So today was my first full day of non-Olympics stuff. I had a meeting in the morning. I had to eat a quick lunch at noon, but couldn't watch any live swimming because I had more meetings in the afternoon. Then in the evening I attended a barbeque and didn't get back till 9. So I really had to put the kibosh on Internet viewing all day since I didn't want to find out what had happened.<br /><br />So here's the first pro-NBC column you'll see this week: I was glad that all the events were tape-delayed. They didn't spoil anything for me when the evening program started, I got to watch everything I wanted to watch (including just one set of men's volleyball - what was up with that?!), and I didn't have anything spoiled. Now I could have done that had NBC aired them live on TV and I had DVRed it. But for what I'm dealing with right now and the tape-delay, I'll be okay with that.<br /><br />I did end up watching everything I would have normally watched had I had a work-at-home day, but at a faster pace. The water polo match between Great Britain and the US took me all of two minutes because I fast-forwarded through and kept track of the score. It was such a blowout anyway there wasn't a need to worry.<br /><br />My roundup today: track cycling (something new!), doubles and singles in whitewater, rowing of all lengths, volleyball, beach volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, and water polo. Track cycling was a lot of fun - though I was shocked that one of the races was merely a quick two-lap sprint - barely enough time to get to top speed, if it was me out there! I would love to be in that Velodrome though.<br /><br />Congrats to Gabby Douglas for winning all-around gold in women's gymnastics! She kept her performances solid, and her difficulty level (and her vault) propelled her away from Victoria Komova (and her three-step landing in the vault) of Russia. Good work.<br /><br />Tyler Clary also took gold in the 200 backstroke, which was so cool to watch. In that last 50 meters he just dominated Ryan Lochte. It's always nice to see a fresh face appear out of nowhere. In the last 5 Olympics, five different Americans have won the 200 back gold!<br /><br />As of right now, we are ahead of China in the medal count and tied in the gold medal count. C'mon, America, keep it up!!!<br /><br />And I am soooooooo excited for tomorrow. After seven days of swimming, TRACK AND FIELD finally starts! Swimming is great and all, but track and field always holds a special place in my heart, since that was something I actually competed in when I was in high school. I pray the bad weather holds off and we can get a few days straight of perfect weather.<br /><br /><br />Okay, I gotta get to bed. Enjoy the track, folks!

It appears that the Digital Water Pavilion (DWP), as the architects call it, is just about done. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/7701812200/" title="Digital Water Pavilion by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="Digital Water Pavilion" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8015/7701812200_da8623f856_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />[Looking north at halfway point along curved wall]<br /><br />The low, curving pavilion sits in the North Neighborhood beneath two residential towers; together  they comprise the last pieces in the whole BPC development. Facing east, overlooking a couple ball fields, is the curving wall -- 550 feet (167 meters) long. Curving walls are nothing new in BPC, but most of them (Riverhouse, Solaire, Visionaire, Ritz Carlton) derive their shape from the north-south roads that traverse the development (<a href="http://bpcparks.org/bpcp/map/map.php">map for reference</a>). The DWP's wall is more unprecedented, serving to shape the outdoor space, while also connecting points on the north and south (left and right in the below plan, respectively) through its gentle curve, rather than a straight line.<br /><br /><img alt="hma-bpc-plan.jpg" src="http://www.archidose.org/Blog/hma-bpc-plan.jpg" title="BPC Community Center and Chiba Golf Club plans" /><br />[Top: Digital Water Pavilion plan (<a href="http://www.hanrahanmeyers.com/np_bpccc.html">source</a>) | Bottom: Chiba Golf Club plan (<a href="http://morphopedia.com/projects/chiba-golf-club/gallery/drawings/1/">source</a>)] <br /><br />I'm a huge fans of curves like this, and immediately the DWP reminds me of Morphosis's unbuilt Chiba Golf Club, shown above for reference. I don't think hMa were necessarily influenced by this project, but the way that each plan uses a curve to embrace an expansive landscape points to the potential in wide, sweeping arcs. Just think of the <a href="http://berninisrome.com/Berninis_Rome/Colonnades.html">colonnades of St. Peter's Square</a> as a distant precedent.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/7701805094/" title="Digital Water Pavilion by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="Digital Water Pavilion" height="800" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7108/7701805094_d05cd90693_c.jpg" width="600" /></a><br />[The southernmost end of the 550-foot-long glass wall]<br /><br />As mentioned, the wall aligns with something beyond (behind us in the photo), namely the <a href="http://www.pscohen.com/arcade_canopy.html">public arcade</a> between Goldman Sachs and the Conrad Hotel. This alignment, and the way that hMa's design creates lower and upper walkways, provides north-south pedestrian paths that link with other parts of BPC. One block further south, the arcade designed by Preston Scott Cohen aligns with the interior arcade of the World Financial Center.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/archidose/7701811350/" title="Digital Water Pavilion by archidose, on Flickr"><img alt="Digital Water Pavilion" height="800" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7249/7701811350_5b9f110d82_c.jpg" width="600" /></a><br />[The northernmost end of the 550-foot-long glass wall]<br /><br />The north end does not align with something like the public arcade, but if one were to head right in the photo a few steps away is Teardrop Park, a rugged landscape between a number of earlier Northern Neighborhood towers. On the upper level (photo above), the benches face them and become a place for parents and fans to watch soccer and baseball. July Goals Recap

