A Walking Dead Spinoff? Count Me In

<div class="MsoNormal">I know what you’re thinking:  another zombie show would be too many.  AMC’s “The Walking Dead” is <a href="http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/arts-culture/blogs/new-details-on-the-walking-dead-spinoff">getting ready to spinoff </a>a companion to the massively successful series.  While not unheard of in the television landscape (CSI or NCIS anyone?), for every “Angel” to every “Buffy” there seems to be a “The Michael Richards Show” for every “Seinfeld.”<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">However, “The Walking Dead” is clearly at the top of the television landscape.  According to Variety, it is drawing more than <a href="http://variety.com/2013/tv/news/walking-dead-tops-sundays-big-sports-action-in-young-adults-demo-1200771799/">12-million viewers</a> each week and is actually getting more folks to tune in than the World Series and Sunday Night Football.  Those are pretty serious statistics, which only means the show is really hitting its stride.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">While “The Walking Dead” spinoff will not feature the cast or characters of the current show, it will likely <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/walking-dead-spinoff-ideas-cast-650159">expand on the currentmythology</a> of the show.  Just think:  new locations, new people, and who knows what else.  Basically, a lot of questions viewers already have can be addressed in a companion series.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">AMC gets more money, Robert Kirkman <a href="http://voices.yahoo.com/spinoff-walking-dead-will-enhance-mythology-12385651.html?cat=2">can tell more stories</a>, and with any luck fans get more entertainment.  There is always the chance of overexposure, and eventually oversaturation will probably be a problem.  Does anyone remember how popular vampires were a few years ago?<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">With any luck “The Walking Dead” spinoff will be well done, and there is no reason to think that it won’t, which means that fans across the world can be treated to even more of the world Kirkman is creating (as depressing as it is).  <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><br /><div class="MsoNormal">As with anything that has success, capitalizing on that popularity is important; however, maintaining the balance between overexposure and being popular is not an easy task.  Therefore, right now, cautious optimism seems to be the right move.  That is, at least until exactly what the new series is about is revealed.  Then it could be time for celebration or the opposite.<o:p></o:p></div>

Halloween? Not a Fan ...

As usual I will be turning off the porch light and covering the windows with blackout curtains and will refuse to answer the door when the little bastards knock anyway. Thursday morning I will inspect my car hoping that no one messed with. That’s basically my Halloween routine. Maybe even a Family Size bag of Doritos. They would be offering to mow my lawn or shovel snow off my driveway for free just because they thought I was cool. I could see those people trying to compete with my family size bag of Doritos by giving kids a regular sized bag of Veggie Chips or worse … VEGAN CHIPS! AHHHHHHH!!! Freaks. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Honestly though, I’ve just never had any really good Halloween experiences. Way back when I was in grade school we used to have Halloween carnivals each year. As usual I never really won anything cool. We played games like musical chairs and had a cake walk and I don’t know what all else. I’m sure I won some cookies and I think I did when a big piece of cake once, but it turned out to be coconut. YUCK! <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">In high school I was on the newspaper staff and we teamed up with the nerds on the yearbook staff to have a Halloween party. I put on a suit and a Ronald Reagan mask as my costume. He was pretty much the scariest person or thing I could think of. Okay, maybe I was the nerd. Whatever. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Anyway, they set up a haunted house in the study hall room that we had to go through. It wasn’t all that scary but it was really dark and I couldn’t find the door to the library where the party was supposed to be. The vampires and zombies were breathing down my neck and I’m pretty sure one of the groped me in the crotch area. Aaaaaand, I think it was a dude who did it. A teacher actually. I’ll discuss that with my therapist though. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">We did have a Halloween party one year when I was in college. It was a strange night. Only a few people showed up at first, but then a bunch of people all came at the same time. Then it died out and BOOM a bunch of people showed up late night. Of course my roommate and his girlfriend took advantage of having an audience and had a big fight. Ag Secretary Matt Lohr heading to Farm Credit of the Virginias

Virginia's Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services <a href="http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/about/commissioner.shtml">Matt Lohr</a> of Rockingham County, who was appointed by Governor Bob McDonnell in 2010, announced today that he <a href="http://augustafreepress.com/matt-lohr-leaving-state-post-farm-credit-virginias/">would be leaving the administration</a> in December to take a job with Farm Credit of the Virginias.<br /><br />Lohr, 42, who served in the House of Delegates for the 26th House District from 2005 until his appointment as Ag Secretary, operates a 250-acre farm in the Shenandoah Valley. On Tuesday, he announced the career change on Facebook:<br /><blockquote>Serving as Virginia’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services these past four years has truly been one of the greatest honors of my life. After much prayerful consideration, I announced today that I will be stepping down in December as Governor Bob McDonnell’s administration draws to a close. I am very excited to be joining the good folks at Farm Credit of the Virginias as director of the Farm Credit Knowledge Center. Here I will have the opportunity to build relationships and serve as a resource for all types of farmers. Reference Services Internship Program - West Hartford Public Library

<strong>Reference Services Internship Program - </strong><strong><strong><span style="color: #48286d;">West Hartford Public Library</span></strong></strong> welcomes applications from MLS candidates for its internship program. The program has been designed to provide practical, on-the-job experience to individuals pursuing a career in reference service. Applicants must have completed at least four graduate level library science courses before the start date of their internship including a reference services course. The successful applicant will be paid a stipend of $4375 for 250 hours of work over approximately 5 months starting in January. The intern will have the opportunity to shadow librarians at a fast-paced reference desk and will assist with the implementation of a special project focusing on Collection Management Technology. In addition, the intern will help with other departmental projects such as collection and website development, digitization projects, subject bibliographies, and other projects as assigned. Although the intern will work primarily in the Adult Division of the Noah Webster Library located at 20 South Main Street, s/he will do a rotation in each of the library’s two branches as well as other library divisions to gain a broader understanding of public library operations. This internship program is funded through the generous support of the West Hartford Public Library Foundation’s Thomas F. Kilfoil Fund. style="font-size: small;"><b><span style="line-height: 115%;">            The Rim Country Optimist Club is extending an invitation to attend the  Falling Leaves Fashioneesta. This is a cooperative effort between the Optimist Club, Payson Assisting Displaced Students (P.A.D.S.), local Girl Scout Troop and the individual and business sponsors who are  supporting  the event.  Most of the proceeds will be given to PADS, which helps to provide food, clothing, shoes, transportation to tutorial classes, to the doctor and paying for their medical needs, etc. A smaller portion will be used to buy items of clothing to include in Christmas boxes for youth in need.</span></b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><span style="line-height: 115%;">            The only way to describe the Falling Leaves Fashioneesta extravaganza is “elegant!” From beginning to end your senses will be delighted. A tasteful luncheon will please your pallet and it will be served by local Girl Scouts. The table decorations will be unique and lovely with some becoming door prizes.</span></b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><span style="line-height: 115%;">            Both the Boutique and Bob’s Western Wear will be displaying the latest fashions. The models will range in age from high school through senior citizen. The male models, which are the newest addition to this event, will add to the charm and fun of the day.</span></b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><span style="line-height: 115%;">            Music will be provided by Fred Carpenter. There will be a multitude of exciting individual raffled items and silent auction baskets for one and all to try and obtain.</span></b></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><span style="line-height: 115%;">            The Fashioneesta will take place Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Payson Senior Center (512 W Main Street).
