Budget beach stays in the Dominican Republic [ BeritaTerkini ]

<p>The Dominican Republic is not just about merengue music and package holidays. It’s a big island (more than twice the size of Wales, and second only to Cuba in the Caribbean) so there’s plenty of room for variety and genuine Dominican life, unlike on smaller islands that are monopolised by tourism. With the all-inclusive resorts concentrated around Punta Cana in the south-east corner and Puerto Plata on the north coast, it’s easy to escape to its dozens of stunning, unspoilt beaches, mountainous interior and chilled resorts such as Las Terrenas in the lush Samaná peninsula.</p> <p>Surfers have always headed to hip Cabarete, but are now discovering the remote south-west, a big favourite for eco-tourism. (All the places listed here are owned by foreigners, but that’s because most Dominicans who have the money to invest in a hotel generally open expensive, high-end places.)</p> <h2>Todo Blanco, Las Galeras, Samaná</h2> <p>On a quintessential palm-fringed beach, this Italian-owned hotel of only eight rooms maintains an exclusive air and is all white: walls, furnishings, louvred shutters and paintwork. Its identical rooms have two queen-size beds and generous balconies facing the beach, and the elevated position gives the two-storey plantation-style building fabulous views of the gardens and blissful bay beyond, with a small restaurant open to the breeze in front. Lt. Governor Bolling congratulates Terry McAuliffe; urges GOP to look at its future

On Tuesday night, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling issued the following statement on the 2013 election results:<br /><blockquote>“The 2013 campaigns have come to an end, and the people of Virginia have chosen their leaders for the next four years. I congratulate Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam on their election victories, and stand ready to help them in any way I can as they prepare to lead Virginia.<br /><br />“The outcome of the race for Attorney General has not yet been determined, so I will refrain from commenting on that race until the final results are known. However, I recognize Mark Obenshain and Mark Herring for participating in such a hard fought and competitive campaign.<br /><br />“I also thank Ken Cuccinelli, Robert Sarvis and E.W. Jackson for their willingness to engage in the political process. Campaigns are never easy, and this campaign was particularly difficult. I hope they will take comfort knowing that they did their best, even though the outcome may not have been as they desired.<br /><br />“I also congratulate all of the candidates who won election victories tonight in the Virginia House of Delegates. I am pleased that the House of Delegates will continue to have a strong Republican majority, under the capable leadership of Speaker Bill Howell. Election 2013: Governor McDonnell congratulates Terry McAuliffe

Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement Tuesday night regarding the election of Terry McAuliffe as the 72nd governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.<br /><blockquote>“I want to congratulate Terry McAuliffe on his election as the next governor of Virginia. There is no higher honor than serving in the same office once held by Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. Virginia is a Commonwealth of tremendous history and opportunity; this is the place where America began. The privilege of serving as governor carries with it immense responsibility, and I know Terry McAuliffe will act in the best interests of the more than 8 million people who call Virginia home.<br /><br />“Elections are long, tough, hard-fought affairs. But they have an end date. For the 2013 campaign, that date is today. Now, the signs, stickers and ads must be put away. In their place must come comity, cooperation and a commitment to working together, across party lines, to continue to improve the quality of life of all Virginians. Luz Elena Coloma, General Manager, Quito Turismo [ BeritaTerkini ]

<p><br> Quito is much more than just Ecuador’s capital. The city has one of the largest and best-preserved historic centers in the Americas. Indeed, it led Quito to be named one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1978. Quito’s 130 historic buildings include ornate and art-filled 16th and 17th century basilicas, churches and palaces, connected by winding cobblestone streets leading to broad open plazas.</p> <p><br> Located in the Andes at 9,350 feet above sea level, Quito is within close range of spectacular natural attractions highlighted by Cotopaxi National Park. The city’s busy marketplaces and charming bohemian districts offer opportunities to experience cuisine and culture. Quito recently opened an international airport and a new convention center is under construction at the old airport site, along with several new hotels.</p> <p><br> The job of coordinating Quito’s international tourism promotion falls to Luz Elena Coloma, general manager of Quito Turismo, a division of Ecuador’s tourism ministry. A former city council member with an intimate knowledge of Quito and its people, Coloma has focused on publicizing the city’s attractions and helping Quito shed its past identity as a pit stop for travelers headed to the Galapagos Islands. We spoke with Coloma at the recent Latin America TravelMart.</p> <p><br><strong>How have travelers traditionally regarded travel to Quito?</strong> Quito has been an afterthought for most tour operators. I understand that because 15 years ago in the tourist center it was difficult to have a three-day visit there. You didn’t have too many attractions, you had a lot of vendors in the street and you had a lot of insecurity. It was not visitor-friendly. Still you had all of these monumental treasures. So what the tourism operators did was bring the tourists in early in the morning at around 8 a.m. for a three-hour visit to see the Church of La Compania and then off they went to Galapagos.</p> <p><br><strong>What has your office and the government done to change those perceptions?</strong> Of course, Galapagos is the jewel of the crown of tourism here, but we have communicated that if you do not visit the Galapagos, you can still have a wonderful visit. We have grown. We now have better services, a new airport and we are building a new convention facility. The historic center has more things to offer and we have the Tren Crucero historic train and more touristic products. The private tourism industry is involved as well. The suit would have a powered exoskeleton that could help a soldier move quickly while carrying heavy weight. “It also would carry a built-in oxygen supply in case of poison gas, a cooling system to keep soldiers comfortable, and sensors to <a href="http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-ironman-military-20131030,0,2263878.story#axzz2jEerKPDU">transmit the wearer’s vital signs</a> back to headquarters,” according to a report in the <i>Los Angeles Times</i>.<br /><br />The suit won’t imitate the movies in one critical way, at least for many, many years: There will be no zooming around the globe at jet speeds. Flight is a fanciful, Herculean technical hurdle, and isn’t core to the suit’s primary goals. A more practical challenge shared with the fictional Tony Stark is perfecting the proper battery to power such a suit, given the perennial conflict between size and weight and the need to keep the suit flexible and not burdensome.<br /><br />The project is being overseen by the U.S. Special Operations Command, based at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. Unlike a traditional defense contracting program, the Special Operations Command is gathering technologies required for the project and will itself integrate them into a final suit prototype. A second demonstration of various components for the suit is scheduled for Nov. 20, roughly four months after the initial session in Tampa. About 60 products have been submitted so far, although no funds have been allotted to any company, said Lieutenant Commander Li Cohen. The first fighters assigned to the suits will likely be on “kinetic missions,” she said, where there’s a high probability of combat and weapons fire.<br /><br />The program is on track to have a “first-generation capability” by summer 2014, according to a video produced by the command. “I am very committed to this because I’d like that last operator that we lost to be the last one that we ever lose, in this fight or in the fight of the future,” Admiral William McRaven, who leads the Special Operations Command, says in the video.<br /><br />The program has attracted interest from dozens of mostly smaller firms, although <span class="ticker_wrap"><span itemscope="" itemtype="http://schema.org/Corporation"><span itemprop="name">Raytheon</span></span> (<a class="ticker" data-symbol="RTN" href="http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/snapshot/snapshot.asp?ticker=RTN">RTN</a>)</span> is one of the larger Pentagon contractors that’s expressed interest in Talos and similar efforts.
