Microsoft's CEO short list falls short - CNET

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Microsoft has reportedly narrowed its CEO short list to about five people and all of them are far from perfect. It's unclear how they'll navigate the company.</p><br /><p>According to Reuters, Microsoft has the following candidates in mind to replace CEO Steve Ballmer. This list isn't much different from what Mary Jo Foley reported weeks ago. What this list shows -- if anything -- is that Microsoft isn't exactly thinking outside the box for leadership. Here's the short version:</p><br /><div style='width: 200px' class='cnet-image-div image-REGULAR float-right'><img alt="" class="cnet-image" height="246" src="http://asset2.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim2/2013/11/06/mulally-200x246.png" width="200"/><br /><p class='image-caption'>Alan Mulally</p><br /></div><br /><b>Ford Motor CEO Alan Mulally</b>. Mulally is by far the most seasoned executive in the running. If Mulally took over at Microsoft he can say he ran three American icon companies: Boeing, Ford, and Microsoft. That's quite a feat. But Mulally has a few trouble spots. First, he's not from the software industry. On one hand, that reality means he brings in fresh eyes. The downside is there might be a long learning curve. Mulally does know culture and large companies fairly well.<br /><p>Age could be another issue for Mulally, but that worry would be offset by experience for many. Mulally is a generation behind Chairman Bill Gates and Ballmer. He has reached the age in which the US federal government considers appropriate to receive retirement benefits and is three years past the mandatory retirement age of tech peer Intel.</p><br /><p>Perhaps the biggest issue is that Mulally, a friend of Ballmer's, may be locked into a device strategy many analysts and investors question. Would Mulally break up Microsoft if it made sense?</p><br /><p><b>Former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop.</b> If Elop was named Microsoft CEO, it would likely be viewed as a major disappointment. Maybe Elop wouldn't deserve that reaction, but perception is reality. Elop didn't save Nokia by any stretch. Elop, an alum of the software giant, represents more of the same for Microsoft and wouldn't be considered much of a visionary.</p><br /><p><b>Skype CEO Tony Bates.</b> Bates would be an interesting choice. With his Skype experience, Bates at least represents a more futuristic view of Microsoft. One issue is that Microsoft is a massive company and resembles a conglomerate in many respects. Could Bates manage something as large and complicated as Microsoft? Perhaps. Bates was head of Cisco's enterprise unit before joining Skype. I'd rate Bates as the best consensus pick for the Microsoft CEO gig.</p><br /><p><b>Satya Nadella, Microsoft's cloud and enterprise chief.</b> Nadella would be an interesting pick because his unit represents the future of Microsoft. Like Bates, it's unclear whether Nadella could manage the sprawling software giant. Nadella could bring a new vision to Microsoft and may not be locked into a device strategy. And because Nadella sits in the enterprise unit, he would know how it feels to be Microsoft's cash cow and used to fund projects formed due to Google and Apple envy. Nadella could be persuaded that a breakup makes sense.</p><br /><p><b>CSC CEO Mike Lawrie.</b> Lawrie is a turnaround artist, but he doesn't fit the bill with Microsoft. Simply put, Microsoft isn't flawed enough for a turnaround person. Microsoft is far from a wreck, and a turnaround artist would probably be frustrated. The risk of blowing up the company to try something new is too great. After all, Microsoft rakes in a lot of dough.</p><br /><p>In the end, Microsoft's short list is a bit flawed, but frankly it may not matter. Google barge mystery unfurled - San Francisco Chronicle

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>The barge portion of the Google barge mystery is only half the story - when completed, the full package is envisioned to be an "unprecedented artistic structure," sporting a dozen or so gigantic sails, to be moored for a month at a time at sites around the bay.</p><br /><p>Documents submitted to the Port of San Francisco show that the barge's creators have big plans for the bulky box now docked at Treasure Island.</p><br /><p>When it's done, the barge's backers say, the 50-foot-tall, 250-foot-long structure made of recycled shipping containers will be flanked by sails "reminiscent of fish fins, which will remind visitors that they are on a seaworthy vessel."</p><br /><p>"The structure will stand out," the team says, in what is probably an understatement.</p><br /><p>By and Large LLC, which submitted the barge documents, refers to the vessel as a "studio" and "temporary technology exhibit space." It says its goal is to "drive visitation to the waterfront."