Color me impressed! A few more years of that and we might even make it back to the declining long-term trend line. Two Intel Getting Started training of trainer workshops were held in the Free State and North West provinces.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></b></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Free State - Thaba Nchu</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div><br /><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">The training took place on 7 – 8 September 2013. SchoolNet’s trainer, Mr Daniel Maedi found the laptops were connected and ready for training. Of the expected 22 educators only 12 educators attended but these were mostly CAT educators at their respective schools hence their computer skills were advanced. The trainer went through all the modules and managed to demonstrate how to use the tip-sheets and help-guide. These participants used the help-guide as directed and they had no problems in navigating the CD. The trainer explained that all modules follow the same style. Following the module outline educators were asked to complete this section on their own. The trainer created a folder for the Motheo Training and sent the link to participants. The aim was to check if they are able to access email and use it confidentially. On a second day participants came early but the positive spirit was spoiled by the lack of internet. Participants showcased their work briefly. The teachers were responding to the following questions, “What have you done with Word Processor?; How can you use that in the classroom?; What new skills have you learned?; and what were your challenges and how did you overcome them?”. Most of them came out with flying colours.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br />On Day 3 the teachers used the Help guide to assist themselves.<b> </b>Trainees were working independently and requested that we go on for another day to complete all the activities. The internet worked on the third day but most of the activities that needed internet were not done.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Both these workshops were hugely successful and is focused on building capacity at the various Vodacom centres as well creating a hub of teacher professional development in local communities where teachers have easy access to gain ICT experience and develop and master skills in the integration of ICT into teaching and learning activities in the classroom.</span></div></div>

Up until the release of Mandisa's "Overcomer" at least one from the duo of Carrie Underwood and Phillip Phillips have been in the Top 100, and on the first week they both fell out of the top 100, "Overcomer" was still at #92 to represent the Idols. However, <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/billboard-chart-date-110213.htm" target="_blank">this week on the album chart</a> with Carrie's "Blown Away" at #158 and Phillip's "The World From the Side of the Moon" at #142, "Overcomer" has stayed steady at #111 on its eighth week (from #112 last week), so the lone Idol in the Top 100 is the brand new one, Scotty McCreery's "See You Tonight" at #6 (#1 Country) with sales of 52,000. Scotty's debut sales are the best Idol album sales since Fantasia's release of "Side Effects of You" back in May (where she sold 91K first week and landed at #2).<br /><br />I am certain Scotty's album will stay in the Top 100 for several weeks, and when Kelly Clarkson's "Wrapped in Red" album is released next week he will have more American Idol company at the top of the charts, followed by Kellie Pickler and Daughtry's releases in November ("The Woman I Am" on Nov 11 and "Baptized" on Nov 19). Phillip even has his live EP released on the Nov 19 so he should see another jump in sales too. There should be American Idols everywhere on the charts this holiday season.<br /><br />Another interesting thing I noticed before watching the Cardinals sloppily lose to the Red Sox last night, was that Mary J. Blige sang the National Anthem. Why is that noteworthy on an American Idol blog? Well, last year it was <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/phillip-phillips-national-anthem-game-1-world-series-2012-video.htm" target="_blank">Phillip Phillips</a> and the year before then it was <a href="http://www.mjsbigblog.com/scotty-mccreery-sings-the-national-anthem-at-world-series-game-1.htm" target="_blank">Scotty McCreery</a> who sang the anthem at Game 1. Was Mary J. Blige the stand in for Candice Glover since "Music Speaks" was never released earlier this month? What to Make of "What Starbucks Gets that Architects Don’t"

This week architects have been busy <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/440358/why-i-left-the-architecture-profession/">reading</a> and <a href="http://archinect.com/news/article/84452042/what-starbucks-gets-that-architects-don-t">commenting on</a> Christine Outram's <a href="https://medium.com/what-i-learned-building/a844ec3343da">essay at Medium</a>, "What Starbucks Gets that Architects Don't: Or why I left the architecture profession." On my first read a couple days ago I got the message (architects need to listen to the people who occupy their buildings) and agreed generally that buildings and spaces could be designed better, although I detested the way it was written and didn't find that round tables at Starbucks to be a strong argument for architects talking to and listening to people. <br /><br /><a href="https://medium.com/what-i-learned-building/a844ec3343da"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvjFcgEgwFj7kJC9YIzxyMRIqq6IN2Vz1RLqbY0lMg8ZL9zOC-RtJx_EJCkaYQ55b-SSozEvZksbFHFQs2WE6Q6RFbYUccWLaIsXcuqstJQdqTgxhZ9PayVjsfc64C8NLp1o8jjQ3FgXAE/s1600/Starbucks-Medium.jpg" /></a><br /><br />To make just one comment on her article in this blog post, it's worth focusing on what I think is the gist of her argument:<br /><blockquote>"You [architects] don’t understand people. I correct myself. You don’t listen to people."</blockquote>These sentences come right at the beginning of her piece, setting up her argument about Starbucks ("Form follows feeling") and using the Internet to poll people about things like where a new shop should really be located (something usually outside an architect's scope). But what if her statements are incorrect? I correct myself. What if there is a more accurate criticism about architects?:<br /><blockquote><i>You [architects] are people, but you don't listen to yourselves, to what's inside.</i></blockquote>This statement may sound a bit goody-goody or mushy at first, but my point is that by focusing on users as a distinct group of people—them, not us—former-architect Outram is perpetuating the gulf between the two. Actually, I'd argue that architects are also Starbucks customers (and homeowners, and students, and the other people that use buildings), and given their education and practical experience they are in a unique position to gauge how design can make one's cup of coffee in a chain cafe a better experience, to use her example.<br /><br />Is it necessary to poll hundreds of coffee drinkers to determine that round tables "protect self-esteem for those...flying solo"? Or could an architect have come to the same determination by believing their impression that round tables work better in some environments than square tables, be it by observing patrons at a local cafe or in a public park, or by choosing a round table over a square one themselves? Any architect will admit that all of their observations and experiences influence how they think about architecture, so I'm wont to believe the latter.<br /><br />So then why don't architects listen to what's inside? The obvious conclusion would be to blame clients—after all, they are the entities that sit in that supposed gulf between architects and users. Yet the case of Starbucks shows (if anything) that clients are open to design solutions when they lead to benefits both for them and whom they serve; and to make a fairly safe assumption, a developer should be open to design solutions that make residents happier so they can ask for higher rents or selling prices.<br /><br />But traditionally the client's bottom line has driven decision-making, therefore conditioning architects to prioritize that over human needs. Therefore I'd wager that architects don't listen to what's inside because they're afraid of ignoring what they see as the client's wishes or of even losing the job. Yet ultimately the architect exists to balance human needs (the users, as filtered through the architect's own experiences and expertise) with those of the client, as well as with the environment and other considerations that are greater than both.<br /><br />So I believe that architects <i>do</i> listen to people, internalizing conversations and experiences so as to make better decisions about design. Often they don't follow through on those feelings and therein lies some of what Outram is getting at. I don't believe architects need to carry out online polls or data mine (what people in advertising, Outram's current gig, do) to create buildings and spaces that are in line with how people want to feel. Architects can interpret such data if it exists, but not at the expense of understanding themselves and the shared human condition.

For Elliot the whole experience has felt somewhat unreal.
