'There's some good in this world ... and it's worth fighting for'

<a href="http://swacgirl.blogspot.com/2006/10/theres-some-good-in-this-world-and-its.html"><i>[Encore post from October 24, 2006, during the George Allen campaign]</i></a><br /><br />Got home early last night - around midnight - early for these campaign days of putting in 12- and 16-hour days at headquarters. I work hard as a volunteer ... the local activists say I live at HQs. Not true ... but not far off....<br /><br />My 19-year-old daughter was still awake when I walked in the door. She hugged me and we sat in the living room and talked and talked ... even teens need their mommies once in a while.<br /><br />She understands my need to help in the political process. I got involved in politics in 1999 when she was 12 years old - the first BUSH campaign. She's lived with this for a long time. She sees my intensity. She learned American history, government, and politics from me - her home school teacher.<br /><br />After 9/11 it became more intense. I felt an urgency, a need to do what I could to put the right leaders in position to protect my family and my country.<br /><br />My daughter shares my love of America and, while not the political junkie I am, she understands my need to be involved. She sees my interest and love of politics ... but she also sees when I'm tired, beat down, feeling the attacks....<br /><br />We talked a long while about all sorts of things ... and then she put "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," a movie I had not seen, in the DVD player. She fast-forwarded to one particular scene.<br /><br />It brought tears to my eyes ... because it proved without a doubt that she got it. She understood what I was doing. She understood what I was going through.<br /><br />She was showing me a scene between Frodo and Sam where Frodo feels he can't go on ... and Sam is explaining how and why they must go on. I hugged my daughter to me and told her it was exactly what I needed to see ... and somehow my sweet girl had known that.<br /><blockquote><b>Frodo:</b> I can't do this, Sam.<br /><br /><b>Sam:</b> I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding on to something.<br /><br /><b>Frodo:</b> What are we holding on to, Sam?<br /><br /><b>Sam:</b> There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for. </blockquote>

Happy Tuesday

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren's speech to the AFL-CIO convention over the weekend was even better than <a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/09/supreme-court-subsidiary-of-business.html" rel="nofollow">we reported yesterday</a>. She (correctly) warned that the U.S. Supreme Court is about to become a wholly owned subsidiary of Big Business. But she said some other true and powerful things as well -- mostly about organized labor. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.alternet.org/economy/elizabeth-warren-slams-corporate-supreme-court">Alternet</a> brought us part of the speech, and we thought you really would want to read it:<br /><blockquote>When important decisions are made in Washington, too often, working families are ignored.  From tax policy to retirement security, the voices of hard-working people get drowned out by powerful industries and well-financed front groups.  Those with power fight to take care of themselves and to feed at the trough for themselves, even when it comes at the expense of working families getting a fair shot at a better future. </blockquote><blockquote>This isn’t new. Jaw-dropping pay package for McKesson's CEO