</p><br /><p>The barge's exhibit space, it says, will be for "local organizations to engage with guests and gain visibility in a unique way."</p><br /><p>"We envisioned this space with community in mind," By and Large says, "a surprising environment that is accessible to all and inspires conversation about how everything is connected - shorebirds, me, you, the sea, the fog and much more."</p><br /><p>Exactly who is By and Large? That's a little unclear, but it's reported to be firmly connected to Google. Some have noted that it looks like a play on the word "barge."</p><br /><p>Google has been largely closemouthed about its waterborne behemoth. After rumors circulated that it was going to be a showroom, a floating data center that could be used in the event of a natural disaster, or perhaps a big party boat, the company issued a statement Wednesday calling it an "interactive space where people can learn about new technology."</p><br /><p>Asked to comment Thursday on the planning documents, which we obtained from the port under the Freedom of Information Act, Google officials sent us the same brief statement they issued a day before.</p><br /><p>Whatever it is, the barge's backers expect it to draw 1,000 visitors a day as it sails from spot to spot around San Francisco Bay. Among the envisioned mooring sites are Piers 30-32 and other San Francisco docks, Fort Mason, Angel Island, Redwood City and Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond.</p><br /><p>The idea is to stay at each spot for a month. Eventually, the barge would sail off to San Diego and other West Coast ports.</p><br /><p>San Francisco Port spokeswoman <strong>Renee Dunn Martin</strong> said the pitch, which By and Large submitted in September, was "part of a preliminary proposal. They haven't come back to us with anything concrete."</p><br /><p>Talks appear to have stalled over the glacial permit-approval process before the Bay Conservation and Development Commission.</p><br /><p>As for the sails - By and Large says that in addition to reminding people they're on a boat, they would "provide shade and shelter to guests." They would be lowered in bad weather. One artist's rendering submitted to the port appears to show the sails lit up at night.</p><br /><p>"We believe this curious and visually stunning structure will be a welcome addition to the waterfront, an experience unlike any other," the proposal says.</p><br /><p>The design was drawn up by a pair of internationally known architectural firms: the San Francisco outfit Gensler, whose projects include Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport, and LOT-EK of New York.</p><br /><p>And don't even think about taking any souvenirs off the barge. It would be equipped with 50-plus security cameras.</p><br /><p>"The artistic structure combines innovative architecture with a bit of nautical whimsy," the proposal says, "creating a surprising environment that inspires conversation, community and 'a-ha' moments."</p><br /><p>From the looks of things, it certainly will.</p><br /><p class='dtlcomment'>San Francisco Chronicle columnists Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross appear Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. Then again, maybe even "spokes" is the wrong word, because Inori doesn't always say all that much.</p><br /><p>Inori is an anime character, created by animation studio CACANi on behalf of Microsoft Singapore for a special video that will screen at this year's Anime Festival Asia in Singapore this weekend.</p><br /><p>Inori's design is typical of many young female anime icons. She has big blue eyes, lots of curly hair, and she wears a suspiciously short blue dress. But the main difference between Inori and all of the other Sailor-Moon-alikes is that Inori's outfit includes conspicuously placed Microsoft and Internet Explorer logos, because Inori is, we are told, "an anime personification for Internet Explorer."</p><br /><p>That persona is more than skin-deep, too. Here's an early post from Inori's Facebook page – yes, she has a Facebook page – by way of introduction:</p><br /><blockquote><br /><p>When I was younger, I used to be a clumsy, slow and awkward girl.</p><br /><p>However, just like the story of ugly duckling, people told me that I have really matured and changed over the years. She has her cat, a couple of dolls, her computer ... and if you look carefully, you'll spot a Surface tablet, what looks like a Nokia phone, and even a W3C standards manual.</p><br /><p>Lest you think this is just some practical joke, or an elaborate work of fan-fiction by deranged IE users, think again. One shortcut to Inori's Facebook page is through the domain internetexplorertan.com. EXTREME WEATHER: Unseasonably Cold - Invasion Of Arctic Air May Set Stage For Eastern United States Snowstorm Next Week, As Cold, Wind To Sweep Through DC To NYC, Boston!

