As you probably know by now, there was a brouhaha last weekend at the Master’s when Tiger Woods made an illegal drop and someone viewer call into Augusta National or CBS or someone and snitched on him. From the very moment we heard the news, the entire staff here at IWS World Media began searching for the man or woman who ratted Tiger out. It took some pretty serious snooping, but we finally did it. I’m not </i></div><i>ashamed to admit either. Hell, I’m proud of it. I’d do it again too if I could. I only wish I could have been the guy who turned in Craig Stadler and Pete Azinger back in the day when they got busted. I won’t say who called CBS on them, but I do know and admire them. </i><br /><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><i>See, I’ve always been a law and order kind of guy. I follow the rules and I expect everyone else to do so too. Right here on the wall of my home office I have my arm bands from my glory days at Willie Ray Smith Middle School right here in Beaumont. I was named Hall Monitor of the Year two years in a row. Nobody else has ever achieved this and nobody else ever will. You know why? CAUSE THEY LACK DISCIPLINE! </i></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><i>I remember the first person I ever told on. I busted my older brother’s friend Huan Deng drinking straight from the milk carton. I told his mother about and when she hesitated I reminded her that we had a rule against such activities and to allow Huan to openly defy them like this would result in a lifetime of him flaunting rules until he ended up in prison. So, she grounded him. Sure, he beat the hell out of me for it, but sometimes you gotta just take an ass-whipping for justice. </i></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><i>Probably my greatest achievement in rule enforcement, well until now, was when I caught little Rosalinda Rodriguez taking three cookies instead of two at our Valentine’s Day Celebration my senior year at Ozen High School here in Beaumont. A lot of people thought it was really wrong of me to out her since she was my girlfriend, but my first loyalty has always been to the rules. Every time I think about me ignoring the fact that Rosie was my girlfriend and letting me finger bang her and enforcing the rules my chest swells with pride. </i></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><i>Obviously bookkeeping is a job I was born to do. Man, I keep a close eye on those expense accounts at work. You know guys, if you have a per diem of $58.25 a day and you turn in a report claiming $57.99 every single time, I’m gonna get suspicious. A little creativity in your embezzlement is all I ask for. Sure, I’m not the most popular guy at work, but I’m not there to make friends. I’m there to protect the company from cheaters! </i></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><i>Now that I’m about ready to retire though, I think I’ll be keeping my rule enforcement activities close to home. I live in a nice gated community and I’ll be dammed if I’m gonna let any of my lazy-ass neighbors drive down MY home value! I constantly have to call the Homeowner’s Association President Shastina Johnson about people leaving their garage doors open and tell her to do her damn job and enforce the rules! This just invites petty theft. These damn kids don’t respect nothing! </i></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><i>Saturday morning I was taking my poodle Poo-Poo for our usual walk when I wandered by Aakar Gupta’s house. Something didn’t look right so I pretended that Poo-Poo needed to do her business. When I acted like I was scooping up here droppings, I casually measured the height of the grass in his yard. Just as a thought. An eighth of an inch over what the bylaws allow! So, I had to call Shastina and have her write him up. </i></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><i> </i><div class="MsoNormal"><i>Yeah, I could have waited to see if he was going to mow during the weekend, but that’s not my style. I don’t wait until things have all gone to hell and anarchy breaks out to act. If I don’t say something and he doesn’t mow, next think you know people are putting pink flamingos out in their yards! I’m not gonna have that on my head. I'm not sure there is a truly a polite way to tell an overweight person that they are, in fact, overweight.  All I know is that I know I'm overweight, and I don't want to be reminded that I am, especially whenever I'm in an already vulnerable position.<br /><br />There's nothing like being told you're overweight as you're sitting in the obstetrician's office with no pants on (all for no reason, might I add!). <br /><br />I guess it was only a matter of time before this conversation occurred.  I was so proud up to this point that my baby doctor had yet to address my weight.  I figured I was doing well, not gaining too much, since they never said a word to me about it. <br /><br />It was only just last week after I had an appointment with a surgeon, over those dreadful hemorrhoids, that I learned what my current weight was - 269 lbs.  I was 240 lbs when I got pregnant.  Then I lost about 5 lbs due to the sickness.  So I've gained roughly 30 lbs so far with this pregnancy.  I was also pleasantly surprised at that number, since at my heaviest when starting this journey, I weighed in at 263 lbs. <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheZl1zULr-ASTjk8C89KNlqT_G3OhWkdVnFFhVUOIu6okt0WxY8-8TKvAVX91VnhbSKRql_7w8oEH8cLCR9zChLLLEzs6jzE4-tNYArpmwfipnOdsUXMEnySv9Ob-kL_1I2oI_WEpeW_I/s1600/30+weeks+pregnant.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheZl1zULr-ASTjk8C89KNlqT_G3OhWkdVnFFhVUOIu6okt0WxY8-8TKvAVX91VnhbSKRql_7w8oEH8cLCR9zChLLLEzs6jzE4-tNYArpmwfipnOdsUXMEnySv9Ob-kL_1I2oI_WEpeW_I/s400/30+weeks+pregnant.jpg" width="266" /></a></div><br /><br />Now, don't get me wrong.  Obviously those numbers mentioned above are nothing to celebrate.  Still, all of my blood work and vitals and tests always come back with flying colors.  My blood pressure and heart rate are always excellent (they say!), and so despite my heftiness, I thought I was doing pretty well.<br /><br />Today I went in to the doctor because I might have a urinary tract infection, though I have to wait a few days for the results.  My practice is made up of many, many doctors and midwives, so I have yet to see the same person twice.   Today, for the first time, I was not happy.  