Although the economy may have turned around by the time you graduate, nothing is certain. You'll want to declare a major in something that you not only enjoy and that interests you, but also in something that will be come in handy when looking for a job.<br /><br />While it's tempting to choose a broad major like engineering, English or communications, it behooves you to get creative; an uncommon degree could put you in a great position to find a job in an emerging, unique or specialized field.<br /><br />Here are 10 uncommon (or overlooked) majors and the jobs you can get with them*:<br /><br />1. Family and consumer sciences<br />A background in family and consumer sciences – also known as home economics -- teaches students everything they need to know about what makes a "home." You'll become an expert in such areas as child development, family relations, consumer economics, personal finance, fashion design, housing and nutrition, which means you'll have plenty of options when it comes to starting your career.<br />Related careers: Teacher, health educator, financial adviser, education administrator<br /><br />2. Linguistics<br />Linguistics majors study language -- its structure, how it's acquired, how people use it, its history, etc. As globalization continues as a trend in business, those with a linguistics background will become more valued in several fields.<br />Related careers: Anthropologists, archaeologists, computer scientists, interpreters, linguists, speech-language pathologists and audiologists, translators, marketers<br /><br />3. Recreation management<br />Students who major in recreation management learn how to manage employees, plan and promote activities, create budgets and follow safety regulations when running recreational facilities. Most recreation management graduates work in parks, resorts, sporting facilities, camps, senior centers, theme parks and community facilities.<br />Related careers: Amusement and recreation attendants; lifeguards, ski patrol and other recreational protective services; recreation workers; coaches and umpires; park rangers<br /><br />4. Food science<br />Food science majors study the biology and chemistry behind food. Packaging<br />If you're interested in a green career, this might be a good path to follow. Criminology<br />Are you able to solve the case during every episode of "Law & Order"? Then majoring in criminology might be for you. Social work<br />Social work majors are usually people who want to help make the world and its inhabitants better. Green jobs<br />The environmental wave, in addition to President Barack Obama's promise to create 5 million green jobs, is creating jobs in everything from sales to government to nonprofit organizations. You've sent a basic cover letter with every application. Why isn't anything happening?<br /><br />While simply submitting your application materials and waiting for an opportunity to fall in your lap might have been enough to land a job at one point in time, the frustrating reality of today's job market makes that type of job search impossible. Instead, today's job seekers must go above and beyond if they want to stand a chance at landing a great opportunity.<br /><br />Competing for work is a process that requires full engagement but generates significant momentum, says Jim Villwock, author of "Whacked Again! Secrets to Getting Back on the Executive Saddle." But, many job seekers get distracted in their searches and get frustrated when they don't see results right away.<br /><br />"Initially, it is overconfidence that the process will be easy and [that] time should be carved out for family, sports and other activities that were neglected when working. The opposite is true. Getting a job is usually more work than being employed," Villwock says. "The core mistake is not procrastination, not working on a résumé or not going to a networking meeting. It is not knowing the process and working the plan to get the job that you deserve."<br /><br />Here are 10 reasons your job search might not be succeeding:<br /><br />1. You aren't networking<br /><br />No one can help you find a job if you they don't know you need it. Your friends, family and previous employers all know someone who knows someone, so utilize their knowledge and connections as you look for work.<br /><br />Additionally, make yourself (and your job search) visible on social and professional networking sites like BrightFuse, Facebook or LinkedIn. According to a survey by Robert Half International, 62 percent of executives think professional networking sites will be useful while searching for candidates in the next few years. Thirty-five percent of respondents said they would use social networking sites as a recruitment resource.<br /><br />2. You're skipping the cover letter online<br /><br />For some reason, people can't get used to the idea of how to submit a cover letter online, so they just skip the step altogether. Wrong move, people. Your cover letter is your chance to make a good first impression or address any inconsistencies on your résumé. When sending your application via e-mail, your cover letter serves as the body of the e-mail and your résumé is attached.<br /><br />3. Your cover letter is generic<br /><br />Now that we know you have to send a cover letter, the next step is making sure that it's not generic. You need to tailor each letter to a specific job and person, while clearly identifying the aspects of your background that meet the employer's needs, says Ane Powers, managing partner at The White Hawk Group, a career management firm.