One of them featured William Shatner as Captain Kirk warning rookie host Seth MacFarlane about the near future’s cruel headlines skewering his performance.</div><div class="body.textrr" style="color: #3d3c3c; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;"></div><div class="body.textrr" style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">MacFarlane — a wild card as emcee — wasn’t an unmitigated disaster, a la James Franco-Anne Hathaway in 2011. Instead he was mediocre, just as Captain Kirk’s prescient faux headlines predicted.</div><div class="body.textrr" style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">The 39-year-old creative force behind Fox’s animated series “Family Guy,” “American Dad” and “The Cleveland Show” started strong by welcoming folks to the 85th installment of the Oscars, quipping that “the quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh begins now.”</div><div class="body.textrr" style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">The quest to make the rest of us laugh all the way through turned out to be more of a mixed bag. MacFarlane occasionally pushed the envelope — and pushed buttons. He sang about lady parts in the sophomoric number “We Saw Your Boobs” and cracked a Chris Brown-Rihanna domestic abuse joke that elicited groans. But he generally came off likeable and never went so far as to alienate the ever-graying loyalists who tune into the Oscars year after year.</div><div class="body.textrr" style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">With his young, male fan base (the Academy Award’s largely untapped audience), MacFarlane clearly was brought in with the mission of luring new viewers. He did a decent job straddling the line between modern and old-fashioned and was appropriately unpredictable. That alone is a refreshing change in an awards ceremony shackled to tradition. But his overall performance wasn’t riveting, memorable or just plain funny enough to salvage the bloated show that at times felt more like the Tonys than the Oscars.</div><div class="body.textrr" style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">First-time producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan (“Smash”) packed the program with an inordinate amount of musical numbers. Some of these acts were highlights of the show, such as Shirley Bassey belting out “Goldfinger” in honor of the 50th anniversary of James Bond films. But the sheer quantity tacked on precious minutes to a show that would have felt long even if it had ended on time.</div><br /></div>

Overrated and Underrated

The late, great Christopher Hitchens once declared that “the four most overrated things in life are champagne, lobsters, anal sex, and picnics.” Man, that dude was pretty observant wasn’t he? Anyway, I thought I would put together a little list of things that are overrated and underrated for you guys today.<br /><div class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Overrated:</b> NFL’s obsession with a player’s 40-Time. So a guy can run 40 yards in 4.3 seconds. That’s great. How ‘bout making sure he can pick up a blitz? Or better yet, hold onto the football when someone hits him. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Underrated:</b> Sour Cream and Onion Pringles. Oh sure, Nacho Cheese Doritos are the bomb, but Pringles provides us with a really quality product with great taste in a very convenient tennis ball tube. You can’t beat that. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Overrated:</b> The 80’s. Sure, everyone remembers the 80’s so fondly, but three words. Acid. Wash. Denim. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Underrated:</b> Chrissy Teigen. Sure it’s pretty and all that, but it brings out a level of panic in people that just isn’t healthy. 90% of the people on the road become a huge threat to our wellbeing as soon as they see the first snowflake. Worse than that even is the nationwide panic that ensues anytime a major winter storm moves across the country. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Underrated:</b> PBS. Most Saturdays I leave my TV on PBS the entire afternoon. Home improvement, gardening and cooking shows beat virtually everything else on TV. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Overrated:</b> College Basketball. These kids coming out of high school today can’t play the game. They can’t dribble, pass, shoot, rebound, play defense or hit their free throws. Other than that they’re a blast to watch. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Underrated:</b> Silence. Just sitting there reading a book with no radio or TV on is one of life’s little pleasures that people forget to take advantage of. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Overrated:</b> Smartphones. There is such a thing as being “too connected” guys. You can’t get away from people if you have a smartphone. No matter where you go or what you do they can contact you in some way. Also, you are paying a ridiculous amount each month to do things on your smartphone that would be much easier and more enjoyable on that laptop sitting right next to you. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Underrated:</b> People watching. People are hilarious when they don’t realize someone is watching them. Just kicking back on a park bench or at the mall or airport or a casino and watching people as they wander aimlessly through life is just about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Overrated: </b> Home ownership. While it does provide some pros, there are so many cons to owning a home and spending all your free time trying to keep it up tops the list of cons. All that yard work isn’t exactly fun either. But what sucks most about home ownership is that you’ll NEVER get back what you put into it. You add up the principal plus the interest plus all the expenses of fixing every little thing that needs it and you’ll spend 3 or 4 times what you finally get back on a house the day you sell it. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Underrated:</b> Frozen Pizza: Frozen pizza gets a bad rap, but it can actually be pretty damn yummy. Of course, sometimes it needs a little help from you. The problem with most frozen pizzas is they need more toppings. Okay, put more topping son them! More pepperoni, maybe salami, slice up summer sausage or kielbasa and some shredded Colby and mozzarella cheese you can fancy up that .99 cent frozen pizza from Aldi nicely. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Overrated:</b> Buffets: Badly prepared food that you probably don’t really want anyway that’s been sitting around for the last hour and is either super-hot or cold? I’ll pass. Not to mention the fact that kids have probably touched everything on the food bar with their snot covered fingers. Pizza buffets are actually the worst. The only thing they put out is cheese pizzas or something with green peppers or pineapple on it. Gross.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Underrated:</b> Podcasting. Everyone should have a podcast. Wait, almost everyone does! Anyway, you can talk about anything you want. Do comedy bits. Interview interesting people and do it all without anyone trying to control your content. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Okay, that’s enough for now. Not a First Half Team

I guess it's better than the other way around?<br /><br />...?<br /><br />I am looking forward to watching a game played by the University of Michigan men's basketball team where they don't start in the hole.<br /><br />It's as if they need to play a half of basketball in their practice gym before they begin the real game! Their warmup routine needs a real makeover. I don't know if the team isn't mentally prepared for the first half, or if they just work better from behind.<br /><br />It even seemed like the second half was much more of a Michigan style today. They started running up and down the floor better, their passes were sharper, and they were getting rebounds and avoiding blocked shots.Their shooting percentage improved from 48% in the first half to 54%. Three point percentage improved from 28% to 36%. Trey Burke got back on track, even becoming the seventh player in Michigan basketball history to get to 1,000 points as a sophomore with his game high 26 points.<br /><br />But what is taking them so long? Is it too much to ask for a wire-to-wire beatdown of an opposing team? As we've seen, coming back from behind doesn't work against the high ranked teams, like Indiana and Michigan State. Both of which, by the way, Michigan still needs to play a second time. Top notch teams know that they need to start strong and finish strong. Most of the time, just "finish strong" won't win games. Even a bottom feeding team will pounce on that.<br /><br /><b>In other news...</b><br /><br />The Tigers are back in business! The period of mourning is over. It feels good to have a solid DH back in business. Welcome back, Victor Martinez! (And Little Victor!) Bruce Rondon - future (or present) closer - provided a solid inning of pitching on Saturday. The big bats are back to hitting home runs. And if we could get all of our injuries out of the way now (Boesch, Santiago) that would prove useful during the season.

Rapper Kenny Clutch's father: Son 'victim' of Las Vegas shooting