One is that a coastal low develops near the Carolinas and slides up the East Coast, bringing coastal rain, inland snow and gusty winds.<br /><br />Another possible option is that this low does not make the turn up the coast and slides out to sea instead. This track would favor a rain and snow mix for the central Appalachians with dry, cold conditions in New England.<br /><br />A third scenario depicts an unusually strong storm that moves up the coast then backs into the Northeast. This type of setup would lead to heavy snow well inland but rain in the big cities of the I-95 corridor.<br /><br />ABC 7 New York's Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg noted, "climatology does not favor major snow in along the I-95 corridor in mid-November. Snow is more likely in the higher ground north and west of the cities."<br /><br />Goldberg added that this era of improved weather forecasting technology is a double-edged sword. <p><br> Louis Cruises considers itself the expert in sailing around Greece and its islands. After all, the Eastern Mediterranean is home for the cruise line, which is based in Piraeus, the port for Athens, and the parent company was founded in Cyprus 78 years ago.</p> <p><br> So for 2014, Louis is refining its itineraries and onboard experience to offer what it considers the quintessential Greek experience. “When Americans come over, what are their expectations?” asks Kyriakos Anastassiadis, Louis Cruises’ CEO. “They want to come to Greece to experience the culture, the Greek cuisine and wines, the entertainment, and the natural beauty and variety of the islands. We are going to provide a real Greek experience and an immersion into Greek life.”</p> <p><br> For 2014, Louis is marketing two ships to North Americans — the 1,664-passenger Louis Olympia and the 1,200-passenger Louis Cristal. Both vessels were built in the early 1980s, the Olympia as the Song of America and the Cristal as a ferry named Viking Saga (it later operated as Leeward for Norwegian Cruise Line).</p> <p><br> Those two ships might not be the main attraction for some — although they are an attractive size and might be considered classics now — but the itineraries and ambience offered onboard are worth a much closer look.</p> <p><br> In 2014, the company is nearly doubling the number of ports it calls on to provide a mix of little-visited isles with such marquee destinations as Mykonos, Crete and Santorini. New destinations for 2014 are Samos, Milos, Syros, Kos, los, Symi and Chios in Greece, and Cesme and Bodrum in Turkey.</p> <p><br> “For the last 30 years, the ports in most destinations have remained the same,” Anastassiadis says. “As an industry we struggle very hard to get people to come back on our vessels – repeaters. So why would they come back to Greece on a cruise if there are no new places to visit? By providing new destinations, we give passengers the opportunity to come back with us and see something different. Greece has 3,000 islands. About 140 are inhabited, yet only six or eight have been visited. That leaves another 132 waiting to be discovered.”</p> <p><br> For those who want to explore Greek cuisine, Louis has revamped its menus to focus on the company’s Hellenic roots and the local Mediterranean diet, which is considered by many to be the healthiest in the world. Onboard menus now feature more fish, legumes, citrus, salads, vegetables, Greek olive oil and feta cheese. The food is seasoned with local herbs and spices, such as oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, as well as locally grown saffron from the small town of Krokos and mastic, which is often used in desserts.</p> <p><br> “The menus are predominantly Greek cuisine and they will also change with the seasons,” Anastassiadis says.</p> <p><br> Louis also is eager to work with more North American travel agents and has enhanced its online booking system. Agents earn 10 percent commission or more on the cruises, but also get 10 to 15 percent on shore excursions and pre-booked beverage packages.</p> <p><br> “We are giving travel agents the opportunity to sell everything we have,” Anastassiadis says. “It just makes the whole experience that much better if the clients leave home and already have their beverage package and shore excursions sorted out. We have a whole raft of packages available so travel agents can provide a complete service to these passengers.”</p> <p><br> In addition, gratuities will be included in the fares for 2014, equal to about $ 10 per day, per person. “It makes life easier for everyone and simplifies everything,” Anastassiadis says. “It’s included in the fare, but in the unlikely event someone doesn’t feel the service merits that gratuity, they have the choice to remove or reduce it. For instance, they can let you post stuff from the Web to your social media accounts or create to-do lists, etc.