<br /><br />"Your cover letter is your ticket to the interview. The ticket is voided and placed in the 'thanks, but no thanks' pile if it doesn't scream 'I am a perfect fit for this position,'" she says.<br /><br />4. You're procrastinating<br /><br />Oftentimes, when we don't see the results we want, we get frustrated and worried. After applying to so many jobs without hearing anything, you just don't have the energy to update your résumé, write a targeted cover letter or follow up with a hiring manager, so you put it off until tomorrow, then the next day and the next day. But why put off tomorrow what can be done today? Your dream job is not going to fall from the sky, so continue to endure and be proactive in your search.<br /><br />5. You're only searching for jobs on the Internet<br /><br />While job boards and company Web sites are a great starting place to find a job, the majority of open positions are never advertised, Powers says. Communicate with people who can help you: human resource managers, recruiters and successful professionals will all be key in discovering new opportunities.<br /><br />6. You're not doing your research<br /><br />This might be the most basic piece of job advice out there, yet some people still choose not to follow it. Executives polled by RHI said 25 percent of candidates didn't have any knowledge of the company or industry to which they're applying.<br /><br />Things change every day in business, especially in today's market. It's important to know of any changes going on at the company where you're applying. If you are applying for work in a new industry, do some research to prove that you can be a valuable addition to that field.<br /><br />7. You're blanketing the market with your résumé<br /><br />"Attractive candidates demonstrate strategic marketing. Blanketing the market with your résumé demonstrates desperation and lack of strategic thinking," Powers says. Don't send résumés to every single job opening out there. Identify the organizations that meet your requirements and go from there.<br /><br />8. You're not following up<br /><br />Too many job seekers assume that if they haven't heard back from an employer, it's because they've been shot down for the position. While that may be true, there is also every possibility that your résumé never made it to its final destination or it got lost in the flood of submissions. Eighty-two percent of executives say candidates should contact hiring managers via e-mail, phone or personalized letter within two weeks of submitting their résumés, according to RHI. Just contact the hiring manager to say that you wanted to confirm your application was received and ask if there is anything else they need from you.<br /><br />9. You have too many distractions<br /><br />Try to focus on only your job search for a couple hours each day -- don't check your personal e-mail, make phone calls or surf the Internet (unless it's for jobs).<br /><br />"Conducting a job campaign is a full-time job. As with any job, to achieve results, one needs to set goals and develop an action plan to achieve the goals," Powers says.<br /><br />10. You don't ask for the job<br /><br />Many candidates are shy about being to outspoken or upfront about their desire for the job, but many hiring managers will be impressed with your candor.<br /><br />"Employers are looking for candidates who are excited about the position," Powers says. TRANSFORMATION THOUGH STUDY AND PRACTICE

Romans 12: 2 "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds."<br /> <br /> Our family has been negotiating a lot of change the past couple of years. Moving from the Georgia rainforest to the Mojave Desert was the first shift. Being bishop of a diocese is a world apart from parish priesthood. Linda has gone from a well-settled position directing the legal writing program at Mercer School of Law to teaching Property and Wills, Trusts, and Estates at UNLV. Daughter Emilie changed her life roles from daughter and student to mother and social worker. Daughter Katie went from Georgia student/barista to California army wife. Our heads are still spinning.<br /><br /> It isn’t easy – but I’ll tell you what it is: It’s life! And it’s all exciting! Life moves. It shifts, changes, adapts. In one of my favorite novels, Zorba the Greek, a young accountant responds to the plans of the volatile old miner, Zorba, “But isn’t that a lot of trouble?” Zorba replies, “Trouble? Life is trouble. Only in death is there no trouble.” Zorba didn’t shy away from the trouble of life’s adventure. He embraced it in a spirit we Americans don’t even have a word for – but the French do – joi d’vivre roughly “the joy of life” – not just when it goes smoothly, but delight in the whole roller coaster ride of living.<br /><br /> Jesus was about life. “I came that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly.” So Jesus was about change. He turned over a lot of tables and raised a lot of eyebrows. He changed water into wine; sinners into saints, illiterate fishermen into globetrotting evangelists. Paul called that transformation. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds.”<br /><br /> The Christian life is ongoing transformation, growing “from glory to glory” Scripture says -- “growing into the full stature of Christ.” This is the tension for churches. We have two natures. On one hand, churches are human institutions. Human institutions exist to keep things as they are. They institutionalize the status quo. On the other hand, churches are the earthly dwelling of the Holy Spirit – an irresistible hurricane of change. The Spirit moves in each of us to transform our individual lives. The Spirit moves in the Church to change the Church. The Spirit moves through the Church to change the world.