Doctor Who: How Norfolk man created Dalek and Tardis sounds

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>A broken-down Sunday school piano and the key to a mother's front door were the unlikely origins to unlocking one of the most recognisable sounds in Doctor Who history. But for Brian Hodgson, a former BBC Radiophonics Workshop sound engineer, these basic items were the starting point for creating the distinctive, unearthly, sound of a Tardis - the sometimes temperamental vehicle of the Time Lords. As Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary, Mr Hodgson, who now lives on the Norfolk Broads, remembers: 'It was quite difficult as everybody knew rockets went 'bang, whoosh' - but what does a time machine do?' 'It doesn't go up, it doesn't go down, it goes everywhere at once. The thing I had in my mind was that it should be coming and going, and very vague.' <img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71282000/jpg/_71282842_54561b3b-e794-44e2-81ac-9aa66931a5a3.jpg" width="600"/> Mr Hodgson, 75, joined the workshop in 1962 after working as an actor and stage manager. On how the Tardis should sound, he said: 'I don't know who thought of it, but we came up with the 'rending of the fabric of time and space'. I was in a cinema and in the interval I had a programme and I drew it - exactly how I wanted it to go together. 'I'd done a programme called The Survivors where we had to have the sound of a ship scraping on the rocks, and the piano sounds I'd used for that, very slowed down, seemed a good starting point. <img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71282000/jpg/_71282837_brianhodgson2_624.jpg" width="600"/> 'I got my bunch of keys out, I got my mum's front door key and scraped that up the strings. We did that several times on the bass strings on an old Sunday school piano that had been taken apart. 'So we took those and speeded them up, slowed them down and cut several of them together and started to add feedback to get that echoey sort of thing.' 'Great big bang' Mr Hodgson told BBC Radio Norfolk he remembers the Doctor Who team liked his sound of the Tardis. It had taken him three weeks to create, but it still wasn't quite right. 'They came to listen to it and said they liked it, but there was something missing - why hadn't I put a rising note in it? 'I said 'time machines don't go up, they go everywhere'. They said 'well we think it needs it'. So I put the rising note in it with loads of feedback and the Tardis was born. 'Unfortunately, I'd spent so much time on the sound of it taking off, when we were asked for it to land I only had three days to sort that out. So I literally played it backwards, again with loads of feedback on it, and put a great big bang on the end of it.' <img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71282000/jpg/_71282844_pianotardis.jpg" width="600"/> As the original sound effects creator on the programme, Mr Hodgson was also responsible for designing the dictatorial modulated tones of the Daleks, whose leader Davros was played by Norfolk's Terry Molloy for three seasons of the classic series. During his 10 years working at the workshop on Doctor Who, in addition to the Tardis, Mr Hodgson also created the sounds of invading Cybermen, the Dalek control room and the Time Lord courtroom. 'Dalek staccato' 'I'd done a voice treatment for a rather posh robot in a radio play called Sword From The Stars,' he said. 'I'd experimented with my own voice and a ring modulator and it seemed to work. So when the Dalek thing came up I thought the modulation thing will probably work as it will grate, but we needed an actor to do the voice, so we got Peter Hawkins in. <img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/71169000/jpg/_71169874_71169871.jpg" width="600"/> 'Peter came up with the typical Dalek staccato and I asked him to elongate all the vowels because you only hear the modulation on the vowels. 'If you modulated the consonants they disappear and you can't hear it - so he did it on all the vowels and that became the Dalek voice.' After the Daleks appeared in the series in 1963, Mr Hodgson asked producer Verity Lambert if they could have one for the workshop. He remembers she said that they could have one after the show ended. 'We never got it of course,' he said. 'The series had been renewed.' To launch the game, click on the play button in the center of the doodle, and select your doctor. The puzzle-platformer, which bears a passing resemblance to several classic games, will boot to life immediately. 'The thing is that [Doctor Who is] a Time Lord, a time traveller, so I really wanted to get the feeling across that you could travel to different eras,' Google doodle designer Matthew Cruickshank told the Guardian this week. 'I definitely didn't want you to just play one level and that is it, I love the idea of the Doctor being able zoom around the universe.' (And yes, doodle designer is Cruickshank's real, full-time job.) As the Guardian points out, the 'Whodle' comes after extensive lobbying from the Doctor Who fanbase, including an online petition that racked up 4,000 signatures. 'Doctor Who is a show that changed my life,' one petitioner noted a month ago. 