<div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <p>By Kate Kelland, Health and Science Correspondent</p> <p>LONDON (Reuters) – HIV epidemics are becoming more concentrated in marginalized groups such as sex workers, drug users and gay men, and could defy global attempts to combat AIDS without a change in attitudes, according to a U.N. special envoy.</p> <p>Michel Sidibe, formerly head of UNAIDS and now tackling HIV and AIDS in Eastern Europe, says he would like to be able to celebrate without reservation vast global progress made in the past decade, but stubborn infection rates and alarming growth of outbreaks in hard-to-reach populations make that difficult.</p> <p>The risk, he says, is that as the world turns the tide of the generalized global AIDS epidemic, the virus will return to being a disease that plagues only certain groups, and the political will to overcome it there may fade.</p> <p>“If we do not address the roots of the problem, if we do not address stigma, discrimination and inappropriate legislation, if we don’t look at these people from a public health perspective, rather than from a delinquent, criminal perspective as we do now, then the trend will only go on,” Sidibe said in an interview.</p> <p>“Then the AIDS epidemic will become more and more a sum of these concentrated epidemics.”</p> <p>EXTRAORDINARY PROGRESS BREEDS HOPE</p> <p>Some 35.3 million people worldwide are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS, but the rising number of patients reflects great strides in recent years in developing sophisticated HIV tests and combination AIDS drugs and getting them to many of those who need them to stay alive.</p> <p>The annual AIDS death toll is falling, dropping to 1.6 million people in 2012, down from a peak of 2.3 million in 2005, and there are also steadily declining rates of new HIV infections: a third fewer in 2013 than in 2011.</p> <p>The progress has generated much hope – and many headlines – about the possible end of AIDS, or a potential world without HIV, or the chance of an AIDS-free generation, in our lifetimes.</p> <p>Sidibe refers to this – both the progress and the hope – as “extraordinary”.</p> <p>“I’m really concerned about the future of the AIDS epidemic, especially at a time when we are perhaps a little too optimistic because of the huge progress we are making from a technological and scientific perspective,” he said.</p> <p>“As we celebrate the extraordinary progress, we should also be conscious that we will not stop HIV and AIDS by just having more sophisticated drugs and only focusing on the generalized epidemic and not focusing enough on the complexities of the concentrated epidemics.”</p> <p>The worrisome groups are fairly clearly defined: Injecting drug users, who can pass the AIDS virus to each other by sharing needles and syringes, prostitutes and sex workers, who are often criminalized and have little access to health service, and gay and bisexual men – the population in which the HIV epidemic first started.</p> <p>A TALE OF TWO WOMEN</p> <p>To illustrate how little has changed in the battle against HIV among drugs users – particularly in regions such as Eastern Europe and central Asia – Sidibe tells the stories of two women.</p> <p>The first is Andrée, a drug user he met in Paris in 1986 who had no hope of effective HIV treatment, since there was none yet developed, and who ultimately died a lonely death. The second was Larissa from Yekaterinburg in Russia, a drug addict repeatedly arrested and locked up, deprived of medications for years and at one time sentenced to five years in a labor camp.</p> <p>“These stories are remarkably similar,” he said. “But Larissa’s is not from 1986, it’s from this year. Some 25 years passed between my meeting these two women, but their predicament was depressingly, tragically, the same.”</p> <p>Among gay men, Sidibe said, the situation is little better.</p> <p>In poor and middle-income countries, men who have sex with men and female sex workers are 19 and 13 times more likely to have HIV, respectively, than the rest of the population.</p> <p>Even in wealthy regions like western Europe and North America, HIV rates among gay men – or men who have sex with men (MSM) as Sidibe refers to them – stubbornly refuse to shift.</p> <p>HIV AMONG GAY MEN</p> <p>“In MSM populations, there is no sign it has decreased,” said Sidibe. “It has either been a stable number of new infections every year for 10 years, or it is an increasing trend. And this, in western Europe at least, is in the context of basically free and easy access to therapy and services.”</p> <p>Elsewhere, in China, for example, gay men alone account for more than 33 percent of new HIV infections, and projections indicate that gay men may account for half or more of all new infections in Asia by 2020.</p> <p>Sidibe admits that he is as frustrated and worried now, faced with these smaller but relentless HIV epidemics, as he was more than a decade ago when the vast generalized HIV and AIDS outbreak in Africa looked too overwhelming to begin to tackle.</p> <p>“We are a bit in disarray. We don’t know quite what it is that we should do. ‘Homeland’ Recap: Great Expectations [ BeritaTerkini ]