</p><br /><p>Sometimes a cloud service will offer an add-on and let you install it right from its own web page. This will be forbidden. However, enterprise departments will still be able to install add-ons through their own enterprise tools, Google said.</p><br /><p>This comes on top of a new feature Google added last week that will let you reset your browser completely, including wiping out all add-ons you've downloaded. That way, if you think you've downloaded an evil one, you can get rid of it.</p><br /><p>There's been some jaded comments across the Internet about the banned add-ons. Some people are saying that Google will ban add-ons it doesn't like, like ones that let people download YouTube videos. The Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is able to access all this, in addition to Android applications.</p><br /><p>One place the HDX has a significant advantage over the iPad Air is price. It costs $379. It jumps up to $479 if you add LTE 4G or more storage. The iPad Air starts at $499. Adding storage costs extra, as does LTE. The HDX costs less than the iPad Mini with Retina Display, too, which starts at $399 (on sale later this month).</p><br /><p>Another advantage is the Mayday function. With Mayday, a help desk is never more than a screen press away. Amazon is offering free, 24/7 video chats with support personnel, who will help users troubleshoot problems or explain how things work. Apple of course has the Genius Bar at its retail stores, but they require appointments and people have to actually leave their house to get the help they need.</p><br /><p>Early reviews of the HDX praised its great screen, epic battery life and light-and-comfortable design. CBS is the parent company of CNET. The documents show detailed plans for the barge-based structure, which CNET was first to connect to Google.</p><br /><p>CNET had previously requested information about the project from the Port of San Francisco, but was told the agency had none.</p><br /><p>According to the Chronicle, which received the documents via a Freedom of Information Act request, the structure's builder went into some details about what it was supposed to be:</p><br /><blockquote><br /><p>When it's done, the barge's backers say, the 50-foot-tall, 250-foot-long structure made of recycled shipping containers will be flanked by sails "reminiscent of fish fins, which will remind visitors that they are on a seaworthy vessel."</p><br /><p>"The structure will stand out," the team says, in what is probably an understatement.</p><br /><p>By and Large LLC, which submitted the barge documents, refers to the vessel as a "studio" and "temporary technology exhibit space." It says its goal is to "drive visitation to the waterfront."</p><br /><p>The barge's exhibit space, it says, will be for "local organizations to engage with guests and gain visibility in a unique way."</p><br /><p>"We envisioned this space with community in mind," By and Large says, "a surprising environment that is accessible to all and inspires conversation about how everything is connected -- shorebirds, me, you, the sea, the fog and much more."</p><br /></blockquote><br /><p>On Wednesday, Google spoke publicly for the first time about what has become known widely as "Google barge:" "Google Barge ... A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above," Google said in a statement. "Although it's still early days and things may change, we're exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology."</p><br /><p>The Chronicle's story doesn't address the ultimate purpose of a second Google barge that is currently located in Portland, Maine. But it is safe to assume that Google had very much the same goal in mind for that structure.</p><br /><p>Oddly, though Google has confirmed its connection to the project -- as have at least two public agencies, the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) and the National Park Service -- there is no mention of Google in the documents.</p><br /><p>Called the "San Francisco Studio" in the documents, the floating building was originally expected to be serving it finished purpose from November 2013 through November 2014. Apple to Offer iPhone 5S, 5C Repair in Stores: Report - eWeek