<br /><br /> Our diocesan mission statement says God calls us “to transform our communities.” But are we doing that? I say this in all gentleness and love. I am not sure we are changing the communities around us. I am not sure we are even keeping up with them. The world is vastly different than it was 10 years ago. We are decidedly living in a new century. Is the Church an agent of change today? Or are we racing to catch up? Or are we straggling behind, on our way to becoming a footnote in the history of the 20th Century?<br /><br /> This metaphor that may be silly but it is apt. The children’s action heroes The Transformers are “transformers” in two ways. They change their own shape in order to change the situation. They change into the shape required to confront violence and injustice. Just so, the Church can be an agent of transformation in the world only if we are willing to be transformed ourselves. "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds." When Bishop Wes radically revamped our diocese almost 40 years ago, he was setting something in motion, not setting something in concrete.<br /><br /> Compared to some other dioceses we are doing pretty well. I am grateful for all our success. But God does not call us to “do pretty well.” God calls us to work miracles.” If “the power of God working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine,” I wonder if we are allowing God to do all that God wants in us. If we were, we’d see more young adults finding God with us, we’d be sending more mosquito nets to Tanzania, and we would be graduating more than 44% of Nevada’s children from high school.<br /><br /> God calls us to be transformed again so that we can be God’s change agents in Nevada today. What does that transformation look like? I honestly don’t know. All I know is that if we want to follow Christ in this new century, to carry the Gospel into this new century, to be God’s change agents – God’s transformers -- in Nevada, we have to prayerfully rethink everything. We are not here to enshrine memories. We are here to connect people to Jesus by any means necessary.<br /><br /> I am reading a remarkable series of books collectively called Transformations: The Church of the 21st Century. Individual titles:<br /><br /> Transforming Congregations<br /> Transforming Disciple<br /> Transforming Stewardship<br /> Transforming Evangelism<br /> Transforming Vocations <br /><br />These books, available from Church Publishing Co., offer ways to rethink how to be Church today. All our leaders -- lay and clergy -- would do well to read, mark, and inwardly digest this series. We would do well to meet and discuss them. They are not the answer, but they could spark us to discover our own creative action for the gospel.<br /><br /> Two articles in the upcoming Desert Spirit offer important possibilities for congregational renewal. The first is lifelong Christian formation. General Convention just endorsed the Charter for Lifelong Christian Formation. We do not send soldiers into battle without training or untrained firefighters into a fire. We cannot continue sending Christians into the world without training. Nevada Episcopalians need to know more Scripture, more theology, more church history, and more about our liturgy if they are going to share the faith in a secular society. Our congregations will soon have the opportunity to become learning communities, equipping all our members for daily life and Christian mission.<br /><br /> The other opportunity for change is in our Christian practice. We already do good community ministry, mostly for the homeless and the imprisoned. Today we have a new opportunity to serve children at risk in our communities. This is the most powerfully transformative kind of service we can do. And it is the kind of service that has the most power to transform us. When Louise Helton of Communities in Schools addressed our deacons this summer, there was not a dry eye in the room. We felt the call of Christ to share his love with Nevada’s children, just to give them a chance in life. We felt the power of this ministry to humanize our own lives.<br /> <br /> I mention these two new opportunities together because transformation happens by walking forward – left, right, left right. It has a certain yin/yang balance of learning and doing, theoria and praxis, inreach and outreach, renewal and apostolate. It takes both, in balance, for healthy growth.<br /><br /> I cannot imagine all the new songs God will invite us to sing. I cannot imagine all the new things God will do for us, with us, and through us. But I know this much about God’s plan for us: It is life, abundant life.

Choose wisely<br />Just as you would adjust your cover letter and résumé for each position for which you apply, it's also a good idea to customize your list of contacts. Consider which of your references can best discuss the traits and qualities you possess that directly relate to the job. Such individuals won't necessarily possess the most impressive job titles. If you're applying for a management position, for example, it's helpful to provide contact information for a previous supervisor and someone you managed.<br /><br />3. Remember, it's a small world<br />Some employers may go the extra mile to learn more about you, and social media sites can make such detective work easier than in the past. You should not only avoid burning bridges with former colleagues but also be selective about who's in your online network since a hiring manager could contact these individuals. Because of this reason, you may consider relying on different services for your personal and professional networks. For instance, you might use LinkedIn for business purposes and Facebook for personal ones.