<h2>Tonight’s episode was bloody unpredictable, but did it take things a twist too far?</h2> <div class="body"> <p>You know that moment in this week’s installment of <em>Homeland</em> where <strong>Carrie Mathison</strong> takes off the polygraph equipment and ends her big “job interview” with terrorist mastermind <strong>Majid Javadi</strong>, and Javadi’s all “What. Are. You. Doing?” That’s kind of a familiar sensation after watching this episode, isn’t it? For both good and bad, “Still Positive,” directed by Lesli Linka Glatter from a script by Alexander Cary and Barbara Hall, threw curveballs left and right. Some of them landed right in the strike zone, but others beaned the proverbial batter.</p> <p></p> <p>Let’s start with the strong stuff. Turning the tables on Javadi so quickly – I mean, like, what, within ten total minutes of screentime from when she was initially abducted by his goons? – was one of <em>Homeland</em>‘s trademark plotting masterstrokes. Ever since the pilot, which revealed the truth about <strong>Brody</strong> when most other shows would have drawn out the is-he-or-isn’t-he guessing game for nearly an entire season, <em>Homeland</em>‘s surprises have frequently come not from doing something totally unexpected, like the reveal that Carrie and <strong>Saul</strong> were in cahoots about her mania and hospitalization, but from doing an expected thing far, far <em>earlier</em> than expected. Think back to the first half of Season Two, when Saul discovered Brody’s martyrdom tape and Carrie busted and turned him all within the first few episodes. It was clear Carrie and Saul were gonna drop the hammer on Javadi at some point; doing it in literally her first meeting with the guy was a fresh, fun take on the way spy games usually play out.</p> <p></p> <p>Seven Ways to Save ‘Homeland’</p> <p></p> <p>What’s more, it gave Carrie the chance to do something she hasn’t done in forever: swagger. She’s spent pretty much every moment since flipping Brody back to the side of the U.S. in Season Two in some kind of distress: captured by <strong>Abu Nazir</strong>, covering for Brody’s involvement in <strong>Vice President Walden’s</strong> death, flattened by the Langley bombing, helping Brody escape, deliberately experiencing a manic episode, getting sold out by Saul to Congress, spending time in the psych ward, pretending to sell out her country to Iran, running around trying to find <strong>Dana Brody</strong>, getting kidnapped by Javadi’s minions. Sure, the whole scheme with Saul showed she’s still a brilliant operative, but her brilliance hinged on being <em>un</em>hinged. Here, it was demonstrated by her coolly stopping her own polygraph test and methodically telling one of the most skilled and dangerous intelligence operatives in the world that she’d beaten him at his own game. She even got some good jokes in at his expense, like when she told him they were going to have to leave together: “Now?” “You can finish your cigarette.” Smoke on <em>that</em>, Javadi.</p> <p></p> <p>And at first it seems that Javadi will be similarly enhanced as a character by this development. We’d already heard that he was more of an opportunist than a fanatic, having transferred his loyalty from the Shah to the Ayatollah when he saw which way the wind was blowing. Saul’s story about Javadi’s betrayal of four of Saul’s informants cemented this opportunism in brutality, but still, Javadi’s a far cry from a true believer like Nazir. His behavior after discovering that Carrie had tricked him – applauding her with an elegant “Brava,” nervously smoking his cigarette, asking about how long she and Saul had been working on this with something approaching awe, calling Saul by his first name to begin with – further conveyed the idea that, his bosses and his methods aside, this guy isn’t a world away from the CIA. Certainly he’s got more in common with a guy like <strong>Dar Adal</strong>, who at that very moment was busy switching his own allegiance from Saul to <strong>Senator Lockhart</strong>, than he does with the devout Nazir.