The time where no cat mews and the night's dew rests quietly upon the ground. Before the tyranny of the noise and the barrage of notifications and matters of nonimportance glare at you with self important demands.</p> <h3>Hearing your purpose in the silence...</h3> <p>Yet, through the quiet, I can hear the whisper of the true priorities of this day speak to my heart and mind and settle my spirit. To demand that those among us who don't get the mornings and don't like them become morning people is silly. But I would be remiss if I didn't at least point out that much time and peace awaits you if you'll set that alarm earlier and get up before anyone else stirs. The younger your children are, the more you need this time alone. The more you work with kids, <strong>the more you need this time alone.</strong></p> <p>For, to me, truly, this time isn't time spent alone. It is time spent with my Maker and myself - two essential people with which I must get along for this life to amount to much besides the reorganization of dust.</p> <p><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-jTHJGcM9-Yk/Uj4U61Y_yfI/AAAAAAAENKo/c3MTIqpRC4U/s505/forest-nature-wallpaper.jpg" target="_blank" style="text-align: center; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="356" id="blogsy-1380019852698.693" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-jTHJGcM9-Yk/Uj4U61Y_yfI/AAAAAAAENKo/c3MTIqpRC4U/s500/forest-nature-wallpaper.jpg" width="500"></a></p> <p><strong>Light your fire before the darkness comes...</strong></p> <p>I cannot depend upon the completion of an ever <strong>growing task list </strong>to determine if I'm a woman of worth. The <strong>compliments</strong> of fellow human beings are not enough kindling to start and keep the fire in my heart going.</p> <p>No, my fire must be <strong>lit with a purpose </strong>that is struck deep within my soul as my calling combusts with the oxygen of a heart still enough to hold onto a vision that transcends the menial scratchings upon my planner pages. </p> <p>That is a fancy way to say that we can lose our vision of the forest as we wander among the trees and yet, for a teacher and a Mom - the dark forest is indeed very dark and very engulfing.</p> <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4eYP-CtTqJE/UgQFftukL2I/AAAAAAAAIXU/SdTeCrps1Fg/s2048/Hot%252520Air%252520Baloon%252520-02.jpg" target="_blank" style="text-align: center; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="357" id="blogsy-1380019852705.9353" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4eYP-CtTqJE/UgQFftukL2I/AAAAAAAAIXU/SdTeCrps1Fg/s500/Hot%252520Air%252520Baloon%252520-02.jpg" width="500"></a><h3>Seeing the view high above the trees...</h3> <p>The bigger trail can only be seen as I jump in the balloon of perspective in the early morning and look down upon the meanderings of life from far above. There, I'm able to refocus and see the bigger purpose in the trek I must walk that day. </p> <p>I'm able to have quiet conversations with Upper Management about the bats that flit around my mind to frighten me into a retreat from tasks worth doing. </p> <p>I'm able to see that I am a person of worth with a purpose despite the fact that the world and the burdens I carry often make me feel like the unappreciated pack mule at the rear who keeps being tossed yet another trinket to carry on the journey as proud horses toss their manes at the front of the entourage and eat from feedbags full of golden grain and honey.</p> <p><strong>The questions common to all humankind are often best asked in the quiet...</strong></p> <p>You don't have to be a teacher or parent to identify with the <strong>ponderings of purpose</strong>. These are things common to the human race. Questions of self worth and the ability to bear up under the load are questions common to us all. Yet, many of us bear burdens we were not meant to carry and look for meaning to be reflected in broken mirrors. </p> <p><strong>When is the last time you've listened to silence? </strong><span style="line-height: 1.3em;">The still ringing of hearing nothing but the turn of the page, the click of the keyboard, or the quiet muffled sound of a car driving past your house? </span></p> <p>Silence and the pursuit of quiet time alone has been one of the most defining practices of my life and this morning as I listened to the silence, I heard, in the quiet, the thought that perhaps there are others of you wishing to serve who are pouring from pitchers of water about to run dry lest you take a minute to dip more water from the well.</p> <p>This time is something you must create for yourself but my own time spent praying, reading, and journaling is the most important time of my own day. When I started doing this around age 27, it made a profound difference in my life and still does. </p> <p>Quiet time each morning <em>doesn't make me perfect,</em> it makes me <strong>purposeful</strong> and intentional about living a life that is too short to do everything. What every teacher ought to do... before it is too late

Do we have a clue?</p> <p>Even more, do we even say thank you?</p> <p>Not the generic 'thank you for all you do" but the more powerful:</p> <ul> <li>Thank you for your service.</li> <li>Thank you for keeping us safe.</li> <li>Thank you for responding even when it is scary or hard or upsetting.</li></ul> <p>There are public servants everywhere but few are paid as little and expected to do so much.</p> <h3>The Surprising truth about the offices of first responders</h3> <p>Yesterday as my students delivered and set up an appreciation for local law enforcement, they were met with gratitude. In two separate places they were told:</p> <blockquote><div>"People don't really want to come down here for good things, it is always the tough things we deal with."</div></blockquote> <h1>What every teacher ought to do at least once this year...</h1> <p>Many of you have been sharing on Twitter how you've had students create cards and do things to say "thank you." Wherever you live, whoever you are, if you teach - <strong>make sure you've scheduled one day and one activity this year to thank these heroes of our community.</strong> </p> <p>Too often we feel gratitude when their ears are cold and crisp uniforms are donned to lie in rest.</p> <p>I have one fine police officer in mind who gave his life in pursuit of a thief and was fatally shot.