<br /><br />4. Go the extra mile<br />Make it easy for an employer to speak to your references by providing clear contact information for each individual, including the person's name, phone number and e-mail address. You might even note the best time of day to reach him or her.<br /><br />5. Tell the truth<br />One of the executives surveyed by our company spoke to a reference who said the job candidate didn't do the work he claimed to do during the interview. Another reference told an executive that the applicant didn't work for a firm she listed in her employment history. Hiring managers are bound to find out if you stretched the truth during the hiring process, so resist any temptation to be less than honest about your experience -- and make sure your references are forthright, too.<br /><br />6. Say thanks<br />Even if a reference doesn't end up speaking to a hiring manager on your behalf, thank that person and keep him or her updated on the status of your search. In fact, no thank-you note may translate into "no, thank you" from an employer that was considering hiring you.<br /><br />A thank-you note is a chance for you to make a lasting, positive impression on a hiring manager who may have interviewed dozens of candidates. Nearly nine out of 10 executives polled by Robert Half International said sending a brief letter after an interview can boost a job seeker's chances of landing the position.<br /><br />Here are some tips for writing a winning thank-you note:<br /><br />Keep it formal. After an interview, some job seekers use their cell phones or PDAs to send off a quick thank-you note to the hiring manager -- in "text speak." But hiring managers won't be impressed by "thx 4 ur time." Just as you wouldn't wear shorts and flip-flops to an interview, avoid such informal language, which could come off as unprofessional. Also, saying thanks so quickly after the interview makes it seem like you haven't given the meeting proper thought -- that you're sending the note as routine, not because you truly appreciate the opportunity. A better tactic is to send an e-mail message to thank the interviewer within 24 hours of the interview. Then, follow up with a letter sent through the regular mail.<br /><br />Be specific. In your note, bring up points from the conversation you had with the hiring manager. For example, if a prospective employer stressed that the open position calls for knowledge of a particular software program, use the thank-you letter as an opportunity to remind the person that you've worked with the application on a range of projects.<br /><br /><br /><br />Repeat yourself. While a lot of what you include in your thank-you note may seem repetitive, remember that a hiring manager who has interviewed a dozen candidates may not remember all the specifics about your skills and experience. Just like an advertising campaign for a consumer product, a certain amount of repetition is necessary to distinguish yourself from the competition.<br /><br />Make it personal. If you discovered the hiring manager shares your passion for travel or mystery books, referring to this commonality could make your letter even more effective. Personalizing the note will remind him or her who you are and that you paid close attention during the interview.<br /><br />Allay concerns. A thank-note is your chance to address any concerns the hiring manger expressed, especially if you were unable to do so in the interview. Perhaps the interviewer was worried about your lack of industry experience, and during the interview you forgot to mention a temporary position you had in the sector. You can bring it up in your note, along with a few points about how that experience contributed to your knowledge or interest in the field.<br /><br />Don't stop at one. If you interviewed with more than one hiring manager, send a thank-you note to each person. Address every letter to a specific individual, even if you have to do some research to uncover the spelling of someone's name or locate his or her contact information. Also make sure the content of each letter differs; hiring managers often compare notes -- literally.<br /><br />Add an extra. Perhaps during the interview you mentioned an article you recently read that's relevant to the firm's business. Send it with your note, along with a brief explanation of why you thought your contact would be interested in the information. Indeed, whether it's a news article or a link to an interesting Web site, you'll make yourself more memorable by demonstrating that you've gone beyond the basics.<br /><br />Finally, keep in mind that sending a well-written thank-you note at other points in your job search can be advantageous. This communication shouldn't be limited solely to the employment interview. It's also worth sending a short letter of thanks to a contact who clued you in to a job lead, a former colleague who served as a reference or a manager who accepted your request for an informational interview. On the job hunt, the little things count. If students have low GPAs, their career prospects will suffer and universities will look like an institution of underperformers, critics charge.<br /><br />Still, wouldn't churning out class after class of honor students result in a pool of professionals with impressive credentials but little actual merit? You'd think so.<br /><br />Whether or not that's actually happening on campuses across the country is hard to say, but a variation seems to occur in workplaces.