I went in complaining about sharp, shooting pain in my cervical area, along with pain in my bladder every time I stood up.  I've also been having a lot of pressure in my pelvis.  The doctor stood there, and in all of her snarkiness, basically told me that everything I was experiencing was normal.  I have even been having cramps off and on, and so I was getting really worried about what was happening.  She basically said, "You're pregnant, what did you expect?"  Well, gee, I don't know - I've never been pregnant before!<br /><br />But, apparently the more important topic on her agenda was my 4 lbs weight gain in the two weeks since I had last been there.  She said I should not be gaining any more weight between now and the delivery date!  Not that I want to gain weight, but honestly, I'm not trying to gain weight either - it's just happening.<br /><br />Now, none of this is news to me.  I know the recommended weight gain for pregnancy varies depending on your starting weight (the heavier you are, the less it should be).  Still, I can promise you that I don't sit here and gorge myself.  In fact, I have a hard enough time eating everyday as it is.  In all honesty, if it didn't make me so sick, I could go all day and not eat.  I simply do not desire food.  For the first time in my life - I DO NOT DESIRE FOOD!  Now certainly, I'm not eating healthfully either.  Too much stuff initiates heartburn and nausea so I eat whatever I can keep down.  Still, for her to say that to me was like knocking the wind out of me.  It reminded me of times as a pre-teen, going to the pediatrician and him telling me, "All you have to do is eat your fruits and vegetables and not eat junk, and you'll lose the weight."  Easy for a "civilian" to say <i>(sidenote: "civilian" is a term a former Weight Watchers leader used for naturally skinny people who don't worry much about eating and obsessing over food)</i>. <br /><br />The fact is, this doctor rubbed me the wrong way before she even got started on the weight lecture, but that sure was the cherry on top. <br /><br />Sometimes I feel like even though doctors are supposed to be the experts, they just aren't.  They don't know what it's like to be in my shoes (or any other overweight person's shoes), unless they've stood in those shoes before.  I didn't get the impression that she had - given how she bragged about giving birth to triplets despite being the "tiniest person in this entire practice - tehe".  Ugh! <br /><br />I left today's appointment feeling totally blown and defeated.  She almost made me feel like I came in for nothing, even though I'm convinced I have a UTI.  It just doesn't make me feel like I can trust someone and what they say to me, when they make a mockery out of my circumstances. <br /><br /><br />

Yadav's 30-year-old wife, a patient of breast cancer, is at Tata Memorial Hospital, which abuts the footpath. She is likely to undergo a surgery, he says. Every few days, he calls up his school-going daughter and son, and tells them that their mother is recuperating well and that he is staying at a guest house. As we speak, suddenly everyone perks up. A group of four, carrying packets of food and a jerry-can filled with milk, come by. They are members of a charitable group that provides these footpath dwellers with food. Each individual gets a small polythene bag of rice and vegetables and a glass of milk. Children get extra milk. A little further away, an elderly couple from Rajashtan, who later identify themselves as Raja Ram and Laxmi Devi, ask for more milk. Devi underwent a session of chemotherapy the previous day, and she says she is unable to consume anything solid. But unlike most others, these are cancer patients and their relatives. If you look closely, you can make this out. There will be a balding child with a mask on his face, a man whose face has been operated upon and has a tube through his nose to consume milk, a woman with a dash of vermillion on her upper forehead even though she has no hair, and medical files that peep out of polythene bags. And when darkness falls, all of them will vacate the footpath because they are not allowed to sleep here, and find space outside the many shops in the vicinity. Some of them will leave in a few weeks. And some of them will take months to return home. Old defunct mills are being converted into pubs and nightclubs, and old constructions being replaced by towering buildings. Some old buildings and chawls still stand and parts of some of these now serve as lodges for patients of the nearby Tata Memorial Hospital. Humayun Jafri, the hospital's public relations officer, says that Tata Memorial gets 40,000 to 50,000 new patients every year, most of them from other parts of the country. A gaudy skyscraper looms. Beside it, an equally tall building, covered in green and blue tarpaulin sheets, is under construction. On one Saturday evening, two cars blaring head-thumping music whizz by on the road outside. Sometimes a few of them chat, and sometimes they share a solemn silence, as though thinking the same thought. Much of the building is damp and dingy, the darkness exacerbated by clothes hung out to dry in the corridors. The ground and first two floors of the chawl have an air of liveliness. Children gather in parts of the corridors that get some sunlight to play cricket. Women snatch brief moments throughout the day to gossip. When evening comes, the corridors reverberate with the laughter of men. The third floor is not like that. He has been at Maharashtra Guest House for just over four months, a period in which he has undergone three chemotherapy sessions, with another two still to go. Three cousins from his town have come and gone at different points of his stay. He has befriended the toilet attendant, who lets him use it free. The boy underwent an operation for prostate cancer a few months ago, and now has a pouch at his waist that collects his urine. His only relatives are a mother who lives in Delhi and a sister who has a house in Panvel in Navi Mumbai. Saroj has been living like this all alone on the footpath outside the hospital for the past four months. Chettri has been upset for much of the week because an operation to remove a tumour in his large intestine was postponed. The hospital authorities told him that his doctor was taking a holiday for the festival. Chettri asks loudly what the other occupants have planned for Holi. "We must drink and play with colours. Let's get some meat also," he says in broken Hindi.