John Hammergren makes so much money that his company, McKesson, pays him an extra <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/01/02/he-s-one-of-the-nation-s-highest-paid-ceos-and-you-ve-never-heard-of-him.html" rel="nofollow">$17,000 for a financial planner</a> to count it all.<br /><br />McKesson workers don't earn enough to afford health care.<br /><br />Hammergren, McKesson's CEO, will be paid $51.7 million, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ceos-who-get-paid-much-more-than-workers-2013-3?op=1" rel="nofollow">over 847 times what the average worker at his company makes</a>. And even <a href="http://www.cwhonors.org/archives/histories/Hammergren.pdf">he admitted that McKesson workers can’t afford the essentials</a>: <br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">What’s great about the position of McKesson today as the world’s largest health care services company, our footprint is everywhere. We have systems in probably 50 or 60 percent of the hospitals in America. We have over a third of the pharmacies in America and we have systems in probably 90 percent of the payers in America.<br /><br />At the same time we can have a significant impact on the cost of providing the care. In fact, we have McKesson employees who can’t even afford… the 20 percent co-pay that’s required to have our insurance inside of McKesson. Those people should be afforded high quality health care, and should be provided it in a way that is cost effective.</blockquote>That interview was from 2004. Eight years later, the largest healthcare company in the country still doesn’t provide an affordable healthcare plan for employees. Exactly nothing has changed. Well, except the size of Hammergren’s pension. (Hint: <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-06-06/jumbo-severance-packages-for-top-ceos-are-growing">it definitely didn’t go down</a>). <br /><br />And it’s not because his company is doing great either. <br /><br />McKesson settled out of court <a href="http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2012/April/12-civ-539.html">for almost $200 million last year after being prosecuted for Medicaid fraud</a> by the Department of Justice. <br /><br />McKesson made $1.2 billion in 2011. Hammergren took 11 percent of that total home. <br /><br />The worst part is that he isn’t alone.<br /><div><br /><div><a href="http://www.ips-dc.org/reports/executive-excess-2013">Yet another study</a> shows the pay gap between the people who actually do the company’s work and the CEOs who collect the profit.<br /><br />Last year, <a href="http://www.aflcio.org/Corporate-Watch/CEO-Pay-and-You/CEO-to-Worker-Pay-Gap-in-the-United-States">the average CEO was paid 354 times as much as the average worker</a>. They now make 873 percent more than they were paid (including long-term incentives and other perks) in 1978.<br /><br />Worker pay <a href="http://www.epi.org/publication/ceo-pay-2012-extraordinarily-high/">increased 5.4 percent</a> during the same period.<br /><br />Being a highly paid CEO has no basis in actual talent. Over a third of the CEOs ranked as the top 25 well paid during the last 20 years <a href="http://www.ips-dc.org/reports/executive-excess-2013">have been fired, fined or settled claims of company fraud or whose company received bailout money in 2008</a>. </div></div>

The banner above for this event was posted at White's blog site <a href="http://www.aomin.org/" target="_blank">here</a>. <br /><br />This event is significant for several reasons:<br /><br />1. This is the first time that I am aware of where a Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) affiliated church has taken a step to help <u><b>expose</b></u> the deceit of Ergun Caner from 2001 to 2010. Most churches are silent, or worse they still are booking Caner as a guest speaker or youth camp pastor. Finally an SBC-affiliated (and <a href="http://sbtexas.com/affiliated-churches/first-baptist-church-lindale/832/" target="_blank">Southern Baptists of Texas Convention-affiliated<span id="goog_77943503"></span><span id="goog_77943504"></span></a>) church is allowing from their pulpit the truth to be told about Ergun Caner and his SBC friends who have failed to hold him accountable for this "Great Evangelical Cover-Up". It was at the mega SBC church Prestonwood Baptist - about 100 miles from Lindale - that Caner delivered probably his most deceitful sermon ever right after 9/11 to transform himself from Butch Caner into "Ergun Mehmet Giovani Caner": the trained terrorist who barely knew English and wore a turbin when he converted to Christianity. It was a lie to establish his brand as an expert on Islam, and really a heretical exaggeration of the transforming power of Christianity. This event is right in Caner's back yard. Lindale, Texas is located about 2 hours away from Arlington Baptist College (ABC) as seen on the map at right. On White's Internet radio broadcast last week, he specifically invited students at ABC - <a href="http://www.arlingtonbaptistcollege.edu/content/provost" target="_blank">where Caner is the provost</a> - to come and hear the truth about Caner's past deceit in SBC churches. Quoting White <a href="http://www.aomin.org/podcasts/20130905.mp3" target="_blank">from his Internet radio broadcast</a>:  <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><b><i>"If you are a student at Arlington Bible College you are an honored guest [at this event]. Our understanding is that there on campus this has been the big 'no-no' topic. Do not ask questions, do not say anything about it [Caner's past deception], and so a lot of students are wondering: 'what's the real story?'. So we want to provide you with that information, we think you are owed that."</i></b></div><br />This event is going to be live streamed at <a href="http://www.aomin.org/aoblog/" target="_blank">White's blog site</a> through YouTube and/or GooglePlus.