</p> <p></p> <p> But Javadi’s subsequent suburban killing spree undoes a lot of that hard work. Not because it’s implausible, which is frequently the main problem with the actions of <em>Homeland</em>‘s villain characters – it’s not that hard to believe that in nearly 35 years, a high-ranking Iranian intelligence official could have tracked down his defector ex-wife. Nor simply because it was brutal – <em>Homeland</em>‘s renewed commitment this season to depicting violence as horrifying, from the mosque massacre in Caracas to this repulsive outburst of domestic violence, is welcome in a genre that could easily devolve into dubiously bloodless shoot-’em-ups.</p> <p></p> <p>No, the problem with Javadi’s murder of his wife and daughter-in-law is that it makes him a mere monster. As both a glib political opportunist and a gleeful killer of women whose only crime was not wanting to have anything to do with him, how is Javadi ever going to get anyone in the audience to see his side of things in the slightest? Even Nazir had the genuine trauma of the loss of his son and the simple beauty and peace of his religious faith (the prayer-based aspects of it, of course, not the bomb-based ones) going for him. The idea seems rather to be that it’s Saul, Carrie, <strong>Quinn</strong> et al who are made more complex and conflicted by their involvement with a guy like this, by their cover-up of his crimes, but not including the man himself in that complexity is a wasted opportunity. It’s also a politically dubious move: <em>Homeland</em>‘s done little to erase the impression that it takes the same dim view of Iran, and the same paranoiac assessment of its hostile intent and capabilities to make good on it, as your average Cheney.</p> <p></p> <p>It’s a shame, in part because <em>Homeland</em> could really use an unimpeachable storyline right about now. I don’t care how funny the image a drawer full of positive pregnancy tests was – and it was pretty freaking funny – but giving Carrie a pregnancy plot to handle on top of everything else was this show at its soapiest, and most baffling. (Though I guess it explains how she remembered the address of her red-headed one-night-stand: She’d have to find out where to collect child support.) And the Dana material is as inert as ever: The well-meaning religious busybody at the government office who intrusively asks to pray for her and her family was a fine little detail, but not enough to make this Lifetime-movie storyline worth the screentime. So it's great to have this 1963 book by Hubert de Cronin Hastings, under the pseudonym Ivor de Wolfe (with photos by Ivy de Wolfe, in actuality Hastings's wife Hazel), which was reprinted by Artifice on its 50th anniversary. Nevertheless, Hubert's views of Italy are highly nuanced and personal, hardly resembling coffee table books with postcard photos. He wanted us to learn from the country's appealing urban conurbations as Modernism was transforming cities around the world, and to a certain degree it works through the photos and the sometimes quirky text (he starts the book by talking about bacon). <br /><br />2: <a href="http://www.phaidon.com/store/architecture/sigurd-lewerentz-9781780750033/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Sigurd Lewerentz</span></a> edited by Nicola Flora, Paolo Giardiello and Gennaro Postiglione | Phaidon | 2013 | <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/178075003X/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=178075003X&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Amazon</a><br />Woodland Cemetery (aka <a href="http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/558">Skogskyrkogården</a>) in Stockholm is the most well-known project by Sweden's Sigurd Lewerentz (carried out with Gunnar Asplund starting in 1915), but a quick glance at the 150+ projects listed in the table of contents to this sizable monograph indicates this was one of many cemeteries or crematoriums that he designed. To somebody in the 21st century this may seem like typecasting or specialization, but as Colin St. John Wilson describes it in his introductory essay to this book originally published in 2002 by Electa (reprinted by Pall Mall and Phaidon this year): "Lewerentz did not flinch at the tragic sense...he fused the simple elements of construction into metaphors of brooding mystery." That mystery comes across in the many photos included in this book, but it is the architect's drawings that really come to the fore, making this a historical appreciation rather than a visual (eye candy) one. Nevertheless, this book is a must-have for anybody with an interest in an architect who deserves much more appreciation and attention.