The white one anyway.<br />And for a man who’s developed a thick skin after a series of setbacks, his dad<br />is one of the few who can still get underneath it.<br />Just like a fortnight ago when the Postecoglous gathered for a final family<br />lunch at the Mornington Peninsula home of his parents before he departed for<br />World Cup duty.<br />Dad Jim Postecoglou offered his son some 11th-hour selection advice.<br />Ange Postecoglou’s parents, Jim and Voula Postecoglou. Source: News Corp<br />Australia<br />“Ange gets upset that despite everything he’s done, and he’s done quite a<br />lot, he still cops criticism from dad,” explained sister Liz.<br />“They’ll have a bit of a chuckle, but he’s still the one person that gets<br />under his skin. Funny that.<br />“I guess dad always feels as though in many ways Ange is a young boy that<br />still needs guidance and he also feels he’s involved in his son’s life.”<br />Richard Bayliss and Andy Harper bring us the latest news from the Socceroos'<br />camp in Vitoria, with the team brushing off injury concerns and comfortable with<br />Adidas' Brazuca.<br />Nor has his love for the game diminished, especially those involving Ange’s<br />teams.<br />“He will sit and watch the same game over at least 10 to 15 times. He records<br />it on Fox and watches and analyses over and over,” mum Voula said<br />LANGERAK AIMING FOR KEEPER ROLE<br />Picture that, but back in the 1970s, Jim was saddled on the couch in their<br />Prahran home alongside his young son — a mad Liverpool fan and South Melbourne<br />junior.<br />“Football’s just been the one constant and that goes back to my dad passing<br />that love of the game on to me, which wasn’t easy,” Ange Postecoglou said.<br />A slightly hairy and more wirey Ange Postecoglou. Source: News Corp Australia<br />“I supported Carlton and I wanted to play footy at school, and I remember I<br />came home with a most-improved trophy and showed my dad really proudly. He just<br />gave me this look of disgust and grabbed a (soccer) ball and said: ‘Let’s go<br />to the park’.”<br />But there was a fleeting moment with another round ball — an orange one.<br />BRESCIANO A CONCERN FOR SOCCEROOS<br />ROGIC SHUTS OUT MESSIAH TALK<br />One day the Postecoglous received a visit from Australian basketball royalty in<br />Lindsay Gaze, suggesting their son had talent. Sometimes sharing a car with<br />Australian basketball great Andrew Gaze, Ange was among the dozens of local kids<br />shuttled to games by Lindsay.<br />“The soccer players used to be quite talented at basketball,” Lindsay<br />recalls.<br />But Jim had other ideas.<br />In good news for the Socceroos, centre back Matthew Spiranovic has made his<br />return to the training pitch.<br />“I was not too keen,” he says. “Between playing football at school and<br />basketball, I thought he was not going in the direction I hoped, then I started<br />taking him to South Melbourne (FC) games at  Park.”<br />Postecoglou had his first kick for South as a junior in 1974 and left in 2000<br />having played 193 senior games and won two titles as coach.<br />MCKAY: SOCCEROOS NO LOST CAUSE<br />“He took me down to South Melbourne when I was eight or nine and I didn’t<br />leave until I was 35,” explained Ange, who recalls watching Rale Rasic’s<br />Socceroos at the 1974 World Cup with his dad.<br />“It was the social glue between me and my father.<br />A bearded Ange messes around with his father Jim. Source: News Corp Australia<br />“He used to work hours and hours so I never saw him that much, he would leave<br />before I woke up and be back sometimes when I was in bed.<br />“I waited for those moments when he would wake me up in the middle of the<br />night to watch a game of football and it was just us two watching on a black and<br />white screen.”<br />Maybe that explains why Ange became fascinated with coaching “right from the<br />start’’, before a senior career began that saw him play for South and win<br />four Socceroos caps.<br />Postecoglou with Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers, the club the Socceroos coach<br />supported as a boy. Source: News Limited<br />“I supported Liverpool in the ’70s as much about Bill Shankly as Kevin<br />Keegan, Kenny Dalglish and the players,” Ange, 48, said.<br />“Then I got fascinated by the Boot Room and started reading about Shankly and<br />other coaches. I was interested as much in them as the players.<br />SOCCEROOS READY FOR WORLD CUP SHOPFRONT<br />“My playing career was pretty much a foundation for me to become coach.