The Backlash Continues

I have to say that it warms the cockles of my black little heart to finally be able to see some good news in our fight for our Second Amendment protections.<br /><br />First off this week of course, was the successful recall of two of the major backers of the draconian gun control measures passed in Colorado that went into effect recently.<br /><br />That oughtta give some of the rest of those sonsabitches reason for pause in that arena.<br /><br /><blockquote>The vote, which came five months after the United States Senate defeated several gun restrictions, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/11/us/colorado-lawmaker-concedes-defeat-in-recall-over-gun-law.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0">handed another loss to gun-control supporters</a> and gave moderate lawmakers across the country a warning about the political risks of voting for tougher gun laws.<br /><br />The immediate effect of the recalls — the first of their kind in Colorado — was to remove two state senators, Angela Giron of Pueblo and John Morse of Colorado Springs, and replace them with Republicans. </blockquote><br />The second bit of good news and of far greater import in my opinion was the reaffirmation of a Supreme Court ruling back in 2010 that said every city and state must abide by the Second Amendment .<br /><br /><blockquote>The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2010, in a case challenging Chicago's gun restrictions, that every state and city must adhere to the Second Amendment. The ruling did not strike down the Chicago restrictions directly, but sent the case back to a U.S. appeals court for review.<br /><br />In December 2012, the appeals court ruled that Illinois's ban on concealed carry was unconstitutional and gave the state six months to create a law allowing guns to be carried in public.</blockquote><br /><a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/12/chicago-gun-registry_n_3909598.html">That six month period is now up and amid much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments, the Chicago city council was forced to vote to remove a gun registry requirement that has been in place since 1968 and now must also get right with an Illinois law passed in July permitting concealed carry in that state.</a><br /><br /><blockquote>Illinois approved a concealed carry law in July, giving control of gun regulations to the state and essentially nullifying Chicago's power to require that gun owners register their weapons and have a city firearms permit.</blockquote><blockquote>Chicago on Wednesday reluctantly abolished a 45-year-old requirement that gun owners register their weapons with the city, marking a victory for advocates of gun rights such as the National Rifle Association.<br /><br />The city council voted to end the gun registry in place since 1968 to comply with court rulings against Chicago and Illinois gun control laws, and to bring the city into line with a state concealed carry law.</blockquote><br />The sniveling of that little rat bastard Rahm Emanuel was especially sweet to my ears.<br /><br /><blockquote>"I happen to think the court's wrong. I think their interpretation is wrong," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said of the rulings that forced Chicago to eliminate the registry. Even in retirement, America is more unequal

Only half of Americans saved more than $2,500 for retirement, <a href="http://www.epi.org/publication/retirement-inequality-chartbook/">according to a new study published by the Economic Policy Institute</a>. Researchers warn that retirement plan “participation has been flat or declining in recent years [when participation should be increasing] as the baby boomers enter their 50s and early 60s, [ages] when participation rates tend to be high.”<br /><br />Households in the top one percent average over $1.3 million in retirement account savings.<br /><br />At the same time, only 45 percent of workers age 26 to 61 added to any sort of retirement plan in 2010. Ten years ago, 52 percent of the population participated.<br /><br />Shrinking retirement plans are a stark reminder of how few people actually can afford to save for their futures, as workers across all ages are finding it harder to contribute to retirement savings.<br /><br />Even as little as a decade ago, more workers across the board were paid enough that they could plan for the future.<br /><br />Only 36 percent of 26 to 31 year olds had savings for their retirement in 2010. In 2000, 43 percent did. <br /><br />Almost 60 percent of workers aged 50 to 55 added to pension plans in 2000. A decade later, nine percent fewer workers in the same age group manage to add anything to their retirement savings. <br /><br />And the later workers were born, the less likely they are to actually have significant retirement savings as they grow older. <br /><br />After adjusting for inflation, Americans aged 62 to 67 in 2010 managed to increase their average retirement savings 455 percent over their 1992 counterparts, but the average worker in any age bracket under 44 managed to save just about what a similar worker in 1998 did. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.epi.org/publication/retirement-inequality-chartbook/">The EPI report notes</a>:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Successive generations should be saving more in retirement accounts due to their higher average incomes, the shift from pensions to individual savings, and Social Security benefit cuts. But while the retirement savings of middle-aged and older households have generally grown, those of younger households have stayed flat or declined in recent years.</blockquote>Just like income itself, who can afford to save for retirement is grossly unequal. <br /><br />Seventy-two percent of total 2010 retirement savings came from households in the top 20 percent of income, meaning that most tax subsidies for retirement savings go to high-income households, assuming they file their taxes correctly. <br /><br />Even factoring in <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/us-income-inequality-record-high-top-1-earned-fifth-total-income-2012-1404335">record-breaking salaries</a>, the top fifth of paid workers still has a much higher percentage of retirement savings-to-income than any other group and save over 90 percent more than what their 1989 equivalents managed. <br /><br />At least Americans can keep on working for longer, as people are getting older and older. <a href="http://www.urban.org/uploadedpdf/411964_senior_unemployment.pdf">Unless they actually can’t</a>. <br /><br />

