knew this would happen!  Last year around this time I was getting into the zone with weight loss, and feeling good about taking a "slow and steady" approach to it.  Slow and steady = no pressure.  I was starting to realize that I didn't need to compare my journey to everyone else's - i.e. running races, lifting weights, doing whatever "everyone else" seemed to be doing.  No!   This is my journey and I was going to proceed how I wanted to, not how "everyone else" was doing it. Repeating a rendition of that mantra over and over really helped me stay focused.  <br /><br />Do I want to be 233 when I'm 30 years old? No.  But I have PLENTY of time to meet goal between now and then.  Honestly, while I'm not wishing the wedding away, I'll be happy to get back to a sense of normalcy where I won't feel so much pressure about fitting into a wedding dress as well as how I might <i>look </i>in my dress.  You could argue that once the "guilt pressure" goes away, I might lose all inhibitions and regain the 30 lbs I lost.  I don't believe this will happen though.  I'm proud that I've managed to maintain that 30 lbs loss, but I still have a long road ahead of me!  Right now my goal is simple and small - to lose another 30 lbs by March 4 of next year.  That means I only need to lose 3.3 lbs per month between now and then.  Definitely doable as long as I remain focused.<br /><br />I cannot wait to marry Joel this Saturday, plus size bride or not. <br /> I'm just looking forward to getting back to the "slow and steady" mentality.