<br />As much as I enjoyed playing, I knew I wouldn’t reach any great heights, but<br />at all times I knew I was going to coach.<br />A lot of coaches say nothing replaces playing but I’ve enjoyed coaching more<br />than I did playing.”<br />Ange Postecoglou (far right) as assistant coach to Frank Arok at South Melbourne<br />Source: News Corp Australia<br />As he rolled into his adolescent years, his parents sensed a determination and a<br />tireless work ethic that’s  his success.<br />“His teenage years were training, training, training, never drinking or going<br />out,” father Jim said.<br />Liz added: “It wasn’t an easy journey, it wasn’t a normal life at all. He<br />sacrificed a lot to get to where he is.”<br />It begs the question: would he have been successful in what he set out to do? Be<br />it basketball or Aussie Rules.<br />Ange Postecoglou winning the NSL Championship as a coach with Paul Trimboli.<br />Source: News Corp Australia<br />“Yes, it would have been the same outcome, because whatever he does, he<br />dedicates 100 per cent,” said Voula.<br />The difference, says Ange, “is our game has given me extraordinary experiences<br />that no other sport could.<br />“Doesn’t matter how high you get in the AFL, I wouldn’t have got to<br />experience the Maracana or coach against Kaka, Adriano or to have seen Lionel<br />Messi when he was 15.<br />The Bank of Chile have released a stirring commercial ahead of the World Cup,<br />with the 33 Chilean miners rescued in 2010 telling their team that nothing is<br />impossible.<br />“If you think of the ups and downs during my lifetime — for me to have done<br />nothing else but football in that time means I must have had something in me<br />that I wasn’t going to give up. Source: News<br />Corp Australia<br />That drive saw him miss Liz’s wedding (the same day as a South Melbourne<br />game), and it’s also meant less family contact time recently with the crazy<br />pre-World Cup workload. But contact won’t cease.<br />“I call him the day of every game and say ‘good luck and may the Virgin Mary<br />be with you’, and I will call him in Brazil,” his mum vowed.

Jon regularly adds dishes to family get-togethers, or grills some delicious outdoor fare, or whips up new recipes.<br /><br />This morning he sent a recipe for cooking butternut squash in a humorous email that made me laugh as I read it -- I've <i>never</i> cooked butternut squash -- so asked if I could share it on my blog complete with his commentary. With his permission, here it is for those who like recipes (especially all those homeschool moms out there).<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Jon's Fall Butternut Squash</b></span><br />by Jon Phillips<br /><br /><i>Jon says, "What happens when you decide to buy a butternut squash for no particular reason? Use this for a fall-ish dinner side dish instead of potatoes!"</i> <b> </b><br /><br /><b>You’ll need</b>: 1 butternut squash, olive oil, pumpkin pie spice,* salt and pepper <br /><br /><b>Preparation: </b>First off, getting the skin off of the beast is like whittling the bark off of a log. Thankfully, the bark is not too thick.  Using a vegetable peeler, remove the rind. Cut the ends off of the squash, then cut in half both directions. Remove the seeds and the softish stuff around the seeds, then chop into 1” squares.<br /><br />Place the chopped-up squash into a 9x11 baking pan with a little sprinkling of salt and cover tightly. Bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.<br /><br />Heat some olive oil in a skillet and add the baked squash in a single layer. Unless you have a giant skillet, you will have leftover baked squash chunks. No worries, we can deal with those in the morning.<br /><br />After you have the squash sizzling in the olive oil, sprinkle some pumpkin pie spice* on the squash and some salt and pepper (a little cayenne would probably be a good addition). Don’t be too heavy-handed with the pumpkin pie spice ... we are not trying to make a pie here. Cook the chunks until browned and slightly crispy on all sides.<br /><br />Serve with roasted chicken or pork chops or whatever. (This was perfect with leftover roasted chicken from the store.)<br /><br /><i>Jon adds, "Now for the leftover Squash chunks...."</i><br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Jon's Butternut Squash Breakfast Hash Browns</b></span><br /><i>Don’t be scared, this is really good!