Nearly 7 in 10 Americans Are On Prescription Drugs - Newswise

Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug, and more than half take two, Mayo Clinic researchers say. Antibiotics, antidepressants and painkilling opioids are most commonly prescribed, their study found. Twenty percent of patients are on five or more prescription medications, according to the findings, published online in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings.<br /><br><br /><br>Researchers find the data valuable because it gives insight into prescribing practices. The statistics from the Rochester Epidemiology Project in Olmsted County, Minn. are comparable to those elsewhere in the United States, says study author Jennifer St. Sauver, Ph.D., a member of the Mayo Clinic Population Health Program in the Mayo Clinic Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery.<br /><br><br /><br>"Often when people talk about health conditions they're talking about chronic conditions such as heart disease or diabetes," Dr. St. Sauver says. Drugs to control high blood pressure came in fourth (11 percent) and vaccines were fifth (11 percent). Drugs were prescribed to both men and women across all age groups, except high blood pressure drugs, which were seldom used before age 30.<br /><br><br /><br>Overall, women and older adults receive more prescriptions. Vaccines, antibiotics and anti-asthma drugs are most commonly prescribed in people younger than 19. Antidepressants and opioids are most common among young and middle-aged adults. Cardiovascular drugs are most commonly prescribed in older adults. Women receive more prescriptions than men across several drug groups, especially antidepressants: Nearly 1 in 4 women ages 50-64 are on an antidepressant.<br /><br><br /><br>For several drug groups, use increases with advancing age.<br /><br><br /><br>"As you get older you tend to get more prescriptions, and women tend to get more prescriptions than men," Dr. St. Sauver says.<br /><br><br /><br>Prescription drug use has increased steadily in the U.S. for the past decade. The percentage of people who took at least one prescription drug in the past month increased from 44 percent in 1999-2000 to 48 percent in 2007-08. Still Pregnant!

The agents are hiding in the back because so many people are upset, they refuse to deal with it one person at a time. I'm not going to let this turn me into a cranky person. My joy doesn't depend upon whether they do their job. It can't or I'm an easy target of the natural happenings of life.</p> <h1>Does your attitude depend?</h1> <p>If you are in education and your attitude depends upon whether things are right in the front office - you'll be lucky to be happy half of the time. </p> <p>If your attitude depends upon whether your school has a sorry teacher or two - you'll never be happy. Every school I know has a few sorry teachers, sad to say.<br></p> <p>Your attitude cannot depend! It cannot.</p> <p>It cannot depend upon whether it rains or snows. You have no control over that!</p> <p>It cannot depend upon whether you feel good or not. You have no control over that either!</p> <p>It cannot depend upon whether there is no drama in your school. There always will be!</p> <p>If you have a great administrator - thank him or her every day. You are fortunate. Sadly, there are also those administrators, who, overwhelmed and for reasons of their own, hide like these shadowy gate attendants at this airport - afraid of angry people and letting the ire pile up. They hide behind closed doors and sometimes clock out early. This is life.</p> <p>If all of your colleagues are perfect teachers - enjoy it - it won't last. We all screw up sometimes. Some teachers do the bare minimum - copying worksheets and memos and leaving no imprint on the minds of children except a hatred of the topic. You can't help that. You can't.</p> <p>If no one in your school has answered the call of the siren song of secret sin - now gone public for everyone to know - be thankful! Because odds are there will often be these scandals.They happen because people are human and make mistakes. Your attitude cannot depend on whether one of these is going on either.</p> <h1>Are you really waiting for the nightly news to be good?</h1> <p>Waiting for everything to be perfect is like waiting for the nightly news to only report good things - it will never happen. Bad things happen. They do - this is earth - not heaven - bad things happen here.</p> <p>I'm saying this because so often, as a teacher, it is so easy to get upset about things we cannot control. We cannot control others at all. Not one brand new spanking bit.</p> <p><strong>Quite frankly - if your attitude depends on others - it is like the other kind of Depends. It will always smell because foul stuff is always around you</strong>. It is the function of the world that stinky stuff happens. It always will. Your attitude cannot depend upon your environment being squeaky clean. If it does, you'll be disappointed and miserable the rest of your life - whether you teach or not.</p> <p>As teachers, <strong>we must get rid of our depends</strong>. </p> <p>Throw them in the trash and never put them on again! We have to. It is essential that we cultivate an ability to insulate our students. When we close the door, it should be like a cocoon - a safe, secure place.<br></p> <h1>Take off your Depends!</h1> <p>To do this, we must get rid of our depends. Take off your depends RIGHT NOW!</p> <h1>The Most important "A" in your Classroom</h1> <p>The most important A in your classroom is your Attitude.</p> <p>Look at that word attitude. -- look at it again -- </p> <p>Att - <font size="7">I</font> - tude.</p> <p> Do you see that?</p> <p>I am at the center of my attitude. It is me. I'm at the center of my own attitude.</p> <p>There are times we have to own our attitude and decide to turn it around.</p> <h1>Attitudes spread</h1> <p>I've been in Ft. Wayne this week at the Knight Time Learning Conference in Kendallville, Indiana at East Noble High and they have an ash tree borer that is killing off these lovely ash trees. The only thing they can do is cut out all the trees around when one is blighted. Bad attitudes spread like ash borers - killing off attitudes -- beauty, and effectiveness.</p> <p>East Noble High School has the other kind of attitude - they are some of the most positive, kind, hard working people I've ever met. They are blessed.