'It not only has been a way to be entertained, but it also has been a way to connect with people. Some of my greatest friends were made because of a shared passion for Doctor Who.' The very first episode of Doctor Who premiered in November of 1963 on the BBC. The protagonist was played by British actress William Hartnell, who was to remain in the role for three years, until 1966. Hartnell's Doctor was old and a little grumpy; he sometimes supported his weight with an ebony walking stick. From the BBC synopsis of the pilot: Schoolteachers Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton become intrigued by one of their pupils, Susan Foreman, and visit her home address - a junkyard at 76 Totter's Lane - where they meet her grandfather, the Doctor. The Doctor and Susan are aliens who travel through time and space in their ship, TARDIS, which looks like an ordinary police box but actually houses a huge gleaming control room. Later, the Doctor and Susan, aided by Chesterton and Foreman, do battle with the malicious Daleks; they travel to France at the height of the Revolution, and to Mexico, where they visit with the Aztecs. Over the years, the hectic pace of the time-traveling stayed the same, but the hero changed quite a bit. In 1966, the First Doctor collapsed and returned, through a mysterious process, as the Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton. Troughton was replaced by Jon Pertwee; Pertwee by Tom Baker. In 1989, production on the program was officially suspended (although a less-than-totally successful movie did follow in 1996). For years, the Doctor Who franchise remained dormant, until BBC One revived the series in 2005, where it has remained ever since, to great critical and popular success. In its newest iteration, the mantle of Doctor has been donned by three separate doctors, perhaps the most beloved of which was the rubber-faced Christopher Eccleston. The 31-year-old actor Matt Smith currently plays the series' lead, although the BBC says he will end his tenure as Time Lord. His replacement? Peter Capaldi, a Scottish veteran of big-budget flicks such as 'World War Z.' 'It's been an honor to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell... But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go,' Mr. Smith said in June. In an appreciation on the Hero Complex blog in March, Robert Lloyd wrote that 'loss is the heart of the show' - the successive loss of one beloved character and the introduction of the next. '[I]t is a show about people who are meant to be together,' Lloyd concluded. 'And behind all the swashbuckling, the suspense, the horror and the fun, beats a tale of love and friendship and bonds that the farthest reaches of space and time cannot break.' </div>

And Ja'mie: Private School Girl is the latest Chris Lilley import that HBO has picked up, this time focusing on Lilley's least likeable character and proving the sad truth that a little bit of a purposefully annoying character goes a long way and a lot of that same character makes a half hour seem like half a century. Premieres Sunday, Nov. 24 at 10 p.m. ( Getting On) and 10:30 p.m. ( Ja'mie: Private School Girl) Stars Getting On: Laurie Metcalf, Alex Borstein, Niecy Nash, Mel Rodriguez Ja'mie: Private School Girl: Chris Lilley HBO has never been afraid to put on comedy series that aren't predictable ( Enlightened) or push the boundaries of one character's likability ( Curb Your Enthusiasm, Eastbound & Down). You could even say that HBO will put almost anything on as a comedy and hope that it will work. But the channel doesn't own a lot of blockbusters in the comedy genre. Curb has always been excellent, but there's no timetable for its return. Eastbound & Down is retiring. Veep and Girls are by far HBO's best offerings. If it can be said that HBO is willing to take a swing at just about anything, it should also be noted that making contact at a better percentage would also be nice. Its two latest offerings, premiering Sunday, are unlikely to help. Getting On is mostly a depressing and unfunny (which is more depressing) look at an eldercare facility, the people winding down their days ignominiously in said facility and a handful of people who work there. Based on the British series of the same name (which never aired in the U.S.), Getting On at once attempts to be an office comedy and at the same time a bleak look at what it means to be old and stuck in a mostly uncaring institution. Having watched the first three episodes (of only a six episode season), Getting On -- adapted by Big Love creators Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer -- never manages to nail what is very clearly a difficult tone to pull off. The comedy isn't particularly funny and the depressing nature of lives stalled out in eldercare purgatory makes the episodes drag out in a tediously slow fashion. Alex Borstein ( Family Guy, MadTV), plays Dawn, a longtime nurse in the field and one who fluctuates between understanding for and flimsy tolerance of the patients and of her lot at the facility. She's bringing along Didi ( Niecy Nash, Reno 911!), a newer nurse and the one presence on the show who seems real and thus is someone you'd actually want to follow. Didi is also a very sweet nurse and that attribute is a fine counterbalance to the underlying sadness that's all around her. If Getting On has one strand that I'd be willing to follow, it's finding out how long Didi can go in such a situation without turning colder or simply not being able to take it emotionally. PHOTOS: 'The Newsroom': Exclusive Photos of Aaron Sorkin and the HBO Cast Laurie Metcalf ( Roseanne, Toy Story, etc.) is Dr. Jenna James, whose disdain for the eldercare facility (the lowest part of the hospital totem pole) comes back to haunt her when a spat at the hospital finds her punished by getting sent back to oversee the eldercare group. We