</i><br /><br /><b>Stuff to have:</b> 1 butternut squash, tart green apple, 1 fresh green chile, onion, bacon, salt, pepper and pumpkin pie spice.<br /><br /><b>Preparation:</b> Cook some bacon until crispy.<br /><br />While the bacon is cooking; dice up some of the squash (1/4” - 3/8” cubes).  Dice some onion and one green chile. The ratio should be about 2-to-1 squash to onion. Also dice up a half of a green tart apple.  Drain the bacon on paper towel and drain off most of the grease.<br /><br />In the same pan you used for the bacon, saute the onion and chile until soft. Add the diced squash and apple. Add salt and pepper, cook until brown and crispy (it should look like hash browns).<br /><br />Add in 2 slices of crumbled bacon. Serve with eggs. WOW!<br /><br /><b>*Homemade pumpkin pie spice: </b><br />Much better than premixed and you probably already have everything.  4 Tablespoons ground cinnamon, 3 teaspoons ground nutmeg, 3 teaspoons ground ginger, 2 teaspoons allspice, 2 teaspoons ground clove. 'There's some good in this world ... and it's worth fighting for'

<a href="http://swacgirl.blogspot.com/2006/10/theres-some-good-in-this-world-and-its.html"><i>[Encore post from October 24, 2006, during the George Allen campaign]</i></a><br /><br />Got home early last night - around midnight - early for these campaign days of putting in 12- and 16-hour days at headquarters. I work hard as a volunteer ... the local activists say I live at HQs. Not true ... but not far off....<br /><br />My 19-year-old daughter was still awake when I walked in the door. She hugged me and we sat in the living room and talked and talked ... even teens need their mommies once in a while.<br /><br />She understands my need to help in the political process. I got involved in politics in 1999 when she was 12 years old - the first BUSH campaign. She's lived with this for a long time. She sees my intensity. She learned American history, government, and politics from me - her home school teacher.<br /><br />After 9/11 it became more intense. I felt an urgency, a need to do what I could to put the right leaders in position to protect my family and my country.<br /><br />My daughter shares my love of America and, while not the political junkie I am, she understands my need to be involved. She sees my interest and love of politics ... but she also sees when I'm tired, beat down, feeling the attacks....<br /><br />We talked a long while about all sorts of things ... and then she put "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," a movie I had not seen, in the DVD player. She fast-forwarded to one particular scene.<br /><br />It brought tears to my eyes ... because it proved without a doubt that she got it. She understood what I was doing. She understood what I was going through.<br /><br />She was showing me a scene between Frodo and Sam where Frodo feels he can't go on ... and Sam is explaining how and why they must go on. I hugged my daughter to me and told her it was exactly what I needed to see ... and somehow my sweet girl had known that.<br /><blockquote><b>Frodo:</b> I can't do this, Sam.<br /><br /><b>Sam:</b> I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding on to something.<br /><br /><b>Frodo:</b> What are we holding on to, Sam?<br /><br /><b>Sam:</b> There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for. </blockquote>

We had corn for lunch and corn for dinner. <i>Yum.</i><br /><br />As we drove back through the rain and fog to Augusta with our prized ears, I told Barb about a growing-up memory when I was a little girl in Chesterfield County. My mom and aunt would buy dozens of ears of corn on the cob, parboil it, and slice it off the cobs into freezer bags for good winter eating. My sister and I would sit eagerly at the table waiting for leftover cobs that had just enough of the good kernels left for nibbling. That was some <i>gooood</i> eating. Barb has done her share of putting up corn in the freezer, too.<br /><br />Memories and summertime corn. It was all good today.<br /><br />The Liskeys have been growing and selling corn for 29 years. Mrs. Liskey said they will be there for another 10 days or so and then that will be it for this year. With Labor Day cookouts this weekend, you may want to get some for the grill.<br /><br />The stand is on Rt. 11 just south of the Rockingham Farmers Market (with the windmills) and is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Corn is priced $5.50/dozen, $3/half dozen, and $0.50 an ear. The fields surround the stand ... it is as fresh as it can be -- picked each morning.