</p> <p>Did anyone ever come by before he died and say thank you? Did he feel the gratitude of a grateful community? </p> <p>Even more, did I say "thank you for your service?" I saw him the week before it happened and I know I didn't. I'm guilty. I didn't tell him thank you, even when he came in his dress blues to pick up his son from school. I knew he had a hard job working a tough part of town and I didn't say thank you. </p> <p>I can't go back -- but in his honor, I can say - never again. I will be grateful and lead students to be also. In his honor, I can ask all of you to do the same. </p> <p><strong>We best honor our fallen heroes by thanking their living brothers and sisters who carry on in the hard work at hand. You can do nothing about 9/11 and the heroes but use your sadness to inspire gratitude for the living.</strong></p> <h1>Gratitude can be taught and encouraged</h1> <p>In such a high burnout, low paying, highly emotional profession (sounds like teaching doesn't it?) - we should show our gratitude and inspire it in our students.</p> <p>In the US, September 21 is "National Thank a Police Officer Day" - while you shouldn't need an excuse - if 9/11 isn't enough then let that be your excuse. </p> <p>Whatever your country, you have people keeping you safe. Thank them. They deserve it.</p> <p><strong>Thank You Hymn</strong></p> <p>There are heroes among us serving every day in a quiet way.</p> <p>But if trouble is there, they are too, any time we ask - there's the blue</p> <p>If the worst happens and there's a fire - the thin red line will attack the pire</p> <p>Let's not wait to give their due, let's say thanks from me and you. </p> <h3>Make a date to appreciate</h3> <p>Will you get out your planner right now and plan something?</p> <p>And remember - gratitude is something we all impart. Whether it is being thankful for those in the community who serve or the lunchroom staff or janitors, or front office or teachers or parents or grandparents - being grateful for what is done for us daily is something we should impart to this generation. (We should be grateful for these precious children, they are a gift to our lives and our future.)</p> <p>Maybe some feel this generation are ungrateful because we're not teaching and fostering an environment of gratitude. </p> <p>Thank you to all the heroes among us, but as I continue to ponder in the afterglow of 9/11, I'm thankful because I know that there are many men and women here in Mitchell County and beyond who step in and do a hard job any time duty calls. </p> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: none;"> Remember your noble calling, teacher. Key tips to get along with angry colleagues

<p> I sit here at 7:11 watching Shadow and Krispy, the cats, eye each other in a circle wondering who will attack first. Oops. There they go. Krispy delivers a paw to the chest and Shadow lands a clean blow on the head. Now they are taking a moment to lick and they'll be back at it before the clock clicks another minute.</p> <p>I wonder why they fight. Shadow was saved from the jaws of four of the dogs at the farm almost a year a go. Shadow was a baby kitten and had no where to go and we know that Boots and Krispy are getting on up there in age. We bought them home on Easter weekend when my son who is at college was 8 or 9. So, although they look great, I guess these cats are getting on up there. Maybe even as old as me. He does little but sleep. I feel 18 most of the time except when I kneel beside them on my left knee and feel it crack.</p> <p>Shadow is lucky but Shadow is the new cat on the block competing for the same cushion and the favorite place on Kip's lap. Yet, here I am watching Shadow and Krispy and I wonder why they will always fight. </p> <p>I'll tell you why they always fight. <strong>They fight because Shadow starts it. Every single time.</strong></p> <p>Now. Innocent when the boss man is around but causing trouble as soon as his back is turned. We need to have a peace environment for the sake of the children.</td></tr></tbody></table> <p>There are some animals who fight as a way of life. There are also some humans who do it too. A good rick rolling temper-flaring red-seeing fight is what they do. They are like Shadow, always circling someone ready to pounce. Some for entertainment and others because they saw it at home and a thousand other reasons that psychologists will lecture you about. Why people fight is not a simple thing.</p> <p><strong>Just don't let this be you</strong>. You can' do anything about the other guy but you can control yourself. </p> <p><strong>Don't let it be in front of students</strong>.I hate it when adults tie up in front of kids. Whether it is a parent jumping on a teacher (which is not ever a good thing) or two teachers disagreeing - it should go outside or away.</p> <p>Kids are very black and white. I "like you" or I "don't like you." How many times do they come up to you and say "so and so isn't my friend any more."</p> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: none;"> </div> <p>They don't understand how adults can have a heated professional disagreement over a subject at work yet still enjoy eating lunch together. It isn't in what they do. </p> <p><strong>Avoid them if you can</strong>. I've just learned that some people are like Shadow and they are best avoided. I don't know why Slingshot Sally or Buckshot Bill are always armed and ready to go but you don't have to engage them. You don't have to ruin your day and take them on. </p> <p><strong>Learn to be wise when dealing with difficult people</strong>. It is frustrating that certain people can be so tough to deal with but there are reasons. Early in my career I listened to a tape series "Dealing with difficult people" and the cover of the book had two people shaking hands. He picks on the other cats relentlessly. There are some in schools who do this too.</td></tr></tbody></table> <p>This is a great picture for me because it reminds me that some people are just naturally difficult to shake hands with. If I want to be the person who enjoys this life, if I can learn to be firm but kind. If I can be wise about how I use my voice (Did you know if you lower your voice and make it quieter as you pause, that you can deescalate a conversation?)</p> <p><strong>Treat it like a game</strong>. I admit, I've done this before. I've seen how many days in a row I can go getting along with certain people. Realize that "getting along" and "giving in" are two different things. You have to stand up and be professional. I've just found that I have to realize my part in the whole matter. It doesn't escalate unless I let it escalate. I even cut a deal with my husband "If I don't tie up with so and so all week - I get a prize." Sounds silly but it works and lowers my blood pressure.