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Apple stores will soon receive special machines, says <em>9to5Mac</em>, enabling in-store iPhone repairs—and savings for Apple.</p><br />Apple stores will soon be able to perform some iPhone 5S and 5C repairs in-house, according to a Nov. 7 report from <em>9to5Mac</em>.Citing people with knowledge of the upcoming initiative, the report states that Apple will soon begin equipping its stores with "special machinery" for replacing the touch-screens on the 5S and 5C and, specifically, for calibrating the displays."The screen replacements cost $149 for each device, and this price point is significantly more affordable than the several-hundred dollars required to completely replace a device with a damaged/cracked screen," the report adds.It continues: "In addition to displays, Apple will have the capability to replace the volume buttons, vibrating motor, rear camera and speaker system on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. Apple Stores will be able to replace the conventional Home button on the iPhone 5C, but it does not appear that Apple will be able to conduct swaps for the Touch ID-based button on the iPhone 5S." Phones under the AppleCare warranty, should they be defective, will receive part replacements without charge. For iPhones not under warranty, there will be fees for part replacements. "For example, a battery replacement will cost $79," the report said. Repair site iFixit has for ages been calling on Apple to make its devices more repairable. It tore down the iPhone 5S Sept. 20 (it performed the teardown in Australia, to take advantage of the time difference) and gave it a "repairability" score of 6, down a point from the iPhone 5, mainly because it was filled with so much repair-hindering adhesive.iFixit was able to lift away the display after removing Apple's proprietary pentalobe screws with a special screwdriver, some careful "spudgering" (mashing a thin, plastic stick into the crack) and pulling with a suction cup. But it quickly discovered a "booby trap" that Apple employees will also need to negotiate: a cable connecting the TouchID sensor in the home button to the Lighting port assembly.If the <em>9to5Mac</em> report is correct and battery replacement is also an option, the machines face quite a feat. "Perhaps the 'S' in 5S stands for 'stuck,'" wrote iFixit in its teardown analysis, "as in, 'I hope you didn't want to replace your battery—you're going to be stuck with this one.'"Finally dislodging the battery, it realized Apple had replaced the adhesive in the iPhone 5 with "two huge white runways of adhesive" in the 5S.Still, iFixit is likely to applaud Apple's effort, whatever its motivation.Writing about the site's more recent teardown of the Apple iPad Air, which earned just a repairability score of just 2 out of a possible 10, iFixit Chief Information Architect Miro Djuric wrote that fixing hard-to-repair devices is expensive or impossible. He has repeatedly said he plans to adhere to his agreement to stay with Ford until the end of 2014.</p><br /><span id='midArticle_0'> </span><br /><p>But people familiar with the matter have previously said that Mulally is open to other opportunities and may leave Ford earlier if another job presents itself.</p><br /><span id='midArticle_1'> </span><br /><p>Elop ran Microsoft's business software division before jumping ship to Nokia in 2010. "The variety of devices coming to market thus far, and of the inconsistency of roles they're designed to fill in consumers' lives, can make it hard for the public to wrap its head around just what these devices are all about."</span> </p><br /><p><span name='intellitxt' id='intellitxt'><img alt="Samsung Galaxy Gear" border="0" class="right" src="http://www1.pcmag.com/media/images/398224-samsung-galaxy-gear.jpg?thumb=y"/> </span> </p><br /><p><span name='intellitxt' id='intellitxt'>Opinions about wearable tech are mixed, but Americans are "leaning slightly in the direction of skepticism," the poll found. Roughly half (49 percent) believe wearable tech is just a fad that won't become common. Moreover, 47 percent said wearable tech probably wouldn't be useful to their lives. As for aesthetics, 43 percent said wearable tech can be stylish while 41 percent disagreed.</span> </p><br /><p><span name='intellitxt' id='intellitxt'>Meanwhile, in terms of demographics, interest in wearable tech is strongest among 18-to-35 year olds, a category Harris calls "Echo Boomers," followed by 37-to-48 year olds, known as "Gen Xers." Sixty-three percent of Echo Boomers and 47 percent of Gen Xers are interested in owning such devices, the poll found. A number of users have complained of issues with Mail after upgrading to OS X 10.9 Mavericks, though the company has been mum on the upcoming fix. More specifically, Apple clarifies that the update "improves stability and compatibility with Gmail, and includes fixes for users with custom Gmail settings."</p><br /><p>The Mail update was first issued to AppleSeed members last week. At the time, sources said that along with Gmail compatibility, problems with Microsoft Exchange were also mentioned as an area of concern.</p><br /><p>Users have taken to Apple's Support Communities forum to air their concerns about Mavericks Mail's many issues, with one of the largest threads, pertaining to Gmail folder behavior, now at over 20,500 views.</p><br /><p>As with the AppleSeed version, Apple has not specified when the update will be made available for public consumption.</p><br /></div>