<br /><br />3: <a href="http://www.merrellpublishers.com/?9781858945989"><span style="font-style: italic;">New City: Contemporary Architecture in the City of London</span></a> by Alec Forshaw | Merrell Publishers | 2013 | <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1858945984/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1858945984&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Amazon</a><br />While thinking of London may have triggered images of St. Paul's Cathedral, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, and other stone edifices, in the 21st century the city is being transformed by tall buildings of glass and steel (with some stone thrown here and there), many of them landmarks like their masonry predecessors. This book surveys the changes to the City of London (not to be confused with Greater London) through twelve geographical chapters, moving from "around St. Paul's" to "the Riverside." Each chapter maps the buildings (335 in the whole book) like a guidebook, but Forshaw opts for continuous text that meanders through each area like a walking tour, rather than breaking out each building into a separate entry. Actually many buildings would not merit inclusion if the book were a guide, even as each partakes in the city's 21st-century transformation. While I couldn't help from buying the miniature version of the "Common Ground" catalog (the big one was too big and costly to justify), in the year since I've gained three books produced from different exhibitions and pavilions at the Biennale. In addition to <a href="http://archidose.org/wp/2013/07/16/the-images-of-architects/"><i>The Images of Architects</i></a> and <i>Wunderkammer</i> (both part of the Arsenale exhibition) there is this book from the Israeli pavilion. While the other two books focus on the visual and tactile, respectively, as a source of inspiration for architects, <i>aircraftcarrier</i> is an overtly political affair, examining how global capitalism affected Israeli architecture. While the tongue-in-cheek tchotchkes (such as the peace-treaty bobble heads) don't have a strong a presence here as in the exhibition, the book is elegantly designed, making it a beautiful memento of a fairly serious show.<br /><br />5: <a href="http://www.lars-mueller-publishers.com/en/kenzo-tange-architecture-of-world"><span style="font-style: italic;">Kenzo Tange: Architecture for the World</span></a> edited by Seng Kuan and Yukio Lippit | Lars Müller Publishers | 2012 | <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/3037783109/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=3037783109&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Amazon</a><br />In 2009 Harvard GSD presented a comprehensive exhibition on Kenzo Tange, <a href="http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/#/projects/utopia-across-scales-kenzo-tange-archive.html"><i>Utopia Across Scales: Highlights from the Kenzo Tange Archive</i></a>, which celebrated the 25th anniversary of the eponymous visiting professorship and included a conference. The latter helped to generate the essays in this handsome volume (with embossed cover and smooth, semi-gloss paper) that arrived when much scholarship on Tange was being produced, such as <a href="http://archidose.org/wp/2012/04/09/project-japan/"><i>Project Japan</i></a> and other books focused on his Metabolism influence. Photo/drawing portfolios are fitted between the essays, highlighting a few of Tange's most important buildings.<br /><br />6: <a href="http://islandpress.org/ip/books/book/distributed/I/bo9347533.html"><span style="font-style: italic;">In Search of the Public: Notes on the Contemporary American City</span></a> by Mario Gandelsonas, Rafi Segal, Els Verbakel  | Island Press | 2013 | <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0988666308/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0988666308&linkCode=as2&tag=aweeklydoseof-20">Amazon</a><br />This book also arose from an academic conference, but in this case it took more than five years to translate <i>In Search of the Public</i> from a two-day conference at Princeton University in October 2005 into a publication. These seven years saw a shift from the Bush to Obama administrations, but more dramatically the Arab Spring and Occupy movements challenged notions of the "public" through their actions a couple years ago. The conference proceedings, as documented in this slim volume, precede these important events, but the texts still find relevance as questions of public space continue unabated.