</p> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: none;"> </div> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://instagram.com/p/ZWTAOwtR-W/" target="_blank" style=""><img alt="" class="alignnone" height="500" id="blogsy-1378723774644.06" src="http://distilleryimage10.s3.amazonaws.com/f5a4f1ccbdaa11e2976e22000a1fbc8d_7.jpg" width="500"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Because we love kids we want them to have a good learning environment, not a toxic one.</td></tr></tbody></table> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: none;"> </div> <p><strong>Stand up when it is necessary</strong>. If you're ALWAYS arguing with a difficult person, they won't ever know when it is little stuff or big stuff. There are times you will need to get angry. Some angry people are bullies. Sadly, I've found that many bullies only understand one thing: someone standing up to them in the way they are accustomed. There are times -- not as many as you might think -- when you need to stand up. When you need to stick up for yourself or something is going to be done in a way that isn't good for a child. I hate losing my temper and do it rarely but there are times to go in a private place and deal with it.</p> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: none;"> </div> <p><strong>Make sure it isn't you</strong>. It is also important to evaluate the circumstance. I give it the spouse test. If there is someone at work I'm always going home and mentioning to Kip - and he knows I'm struggling - then I have a problem. I ask myself if that person is "tying up" with other people. If they are known to be argumentative, then I relax and start working on strategies to get along. If they don't argue with many people but do with me -- then it is time to look at my own actions and behaviors. What am I doing to cause this?</p> <p>Power and personality differences are often two components in this. Some even have triggers because someone reminds them of someone else. We aren't Wall Street or the Capitol Building or a back street. We work in schools. We work with tomorrow's leaders. </p> <p>Sometimes kids don't hear what we say because our actions are yelling too loud.</p> <p>Think of their circumstances. Every year they are thrown together with 30 people they don't know. Hopefully there are a few they love but there are always kids they can't stand. They can't leave. They can't ask for a transfer (not usually.) They have no say over whether they'll be at that school or in that class. Absolutely none at all. They have to get along.</p> <p>All these kids have is a budding psyche that is just learning to get along with others and the examples they see every day. They are watching us. How do we get along? How do we argue? Is our school a good place to be? Do people smile at each other? Do they ever laugh? Do some teachers enjoy being together? Do we have interests outside school?</p> <h3>Toxic environment, Toxic school</h3> <p>When the environment is toxic, people know it but more importantly the kids know it. Sadly, they know it.</p> <p>When times get tough, many people struggle with staying positive. This spills over into work relationships and into family. We have among us some great people who might just be dealing with a raw deal. </p> <p>But we have among us an opportunity. I'm going to tell you what many of you tell the kids: "Why can't we just all get along?"</p> <p>The rule at our school is if kids get in a fight - they both go to the office. We can't have kids fighting in schools. </p> <p>Yet in some schools (so I hear) disagreements between colleagues, administration, and even parents and teachers is pretty toxic. We have a double standard. Kids fight and go to the office but two colleagues disagree publicly and often the principal is the last to know. Some principals even make the mistake of passing judgement before they hear both sides in adult arguments when they would never do so with kids.</p> <p>If your school or your building is toxic due to one or more people, I'm just asking you - for the love of kids - take steps to deal with the problem. Many relationships are not as simple as the advice I've given here. Toxic environments are bad for everyone. Toxic often starts at the top. If more school boards and administrators and teachers would realize that it is all about relationships then many schools would be better off. </p> <p>When school boards argue and force people to take sides on nonessential issues, it is not good for the school system. Some issues are important to take sides on but we need to realize that we should all be on the same side when it comes to the school itself. There are times to make decisions and move forward. It is always time to stand together and get along for the good of the school and the kids.</p> <p>If there is an adult who can't hold his or her temper and is always spouting off at people - perhaps that person is in a job ill suited to their temperament. </p> <p>My Aunt Chandra answered phones at the local public high school for more than 30 years - she never gets angry at anyone. She was a gift to that school because she was a soft first hello for anyone who called. They missed her when she left. When I was a manager in the business world, I made sure that the first voice people heard was pleasant, helpful, and informed -- it prevented having people yell at me as they traveled up the line. Just a kind, warm person greeting callers makes a huge difference.</p> <p>Let's love the kids. Let's think of them. Let's do what it takes to work together and get along - the future is counting on us. Not all schools have these problems but enough do that it is worth writing about. These are tough times for schools, teachers, and administrators but we have to cope how we can deal with tough issues without being tough hearted and argumentative. We have to be functional in how we disagree and to understand that when we're struggling to get along that it is often signs of deeper issues that need to be handled.</p> <p>OK, the cats are asleep and it is time to clean the kitchen. They happen in our lives. <br /><br /><h2>Case in Point...