Findings of a recent study, using DNA analysis, suggest that many plant-based remedies on the market today may be made of cheap fillers, such as soy, rice, and wheat, or contain weeds or potentially harmful contaminants.</p> <p>Scientists from the University of Guelph in Ontario tested 44 popular herbal supplements (such as St. John’s wort and echinacea) that are sold by 12 different companies in Canada and the United States. They found that one-third of the supplements contained none of the plant extracts indicated on the product label. Fifty-nine percent were contaminated with plant species not listed on the ingredients list, including some that were considered toxic or allergy producing, as well as other potentially hazardous substances. Only two out of 12 companies sold supplements that were all completely genuine and free of plant substitution, fillers, or contaminants.</p> <p>More on Yahoo: 10 Surprising Dangers of Vitamins and Supplements</p> <p>Over the last 20 years, herbal supplements have become a $ 5 billion-a-year business in the United States alone. For scientists and consumer advocates who have been watching the booming industry—about 29,000 different products are available—the results aren’t a complete surprise. David Schardt, senior nutritionist for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, tells Yahoo Shine that previous studies have also shown that in an unregulated industry, supplements don’t always contain what they are supposed to have. He says, what is alarming about the new research is that, “only 2 out of 12 companies [tested] were manufacturing a quality product, while 10 out of 12 were shoddy.” He adds, “Its not impossible, but it may be hard for consumers to find quality products” at all.</p> <p>More on Yahoo: Counterfeit Medicines: The New Face of Organized Crime</p> <p>Most people assume that if their local pharmacy, health food store, or grocery store stocks a particular herbal supplement, it must be safe. But, unlike both prescription and over-the-counter drugs, which are strictly regulated, dietary supplements don’t have to be proven safe and effective to the Food and Drug Administration before hitting the market. While some harmful products, such as ephedra, have been banned, it can be years before the FDA receives enough complaints to take action. And adverse reactions are shockingly underreported—the FDA estimates that there are as many as 50,000 “adverse events”  involving dietary supplements a year, while fewer than 1,000 are officially recorded.</p> <p>Schardt says that when it comes to botanicals, quality control is difficult. The science of isolating active compounds is tricky, and growing and harvesting plants can introduce all sorts of contaminants. Indeed, a 2010 study of 40 herbal supplements by the Government Accountability Office found that 37 of them tested positive for hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and pesticides. He points out that the DNA testing methods used in this study could help the industry police itself better and produce a more reliable product.</p> <p>According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it’s wise to speak to your doctor before taking any herbal supplement. Even some popular ingredients, such as kava and comfrey, have been linked to liver damage. This is especially important for pregnant or nursing women or people suffering from chronic disease. Herbal supplements can interfere with prescribed medications or interact badly when taken in combination with other supplements. Because the study looked only at a sampling of products, they did not name specific brands.</p> <p>Resources are available for you to research herbal supplements on your own, until the industry begins to do a better job of manufacturing a safe and consistent product or the government imposes stricter standards. ConsumerLab.com is an independent laboratory that provides test results for vitamins and supplements by subscription.