are meant to see in Dr. James the uncaring end of medicine as it pertains to the forgotten elderly, but Getting On doesn't even attempt to weave in the American health care situation in any meaningful way. Dr. James is just an odd bird who collects feces for a study she's hoping will make her seem more important (and the whole first-episode attempt at making elderly incontinence funny falls flat). Mel Rodriguez ( Enlisted, Community) joins the show in the second episode as the head nurse but quickly becomes another character that finds conflict almost immediately (none of the characters are given much chance to become fleshed out) and someone else it's hard to care about. Undoubtedly some people will think that Getting On is heroic or cutting edge for taking on the subject matter. But the fact is, at least in the American version, there's not only a lack of humor to the show that fails to offset its bleakness, but there's nothing in the bleakness that is making a larger point. You can see what Getting On was trying to get at, but mostly you just see it failing to get there. As opposed to Getting On, Chris Lilley has never had any problems manufacturing humor. HBO tapped his Australian series, Summer Heights High and Angry Boys, which both wonderfully showcased the Australian series creator, writer and star for an American audience. Lilley, who plays a bevy of disparate characters in his series -- like a manically creative kid putting on an entire show for the world -- returns this time with Ja'mie: Private School Girl, which takes his snotty, spoiled, mean and foul-mouthed character and gives her starring status and loads more screen time. That's the problem. Ja'mie is funnier in short, searing scenes. She was surrounded in Summer Heights High with tons of other great Lilley creations and popped from the screen when given the chance to be, well, rich and bitchy. But centering one of Lilley's most annoying characters in a series to ramble on incessantly robs the character of its past effectiveness and makes her -- and the series -- almost unbearable to watch. In this series, Ja'mie is back from her brief stay among the great unwashed and returned to the final year of queen bee status at upper crust Hillford Girls Grammar in Sydney, where she's surrounded herself with sycophants and sets out to torment everyone else while drowning in her own shallowness. Maybe a good idea on paper, but not in execution. You'd have to be the biggest of Ja'mie fans to want to watch her never stop talking for 30 minutes. That's not to say Ja'mie: Private School Girl is devoid of laughs. Of course not. Lilley is too good at what he does to not find the funny. But it worked so much more effectively when he spread himself around to disparate characters. It's not often that a TV show gets to celebrate its 50th anniversary-even The Simpsons is 25 years away from that milestone-so we can understand why, if you're not a fan, you might be feeling a little left out of all the parties, the references, and the fictional-character-related anxiety. So, while we're not by any means experts (we admit it-we've only really watched the reboot), we've prepared a comprehensive guide to hopping on the Whovian bandwagon at the last minute, even if it's just for one glorious day. All of reality is at stake as the Doctor's own dangerous past comes back to haunt him. Things To Know: Doctor Who chronicles the adventures of an alien who can travel anywhere in space and/or time. It premiered on November 23rd, 1963 on the BBC. It ran for 26 seasons until 1989. There was one film in 1996, and then the series was rebooted in 2005 with Russell T. Davies as the showrunner. Steven Moffat took over for Davies as showrunner in 2010. He also runs Sherlock. People both hate and love him. He's infuriating for a lot of the fans, and many just refer to him as 'Moffat,' often in anger. The Doctor is what the alien is called. He looks like a human, has two hearts and he's from the planet Gallifrey. Never ever call him Doctor Who. People will get mad. You can refer to different Doctors by their number in the sequence (1-12). He might have a name, but it's a big, big secret. The Doctor can regenerate, so he never actually dies. He just turns into a different person. Just know it's a thing, it has to do with some sort of war in between the eighth and ninth Doctors, and he's played by John Hurt. Usually it's a spunky young woman who acts as the audience stand-in, asking the important questions like 'Why?' and 'WTF?' There's been a lot of them over the past fifty years, but only two are confirmed to appear in the special: <img src="http://24.media.tumblr.com/760a7b9208f996c8685726f9887435b3/tumblr_mwhu4jvfju1r539fdo2_250.gif" width="600"/> Rose Tyler: She's played by Billie Piper. When we last saw her, she was left in an alternate dimension with a copy of Ten (Tennant). They're in love. She also makes soufflés. Important Villains: Daleks: Dome-shaped robot-things with a plunger and an eggbeater for arms. They yell 'exterminate' a lot. Clara possibly might have erased all knowledge of the Doctor from their memories, so they've forgotten how much they hate him for always foiling their evil plans. They shoot lasers, and they're super slow but somehow terrifying. The Cybermen: They are clunky and made of metal, and yet still really freak and scary. Writer Neil Gaiman gave them a shiny new backstory in season 7's 'Nightmare in Silver' that made them faster and way more dangerous. Zygons: The Zygons can shapeshift into pretty much any other being, but that being has to be kept alive. They were defeated by the Fourth Doctor at one point but are confirmed to be returning in the special. The Weeping Angels: They probably won't show up in the special, but we're including them because they're TERRIFYING, but also awesome. They're statues, and whenever you're not looking at them, even if you just blink, they can move around, and they can zap you back in time so you're dying by the time you're supposed to be living. 