It started with him saying that it would be “catastrophic” for congress to fail to support the mission in Syria. Then, a day or so later, he voted “no” on the proposal in the Foreign Relations Committee. Then, he said he would vote for it if they would add language expanding the scope of the mission and setting the stage for all-out war. 2013 voters won't let go of Bolling

There it was again in Saturday's <i>Richmond Times-Dispatch</i> ... another letter to the editor urging voters to write in Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling for Governor. At a time when you would expect the write-in talk to die down, it isn't. Tonight yet another person told me they were writing in the LG. It's something I hear on a regular basis.<br /><br />On August 29, a <a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor-for-august/article_a7ea5edd-e906-5435-98cf-72663a94a094.html">letter writer to the RTD</a> wrote:<br /><blockquote>Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has no one to blame for his  lackluster polling numbers but himself. When he became greedy and  unceremoniously pushed Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling out the front door, he  immediately lost the moderate support.<br /><br />If Cuccinelli had run again for attorney general  or lieutenant governor supporting Bolling (with his moderate force) for  governor, polling data would probably be very different. If the current  trend continues, it is likely that Virginia will have a second-rate  governor with little or no elective or governing experience.<br /><br />Joseph Childress. Whether that’s the right or wrong answer will be determined when the ratings start to come in.</div><div data-key="AatIkw" data-num="2" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">At a time when shrinking network audiences are the norm, the “Quiz” is already winning attention for the scale of its ambitions, as symbolized by the three-story arena that has taken shape in the Clinton neighborhood of Manhattan, where the game will be played. In keeping with the million-second theme, it has the appearance of a gigantic hourglass; its sheer size almost says, “AMC and Netflix and YouTube can’t do this!”</div><div data-key="AidAtN" data-num="3" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">After its debut on Monday, “Quiz” will be broadcast on NBC for an hour a night, every night, until Sept. 19, with one break for “Sunday Night Football.” In some ways, it is a throwback to a long-ago era when families would gather around the television set for big prime-time game shows. According to NBC, there hasn’t been a live game show scheduled in prime time since the 1960s.</div><div data-key="BttAwt" data-num="4" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Back then, though, viewers could only shout answers at the TV. Now, they can play along at home with an app. And when the game is not being played on TV, it will continue as a live, continuous stream on <a href="http://nbc.com/" style="color: #666699;" target="_">NBC.com</a>.</div><div data-key="CsoCah" data-num="5" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Contestants, some of whom will be picked to compete on the basis of their Internet play, will take turns sitting in the “money chair,” where every second spent answering trivia questions is worth $10. Correct answers help them reach Winners Row, an area on the set where the five best players will live and sleep (and keep answering questions, lest they be kicked out of the top five) until the million seconds are up.</div><div data-key="TitTpw" data-num="6" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">“This is the Olympics of quiz,” said Stephen Lambert, the British television producer who offered the idea to Paul Telegdy, NBC’s president of alternative and late-night programming. In the pitch, Mr. Lambert described the game “almost like a tennis match between two contestants.” After all, nothing attracts more viewers to broadcast television than big sporting events. That’s partly why the “Quiz” will try to look and feel like such an event, with its open-air setting.</div><div data-key="StqOtf" data-num="7" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Since the quiz show isn’t taped like, say, “Jeopardy,” some questions will be about the day’s news. “You might be asked, ‘President Obama signed what into law this morning?’ ” said the executive producer, David Hurwitz. Other questions will be asked by celebrities — inevitably, NBC celebrities. (“If there’s a question about the weather, who better to ask it than Al Roker?” Mr. Telegdy said.) On the final night, the final contestants on Winners Row will vie for a grand prize that could theoretically top out at $10 million, though it’s likely to be closer to $5 million.</div><div data-key="EaNTst" data-num="8" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Executives at NBC haven’t actually said this, but they clearly want the “Quiz” to be nothing short of a national event — the kind of big-ticket, must-see spectacle that turns up less and less often on the broadcast networks. To that end, the executives have hired Ryan Seacrest to host and have spent tens of millions of dollars to promote the game show this summer. They say that even some of their typical rivals might be caught rooting for it: Mr. Telegdy said a “competitive éminence grise from elsewhere in TV land” — he wouldn’t name the person — had sent him a well-wishing e-mail that said bluntly, “We all need this right now.”</div><div data-key="TpaIsi" data-num="9" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">The producers are aware that comparisons to the blockbuster ABC show “<a href="http://millionairetv.dadt.com/" style="color: #666699;" title="Its Web site">Who Wants to be a Millionaire</a>” are probably inevitable (though there is no phone-a-friend option on this show). “Millionaire,” hosted by Regis Philbin, wowed the television industry when it drew 10, 20 and sometimes even 30 million viewers in 1999 and 2000. It continues to chug along in syndication, now with Cedric the Entertainer as the host. One difference is that “Millionaire” was already a proven hit in Britain when it arrived in the United States; “Million Second Quiz” will start stateside first. If successful, it will spread around the world.