Gleanings from ISTE #2: Microsoft at ISTE 2013

The recipients would also</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"> join the Microsoft in Education newsletter and receive additional training resources.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">In my mind I can see the Partners in Learning Network becoming an exceptional resource for teachers around the world with great technology integration activities of every type freely available. <div style='font-style:italic;' class='uawbyline'>By Russ Howe</div><br /><br /> <div class='uawarticle'>It's a war which has raged on for the best part of ten years but, thanks to recent scientific research, today you will get a definite answer to the question: Kettlebells vs dumbbells - which method will give you the best results?<br /> <br /> If there is one thing which many people mistakenly do in gyms around the world, it is buying in to the false belief that one way of training is the best over any other method. This is particularly true with the two mentioned above. Many people are either on one side of the fence or the other. Optimal results can be achieved by combining these methods with lesser known techniques, such as yoga, suspension trainers and body weight exercises.<br /> <br /> However, recent scientific research looked into the kettlebell training style in direct comparison to free weight training in a bid to put an end to the arguments among fitness enthusiasts.<br /> <br /> The study followed a protocol where Group A would be using a 16 kilogram weight to perform a six week program of swings, accelerated swings and goblet squats in an attempt to boost vertical leap, power clean and squat strength levels.<br /> <br /> Group B, on the other hand, were made to follow a six week program using roughly 80% of their one repetition maximum on squat, power clean and high pulls using a barbell.<br /> <br /> After the six week course was over, the results were overwhelmingly in favor of free weight training. Barbell squats improved one rep max on squats by a huge 15%, whereas goblet squats only resulted in a 5% increase. Then the free weight group also enjoyed a 10% strength boost to their power clean and 4% vertical leap.<br /> <br /> The other group, meanwhile, only enjoyed a 5% increase in squat strength, with a 4% boost to their power clean and, somewhat surprisingly, only a 1% increase in their vertical leap strength. The last statistic in particular is quite interesting, given that this piece of kit is often touted as the superior method for increasing explosive movements, such as vertical leaping...<br /> <br /> So if the results of this study from California State University, Fullerton are to be used as evidence in ending this popular argument then free weights certainly won the war hands down.<br /> <br /> Of course, it would be very silly to take this study on face value and insist that you are only going to train with barbells and dumbbells from now on. Just because they were shown to be superior across the board for strength gains does not mean that any other form of training is useless. For example, body weight jump squats have been shown to recruit 40% more muscle fibers than barbell squats, does this mean you should never squat with a barbell again? No, of course not.<br /> <br /> The best way to develop a well rounded training program is to use aspects of different training methods until you find something which works for you. And as in the college ratings, there are no big surprises in the top hospital group: they are the big academic medical centers — the Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic. More to the point, even though you might well fly across the country for four years of schooling, you are far more likely to stay near your home for medical care.  No one's flying to Mayo in Minnesota to get inhalers for <a href="http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/asthma/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="In-depth reference and news articles about Asthma." class="meta-classifier" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">asthma</a>, even though it ranks No. 1 for pulmonary medicine.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">But American hospitals are a bit like restaurants, competing for your business (and donations). As such they go all out to promote their brand, even though hospitals and doctors are not permitted to advertise in many other countries.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">For American hospitals large and small, it clearly pays to advertise, particularly in these tough economic times and with the Affordable Care Act poised to throw tens of millions of newly insured patients into the market. But for patients the rankings and, especially, the subsequent promotions generally have limited benefit, experts say.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">"Nearly every hospital has a banner out front saying they're a 'top hospital' for something in some rating system," said Dr. Nicholas Osborne, a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Michigan. "Those ratings have become more important for hospital marketing than for actually helping patients find the best care."</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); ">What's more, Dr. Osborne compared the outcomes of two ranking programs — one by U.S. News and World Report and the other by Healthgrades — and found a "large discordance" in their results. "The two biggest rating systems come up with completely different lists," he said. And the magazine encourages hospitals to post its seal of approval. And while teams of academics and scores of for-profit companies are developing "quality" metrics to guide health care reform and to help patients shop for their care, it turns out that rating a hospital accurately is extremely complicated. And if a dozen hospitals in your area offer hip replacements, a search of regional rankings on the magazine's Web site will yield some useful statistics. The truth is it's needlessly over complicated. Today we'll be showing you the basic rules to help put you on the right track.<br /> <br /> Also, we'll avoid the type of scientific jargon which usually just alienates people and leaves them feeling confused!<br /> <br /> When I'm working in the gym as a fitness instructor I know that the majority of fitness trainers like to get way too in-depth with their clients. Usually you can see that the customer has lost interest and is merely nodding along or regretting that they asked the question in the first place. We don't feel the need to pat ourselves on the back for our knowledge of the human body, we're here to train you and if you cannot understand the instructions it's not going to work no matter how much we may know, right? We can't understand why some 'experts' do that, so the one thing we can guarantee here is that you will not lose track.<br /> <br /> When it comes to packing on lean muscle there are a few rules which will keep you in the right direction. <br /> <br /> The first step is to correct your sleeping patterns. Many people are shocked to discover that some of the rules to a bigger body don't even revolve around the gym. You can start by ensuring you get at least eight hours rest each night, the release of growth hormone will work wonders for your results.<br /> <br /> Supplementing the fact that your sleeping is now in perfect working order for gains in the gym you should now be looking to ensure your body is getting enough rest. You can't grow if your don't let it happen, after all. The next time you see somebody training every day and wondering why they aren't seeing results you'll know why it's happening. Don't let it happen to you.<br /> <br /> Now we hit the gym and the focus shifts to your training program. There is no way you're going to pack on lean size if your training plan isn't specific to your goal. That means ditching the lax approach to your routine and trying to get a solid plan together which allows you to concentrate on your goal, nothing else. Eight-to-twelve reps is best for hypertrophy, that's the golden rule.<br /> <br /> When it comes to the exercises, too, you should have your strength and size goal firmly in your mind as you write out your exercise program. By putting more emphasis on large compound movements you will enjoy greater results. This is because the larger exercises such as deadlift and squat recruit more muscle fibres than small isolation movements like lateral raises. Keep this in mind as you write your program out.<br /> <br /> Your diet will also play a key role. Remember it isn't just about adding size, you want to add the right kind of size. By adjusting your diet accordingly you can ensure that you not only grow but keep your gains lean. Most people who attempt to bulk up simply eat everything in sight. That's a good concept if you aren't bothered what type of 'massive' you achieve.<br /> <br /> The confusion surrounding how to build muscle can be answered with the simple steps in today's article. No personal trainer or college professor needed.
