Do We Really Need Ohio?

No, not the fact that Indians, Cavaliers and Browns will all continue to suck for the next decade, but the Ohio Kidnapping Case! *insert dramatic music here* <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">I just can’t stop watching the coverage of the story because it is the craziest kidnapping story I can ever remember. I would also like to take this time to invite Mr. Charles Ramsey onto <a href="http://www.blogtalkradio.com/im-with-stupid" target="_blank">IWS Radio</a> sometime. He seems like a fun guy. While watching all of this, a few thoughts suddenly struck me. Like … <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Is Ohio really necessary? Do we really need that state anymore? Could Ohio have outlived its usefulness for America? <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Granted a few Ohioans have made very good contributions to America. People like Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, Jesse Owens and Phyllis Diller come to mind immediately. Unfortunately, Ohio also produced Charles Manson and Charles Keating, so it all balances out, right? It really seems as though, unlike the rest of America, Ohio’s best days are behind it. Hell, After Ohio produced presidents, statesmen and captains of industry back in the day, things got pretty slow. Dark days for the Buckeye State, my friends. Speaking of Buckeyes … OMG! We could totally live without THE Ohio State University and their obnoxious, delusional fans. You can’t tell me that America doesn’t become instantly better by getting rid of tOSU.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Did you know that Ohio actually went to war with Michigan once over TOLEDO? Seriously! They went to war to KEEP Toledo. That’s how whack Ohio is. I just don’t think American needs that kind of silliness anymore. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">My proposal is that we give Ohio to Canada. Think about it! We just gift Canada the entire state of Ohio as a gesture of goodwill and to further solidify the two country’s friendship. Canada gets both Cincinnati AND Cleveland. Both of those <strike>ghettos</strike> cities are way better than anything they have. Even though you have to give current (legal) Ohio residents the option of staying in America by moving to say, Morgantown, WV, Canada will still easily double its population, right? I mean, I haven’t run the numbers, but that seems right. AAAAAAND, Canada probably increases its number of black people by about 2,000% along with picking up a few Amish folks to boot! Diversity is a big deal to them.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Canada also adds TWO NFL teams, TWO MLB teams and an NBA team. You know they’ve been looking for a way to do that forever. They also get some farmland that isn’t frozen solid ten months out of the year. Most importantly Canada gets possession of the house that was used in “A Christmas Story” AND the Leg Lamp! <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">No way Canada turns all this down. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">American on the other hand gets to rid ourselves of Ohio and the problems that state keeps bringing us. No more will we have to spend four solid years listening to MSNBC’s Chuck Todd droning on and on and on about how Ohio is the “most important state in the electoral college” while ignoring the fact that Colorado, Nevada and Virginia are actually ahead of Ohio on the “tipping point states” list. That combined with eliminating John Kasich and John Boehner as political figures and getting rid of tOSU fans makes this the best deal we could ever make. Maybe even better than the Louisiana Purchase. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">I know there will be people out there who think Canada should probably pay us for Ohio. Or maybe Canada should swap Vancouver or possibly Windsor for Ohio. I say absolutely not. Besides, people who want compensation for Ohio forget that Canada has already given us something we can’t put a price tag on …. "They chose a model in which all psychiatric illnesses were represented as categories discontinuous with 'normal.' But this is totally wrong in a way they couldn't have imagined. So in fact what they produced was an absolute scientific nightmare. For years, health officials have told parents not to share utensils with their babies or clean their pacifiers by putting them in their mouths, arguing that the practice spreads harmful germs between parent and child. But new research may turn that thinking on its head.<br /><br><br /><br>In a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, scientists report that infants whose parents sucked on their pacifiers to clean them developed fewer allergies than children whose parents typically rinsed or boiled them. They also had lower rates of eczema, fewer signs of asthma and smaller amounts of a type of white blood cell that rises in response to allergies and other disorders.<br /><br><br /><br>The findings add to growing evidence that some degree of exposure to germs at an early age benefits children, and that microbial deprivation might backfire, preventing the immune system from developing a tolerance to trivial threats.<br /><br><br /><br>The study, carried out in Sweden, could not prove that the pacifiers laden with parents' saliva were the direct cause of the reduced allergies. The practice may be a marker for parents who are generally more relaxed about shielding their children from dirt and germs, said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases expert at Vanderbilt University who was not involved in the research.<br /><br><br /><br>"It's a very interesting study that adds to this idea that a certain kind of interaction with the microbial environment is actually a good thing for infants and children," he said. "I wonder if the parents that cleaned the pacifiers orally were just more accepting of the old saying that you've got to eat a peck of dirt. Maybe they just had a less 'disinfected' environment in their homes."<br /><br><br /><br>Studies show that the microbial world in which a child is reared plays a role in allergy development, seemingly from birth. Babies delivered vaginallyaccumulate markedly different bacteria on their skin and in their guts than babies delivered by Caesarean section, and that in turn has been linked in studies to a lower risk of hay fever, asthma and food allergies. But whether a mother who puts a child's pacifier in her mouth or feeds the child with her own spoon might be providing similar protection is something that had not been closely studied, said Dr. Bill Hesselmar, the lead author of the study.<br /><br><br /><br>In fact, health officials routinely discourage such habits, saying they promote tooth decay by transferring cavity-causing bacteria from a parent's mouth to the child's. In February, the New York City health department started a subway ad campaign warning parents of the risk. "Don't share utensils or bites of food with your baby," the ads say. "Use water, not your mouth, to clean off a pacifier."<br /><br><br /><br>In the new study, doctors at the University of Gothenburg and elsewhere followed a group of about 180 children from birth. The children were examined regularly by a pediatric allergist, and their parents were instructed to keep diaries recording details about food introduction, weaning and other significant events.<br /><br><br /><br>By the age of 18 months, about a quarter of the children had eczema, and 5 percent had asthma. Those whose parents reported at least occasionally cleaning their children's pacifiers by sucking them were significantly less likely to develop the conditions — particularly eczema — and blood tests showed that they had lower levels of a type of immune cell associated with allergies. Analyses of the children's saliva also showed patterns that suggested the practice had altered the kinds of microbes in their mouths.<br /><br><br /><br>The researchers then looked to see if the method of childbirth provided any additional protection.<br /><br><br /><br>It did. The children who were delivered through Caesarean section and whose pacifiers were rinsed or boiled had the highest prevalence of eczema, nearly 55 percent. Yesterday for breakfast we got bagels from Itsa Bagel in Ranelagh.  I got the Mountaineer - tomato, lettuce, chicken & ham with honey mustard mayo. It was so nice today.  I got out for two walks and I also cycled down to meet my sister for lunch.  <br /><br />I adore my bike it is an upright Dutch bike.  The brand is "Dutchie" and I bought it online from an English company.