<br /><br />"Many job seekers don't realize how much title inflation there is at some companies, and how much title definition variance there is in the marketplace," says John Nicholson, CEO of Résumés That Jump, a résumé writing service. At his previous company, marketing coordinators had major responsibilities, such as managing multimillion-dollar budgets and working on high-profile partnerships..<br /><br />He knows that at similar companies, they could have had fluffier job titles, like "senior marketing manager," but they'd also have fewer responsibilities.<br /><br />"When it comes to résumés and job interviews, titles are a lot less important than what you've accomplished and what you can bring to an employer," Nicholson says.<br /><br />Of course, that's all well and good to say, but won't your ego take a hit if you have many responsibilities and an unassuming title -- especially when you walk into an interview? Just decide what you want and act accordingly, says Ann Latham, author of "Clear Thoughts -- Pragmatic Gems of Better Business Thinking."<br /><br />"If you are looking for an identity, job titles are paramount," Latham says. "In that case, I recommend a small company where you can get a big title sooner. Or try [a company] where almost everyone is a VP."<br /><br />Take a different tack if you want something more substantial.<br /><br />"But if you are looking for a position that will provide [a] challenge, satisfaction and growth opportunities, job titles are meaningless," Latham says. "It is the responsibilities and the opportunities that count. These are what will drive your day-to-day activities and your learning."<br /><br />Employers aren't dumb<br />Job seekers often forget one of the most important details of a job search: Employers have been where you are, and they helped make you what you are. In other words, employers are aware of inflated job titles, too. They are the ones who created the titles, after all. Therefore, on your job search, approach listings with the same skepticism as employers.<br /><br />Keep this in mind<br />Laurent Duperval, president of Duperval Consulting, suggests the following tips for focusing on job descriptions and not job titles:<br /><br />· Titles are often more fiction than fact<br />"Somebody had to put up a job posting [and] had no idea what to call the position, so they made up a name. The name may not have anything to do with the actual job," Duperval warns.<br /><br />· Egos beget titles<br />"Because people attach so much of their self-esteem to their titles, companies have had to change the names of the same jobs, just to make it seem like a more important position," Duperval says. "Secretary, which used to be a fine title, has been replaced by 'administrative assistant'; a janitor is now a 'sanitation engineer'; and so on. No matter what the name, you still have to file, open mail and type letters, or sweep the floors, clean the toilets and keep the place clean."<br />If you're looking for work that falls under the secretary or administrative assistant label, do you honestly care what the title is? If you have the appropriate experience, the company culture suits you and the compensation is in line with your goals, it would be silly to turn it down.<br /><br />· Titles are not transferable<br />"A title in one company means something completely different in another company," Duperval cautions. "In some companies, everybody and his dog is a director. In other companies, directors have large, multimillion-dollar accounts and are responsible for hundreds of employees. Is There Life after a Layoff? - Real lessons learned from layoff survivors by Rachel Zupek, CareerBuilder.com writer<br /><br />Tom Roberts was laid off in April 2009, six weeks after he told his supervisor that he needed to have brain surgery. Paying the bills with a now-exhausted balance of vacation and sick days, Roberts awaits his disability check to pay the rent. He gave away his car because he couldn't afford the payments. His food supply comes from a food bank. All the while, he suffers from nerve disease that makes it impossible to speak for more than a few minutes at a time.<br /><br />Despite these circumstances, Roberts, 59, says he "couldn't be happier." Until he undergoes brain surgery this summer (which his ex-employer will pay for), he is marketing presentations for his organization, Bipolar Advantage. After that, he plans to return to his roots in broadcasting and public speaking, leading workshops on presentation skills.<br /><br />"It took a few days of reflection to accept that I had gotten a nudge from the universe to pursue my soul purpose," Roberts says. "[I] was settling for low-paying jobs just to pay the bills. I will never go back to corporate America on its terms. I am self-employed, but not making any money yet; I couldn't be happier!"<br /><br />Attitude is everything in this economy and, surprisingly, Roberts isn't the only one in a positive post-layoff state of mind.<br /><br />Blessing in disguise<br />Mark Ellison's layoff in December 2008 coincided with a bad time in his personal life. Family issues kept his unemployment issues at bay for a few months and though times were rough, he is happy that he was able to be there for his family. Finally, he signed up for unemployment, adjusted his budget and took a hard look at where he was in his life.<br /><br />"It has been tough. I am able to handle the basics: mortgage, cable, Internet, electricity and home owner's association fees," Ellison says.