The Images of Architects

For the <a href="http://www.world-architects.com/en/pages/biennale-architettura-2012">2012 Venice Biennale</a>, Swiss architect <a href="http://www.olgiati.net/">Valerio Olgiati</a> curated a selection of "Pictographs—Statement of contemporary architects." Images that are in their head when they think. Images that show the origin of their architecture.<br /><br />In this book we find 44 individual "musées imaginaires". The most unique architects living today each present up to 10 images to explain the autobiographical roots of their oeuvre. The images are explanations, metaphors, foundations, memories and intentions. They are poetic and philosophical avowals. They reveal a personal perspective on thoughts. They show the roots of architecture and expectations concerning projects. Conscious and unconscious.<br /><br />This book has the format of a reader. As little as possible is said. The images are small, legible and interpretable as icons. The three capacitive navigation buttons sit below the screen, while the earpiece (also black in colour), notification light, and the front facing camera, are located above the screen. To be honest, the front has a very plasticky feel to it, but then this phone costs Rs. 13,990, so you don't expect premium materials to be used.</div><br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">The front of the phone is black in colour, while the back is white. Looking from the sides, it gives the impression that the phone bears both colours since the removable back cover doesn't just cover the back and extends to the sides.</div><br /><strong><u><span style="font-size: large;">Display</span></u></strong><br /><br />The USP of the Canvas HD is indeed its HD screen. The phone's 5-inch HD IPS screen sports a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a colour depth of 16.7 million. Thanks to the higher resolution, text, icons and images look much sharper compared to the Canvas 2 and the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Grand.<br /><br />Under sun visibility was good though the screen is very reflective. We also noticed that there is minor gap between two consecutive camera shots in the continuous shot mode. Be gentle with yourself

Be gentle with yourself. How many times have I received this advice over the years? From my friends, my relatives, my coworkers and my blog friends (who I consider real friends).<br /><br />I heard the words, but I didn't listen to them. I didn't know how to be gentle with myself. I didn't know how important it was to really live these four little words, "Be gentle with yourself". <br /><br />The diagnosis of cancer is opening my eyes to so many things. Staring my own mortality in the face is making me take stock of my life. I'm seeing things so differently now. I never would have done this without cancer. I would have continued stumbling through life, dealing with things like I always have, filled with anger at the unfairness of it all. I have always stressed out over the smallest things, and the bigger the event, the bigger the stress reaction. Now I have to step back, re-evaluate and think about what I'm doing to my body internally when I react to external forces.<br /><br />I'm reading a couple really good books, one is about dealing with cancer (or any serious illness, but the focus is on cancer), and the other one is preventing cancer. Preventing a recurrence of cancer is the same as preventing cancer. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=love+miracles+and+medicine&tag=googhydr-20&index=stripbooks&hvadid=22864665001&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1901531285899508474&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_7ylb66xd1r_b" target="_blank">Love, Medicine & Miracles</a> by Bernie S. Siegel, M.D. is an amazing book. Dr. Siegel is a traditional medical doctor and writes about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. I love this book! The other book that I highly recommend for everyone, even if you don't have cancer (and especially if you don't want to get cancer) is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Guide-Cancer-3rd-Integrative/dp/1587613581/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1367506599&sr=1-1&keywords=the+definitive+guide+to+cancer" target="_blank">The Definitive Guide to Cancer</a> by Lise N. Alschuler, ND, FABNO, and Karolyn A. Gazella. This book takes a holistic approach to cancer prevention (and recognizes the benefits of traditional medicine). It focuses on nutrition, diet and stress reduction. It's also an excellent book. I love how they talk about the 80/20 rule. Eat clean 80 percent of the time, and it's okay if you bend the rules other 20 percent. In other words, a cookie now and then won't kill me. <br /><br />Here's an excerpt from The Definitive Guide to Cancer, page 40-41. This is from chapter three, Prevention is Paramount:<br /><br />"But for those of us trying to prevent cancer recurrence, enhancing our overall health will help add quantity and quality to the years we have left. The first step in making changes and setting goals is to access where you are right now. So to that end, and without judgement, take some time to evaluate your life. On a piece of paper, write down your answers to these questions:<br /><br />1. How many hours a week do you spend working?<br /><br />2. How many hours a week do you spend playing?<br /><br />3. How many hours a week do you spend doing some type of spiritual practice (praying, mediating, volunteering, connecting with nature)?<br /><br />Next, make a list of activities, things, and people that make you feel happy, at peace, and fulfilled. How many hours a week do you spend with those people or doing those things? At the end of your life, no matter when that occurs, what will you cherish more:  money or moments, power or peace; chaos or caring? A life well lives is a life well loved, and that begins with self-love. Don't let everyday obstacles get in the way of such devoted self-love."<br /><br />Now if that doesn't make you want to buy this book, I don't know what will. It's filled with this type of thinking, as well as a lengthy discussion on nutrition and diet. <br /><br />If nothing else, cancer is life changing. Even if I only have a few years left, I intend to make those the best years possible. Whether it's five or twenty-five, I intend to have a life well lived.