</h2>A few weeks a go, a teacher, <a href="https://twitter.com/swpax" target="_blank">Shawn White</a> contacted me through direct message on Twitter. He and I had exchanged a tweet on a Friday night. Then, I got up Saturday and started continuing to write a post I had started earlier in the week. This post turned into "<a href="http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2013/08/questioning-rigor.html" target="_blank">Questioning Rigor</a>" and was prompted by <a href="http://www.twitter.com/#/burgessdave" target="_blank">Dave Burgess</a>' ponderings in his book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0988217600/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0988217600&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwbrighc-20" id="static_txt_preview" style="background-color: white; color: #996633; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; text-align: center;" target="_blank">Teach Like a PIRATE</a>.<br /><br />Meanwhile, Shawn had messaged back and somehow the conversation had turned to this term of Rigor. Shawn <a href="http://swpax.us/685?utm_source=buffer&utm_campaign=Buffer&utm_content=bufferd3fec&utm_medium=twitter" target="_blank">feels that "vigor"</a> is a better word to use and expresses it well in his blog post and also at the beginning of this recording. I understand his argument.<br /><br />Well, our tweets, and my post were all sort of happening at the same time. He had texted me a link but I hadn't read it yet. I was offline writing and then posted my post. Shawn was offline when my post went live but got on later and after we had conversed a bit, heard I had written a post. At the time, he was a bit curious and perhaps a tad upset that I hadn't cited our conversation although later understood what happened.<br /><br />Fortunately, he reached out to me on Twitter DM. He reached out for two reasons.<br /><br /><br /><ul><li>First, to make sure that I knew that although he'd read Dave's book that his own post came out of his own thoughts and wasn't a knock off of what Dave said since Shawn hadn't gotten to that part of the book.<br /></li><li>Second, he just wanted to ask or let me know on the misunderstanding of his part as to my timing of the post just to get it off his chest.</li></ul><br /><br />I went back and looked at all the timings of the tweets and my post and realized that it was one of those things were two people really were thinking about the same thing at the same time. Similarly when Shawn pondered his own post - he knew that although it was in Dave's book that he had come up with what he said before he read that part of the book.<br /><h3>Yet the worries nag</h3>So, if Shawn and I both knew that we were OK in our timing and our motivations were true. Why should we do anything about it? Why should we be transparent?<br /><br />Honestly, there was no need to write this post. There was no need to have Shawn <a href="http://www.bamradionetwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1188:teaching-teachers-with-technology&catid=91:every-classroom-matters&Itemid=259" target="_blank">on my online show</a> to talk about Vigor and Rigor and also discuss what happens when we have misunderstandings on social media. EXCEPT.<br /><br />Except that this happens all the time. It happens. It happens even more now that social media is part of our lives.<br /><h3>A typical social media misunderstanding</h3>I'm not going to say it happens ALL THE TIME with me, but perhaps 2 or 3 times a year.<br /><br />Someone might tweet me a link and I don't have time to read it (I star them to <a href="http://www.getpocket.com/" target="_blank">Pocket</a> and sit down and read links in the evenings b/c my students are my focus at school.) But in the meantime, I write or share something that I've been thinking. Then, I get a message "but my link was on that too and you didn't cite me." Well, I didn't cite you because I hadn't read your post yet. It isn't a brushoff - it is just the reality of how all this stuff works that we can't pay attention to everything.<br /><h3>Some people make misunderstandings while others make friends</h3>So, what was different about this time? First of all, Shawn talked to me privately. It took 4-5 Dm's but he shared his thoughts and questions with me. That took a lot of courage and transparency to do that.<br /><br />I immediately thought to myself - <br /><blockquote>"whatever the outcome after I look back at what happened, I like this guy. He's courageous, transparent, and open and that is a trait of the kind of person who needs more attention in social media."</blockquote>Plus one for Shawn here. (OK, I know it is Twitter but go with me here. ;-)<br /><br />Then, as I looked, I figured out what happened (as I shared above) and was open back with him. By this time, he'd already realized that there was no intent and what had happened and wanted to move on. Yet, then it opened up discussions about being honest and transparent about this.<br />In my opinion, Shawn handled this very well. I hope my own behavior stacks up as well.<br /><h3>Being transparent to help others</h3>So, Shawn agreed to go <a href="http://www.bamradionetwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1188:teaching-teachers-with-technology&catid=91:every-classroom-matters&Itemid=259" target="_blank">on my online show</a>, <a href="http://www.bamradionetwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1188:teaching-teachers-with-technology&catid=91:every-classroom-matters&Itemid=259" target="_blank">Every Classroom Matters</a>, and we talked about the misunderstanding. <br /><br />Meanwhile, after I listened to the show, I was a bit bothered and realized that if I would have included Shawn's <a href="http://swpax.us/685?utm_source=buffer&utm_campaign=Buffer&utm_content=bufferd3fec&utm_medium=twitter" target="_blank">Vigor instead of Rigor </a>post, why not <a href="http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2013/08/questioning-rigor.html" target="_blank">go back </a>and add it anyway? If I see now that I would have included it, this is not a book, this is my blog and I can go back and add things as I see fit, so now, his post is at the top of the post where I would have put it had I read it in a different order anyway.<br /><h3>Work through misunderstandings and you might just make a friend</h3>Now, I have someone new I follow more closely. Shawn is really a cool person and a courageous educator. I'm glad that I've gotten to know him just a tad better and hope to meet him in person.<br />I'm also amazed and proud that he had the courage to openly talk with me about the misunderstanding. Most would just sweep it under and move on.<br /><br />Sometimes misunderstandings arise when no one even DOES anything but circumstances happen. But you don't have to let it go. You can talk about it. Here's how.<br /><h2>5 Ways to Reach out when you have a Social Media Misunderstanding</h2>What to do with you think you have hard feelings on social media:<br /><h4>1. Look at the person behind the misunderstanding.