<br /><br />After 203 days of unemployment, Ellison gained some perspective. He's learned to appreciate the opportunities he's been given at the young age of 26, learned several lessons along the way and says overall, he's enjoyed his unemployment.<br /><br />"Is it OK to be laid off? Yes. Is it a fun experience? Not really. My social life used to be full of exciting new restaurants, fancy bars and after-work cocktails. Now, an afternoon at the pool or walking my dog to my mailbox is a grand affair," Ellison says. "Being laid off at such a young age was probably something I needed. I am starting my new job on Monday with probably the best attitude I have had in years."<br /><br />Lorena Prime had a similar awakening when she found herself let go from a Fortune-500 company at the end of 2008.<br /><br />"It was a very difficult, emotional time. [I thought,] how will I pay my mortgage? Where will I work next? Do I even want to continue with my career in sales? What will happen to my lifestyle?" she said. "I needed time to clear my head, but even that prospect seemed risky."<br /><br />After a few months of soul-searching, Prime found a common theme in her 20-year career: efficiency, organization and productivity.<br /><br />Prime eventually started her own business, Clearly Organized, helping people streamline their lives and create a peaceful balance between work and home.<br /><br />"I could not have started my own business without going through the pain of the layoff. I had to learn that I am resilient and strong; that I could do something a little uncertain and still make it; that I could extend the boundaries of my comfort zone," Prime says. "My layoff allowed me to pursue what I love and I have not looked back."<br /><br />Making ends meet<br />Not everyone's layoff story has as happy of an ending as Prime and Ellison. For many people, a layoff is more of a curse than a blessing, and the majority of people are just trying to get by.<br /><br />Jessica Lybeck, 25, fits a few categories. After quitting the architecture firm where she worked full time to start her own consulting business, the same company offered her a part-time gig. She accepted, to help pay the bills while she got her business running. While visiting a friend in London, however, she got a call from HR that she was being let go.<br /><br />"I was exhilarated by the challenge and overwhelmed by financial pressure," Lybeck recalls. "The layoff couldn't have come at a better time, as it gave me the motivation to take my new consulting business to a higher level. [But,] I needed a part-time job to pay the bills while I got things started."<br /><br />Eventually, Lybeck found a decent part-time position serving tables at a restaurant. But, she felt it was getting harder to talk to her friends or former colleagues about her situation because they didn't understand. She thought of how great it would be if there was a place to find people in her same position, sharing successful tips and tricks from their job searches.<br /><br />"Me, my computer and a pile of rejections was my daily reality," Lybeck says. "I was desperate to share my mini-victories and defeats with people that could relate to what I was going through."<br /><br />And so, the idea of Layoff Moveon was born. The Web site provides a forum for people to share useful tips and advice, connect with their daily sanity, and give some catharsis and hope to those dealing with unemployment.<br /><br />Some examples of folks who are utilizing Layoff Moveon to this effect:<br /><br />"I feel like I am treading water right now. I am typically a pretty positive person but this has me in a tailspin."<br /><br />"Got a dog to walk? I can do that! Oh yeah, I'm a nurse. Need a band aid got those too! [sic] Been out of work for 6 weeks now with no benefits and no money. Things r [sic] getting really scary. Trying to keep that positive attitude, but it's getting more difficult."<br /><br />"I finally found a new job in February 2009. I was laid off from that job after six weeks. I was tole [sic] I was not a 'good fit.' So here I am again. and very depressed."<br /><br />Clearly, it's frustrating for people to face constant rejection and negativity and Lybeck is glad to provide a place where people can vent, cope and learn from each other. Though the Web site isn't providing much revenue, she is paying the bills through her consulting work and says she is "quite okay with surviving."<br /><br />While she can't imagine far into the future, Lybeck hopes to continue growing her consulting business and turn more of her ideas into profitable realities.<br /><br />"I'll have stability and prosperity someday," Lybeck says. "Sometimes the drastic change my from my 'previous life' leaves me feeling like I'm watching a movie. They're not just being sourpusses about the situation, even if that's what you think. Most bosses who are hesitant to expand their telecommuting policies are afraid of giving employees too much room to mess up. Think about how many business-casual experiments went awry when someone showed up in clothes more suitable for club-going. All you need is one blockhead to ruin it for everyone.<br /><br />Many of these fears, however, are unfounded. At least that's what Kate Lister and Tom Harnish say in their new book, "Undress for Success: The Naked Truth About Making Money at Home."<br /><br />According to Lister and Harnish:<br /><br />· Surveys have shown that telecommuters, or e-workers, are more productive at home than at the office.<br /><br />· Employers worry about not being face-to-face with their staff, but phones, e-mail and chat programs make everyone accessible.<br /><br />· Real estate, administrative and relocation costs are dramatically lessened by telecommuting, so e-workers don't actually cost companies more money. They cost less.