A rigorous new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine should finally put to rest any doubts about whether a <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/health/diets-dieting/mediterranean-diet-HEDI00008.topic" id="HEDI00008" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="Mediterranean Diet">Mediterranean diet</a> -- rich in olive oil or nuts as well as fish, with a glass of wine per day also allowed -- promotes better cardiovascular health than the way most of us eat. It does.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">That might not be surprising, but up to now, advice on the Mediterranean diet has been based on correlation: People in Mediterranean areas that tend to follow that way of eating experienced lower incidence of stroke and other cardiovascular problems. Could the difference have been genetic? Could people who ate that way also be doing other things that made the crucial difference? The new study, conducted in Spain, randomly assigned a large number of subjects to different eating styles, made sure they were following it and measured results -- not lab-test results but illness and death.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">But what about the long-standing battle between those who believe that a very <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/health/diets-dieting/low-fat-diet-HEDI000010.topic" id="HEDI000010" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="Low Fat Diet">low-fat diet</a> is the best way to fend off cardiac risk, and those who espouse a way of eating much higher in the so-called good fats? Should all of the people carefully counting their daily fat grams give up the effort and take a spoonful of medicine in the form of olive oil? (Or, as the study had it, four tablespoons a day -- close to 500 calories of fat before you've eaten a solid thing.) Here the situation is much more complicated.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">The study meant to compare the two. The control group was supposed to eat a <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/health/diets-dieting/low-fat-diet-HEDI000010.topic" id="HEDI000010" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="Low Fat Diet">low-fat diet</a>. The problem, as reported in the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/26/health/mediterranean-diet-can-cut-heart-disease-study-finds.html?pagewanted=all" style="color: #2262cc; text-decoration: none;">New York Times</a> and the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324338604578326160736614012.html?mod=googlenews_wsj" style="color: #2262cc; text-decoration: none;">Wall Street Journal,</a> was that those people barely reduced their fat intake, even after receiving additional coaching. That's why the <a href="http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1200303?query=featured_home&#t=articleResults" style="color: #2262cc; text-decoration: none;">article</a> words things this way:</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">"We designed a randomized trial to test the efficacy of two Mediterranean diets (one supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and another with nuts), as compared with a control diet (advice on a low-fat diet), on primary cardiovascular prevention."</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">The researchers could have made that clearer at the get-go: Receiving advice on a diet isn't the same as eating that way most days. So the actual comparison was between a Mediterranean diet and the standard way of eating among Spaniards (who apparently, in many ways, are not following a Mediterranean diet no matter what their geographical location happens to be).</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">What this study may have shown us about the difference between Mediterranean and low fat is that the former is easier to follow. There were no big problems getting subjects to ingest olive oil, wine and seafood. Low fat? Not so much.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">The believers in low-fat diets could legitimately argue that the control group received too little coaching and support for their way of eating. But there's also a reality that has to be taken into account. No matter what future research shows about the value of a low-fat or very low-fat diet, when it comes to improving public health, we might need not just a healthier diet but one that large numbers of people will find sustainable over a lifetime.</div></div></div>

28 in 28 #26: Beyond Zuccotti Park

The statement attempts to maintain the momentum that OWS had gained since taking over Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan on September 17 of the same year. But it also implies that the idea is more important than the physical occupation of (semi-)public space, and therefore the latter is not as important or not integral to the movement. Given that OWS is nowhere to be found in the news 15 months after the eviction, this would seem to indicate that physical presence in public space is really important after all. But even if OWS lies in wait, did those two short months have a lasting impact on how public spaces are seen and used? And what does the movement point to in the design and evolution of the city, particularly in regard to open and public spaces?