</h4>You know what kind of person they seem to be. Is this their persona. Would that person even care if such happened. Do they know you're there? If they haven't replied to you or had conversation, the likelihood is no. But, if they have followed you and engaged in conversation it is probably worth taking the next step.<br /><br />For example, I think <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.michaelhyatt.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Michael Hyatt">Michael Hyatt</a> is great and follow him on Twitter. But he doesn't know me from Abraham's goat. Honestly, I don't exist to him. I'm ok with that. I learn enough from him to make it worth my while.<br /><br />I'm not going to say that Michael doesn't have time for us "little people" but I will say that with all the dm's and people begging for his attention - besides the mention or two, I'm not that desperate to do what it takes to get his attention. I don't get into this idol worship sort of thing that seems to happen with the top bloggers. I learn a lot from his <a href="http://www.platformuniversity.com/" target="_blank">Platform University</a> and that is great. Should I get to shake his hand and say thank you in the right venue, I will. But I know that I'm small potatoes in his area of expertise. My audience and network is educators and teachers and it thrills me to no end to be trusted by many of the best of them.<br /><h4>2. Reach out if it is appropriate, privately if possible.</h4>I appreciated that Shawn DM (direct messaged) me. For those of you not familiar with Twitter, this is one of the best things about following cool people. You can send private messages to each other that often get read (if not overused.) I'm very careful to never use spambots to dm my followers and treasure that conduit by only using it for essential communication.<br /><br />If someone doesn't follow you, you can't dm them. You could reach out publicly and let them know you'd have a question not for public view and if they're savvy, they might follow you so you can be private. Honestly, though, if they won't follow you, it is likely they don't care what you have to say, so you can just move on from there.<br /><h4>3. Expect good intentions</h4>Some of the maddest things I've ever encountered is when people expect me to have bad intentions. When they actually think I'd try to do harm to another person. It is infuriating and a mischaracterization of who I am as a person.<br /><br />So, when you contact someone, do it in a way that lets them know without accusing or attributing bad intent. <br /><h4>4. Choose words wisely</h4>Word choice is important when you only have a few characters so ponder them. Be open to the fact you might have misunderstood. If you handle it well (like Shawn did) you might actually earn the respect of the person you're reaching out to.<br /><h4>5. You decide what to do about it</h4>Of course, if someone treats you like "who do you think you are" you decide if you'll unfollow. It is likely that they're a very busy person and had no idea. You can move on. But you make your choice.<br /><br />If this happens a lot with one person, you'll have to make a call. You can probably figure out if they're reading your work or if they're a spambot. Sometimes when you get copied a lot it is a compliment. <br /><h3>Finally, be hard to offend</h3>I've found that "thin skinned" easily offended people tend to look for offense.<br />As my friend <a class="g-profile" href="http://plus.google.com/109890903621985352592" target="_blank">+Lee Kolbert</a>  @<a href="http://www.twitter.com/teachakidd" target="_blank">teachakidd</a> says, <br /><blockquote>"People don't think about you nearly as much as you think about you."</blockquote>Others say it like this:<br /><blockquote>"If you wonder what others think about you. They don't."</blockquote>In a world of people who are thinking of themselves, think of others. If someone reaches out to you asking about a possible misunderstanding, don't brush them off, look at it. If you have something you really think it is a problem, reach out.<br /><br />Honestly, you might just make a friend. <br /><br />Remember your noble calling teacher, we teach with our actions much more than we teach with our words.<br /><h3>Speak out</h3>Have you ever had a misunderstanding on social media? A teacher's heart speaks on the first day of school

<p> My youngest has moved up into sixth grade. My how time flies. When I talked with him on Thursday about his week his first response was:</p> <blockquote><p>"I'm so happy. (This is why <strong>genius hour</strong> projects are so fantastic-- the hook is built in.)</p> <h3>Their like or dislike of your subject has a lot to do with their feelings about you</h3> <p>We're not teaching robots. We're working with humans. I've had students who say they aren't good with technology but have a <strong>good relationship with me</strong> and end up good with technology. It happens every year. </p> <p>Every child won't "love me" but I can promise you <strong>I'm going to do my best to love every child.</strong> I won't necessarily be the popular teacher but I will be <strong>memorable</strong> and <strong>one they thank</strong> when they come back. We will <strong>laugh</strong> and we will have fun. Their eyes will open wide with surprise when they realize <strong>how much they've learned.</strong></p> <h3>Back to School</h3> <p>It is the beginning of a new school year and a tough one for me (see my earlier posts) yet I believe in the first two days that my students know I'm interested in them and helping them reach their full potential. I've expressed an <strong>interest</strong> in their interests. I've shared with them <strong>how I teach</strong> and <strong>what I expect</strong> from them.</p> <p>I hope they feel about me like my son feels about his fine teachers in sixth grade. I hope they are <strong>open minded, excited,</strong> and that deep down they <strong>feel liked</strong> and perhaps even they already <strong>feel the love</strong> I have for them. I don't fake it - <em>I don't have to.</em> It is how I feel and how most good teachers feel about their kids.</p> <p>It is upon this feeling of mutual respect that we will build some powerful learning experiences. Bring it: The most important thing a teacher can bring to school