<br /><br />Employers are beginning to catch on to the benefits of telecommuting, but many workers don't realize that their jobs can be done as effectively at home. So even if their bosses would be OK with them working remotely, they never think to take advantage of it.<br /><br />"Undress for Success" lists some jobs that are perfect for e-workers. Here are a few professions you should consider if you would rather have a 30-second commute instead of a 30-minute one.<br /><br />1. Medical transcriptionists<br />What they do: When medical professionals dictate their observations of a patient's health or condition, medical transcriptionists transfer their recordings into text. You see their work on lab reports, patient histories and any other documentation that comes as a result of procedures.<br />Who hires them: Insurance companies, health-care institutions, medical transcription service organizations<br /><br />2. Telemedicine personnel<br />What they do: Nurses, pharmacists and other health-care professionals provide advice to patients through phone calls or video conferencing. When patients have health questions but don't need urgent care, they can contact these experts to see what their next course of action should be.<br />Who hires them: Insurance companies; hospitals; doctor's offices<br /><br />3. Remote tech support agent<br />What they do: Computer users who aren't sure why their PC shuts down every time they try to open a file need help, so they call tech support. Believe it or not, not every problem requires in-person help. As long as you have the patience, communication skills and technological knowledge, you can work as a tech support agent from your home.<br />Who hires them: Technology manufacturers; technology support businesses<br /><br />4. Teachers and tutors<br />What they do: As online learning continues to grow, Internet-based instructors have seen an increase in jobs. Some teach online courses that last a full semester, while others offer seminars that take place for only one or a few days.<br /><br />Tutors are a small but growing niche of online educators who offer help with homework or other course work to students. They act as traditional, in-person tutors, except they interact with students primarily through online means.<br />Who hires them: Traditional and online universities; K-12 schools; certification programs; online-based tutoring companies<br /><br />5. Virtual assistant<br />What they do: Virtual assistants are responsible for the same tasks that traditional assistants are: running errands, coordinating meetings, screening calls and handling clerical duties. You've probably seen high-ranking professionals who rely on their assistants just to get through the day. Virtual assistants do the same thing, except they're not in an office.<br />Who hires them: Companies devoted to providing virtual assistants for clients; large companies with a need for flexible assistants. If not, you might be missing out on a valuable boost to your career.<br /><br />Why would you possibly want to blog?<br />In an already crowded blogosphere, why would you want to be just another small fish in a huge pond? Adrienne Waldo thought the same thing before she started her own marketing blog, Ask a Millennial. But once she started to post, she realized people were reading and interested in what she had to say. It helped her freelance career and she believes it can help others, too.<br /><br />"Especially for someone just out of school, a blog is an excellent supplement to a résumé," Waldo says. "It serves as a sort of enhanced writing sample because it allows employers a unique look at your personality in addition to seeing that you can, in fact, write. It also shows that you're tech-savvy and motivated -- both extremely important qualities to have in today's job market."<br /><br />Of course, your blog won't be an asset to you if it lacks direction and attention. Waldo suggests beginning bloggers set goals for themselves.<br /><br />"A blog can be useful for countless reasons, so it's best to decide for yourself what your purpose in starting it is," she recommends. "It's certainly fantastic for both visibility and staying current in today's market, but how you position it is ultimately going to determine how it works for you."<br /><br />A good blog can work for you whether or not you're employed. But a blog written by a job seeker desperately seeking a paycheck will not get you much traction. In fact, blogging is like many other traditional job seeking tools, says Lauren Milligan of ResuMAYDAY, a résumé writing service.<br /><br />"Just like networking, blogging and developing a following should start when you are employed, rather than when you are in panic mode," Milligan cautions.<br /><br />How do you present a blog to employers?<br />New media are proving to be a great tool for job seekers, employees and employers. Facebook, Twitter and blogs are increasingly become common ways to find jobs or recruit candidates. But the rules for social media are still mostly unwritten, and you might not know how to prove you're both technologically proficient and professional. Milligan says you absolutely can do both, it's just all in the presentation.<br /><br />For clients, Milligan often inserts their LinkedIn addresses in the contact section of the résumé. She suggests doing the same with your blog address. Another option she recommends is to include a mention of your blog in your career summary statement. But if neither feels right for you, feel free to bring it up in the interview.