</p> <p>The difference between trees and us is that once a tree is blighted - it must be chopped down. You and I can actually do something about our attitudes. We can change.</p> <h1>How can I change my bad attitude?</h1> <p>Sometimes it is just going to a friend and saying:</p> <blockquote><p>"You know what, I've had a stinky attitude and I'm done. I'm not going to do this any more. I'm going to do what it takes to be part of the solution, not part of the problem."</p></blockquote> <p>Other times it is decided to stay away from the ash-boring negative talk of some of your colleagues until this most recent happening passes.</p> <p>Ultimately, there are often times - probably less than you think - when the corruption is so foul that you've made your home in a septic tank and you have to get out. </p> <h1>It happens EVERYWHERE</h1> <p>But every school - I repeat - EVERY SCHOOL goes through cycles. ALL OF THEM. </p> <p>All have scandals. All have staff members who make mistakes. All have parents with nasty divorces and the drama that ensues. All of them have things that make others angry and irate. </p> <p>All schools even have people who bide their time and have become people who hold a job instead of doing their job. These people, hold a job because no one else can do those responsibilities but they don't do their job - leaving others to secretly have a hard choice. Do you do the right thing for your students and do the job of another or do you let them fall and hurt more kids in the process?<em> (I admit, I usually do the latter, although it might not be right - I love the kids and they are why I teach. It is infuriating when sorry people get "promoted" to get them away from students but it happens. Move on. It isn't fair but life isn't either. Do your job anyway and love those students. It is the right thing to do.)</em></p> <p>If your attitude depends - why not get rid of your depends?</p> <p>If you're going to be one of those teachers who makes it 30 or 40 years then you're going to have throw your depends away.</p> <p>Like Dorothy saying "there's no place like home" and clicking her ruby slippers, let's repeat the words that will remind us how to throw away our depends.</p> <ul> <li>My attitude will not depend upon whether other teachers do their job.</li> <li>My attitude will not depend upon whether administrators are doing their job.</li> <li>My attitude will not depend upon whether everything is fair around me - life isn't fair. It never will be.</li> <li>I will influence MY attitude. My attitude will be positive and encouraging. I will make no excuses and will not perpetuate negativity.</li> <li>In my classroom, my attitude determines my student's altitude and ultimately their aptitude for my subject. My attitude is important and I will protect it.</li> <li>If my attitude stinks, my students are not old enough to get rid of their depends. Because I love my students, I will do whatever it takes to keep and maintain my positive attitude even if it means distancing myself from colleagues.</li> <li>Nothing good comes out of a bad attitude - they stink.</li> <li>I will do what it takes to be a noble teacher - ANYWAY. </li> <li>I will surround myself with positive people, encouraging books, and avoid whiners.</li> <li>Even when truly tough things are happening, I will do my best to close my door and provide the most positive environment I can for my students. XBox 360: Recent Titles

<p align="justify"><font size="3">The last several days I haven't really been interested in any game installed on our computers. I think I'm burned out or flat out bored with the endless grind that mmo's have determined is the best, aka only, way to keep the attention of their players. I've fired up the Xbox the last couple of days and have been enjoying the heck out of myself, but of course the completion addict in me is also compelled to clean-up some achievements I have uncompleted on several games. I've also tried and fell in love, a couple of games we've had for ages but I never tried.</font><br><br></p> <div class="separator"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em" href="http://soyunjugon.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/090204_red_dead_redemption_02.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="511" src="http://soyunjugon.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/090204_red_dead_redemption_02.jpg" width="900"></a></div> <p align="justify"><br><font size="3"><a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Red-Dead-Redemption/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8025454082b" target="_blank">Red Dead Redemption</a> by Rockstar Games is one of those titles. Hubby bought it when the tiled hit the On Demand menu on our 360. I always thought the game was beautiful but shooters and I generally, in the past, have had a disgruntled history. I have loved the story in games like Bioshock and Halo but the shooter aspect was always meh. However, apparently, in the last couple of years I think I've gotten over my meh block to shooter games or I'm just suddenly in the mood to play the stories and the shooter aspect doesn't bother me right now.<br><br>The story in Red Dead is the weakest of all the games I'm flitting thought right now but the environment is stunning. Sunrises and sunsets are nearly as brilliant as they are through our family room window. The weather in the game is really caught stunning. The thunderstorm mechanic in game is enough to make me find a safe spot in game and listen to the weather. The puddles, the dark atmosphere, and light effects are just fabulous.</font> <br><br></p> <div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em" href="http://www.geekbox.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/assassins_creed_3-HD.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="510" src="http://www.geekbox.