One of the points in his fairly technical and detailed talk focused on how the rippling facade is able to accommodate the window washing rig that travels up and down the building. The continuous tracks that extend from top to bottom allow such maintenance, a feature that was incorporated (and therefore considered) from an early stage. Such foresight is hardly present in Gehry's Guggenheim Bilbao, as expressed in the aptly named <i>Gehry's Vertigo</i>.<br /><br /><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVzoaC2ZZdUw27IT3HFmovDdA4vTUGbB7izb60khkTzXP4gSnHPXzkxYjx4OlnsYZNSEUjhd5e9mrDTBY-mZUKtPyZm8FPwBDANbz7WR3H3YM-hSoD7PTR751cVMdcVHugP95wFoYI2TFP/s1600/Gehry_Vertigo_HD_1.jpg" /><br /><br />In the first two minutes of the film by Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine we witness two people traversing the titanium facade of the famous building. Are they performers? Stunt people? Maintenance crew? From <a href="http://archidose.blogspot.com/2013/06/book-dvd-review-koolhaas-houselife.html">other films</a> <a href="http://archidose.org/wp/2013/07/08/pomerol-herzog-de-meuron/">by the pair</a> we know the latter is the case, and for much of the next 45 minutes we watch the rope climbers-cum-window washers as they maintain the inside and outside of the complex building. While our cinematic experience of the building is not limited to these workers (we also see a wedding party taking pictures and we follow a boy throughout the whole interior, for example), it uniquely presents much of the architecture via first-hand accounts—for instance we see the roof and atrium from the window washer's perspective, via cameras mounted to their hard hats. In these scenes the film's title makes perfect sense.<br /><br /><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-z_iyQ1iRogk8notu3PZ7nRwhPfbdVyHU2mPuE2cyMgDlBd_mCLYTn-MtvnzSTN2nrHGhuugrowNouPJbLOeEPKkTxhS4VXRqCyJSg8mq3g_bGkCxAwtMl-vmheirOEskwTWcWbTIk6se/s1600/Gehry_Vertigo_HD_2.jpg" /><br /><br />Perhaps because the building is so well known, Bêka and Lemoine appear to be having a lot more fun and doing more cinematic experimentation in this film than the ones on Koolhaas's <a href="http://archidose.blogspot.com/2013/06/book-dvd-review-koolhaas-houselife.html">House in Bordeaux</a> or Herzog & de Meuron's <a href="http://archidose.org/wp/2013/07/08/pomerol-herzog-de-meuron/">Pomerol</a>. Humorous scenes include the boy's voyage through the museum (accompanied by a soundtrack that seems to be generated by the fast-forward cutting of the scene mixed with zoo-like sounds) and a fast-forward scene of cleaning and switching out exhibitions, accompanied by the ticking of a stopwatch. But it's the rope climbers who thread the film together, as they appear intermittently between other scenes. What every teacher ought to do... before it is too late

<p> They've already decided. The decision is made. If someone is in danger, they'll be there. They'll put out the fire. Do we have a clue?</p> <p>Even more, do we even say thank you?</p> <p>Not the generic 'thank you for all you do" but the more powerful:</p> <ul> <li>Thank you for your service.</li> <li>Thank you for keeping us safe.</li> <li>Thank you for responding even when it is scary or hard or upsetting.</li></ul> <p>There are public servants everywhere but few are paid as little and expected to do so much.</p> <h3>The Surprising truth about the offices of first responders</h3> <p>Yesterday as my students delivered and set up an appreciation for local law enforcement, they were met with gratitude. In two separate places they were told:</p> <blockquote><div>"People don't really want to come down here for good things, it is always the tough things we deal with."</div></blockquote> <h1>What every teacher ought to do at least once this year...</h1> <p>Many of you have been sharing on Twitter how you've had students create cards and do things to say "thank you." Wherever you live, whoever you are, if you teach - <strong>make sure you've scheduled one day and one activity this year to thank these heroes of our community.</strong> </p> <p>Too often we feel gratitude when their ears are cold and crisp uniforms are donned to lie in rest.</p> <p>I have one fine police officer in mind who gave his life in pursuit of a thief and was fatally shot.</p> <p>Did anyone ever come by before he died and say thank you? Did he feel the gratitude of a grateful community? </p> <p>Even more, did I say "thank you for your service?" I saw him the week before it happened and I know I didn't. I'm guilty. I didn't tell him thank you, even when he came in his dress blues to pick up his son from school. I knew he had a hard job working a tough part of town and I didn't say thank you. </p> <p>I can't go back -- but in his honor, I can say - never again. I will be grateful and lead students to be also. In his honor, I can ask all of you to do the same. </p> <p><strong>We best honor our fallen heroes by thanking their living brothers and sisters who carry on in the hard work at hand. You can do nothing about 9/11 and the heroes but use your sadness to inspire gratitude for the living.</strong></p> <h1>Gratitude can be taught and encouraged</h1> <p>In such a high burnout, low paying, highly emotional profession (sounds like teaching doesn't it?) - we should show our gratitude and inspire it in our students.</p> <p>In the US, September 21 is "National Thank a Police Officer Day" - while you shouldn't need an excuse - if 9/11 isn't enough then let that be your excuse. </p> <p>Whatever your country, you have people keeping you safe. Thank them. They deserve it.</p> <p><strong>Thank You Hymn</strong></p> <p>There are heroes among us serving every day in a quiet way.</p> <p>But if trouble is there, they are too, any time we ask - there's the blue</p> <p>If the worst happens and there's a fire - the thin red line will attack the pire</p> <p>Let's not wait to give their due, let's say thanks from me and you. </p> <h3>Make a date to appreciate</h3> <p>Will you get out your planner right now and plan something?</p> <p>And remember - gratitude is something we all impart. Whether it is being thankful for those in the community who serve or the lunchroom staff or janitors, or front office or teachers or parents or grandparents - being grateful for what is done for us daily is something we should impart to this generation. (We should be grateful for these precious children, they are a gift to our lives and our future.)</p> <p>Maybe some feel this generation are ungrateful because we're not teaching and fostering an environment of gratitude. </p> <p>Thank you to all the heroes among us, but as I continue to ponder in the afterglow of 9/11, I'm thankful because I know that there are many men and women here in Mitchell County and beyond who step in and do a hard job any time duty calls. </p> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: none;"> Remember your noble calling, teacher.
