There was a splendid opening Eucharist – first class music and an excellent sermon by Bishop Katharine.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14pt;">In the evening between legislative duties, I joined the Indigenous Theological Training Institute at a reception. It was good to see old friends and meet new ones. ITTI does vital work – unseen by most. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14pt;">Then, we had the “big hearing” on structure. I was honestly surprised. 400 people attended. There has been a lot of nuttiness and paranoia on line about structural reform; but there was only one speaker who even suggested a smidgen of that. 40 people were given the chance to speak to the reform proposals. 38 passionately endorsed creating a special commission to propose transformation in governance. Several people spoke in favor of a Constitutional Convention to adopt the changes that would be proposed. The reason for the special commission is that the existing standing commissions are good at polishing the existing canons but are not set up to design a whole new system. The reason for a Constitutional Convention is that changing canons would be a roughly 9 year process and the Canons would then probably turn out to be unconstitutional.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14pt;">The second day felt like a roller coaster. This morning the Structure Committee discussed what we heard last night. While some were impressed by “the overwhelming groundswell” for change; others characterized the call for a special commission as “magical thinking,” “unfaithful,” etc. and it did not sound like much was going to happen at all. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14pt;">In our Friday afternoon hearings, we heard testimony on a resolution re-imagining the Presiding Bishop’s office as part time, with the PB no longer playing the role of CEO, and another moving toward a smaller unicameral convention. Both ideas seemed interesting at a minimum, perhaps promising. Then we heard from a slew of young adults wanting to serve on the special commission on restructuring. I felt some inner discomfort knowing that whether there will be such a special commission is not the sure thing they think it is. They are eager, in fact insistent, on participating in the restructuring process which I was not at all sure the existing governance structures were willing to hand over. I spent the afternoon fretting about what dashing their hopes might do to their passion for mission and ministry.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14pt;">Then tonight at our committee meeting, some subterranean shift had happened. No one expressly said they had changed their mind, but tonight people were generally accepting the assumption we were going to create a group to propose adaptive change to our governance structure. I would not put any money on what the sentiments will be in the morning. But, for tonight, we appear to be headed toward some new thinking.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14pt;">Along the way, I have encountered seminary classmates, a former member of the Community of Celebration (FisherFolk) with which we lived for a summer, the grandchildren of people I have buried, clergy colleagues and folks I worked with on diocesan conventions in Georgia, etc.  General Convention has a kind of This Is Your Life quality. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 408.75pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14pt;">We have just been decompressing with the Nevada deputies. It is helpful after a day of the strange world of Convention to compare notes with people we know who have been having their own strange adventures. Comparing notes is a bit of a reality check.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Die Arabische Liga ist dabei und damit die erzkonservativen Golfstaaten, die für ein Eingreifen plädieren. Selbst einmarschieren wollen sie nicht, das sollen die USA und ihre europäischen Verbündeten tun. Sogar Al Kaida bezeichnet sich als Freund des syrischen Volkes. Die Terrororganisation will bereits in Afghanistan erprobte Krieger an die syrische Front geschickt haben, denn was sich einige Mit-Freunde wünschen, ist ganz nach ihrem Geschmack: Das säkulare Assad-Regime soll verschwinden, die – in ihren Augen- ketzerischen Schiiten-Alawiten von der Macht vertrieben werden. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span lang="DE-AT" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Und dann? Keiner weiß genau, wer zur Opposition gehört, wer welchen Einfluss hat. Unklar ist das Zahlenverhältnis zwischen Gegnern und Anhängern des Regimes. Niemand hat eine Ahnung, wer die Waffen bekommt, die die USA der „Opposition“ zukommen lassen wollen. Und was halten die sunnitischen Geschäftsleute, die kurdischen Soldaten, die drusischen Bauern und die christlichen Handwerker von diesen Freunden, den Assad-Gegnern, der bewaffneten Opposition? Sie schicken Panzer und Scharfschützen, halten Homs im Würgegriff. Aber das Regime hält nun schon seit Monaten dem Druck stand, und seine Armee aus Sunniten, Drusen, Kurden, Christen und Alawiten kämpft. Das gelingt keinem auch noch so skrupellosen Alleinherrscher nur mit einer Handvoll hirnloser Geheimdienstler, willenloser Soldaten und gekaufter Anhänger.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span lang="DE-AT" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Es ist ein Treppenwitz der Geschichte, dass ausgerechnet Franzosen und Amerikaner – um nur diese beiden herauszugreifen – sich jetzt so vehement für den Sturz von Präsident Baschar al Assad und den Sieg der Demokratie in diesem Land einsetzen. Als Kolonialherren haben die Franzosen aus Machtkalkül einst nicht nur Teile des Landes abgezwackt (um Libanon zu gründen) oder verschenkt (um die Türkei, allerdings vergeblich, in den Anti-Hitler-Pakt zu holen). Sie haben durch ihre chaotische Politik damals auch den Boden dafür bereitet, dass die Alawiten die Kontrolle über die Armee bekamen und sich nach rund einem Dutzend Putschen der alte Assad, Vater von Baschar, zum Diktator aufschwingen konnte. Und jetzt? Frankreich wittert neue Chancen, zu alter Macht und Größe zu gelangen. Früher hieß das Neokolonialismus, heute spricht man von Wirtschaftsinteressen. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span lang="DE-AT" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Aber es reicht auch, eine Dekade zurück und auf die USA unter seinem damaligen Präsidenten George W. Bush zu blicken. Mit dem Überfall auf den Irak im März 2003 wurde zwar Bushs Lieblingsfeind Saddam Hussein gestürzt, aber es wurden auch alle zarten Pflanzen von Demokratisierung, Zivilgesellschaft, Reformierung, Öffnung in der arabischen Welt zertrampelt: Kein Bürgerrechtler, Aktivist, Oppositioneller in diesen Ländern konnte sich danach mehr zu westlichen Werten bekennen. Israels Premier Yitzhak Rabin hat mit dem PLO-Chef und „Erz-Terroristen“ Yasser Arafat 1993 einen Friedensvertrag unterzeichnet, US-Präsident Richard Nixon ist 1972 nach China gefahren und schüttelte Diktator Mao Zedong die Hand. Das hat zwar nicht die Probleme gelöst, aber Eskalationen verhindert und Spannungen minimiert. Die Syrer brauchen Hilfe. The DiMenna-Nyselius Library of Fairfield University seeks energetic,   self-motivated librarians with a strong public services commitment for   the following shifts: Monday evenings 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Tuesday   evenings 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., and alternating Saturdays 10:00 a.m. –   6:00 p.m. Some flexibility is desirable for working as a substitute for   other evening/weekend reference staff. Schedule varies during  holidays,  summer and intersessions. The Library also invites  applications for a  part-time instruction librarian opening to teach  weekdays as part of a  busy Information Literacy Program. Requirements:  MLS from ALA-accredited  program. Prior reference desk experience.  Demonstrated ability to  communicate, both orally and in writing, to a  variety of audiences.  Experience with electronic reference resources.  For the instruction  position: teaching experience using active learning  techniques is highly  desirable.
