But Will can only sit and watch with growing horror as his main court rival Maggie Gardner (Sophie Okonedo) makes this her moment to shine. He sees his own legal tricks and refutations played out before him and feels the same pain and dismay as the loved ones of victims whose killers his blind passion to win had turned loose in his past. It’s perhaps not that credible that a highly professional Oxford-educated individual might choose the solution that Will does, but in a very little time he has indulged in some dalliance with known criminals before retreating to the coast to drink, stab limpets with a penknife and to plot his own justice for Foyle.  </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For those expecting a frenzied last minute showdown between the killer and the wronged man, Foyle’s demise comes relatively early in proceedings. The outcome definitely requires some suspension of disbelief on the part of the viewer: not only for Foyle to have a convenient rare allergy, but also for the other elements required for Will’s plan to work to fall so neatly into place: the remote cottage, the shifty criminal contacts, the source of the allergen, the source of another epi-pen… However, two things redeem all of the unlikely circumstances. The first is the writing. Yes, the plot is arguably implausible and overblown in places, but no-one can deny that it is also clever and inventive. How many viewers saw those twists coming? Just as notable are the consistently high-class performances from the entire cast. Toby Kebbell is deliciously creepy as twice-freed murderer Foyle, Sophie Okonedo convinces as the wavering Maggie and Stephen Wight definitely deserves mention as the loyal Danny Monk. But David Tennant’s performance raises the series from what could easily be overblown melodrama to something quite sublime. From his boggling, breathless terror as he occupies a pub toilet mere feet from his quarry, to the raw emotion of his eulogy to his late wife, to his poker face as he listens to Maggie unravelling the means by which he dispatched Foyle, he doesn’t falter. However, the alternative, demonstrated here, is more horrific. As we leave Will we do so with the echo of Foyle's words to him during their first meeting: “You know, it’s funny. However do bear in mind that some of the details may be based on the original UK script and may be changed, or may be false. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">David Tennant’s character, based on DI Alec Hardy in the original, will be renamed Emmett Carver, according to the tapes. Carver was previously involved in the Rosemont investigation, where three girls disappeared. As the Karen White character, who has been following Carver’s history reveals, “He fumbled the Rosemont investigation then he all but vanished. Now suddenly he’s here, working this case.”</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hardy’s character is not the only one to be renamed for the American version. Local hack Olly becomes Owen, and he is now the uncle of Tom rather than his cousin, so it’s possible that he will be the Ellie character’s brother. I think we both know that. Can I hug you? Then I’ll leave you alone.” In the original version, Paul had only come to the town as a new priest a few years previously. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The town of <st1:city w:st="on">Broadchurch</st1:city>itself is renamed Gracepoint. It is a small coastal place in <st1:state w:st="on">California</st1:state>, the only town for twenty miles, with one road in and one road out. The nearest big town is <st1:city w:st="on">Sacramento</st1:city>. The residents of Gracepoint tend to live there all their lives, and some don’t even like to travel far afield. Lately there have been some newcomers, younger families coming for the schools or attracted by the views. Otherwise, people visit as tourists or to whale watch. Owen says that he surfs. There is little crime: just drunk driving, bored teens and graffiti. There has never been a murder before.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i>Gracepoint</i> goes into production in late January 2014 and is expected to air as part of the FOX 2014/15 season. His main rival in chambers, Maggie Gardner (Sophie Okonedo), has been engaged to defend Foyle and she is hungry to prove herself as equal to, if not better than Will. Never mind that she knew the victim socially. She scans the murder scene images, shots that show Kate as a bloodied, staring corpse – in stark contrast to the happy, vibrant video clips that Will and Jamie watch curled on a bed together – and sees the case as just work, as something that will be good for her. He hunts Will’s son Jamie on the journey home from school and manipulates the vulnerable and compliant Eileen Morris (Monica Dolan) who nervously concedes to his demands. He is even a significant presence in a key scene where he does not actually appear as he apparently stalks Maggie to her stylish, large-windowed ground floor flat. He battles to make his colleagues see the legal profession in the same way that he now sees it. It’s hard for him to view his world from the other side and to realise that although he can see exactly what Maggie Gardner is doing he is powerless to do anything about it.