<br /><br />"A common interview question is, 'What makes you unique from other candidates?'" Milligan says. "A great -- and unique -- answer would be, 'One thing that may set me apart from your other candidates is my ability to introduce a dedicated and loyal following to your company. For the past eight months, I have authored a blog that has over 2,000 readers on a weekly basis. This blog is dedicated to trends, leaders and advancements in our industry.'"<br /><br />She also recommends pointing out that you have been and will always be respectful of your past employers and that your goal is about making connections. If you can put the emphasis on your growth and how it will benefit the company, while simultaneously proving it's not a place for you to vent about annoying co-workers, you'll make a good impression.<br /><br />"As an employer myself, I assure all job seekers that this would weigh heavily in a candidate's favor," Milligan says.<br /><br />Both Milligan and Waldo stress the importance of knowing your limits. You don't have to be an expert to write a good blog -- and pretending to be one will only turn off readers. Being humble and showing humanity will pay off for you.<br /><br />"Anyone can be a good blogger with the right dedication and motivation," Waldo says. "You absolutely do not have to be an expert, but if you're not, don't pretend to be. That will get you in trouble. I recommend writing about something you love. It doesn't have to be career-related. The change might seem insignificant, but that amount multiplied over 40 hours per week for an entire year would be a welcome boost to anyone's bank account. Now, someone earning minimum wage and working full time will have an annual income of $15,080.<br /><br />Jobs that pay the minimum wage are everywhere, and most of us have held one of these positions at some point in our careers. Both part-time and full-time jobs can pay the minimum wage, and they can be steppingstones toward professional goals or careers in their own rights.<br /><br />Not surprisingly, our culture likes to focus on dollar signs. Look at our entertainment -- "The Hills," "The Real Housewives of [Insert City Here]." We're preoccupied with moving up and on to bigger things, which usually translates into something richer and fancier than we currently have. Perhaps that's why we often overlook the value of minimum-wage jobs. We're quick to forget that minimum-wage jobs are often our first forays into the work force, and they provide paychecks at a time when many people are having difficulty finding employment.<br /><br />Here are some quick facts about the minimum-wage work force, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:<br /><br />- Half of minimum-wage employees are under 25.<br /><br />- Two percent of men paid hourly earn less than the federal minimum wage, while 4 percent of women earn less.<br /><br />- The leisure and hospitality industry has the largest amount of hourly paid employees working at or below the federal minimum wage.<br /><br />We thought we'd highlight some jobs that earn minimum wage. Often, these positions are good starts to professional lives. Each position has its own requirements and can lead to different paths, many of which you probably didn't think of.<br /><br />Note: You or someone you know might have one of these positions and earn well above the minimum wage. Earnings differ by location, employer and experience. Also, some positions can earn the minimum wage plus tips, which can have a substantial effect on total earnings.<br /><br />Here is a sample of jobs that earn the federal minimum wage:<br /><br />Cafeteria attendant<br />What they do: Bus tables, take dirty dishes to the kitchen and make sure enough clean silverware and linens are available in a cafeteria.<br />Training needed: Training varies by employer.<br />Career path: Cafeteria attendants are privy to behind-the-scenes glimpses of dining facilities and might decide to work toward managerial roles in the food industry.<br /><br />Fast food worker<br />What they do: Prepare food and take customers' orders.<br />Training needed: Varies by employer, though good communication skills are a plus.<br />Career path: For workers who interact with customers frequently, their customer service skills are good preparation for sales jobs.<br /><br />Gaming services workers<br />What they do: Assist dealers, managers and supervisors by attending to customer needs.<br />Training needed: Varies by position and employer, but high school diploma and customer service skills are normally required, and possibly a gaming license.<br />Career path: There are several gaming positions that you can be promoted to, and ultimately you could rise to manager or higher.<br /><br />Baggage porters and bellhops<br />What they do: Assist hotel guests with their baggage and take them to their rooms.<br />Training needed: Training varies by employer, but good communication skills are helpful.<br />Career path: Porters and bellhops are often the first entry into the hospitality and resort industry for many workers who go on to be managers.<br /><br />Bartenders<br />What they do: Prepare and serve drinks to patrons.<br />Training needed: Extensive knowledge on drink preparation and excellent customer service skills.<br />Career path: You can make a career out of bartending, but you can also use your knowledge of the bar scene to start your own bar or club.<br /><br />Salary data based on information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<br /><br />Anthony Balderrama is a writer and blogger for CareerBuilder.com and its job blog, The Work Buzz.