Molecules in the brain trigger ageing : Nature News & Comment

The area of the brain that controls growth, reproduction and metabolism also kick-starts ageing, according to a study published today inNature1. The finding could lead to new treatments for age-related illnesses, helping people to live longer.<br><br>Dongsheng Cai, a physiologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and his colleagues tracked the activity of NF-κB — a molecule that controls DNA transcription and is involved in inflammation and the body's response to stress — in the brains of mice. They found that the molecule becomes more active in the brain area called the hypothalamus as a mouse grows older.<br><br>Further tests suggested that NF-κB activity helps to determine when mice display signs of ageing. Animals lived longer than normal when they were injected with a substance that inhibited the activity of NF-κB in immune cells called microglia in the hypothalamus. Mice that received a substance to stimulate the activity of NF-κB died earlier.<br><br>"We have provided scientific evidence for the concept that systemic ageing is influenced by a particular tissue in the body," says Cai.<br><br><b>Health and well-being</b><div><b><br></b>The researchers examined the health and mental abilities of the mice six months after the initial experiment. Animals injected with the NF-κB inhibitor performed better than controls on tasks designed to test their cognition and movement. They also showed less age-related decline in muscle strength, skin thickness, bone mass and tail-tendon integrity. The mice in which NF-κB was activated experienced more age-related decline. The results were similar in males and females.<br><br>Most previous studies have simply observed how long mice live after treatment, says Richard Miller, a pathologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. "Looking at different aspects of age-specific functions is a very good idea," he says. "It makes a much stronger case that the whole ageing process has in some way been decelerated."<br><br>Treating middle-aged mice to suppress the production of IKK-β, an enzyme that activates NF-κB, in microglia in the hypothalamus also reduced age-related cognitive and physical declines. Suppressing IKK-β in all areas of the brain increased median lifespan by 23% and maximum lifespan by 20%.<br><br>The researchers report that NF-κB counteracts the effects of a hormone called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), reducing brain-cell growth and shutting down the mice's reproductive systems. Injecting mice with GnRH slowed down ageing and triggered the growth of new brain cells. That suggests that inflammation and stress are an evolutionary signal to the body to stop reproducing, which triggers the start of the ageing process. <br><br>The findings are "a major breakthrough in ageing research", says David Sinclair, a molecular biologist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.<br><br>He says that a key finding is that blocking the effects of NF-κB produced anti-ageing effects even when it was done in middle age. "If we're going to translate this research into medicines that can help people, clearly we cannot start very early in life."<br><br>The research "is certainly worth a lot of additional attention", says Miller. "But this study says the white coat doesn't protect you. Since having lap band surgery 13 years ago, at age 43, he has maintained his weight at 210 pounds, following a regimen of regular, moderate exercise and 800 calories a day. "I was treated completely differently by patients and doctors," he said. Typing, however, has a speed benefit and doesn't require a "cone of silence" as a everyone talking to their glasses would. I think keyboarding will remain part of the productive equipment of most of us - until our devices can read our brain waves. For those who type less than 30 words a minute and work in a quiet office, this is likely to be true.
