Tonight is Bonfire night, the annual chance to celebrate (or mourn) the failure of Guy Fawkes and other members of the gunpowder plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. This morning, Comment is free staff fondly recalled the big bonfires of their youth, where the spirit of the occasion was very much in evidence. Has some of the fire gone out of Bonfire night? Many might think that Halloween has taken over as the autumnal celebration, and some have written that a slightly nannyish tone has crept into the event. George Monbiot says that traditional bonfires damage the environment. Have cuts stopped your local council from putting on a celebration tonight? Do you think that Bonfire night is still a relevant tradition in 2013? Will you light a Guy tonight? Tell us what today means to you.