<p>My <strong>air conditioner has been broken</strong> all this week. They have ordered a part but we’re not sure if it is going to be here before school starts. If it is not, I’ll teach class on the stage rather than risk the computers expiring in the heat and have kids sweat because of the heat.</p> <h3>Sometimes things stink as we prepare for school.</h3> <p>This is less than ideal. OK. I’ll admit it - <strong>IT STINKS.</strong> Honestly, I stink too. </p> <p>But stinky stuff happens. It just does. I’m in gnat central here and it is 90 something outside and I’m opening my door to my room to cool it off. I’m wearing <strong>workout clothes</strong> that shed heat so I can sweat with as little soak as possible.</p> <h3>And then IT happened…</h3> <p><strong>My laptop died today</strong> - perhaps heat induced. Not sure.</p> <p>I connected the hard drive - threw everything in Dropbox and am letting it sync. <em><a href="http://www.dropbox.com">Dropbox</a> has saved me again.</em></p> <h3>When everyone has done all they can, you can still choose what you can</h3> <p>Yet. <strong>My students will be here Thursday.</strong> We’ve got lots to cover.</p> <p>Whether my first day is in my computer lab – out back – or in the outhouse - <strong>these kids have me and I’m bigger than this.</strong> My principal has done all he can do and everyone is doing what they can. <strong>What I can do is not add a sour attitude to an already heated situation.</strong> There’s nothing I can do but that.</p> <p>Problems are the canvas upon which I will paint a picture of a person who overcomes. </p> <p>Maybe that picture will inspire others to do the same. Maybe it will even help someone out there going through something. If so, this problem won’t be wasted.</p> <p>How about you and your problems? The worse the problems, the more dramatic the picture you paint.</p> <h3>We just have to make do with what we have.</h3> <p>Sometimes what we have is all we have… but a determination to do well and be amazing is all we need to get started. </p> <p>You can put a person with a <em>stinky attitude</em> in a <em>million dollar computer lab</em> and not get <em>peanuts</em> out of the students.</p> <p>You can put a <em>champion with a determination to teach</em> in a computer lab that cost <em>peanuts</em> and get a <em>million dollar learning experience</em> out of those students.</p> <p>It depends on <strong>what you bring.</strong> Are you bringing it?</p> <p>WE NEED MONEY. I’m not saying we don’t. I’m not making excuses for those who refuse to invest in our future.</p> <p>But when it is time for school to start and <strong>things don’t go just right </strong>- if I let it influence my relationship or attitude towards my students one teeny tiny bit - <strong>then I’m not bringing my best.</strong> </p> <p><strong>I’ve got to bring my good attitude if I hope to get students to the altitude they can achieve with me.</strong></p> <p>So… laptop or not… lab or not…I’m going to put on some clinical strength Secret Deodorant and lace up my tennis shoes… <strong>as long as I have me and my students somewhere on this campus – I’ve got enough to get us started.</strong> </p> <p>I’m bringing <strong>it.</strong> I’m bringing <strong>me.</strong> </p> <p>I’m bringing the only essential ingredient besides a <strong>firm grasp of content knowledge,</strong> <strong>pedagogy, and </strong>presentation finesse.** I’m bringing <strong>me</strong> and my <strong>determination to be an excellent teacher anyway.</strong></p> <p>I’m bringing <strong>it.</strong> I’m bringing <strong>me.</strong> </p> <p>You’ll rust before situations are ideal . They never are. They never will be. </p> <p>I’m bringing <strong>it.</strong> I’m bringing <strong>me.</strong> </p> <p>If your good attitude is dependent upon perfect situations then you’ll always have a bad one. I reject my human inclination to be crabby when things go wrong. I want to be more. These kids deserve it. Plus, I’ve got something FANTASTIC planned.</p> <p>I’m bringing <strong>it.</strong> I’m bringing <strong>me.</strong> </p> <p>There’s nothing exceptional about a person who’s cranky when their computer breaks and they are sweating profusely. There is something exceptional about a person who makes do and looks up. </p> <p>I’m bringing <strong>it.</strong> I’m bringing <strong>me.</strong> </p> <p>Kids and adults alike awe at exceptional. When you have awful problems – you have the opportunity to make people full of awe as they watch you overcome. </p> <p>They will expect me to bellyache when we meet on the stage Thursday if that A/C isn’t fixed. But I’m not - I’m going to wow them and make the most of that stage. IT isn’t going to be AW-ful it is going to be AWESOME! Oh yeah. I’m going to rock it. I’ve already got it planned. I’m going to use that stage and they are going to be amazed and never forget the first day of school this year. </p> <h3>I’m going to bring it</h3> <p>I’ll wear my workout clothes again tomorrow and sweat like an oldie for my last day of preplanning, but I’m going to hit this school year. I’m glad to be here. These are my students. I love them. I’m going to bring it… I’m going to bring what counts and that is me and nothing is going to stop me from teaching. Nothing. </p> <p>I’m bringing <strong>it.</strong> I’m bringing <strong>me.</strong> </p> <p>I’m not Polyanna. To be honest, I will admit to you that this attitude would not be possible without my time each morning on my knees taking these problems to <strong>Upper Management.</strong> But I also have to know that <strong>I am at the center of my Att-I-tude.</strong> </p> <p>If my attitude stinks, it is my fault. No one can MAKE me have a bad day - in all but the most horrific circumstances - <em>I can choose to have a bad day but no one can MAKE me have one but myself.</em></p> <p>This is a pep talk for me just as much as you… and right now I’m feeling better because I can see what my students see when they see a teacher who is able to make awesome out of awful. They see how to make it in a life full of problems. Because that’s what we’ve got down here… problems and lots of them. A great way to appreciate teachers for #backtoschool