</div><div data-key="IatBhn" data-num="10" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">In a telephone interview, Mr. Telegdy said that “the line will probably go dead, and a robot will eject me from my seat” if he uttered a specific ratings prediction. But his noncommittal answer was telling in and of itself: the goal, he said, is to “get people talking about NBC.”</div><div data-key="OuaSip" data-num="11" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Once upon a time, that network didn’t have to try hard to achieve that; now it does. So its parent company, Comcast, is having all of its various properties support “Quiz” through ads, guest appearances, reports on newscasts and the like — a strategy that it calls “symphony” and that was previously applied to the singing competition “The Voice.”</div><div data-key="MSwMBa" data-num="12" itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Mr. Seacrest, who is best known for hosting Fox’s “American Idol” and who also has a wide-ranging contract with NBC, said that after he heard the initial pitch from Mr. Lambert and Mr. Telegdy, the NBCUniversal chief executive, Steve Burke, called him to reiterate how important the “Quiz” was going to be. But other than how quickly he and Manning have established a rapport, Welker's production is hardly surprising for a player long-established as the NFL's best slot receiver.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Thomas, with his two-touchdown, 110-yard performance against the Ravens, flashed the potential to become the type of game-changing tight end the Broncos haven't had since Shannon Sharpe. That's the guy whom Broncos envisioned when they drafted the former college basketball player in 2011, but had yet to see because of two injury-plagued years.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;"><span style="font-weight: 700;">MANNING'S NIGHT: </span><a href="http://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/09/peyton-manning-7-touchdowns/" style="color: #1990e5; text-decoration: none;" title="http://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/09/peyton-manning-7-touchdowns/">Stats to sum 7 TDs</a></div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">After the way Thomas played Thursday, opposing defenses might be just as concerned with covering him as they are with receivers Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">"I am not sure how they will answer, or if they will, but it will be interesting to see how teams play Julius all season. He is a big guy, he definitely will make teams have a conversation," Manning said. "You want guys that make teams have the discussion, 'How are we going to handle this guy?'"</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">The Ravens had no answer. On his first touchdown, a 24-yarder in the first quarter, he found yards of open space behind a pair of linebackers, and was untouched by safety James Ihedigbo at the goal line. On the second touchdown, Thomas blew past the Ravens' other safety, Michael Huff, then spun away from an attempted tackle by Ihedigbo on his way to the end zone.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">It appeared the Ravens underestimated just how speedy the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Thomas was, and how hard he would be to tackle.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">"He's a fast guy, for how big he is," said Broncos tight end Virgil Green. "A lot of people think that as tight ends, we're not that fast. But we've got some 4.5 [second 40-yard dash] guys in that room. We take a lot of pride in our speed and getting open. But those games didn't count, and Thomas, despite being in his third season, still has so little game experience.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Thursday wasn't Thomas' debut, but it might as well have been. He had only catch, for five yards, in the second game of his rookie season in 2011. As he slogged through his rehab, Thomas dropped down the depth chart last season behind Joel Dreessen, Jacob Tamme and Green, and was inactive for the Broncos' final 13 games, including the playoff loss to the Ravens.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">"It's one of those things that happens in life that kind of changes who you are," Thomas said. "To spend a year and two weeks trying to get back to where you left off, having setbacks, trying to find a way back on the field, then having to watch all of last season. That's something I'm never going to forget."</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Yet through those two trying seasons, time when it would have been somewhat understandable had either the Broncos or Thomas given up, Fox never forgot about the potential Thomas flashed in his one year of college football at Portland State and during his rookie training camp after the Broncos selected him with a fourth-round pick in 2011.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">And Thomas never stopped dreaming about not just earning a spot on the game-day roster, but about scoring touchdowns.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">"I definitely saw myself in the end zone. I saw myself making plays. That's why I pushed myself so hard to get back, because I felt like I had the ability to do it. I just wanted to have the feeling of being able to contribute and do something to help this team out," Thomas said. "In your head, you see yourself making plays, so to not be able to go out on the field and do it is tough. It's just a surreal moment for me. I'm just happy to be back playing football."</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Thomas' emergence will also force the Broncos to be creative with their other tight ends. Thomas already has leap-frogged Tamme on the depth chart, and is going to make it difficult for the Broncos to give the starting job back to Dreessen whenever he is cleared to return from the knee issues that kept him out of the preseason. Dreessen, the Broncos' best blocking tight end, will make $2.5 million this year in the second year of a three-year contract.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">Thomas, by comparison, is a bargain, with a salary of just $555,000.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 60px;">"With the Joel Dreessen injury, one door closes and other door opens," Fox said. After dedicating her life to social justice, women’s suffrage and myriad other causes, she died in 1935, four years after winning her Nobel Prize.