style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">Today’s parish visit to Trinity, Reno was heartwarming and fun. I wanted to say it was the best parish visit since . . .. (some time way back there) but when I tried to calculate that, I saw it was the best Sunday parish visit since last Sunday at St. Jude’s, which was also just wonderful. It would not be possible to say which visit was more full of grace. The truth is: I love visiting our parishes. And the joy of today’s visit was set up by yesterday installing Fr. Dick Snyder at Coventry Cross, Minden and attending a well-planned, well-executed creative contemplative All Souls Eucharist at St. Peter’s, Carson City last night.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">At, 7:45, we had a good traditional Rite I Prayer I Eucharist. I forgot the Prayer of Humble Access again. But I really like the manual acts for Rite I Prayer I. Then we had the Children’s Eucharist. Trinity does the bar none best Children’s Eucharist I’ve ever seen. Rev. Kathy and Rev. Stefani created it a few years ago. Rev. Liz has now picked up the torch and is doing a great job with the able support of Rev. Rick.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">After that we had a short, fast-talking, but highly productive meeting of the Profile Committee as we advanced the ball on the search process. Trinity does a solid search. They did it last time and they’re doing it again.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">We were scheduled for Confirmations at the Principal Service but it turned out there was also a little boy who was there to be baptized. I gather the family had not been on top of the communications side of the event. So the church wasn’t expecting it, but the altar guild swung into action, Fr. John was flexible, and we made it happen.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">One snag. I hate it when I tear up during my own sermons. At least it wasn’t during my own words. It happened when I was quoting Czeslaw Milosz and Ted Kooser. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">Then we had the Parish Forum Q&A. I probably over answered all the questions but the questions were so good I couldn’t help it. I then had a short meeting with Fr. John and Fr. Rick about our hope to form a Lutheran/ Episcopal partnership for a statewide public policy network. Looks promising.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">I the course of the day, I received gifts such as protein bars from a member concerned for my health because I look tired and a vinyl album of Alice’s Restaurant.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">I packed the car and strolled through the park toward Java Jungle. As I was crossing the bridge a homeless guy called, “Bishop? Hey Bishop, is that you?” I stopped. We hugged and he told me about how his life has been since we’d met at Trinity on a previous visit. Urban ministry. Our conversation meant a lot to both of us. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.0pt;">Now here I am at Java Jungle about to catch up on e-mail. We were friends for ten years until…until we decided no longer wanted to be just friends. :) I strongly recommend that best friends fall in love. Good times will be had by all.<br /><br />Nevertheless, falling in love with my best friend did not prevent me from having certain fears and anxieties about getting married. The nearer Kim and I approached the decision to marry, the more I was filled with a paralyzing fear. Was I ready? Was I making the right choice? Was Kim the right person to marry? Would she make me happy?<br /><br />Then, one fateful night, I shared these thoughts and concerns with my dad.<br /><br />Perhaps each of us have moments in our lives when it feels like time slows down or the air becomes still and everything around us seems to draw in, marking that moment as one we will never forget.<br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br />My dad giving his response to my concerns was such a moment for me. With a knowing smile he said, “Seth, you’re being totally selfish. So I’m going to make this really simple: marriage isn’t for you. You don’t marry to make yourself happy, you marry to make someone else happy. More than that, your marriage isn’t for yourself, you’re marrying for a family. Not just for the in-laws and all of that nonsense, but for your future children. Who do you want to help you raise them? Who do you want to influence them? Marriage isn’t for you. It’s not about you. Marriage is about the person you married.”<br /><br />It was in that very moment that I knew that Kim was the right person to marry. I realized that I wanted to make her happy; to see her smile every day, to make her laugh every day. I wanted to be a part of her family, and my family wanted her to be a part of ours. And thinking back on all the times I had seen her play with my nieces, I knew that she was the one with whom I wanted to build our own family.<br /><br />My father’s advice was both shocking and revelatory. It went against the grain of today’s “Walmart philosophy”, which is if it doesn’t make you happy, you can take it back and get a new one.<br /><br />No, a true marriage (and true love) is never about you. It’s about the person you love—their wants, their needs, their hopes, and their dreams. Selfishness demands, “What’s in it for me?”, while Love asks, “What can I give?”<br /><br />Some time ago, my wife showed me what it means to love selflessly. For many months, my heart had been hardening with a mixture of fear and resentment. Then, after the pressure had built up to where neither of us could stand it, emotions erupted. I was callous. I was selfish.<br /><br />But instead of matching my selfishness, Kim did something beyond wonderful—she showed an outpouring of love. Laying aside all of the pain and aguish I had caused her, she lovingly took me in her arms and soothed my soul.<br /><a href="http://sethadamsmith.com/2013/11/02/marriage-isnt-for-you/skwedding394/#main"><img height="426" src="http://sethadamsmith.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/skwedding394.jpg?w=318&h=212" width="640" /></a><br /><br />Marriage is about family.<br /><br />I realized that I had forgotten my dad’s advice. While Kim’s side of the marriage had been to love me, my side of the marriage had become all about me. This awful realization brought me to tears, and I promised my wife that I would try to be better.<br /><br />To all who are reading this article—married, almost married, single, or even the sworn bachelor or bachelorette—I want you to know that marriage isn’t for you. No true relationship of love is for you. Love is about the person you love.<br /><br />And, paradoxically, the more you truly love that person, the more love you receive. And not just from your significant other, but from their friends and their family and thousands of others you never would have met had your love remained self-centered.<br /><br />Truly, love and marriage isn’t for you.