<p> I'm drafting this on Monday night after our first day of preplanning at school. Today at lunch, our PTO had the nicest "teacher appreciation" luncheon. It was so nice. The PTO had large watering cans with zinnias and flowers from the yards of the PTO members. Orange and white are our school colors so the green was accented with white and orange. It was gorgeous. This list is one that PTO puts in a binder in the office. Things like "what is your favorite soda" and "what is your favorite snack" or "what is one simple thing you do to pamper yourself." We wrote this with the pen beside it which had our name "Westwood Wildcats" emblazoned on the side.</p> <p>On our birthdays, a person on the PTO is responsible to make a basket of our "likes." Because each one is personal, it makes us feel so loved. (The PTO even had a blizzard day and had students help them deliver each teacher's favorite DQ blizzard back in the spring. WE LOVED IT.)</p> <h3>The Theme of the Year</h3> <p>Our Board of Directors has adopted a vision statement for the year: "Moving Forward." They want all of us to set goals for how we want to move forward this year. What are a few goals we can set for improvements we want to make. The board is making goals and we will too. Imagine if everyone at a school tries to level up?</p> <p>Above our plates you can see a rolled up Tshirt with the theme on it tied in raffia. The Tshirt has the theme and our vision verse for the year. Scattered around were small circles with "We appreciate teachers" on them.</p> <h3>Little Messages</h3> <p>You can see the water bottles with the words "Teacher appreciation luncheon 2013" which were made with the sticker paper that you print off the printer. </p> <h3>Helping New Teachers Find a Place and Feel Included</h3> <p>Also notice that each teacher had a namecard and a place. I liked how they mixed us up. I got to sit by people and no one was left alone. New teachers were mixed among the tables. They thought seriously about placement. It really made it fun. They had orange and white and dots repeated. And it was DELICIOUS. This was my meal today.</p> <h3>We ate together at the same time</h3> <p>This was so nice because after we prayed everyone was able to open their boxes and eat right then. When you have long lines sometimes the first in the line are done before the last in the line. We actually enjoyed it and laughed so much. I wondered why I couldn't remember really eating with colleagues and I realized -- it was the line. Right now I'm shopping for fabric, purchasing colorful duct tape which I use on my walls. I'm running here and there working on those small details.</p> <p>The fact that someone would consider the details of a luncheon for us. I was almost in tears when I got done and realized the time that meal took. We had tablecloths and round tables. They thought of everything.</p> <p>Some of you would say this time was better spent on the kids. But I'm saying as a teacher, I'll remember this meal all year. The time and tenderness and attention to detail made me feel loved. It made me feel appreciated. </p> <p>I know it was a sacrifice. It meant so much more because it was a sacrifice. </p> <h3>But you don't have time!</h3> <p>Well, the people who did this meal include a doctor and the manager of an alligator farm. They have kids starting Thursday too. They took hours. </p> <p>This meal meant so much to me because it cost them so much -- not in money but in time and attention. They really cared.</p> <h3>What can you do?</h3> <p>I hope amidst these details that you'll glimpse and see a few nuggets of ideas.</p> <h3>What if you don't have a PTO like this?</h3> <p>There are times you won't have a PTO this incredible. I'm starting my 12th year. In those down years, we teachers got together and appreciated ourselves. We had potlucks and did things to appreciate each other. Sometimes a person would bring flavored coffee and other times we would plan something fun. </p> <p>Appreciate each other. That is a start. If you show each other respect, you'll see others start joining in.</p> <h3>Appreciate your students</h3> <p>What will it mean to your students when they see your attention to detail? What happens when they see you've thought of everything? What happens when they see your sacrifice and how much time it took you to plan?</p> <p>If teachers crave appreciation -- as grown adults -- how much more so does a young child need it?</p> <h3>Appreciation rolls forward</h3> <p>I will love my students no matter how people treat me. </p> <p>But I will love my school more and feel more deep loyalty as I feel love from people surrounding the school.</p> <p>Some people might just take words as meaning 'I care" but for me, show me. Students feel the same way.</p> <p>This has me thinking about the tiny details for my students. It has me thinking about how I can show more appreciation for my students. I'm so grateful for the experience that I want to pay it forward to others. Somehow sacrifice and appreciation multiplies itself greatly. These PTO representatives are blessing students through blessing us. All of us teachers felt the same way: cared for. People lingered and talked. We had a great time.</p> <p>These are the things that make a fine school into a family.</p> <p>I hope you will share pictures of great things that people do to appreciate teachers so that there are a lot of Back to School ideas floating around.</p> <p>Have a great start of your school year. Comparing Business to Teaching: A Wake up Call to the World

<p>Of all of the jobs I’ve had in my life, teaching takes the most energy and patience and is by far the hardest of what I’ve done. </p> <h3>When I was a businesswoman</h3> <p>When I was a businesswoman - <strong>I could fire employees who didn’t do their job</strong> – now, I have to work to <strong>motivate and teach every student</strong> even those who don’t want to be there. </p> <p>When I was a businesswoman - <strong>I could even fire customers</strong> if they caused a constant drain upon resources with complaining or wasted tasks; – as a teacher <strong>I work with all who come. </strong></p> <p>When I was a businesswoman - I had great <strong>autonomy</strong> - the buck stopped with me in terms of customer satisfaction - as a teacher there are so many things in the life of a child at my school from the lunchroom to the playground to the team and other teachers - all of these combine to make their experience - <strong>I only have control over my own classroom.</strong> </p> <p>When I was a businesswoman <strong>the world was a more forgiving place</strong> when I messed up. I could make mistakes in grammar or spelling without everyone pointing at me, accusing me of falling short. I could forget a date in history. Now, for some reason because I’m a teacher, <strong>I’m supposed to be perfect in knowledge</strong> – but I’m not.</p> <p>When I was a businesswoman, <strong>I had far less customer service to do.</strong> As a teacher, I’m getting a barrage of questions from parents and students and board members to handle with far less time to respond. I live “customer service” every moment because <strong>all I do is answer questions and serve.</strong></p> <p>When I was a businesswoman, <strong>I could actually close my door.