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/assassins_creed_3-HD.jpg" width="900"></a></div> <p align="justify"><br><font size="3"><a href="http://assassinscreed.ubi.com/en-gb/home/index.aspx" target="_blank">Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag</a> definitely caught my attention at this Year's E3 last week and thus I decided to put <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Assassins-Creed-III/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802555308ae" target="_blank">Assassin's Creed III</a> at the top of the Gamefly queue. Game arrived and as soon as it fired up, it had my full and complete attention. The story grabbed me and held my attention. I played through the first mission in London and have made it through the first tavern mission in Boston. However, I have decided to go back and catch up on the games I missed in the past.<br><br>Hubby played through <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Assassins-Creed/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802555307d4?cid=search" target="_blank">Assassin's Creed</a> when it was released and I watched while stitching next to him (not uncommon here). I tried the original game but it didn't capture my imagination. When Assassin's Creed II was released hubby tried that game too. I thought it was beautiful and the characters much more engaging, however the dialogue drove hubby batty and neither of us finished the game. So when <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Assassins-Creed-Brotherhood/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8025553085d?cid=search" target="_blank">Brotherhood</a> and <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Assassins-Creed-Revelations/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80255530879?cid=search" target="_blank">Revelations</a> were released we basically ignored the games and played other things.<br><br>Well, no longer will the Assassin's Creed franchise be ignored. I will go back and play through the titles I missed, ok maybe not the first one, before I pick up and finish III or start IV. Assassin's Creed II will be available for Xbox Live Gold Members for free next month and then I will be playing through it eagerly. Revelations is download and waiting, although I admit I played through some of it yesterday. The game is beautiful and has my attention. <br><br><a href="http://capcomvancouver.com/" target="_blank">Dead Rising 3</a> also caught my attention at E3 this year. Gamefly delivered Dead Rising 2 Saturday as well. Five minutes of the overly color saturated game completely failed to grasp my interest or attention. To be honest, first impression of the game reminded me of World of Warcraft style console game because of the color saturation and graphic style. Needless to say, this style of Dead Rising game doesn't have my attention and so I will wait for more information by Dead Rising 3 before committing to the new game.</font><br><br><a><img height="509" src="http://www.bestvideogamesevermade.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Halo3.jpg" width="900"></a><br><br><font size="3">Halo 5 caught my attention as well, mainly because I haven't a clue as to why Masterchief has a cracked mask on his helmet. I need to know what happened in <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Halo-4/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8024d530919" target="_blank">Halo 4</a>! . I put in <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-us/product/halo-3/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8024d5307e6" target="_blank">Halo 3</a> and then hubby reminded me that I watched him play it to completion. I vaguely remember the story so I decided to give it a go and thus I fired it up. The controls and my shooter skills are never great match and so I set the game to casual. Then I realized that the fine folks over at Bungee won't give achievement points to those of us who play games for the story and not our "skills" at a shooter. I will watch hubby play through Halo 4 rather than frustrate the achievement whore (I admit it) in me by not getting credit for playing the game.<br><br>I am enjoying giving the 360 a spin while it is in triple digits outside. Indeed, calling attention to a physician's emotional pain might be seen as distracting and self-indulgent. It is, after all, the physician's role to ease the suffering of others.</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Yet as Dr. Ofri points out, how doctors feel matters. And while she does write of joy, pride and gratitude, her emphasis is on negative emotions — which exert the strongest influence on medical care, particularly when a case grows unexpectedly complicated, frustrating or unyielding. "This is where factors other than clinical competency come into play," she writes. An unwell doctor is a bad doctor.</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Dr. Ofri is an internist at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City, which cares for legions of indigent, uninsured patients, as well as a large population of immigrants. "I wasn't able to step past my own issues," she writes. A study of oncologists cited by Dr. Ofri found that these specialists learned to compartmentalize their grief. Yet the most striking finding of the study was how poorly that strategy worked. Grief spilled into the physicians' daily lives and sapped them of their inner strength.</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">After the newborn's death, Eva walled herself off from all emotions, only to have them return many months later with full-blown <a href="http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/post-traumatic-stress-disorder/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="In-depth reference and news articles about Post-traumatic stress disorder." class="meta-classifier" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">post-traumatic stress disorder</a>.</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Bitterness is here, too. Dr. Ofri devotes much of one chapter to malpractice lawsuits. She describes her own harrowing experiences of being sued — in one instance, by the family of a woman she had not just grown close to, but gone well out of her way to care for. "Dealing with a lawsuit is often likened to having a death in the family," she writes. "Doctors end up (often unconsciously) grieving for the doctors they used to be."</p><p itemprop="reviewBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Counterintuitively, perhaps, Dr. Ofri is at her most compelling when telling other physicians' stories. It's almost as if she still needs to keep a slight cool distance from her own experiences. But this is not necessarily a sign of weak writing.