<p>Its been a while since <a href="http://weightloss-stories.blogspot.com/2012/07/updates.html">I last posted</a>. But don’t think that means I was slacking off! Nope, I buckled down and I’m proud of what I accomplished in the month of July. </p> <p>Lets recap those goals I set!</p> <p>1. workout 5 days/week – <font color="#ff0000">I didn’t quite make this goal. The week of July 23rd I got the stomach bug and was out of commission for 2 days & then we went to Chicago for 3 days and I only worked out once that week. <strong><u>BUT</u></strong>…the other 2 1/2  weeks I was right on track got in my workout 5 days/week!</font>  <p>2. attend every WW meeting – <font color="#ff0000">Check! Try 2 new recipes – <font color="#ff0000">Check! I tried two new recipes from emilybites.com {LOVE her blog!} – Cheesy Taco Pasta & Bubble Up Enchilada {with black beans}. Yes I’ve had Bubble Up enchiladas many a time, but never with black beans, so I’m counting that!</font>  <p align="left"><font color="#000000">4. weigh 167 by 7.31.12 {lose 9 lbs}</font> – <font color="#ff0000">Didn’t quite hit this goal, but I am SO proud to say that I did make it to 168.6 by the end of the month, so excited to say goodbye to those 170s. I know that losing 9 lbs in 3 1/2 weeks was a lofty goal. I feel that I pushed myself and I’m proud of those 7.4lbs!</font><font color="#ff0000"><img alt="Pinned Image" height="350" src="http://media-cdn.pinterest.com/upload/225461525064748820_3owuIGbw_c.jpg" style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" width="350"></font><font size="1">(source: </font><a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/225461525064748820/"><font size="1">pinterest</font></a><font size="1">)</font></p> <p>Remember my ultimate goal from my <a href="http://weightloss-stories.blogspot.com/2012/07/updates.html">“Updates” post</a> a few weeks ago? I want to be 150lbs by November 1st. So if you crunch the numbers from where I’m at now, that’s 13 weeks to lose 18.6lbs, average of 1.43lbs/week. Totally doable!</p> <p><u>I'm going to continue to push myself</u>.</p> <p>Until this last week I was just estimating my daily intake in my head(points/calories), but Sunday I started tracking EVERYTHING {app on my blackberry} and I can tell what a difference it’s made! Just goes to show<strong><u> tracking is key</u></strong>!</p> <p>Lastly, but certainly not least, I have to thank you guys for kind words and sweet comments on my post requesting your support! This blog world is an amazing tool & I’m so thankful for all of you!</p>

On September 12 in Portland, Oregon, filmmaker <a href="http://www.samgreen.to/">Sam Green</a> will be performing the "live documentary" <i>The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller</i>, accompanied by one of my favorite bands, <a href="http://www.yolatengo.com/">Yo La Tengo</a>. The performance <a href="http://www.sfmoma.org/exhib_events/events/2064">premiered in May at SFMOMA</a> and will be on the road throughout parts of 2012 and 2013. The <a href="http://www.pica.org/festival_detail_new.aspx?eventid=847">Portland date</a>, presented by PICA and Northwest Film Center, is the only one I know about right now. I'm hoping they make their way to the east coast.<br /><br />While the title of the documentary recalls T.S. Eliot's "<a href="http://www.bartleby.com/198/1.html/">The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock</a>," I'm reminded of Yo La Tengo's <a href="http://www.yolatengo.com/forsale/?wpsc-product=the-sounds-of-the-sounds-of-science-cd">live soundtracks</a> for Jean Painlevé's underwater, "<a href="http://www.criterion.com/films/1286-science-is-fiction-23-films-by-jean-painleve">utterly unclassifiable science films</a>." To date, I've only heard the music Yo La Tengo composed to accompany the visuals of undersea creatures, but the synthesis of music and visuals is certainly the point, something the band is branching into with more and more movie soundtracks and now Sam Green's quasi-film.