<br /><br />These and many more questions are tackled by the numerous contributors to <a href="http://www.beyondzuccotti.org/"><i>Beyond Zuccotti Park</i></a>, a book and initiative that are a collaboration of the Center for Architecture, City College of New York School of Architecture, and Pratt Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment, with New Village Press and Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility. As the title indicates, the collection of essays is not about OWS; it's about the impact of OWS and the thinking about assembly and public space that it has sparked. Of course there are contributions that focus on those couple months in 2011, such as Alexander Cooper's (the designer of Zuccotti Park) analysis of various Occupation sites relative to public transit and Rick Bell's 20 common points among the Occupy "mini-cities." Most of the essays addressing OWS are put into the first section—Occupy! The next four sections attempt to categorize the remainder—Emplacing Equity and Social Justice, Reimagining Public Space, Public Space Over Time, and Responsive Change (the last is split into Public Sector Agents of Change and Designers and Developers as Agents of Change).<br /><br />If the book were limited to OWS and Zuccotti Park essays it would be much more honed but also a lot slimmer. As is, the topics are looser but the contributions greater and from a larger pool of voices, some of them quite well known. Their takes on public space and assembly could be read as recipes for making urban open spaces amenable for exercising democratic rights. It's certainly a goal that goes well beyond design; or more accurately, the context that design works within is much more charged and contested than in other realms of building and landscape. Everett Koop, the Ronald Reagan-appointed surgeon general who would go on to become a hero to AIDS activists, died yesterday in New Hampshire at the age of 96. Koop, who was both a pediatric surgeon and evangelical Christian, will be remembered for a number of things—his high-profile crusade against smoking; his role as <a href="http://www.lifealert.com/ceverettkoop.aspx" style="color: black; cursor: inherit; text-decoration: none;">Life Alert spokesman</a>—but the part of his legacy that will likely last the longest is his efforts to draw attention to the then-emerging AIDS epidemic. As the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/26/us/c-everett-koop-forceful-surgeon-general-dies-at-96.html?pagewanted=3&_r=1&hp&gwh=9884F10E3B8A1C52645F7B7B98B2A6DF" style="color: black; cursor: inherit; text-decoration: none;">New York Times</a> reminds us, AIDS had just been discovered in the United States when Koop was awaiting confirmation in 1981, but it would soon sweep the country with more than 100 cases reported in the weeks that followed:</div></div><div class="cpf-printOut-body-content" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Palatino,Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif'; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 20px; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;"><blockquote><div class="">[Koop] said he realized later that the Reagan administration had been slow to address the disease because the election had brought to power people who were antithetical to gay people, then thought to be its only victims. As the epidemic worsened, reaching drug addicts infected with contaminated needles and hemophiliacs who had received a contaminated blood-clotting factor, Reagan, in 1986, asked Dr. Koop to prepare a special report. Dr. Koop proceeded cautiously, knowing the report would be unpopular with many in the administration, with conservatives in Congress and with church groups opposed to homosexuality. While Koop personally opposed homosexuality and premarital sex, he nonetheless insisted, in the words of the <a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_OBIT_KOOP?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2013-02-25-17-06-49" style="color: black; cursor: inherit; text-decoration: none;">Associated Press</a>, that "Americans, especially young people, must not die because they were deprived of explicit information about how HIV was transmitted." That explicit information about homosexuality, anal sex, condoms, and intravenous drug use was all the more noteworthy because it came at a time, as the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/c-everett-koop-former-surgeon-general-dies-at-96/2013/02/25/be6cc52e-c5da-11df-94e1-c5afa35a9e59_story.html" style="color: black; cursor: inherit; text-decoration: none;">Washington Post</a> explains, "when almost nobody in the Reagan administration would even utter the word 'AIDS.' Despite some opposition from within the Reagan administration, Koop found a way to mail that pamphlet to all 107 million households in the country in 1988, making it the largest public health mailing ever. (For a little context, Magic Johnson's announcement that he had HIV wouldn't happen for three more years.)</div><div class="cpf-printOut-body-content" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Palatino,Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif'; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 20px; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">In hindsight, that brochure may not be perfect, but it represented the best available information the country had about AIDS at the time. Perhaps most importantly, it made sure to refute the notion that it was an epidemic that only some communities had to worry about. "The male homosexual population was the first in this country to feel the effects of the disease," Koop wrote matter-of-factly. "But in spite of what you may have heard, the number of heterosexual cases is growing.