'The Name of the Doctor,' season 7, episode 13: This is the season 7 finale, so it's the last episode to air before the anniversary special. The Doctor visits his own grave, which contains his timeline and discovers both the reason why Clara shows up all throughout time, and a previously unseen regeneration of himself who apparently did something horrible. 'Blink,' season three, episode 10: This famous episode has nothing to do with the current storyline, but it's truly fantastic and stars Carey Mulligan as a girl who, while visiting a strange old house with her best friend, receives a letter from said best friend as an old lady, having apparently recently died. That doesn't make sense. Whatever. Just watch it. 'Human Nature' / 'The Family of Blood,' season 3, episodes 8-9: The Doctor becomes temporarily human in 1913 England in order to hide from some Time Lord-sensing evil aliens. Only Martha knows who he really is while he falls in love and lives the regular life the Doctor could never really live. Again, irrelevant, but heartbreaking. 'Asylum of the Daleks,' season 7, episode 1: Eleven and everyone's favorite married companions, Amy and Rory, get trapped on a planet full of old, rusty Daleks, and meet soufflé-baking Clara. This is Clara's first rather confusing appearance on the show. 'The Stolen Earth' / 'Journey's End,' season 4, episodes 12-13: One of David Tennant's last turns as the Doctor, this is quite a finale. Past companions come together along with the stars of two spin-offs. Rose and the Doctor-copy end up in their alternate universe, and Donna (the best) gets a heartbreaking ending. 'The Waters of Mars,' special, 2009: This special consistently lands on best episode lists. The Tenth Doctor encounters the first human colony on Mars, and tries to stop a virus that lives in water. 'The Snowmen,' special, 2012: This special marks Clara's second, equally confusing appearance, right after the Doctor's beloved Amy and Rory have been taken by the Weeping Angels. The Doctor's in mourning, but snowmen are coming to life and building themselves, so he's clearly got to snap out of it. 'Midnight,' season 4, episode 10: This has nothing to do with anything, but it's a fantastic episode nontheless, chronicling one of the few occasions when the Doctor has no idea what's going on, and is in danger of being defeated by simple humanity. Super creepy and brilliant! 'Gridlock,' season 3, episode 3: An L.A. cat person's nightmare: In this futuristic society, everyone literally lives in their cars. They can't go outside because it's so polluted they'll suffocate, and it takes about ten years to drive a mile because it's just wall-to-wall traffic. Also, there are cat people. Literal cat people. It turned out to be none other than JD Dorian Zach Braff, who was on his way to scale some rock walls and decided to enhance the photo with his epic mug. If every couple who took wedding photos smack in the middle of a busy street got photobombed by Zach Braff, I'd be totally on board with that dumb wedding trend. Braff confirmed it was in fact him, tweeting: This is one of my best photobombs ever: pic.twitter.com/LZS0TZE3JS - Zach Braff (@zachbraff) November 22, 2013 I really, inexplicably cannot stand Zach Braff, and this is causing me to have a lot of emotions. Of all the weird, overwrought bridal poses, the making out in a crowded intersection might be my least favorite (tied with the rest of them). Please stop taking pictures in the middle of crowded streets. People have places to go, like their job or the hospital for an emergency appendectomy, and it's bad enough when some tourists stake out the whole side walk to unroll the world's biggest map and locate a side street in a different borough. But nothing is worse than trying to navigate your way around a huge dress and two people making out. Please just go get married and be happy and stay out of my intersection. Same goes for you, Braff. An insider told Us Weekly magazine, 'He realized he needed help and is committed to his sobriety.' Earlier this month, the 'Gangster Squad' star was involved in a brawl with a bouncer and was also video taped yelling at a cab driver after allegedly rear-ending his vehicle at a fast food drive-through window. Back in January, Brolin was arrested for public intoxication. He paid $250 bail and did not have to appear in court, as he was not given a citation for the arrest. TMZ.com caught up with the actor on Nov. 3 and asked him if he had given up alcohol as a result of his behavior, to which he responded, 'Absolutely. It won't be happening again. That's it. Completely done.' It's been a tough year for the star. Brolin and his wife of eight years, Diane Lane, quietly parted ways in late 2012 and a rep for the couple announced in February that they were splitting up. Meanwhile, Brolin stars in the upcoming horror remake ' Oldboy' about a man who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. After his inexplicable release, he attempts to hunt down the individual who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment. </div>