</strong> I could be alone for more than 50 minutes at a time. I could plan my day and work my plan. If I had a big project I could get some quiet to do that. As a teacher, <strong>I have to do my big projects as I work with students or after school.</strong> I will be in the midst of something and a parent drops by for a chat and I’m stuck staying till 9pm. It is how it goes. People somehow think that teachers are here without schedules and that we work less time than the <em>real world</em> but I can attest to the fact that the hours are longer and people respect your time far less when you teach.</p> <p>When I was a businesswoman, <strong>I could leave work at the office and come home.</strong> I could go on vacation and leave someone in charge and expect not to receive many phone calls. (I was general manager for cellular one - so even back in 1994 I had a cell phone.) Now, as a teacher, except in the summer, my students still contact me. Not to bother me, but because I’m a 24/7 teacher. <strong>I’m always on the ball.</strong></p> <p>When I was a businesswoman, <strong>I could go out for lunch.</strong> Wow, I got an hour for lunch. Now, <strong>sometimes I’m lucky to get 5 minutes</strong> – if I have lunch duty. People who think teachers have shortened hours need to realize that we are pretty much on duty every moment of every day and that includes lunch.</p> <p>When I was a businesswoman, <strong>I could be a member</strong> of the Rotary club and president of the Chamber of Commerce. I could go to meetings where I learned about current events and had time to read the newspaper. I got to be around other adults and make a difference in the community. As a teacher, <strong>the school is my world.</strong> I have to dive into my online PLN for daily learning and open up a video to see current events. I have to master tricks to allow me to stay abreast of the world in minutes because my time to read the newspaper is gone. </p> <p>When I was a businesswoman, I worked with numbers and was <strong>paid by the numbers.</strong> As a very good businesswoman, I was able to earn whopping commissions for my sales. As a teacher, <strong>what I do is not quantifiable.</strong> While some say a test score could quantify what I do - I work with people. J Edwards Deming said that ‘the most important things are not measured and unmeasurable.’ and I agree. You can’t measure what I do except see what happens after time. People think you can actually measure all of learning in a number don’t know kids and don’t know learning. Many of them have test anxiety (like their parents) and a number on a piece of paper can’t summarize a kid even more than my weight can summarize my overall health. It can give you trends but not the full picture.</p> <p>When I was a businesswoman, if I did a good job long enough at my current job, <strong>I could get promoted</strong> - usually with a significant raise. As a teacher, <strong>there is no promotion</strong> - unless you want to move into administration and move away from kids. There is no merit increase- pretty much all teachers get the same % increase - even the sorry ones. About the only way I could get a big increase is to be a good coach and that certainly isn’t my calling. This is probably the hardest thing for me - in my years of business I was promoted every year or two consistently. Now, I have to reinvent myself every year. My promotions come in the form work I do on the side and with my students. My promotions are made when I level up my teaching and get more out of my students.</p> <p>When I was a businesswoman, <strong>there were awards you could win.</strong> When I was part of a team that implemented something new, we received notice for it or a commendation. Certificates were handed out for many things because people knew that building a resume is important and that excellence needs to be quantified. As a teacher, pretty much <strong>the only awards that are won are by the students</strong> - while this is fine - if you’re driven (like me) you miss having those things to shoot for. My reward comes in the thank you letter or note from parents. It comes in the pack of post it notes and pens that someone left me. I’m happy with a kind word at the store. No wonder teachers are desperate for attention. The only award for teachers at our school is STAR teacher and that is picked by a senior – since I teach up to 10th grade - I doubt that will happen. Plus, that is just by one student. I never knew until I became a teacher just how hard it is because of the silence of recognition opportunities. The silence about what good teachers do is deafening and it is something that society needs to address and every school should address if you want to keep the best teachers teaching. </p> <h3>But…</h3> <p>When I was a businesswoman, though, as much as I appreciated my employees and enjoyed making my “numbers” every month - there was something missing. My <em>passion</em> was there but not my <em>purpose.</em></p> <h4>When you hear the Siren song… you can’t turn back…</h4> <p>I didn’t really plan this path for me. It is kind of like the men who would hear Siren’s song and couldn’t for the life of them turn away. Except I’m not sailing towards the rocks, I’m sailing around them daily.</p> <h3>What I didn’t have as a businesswoman.</h3> <ul><li>But when I was a businesswoman, I didn’t have all of this life around me.</li><li>I didn’t laugh as much. I didn’t live as much.</li><li>I didn’t have customers coming back to thank me years later for what I’d done for them “back when.”</li><li>I didn’t have the freedom to talk about important things of life and every month I started over at zero with more numbers. I don’t teach numbers - I teach precious human beings. I love them.</li><li>I love teaching. It is my purpose. It isn’t my destiny it is my calling. When I’m there, I’m all there. Sure, there are drawbacks and things I don’t have. The world gives a whole lot more respect to me as a businesswoman than me as a teacher. But I don’t care.</li></ul> <h3>I choose to teach</h3> <p>I happily choose to be a teacher. This isn’t about receiving the world’s respect or having an easier time of it. It isn’t about having time alone or being able to close your door. It isn’t even about the money - although I have always had to work on the side to support “my teaching habit.” I also have a husband with a very good job and my family can afford to let me teach. <em>Not everyone can afford to do this. Some great teachers are leaving the profession and their calling because they can’t afford to sacrifice their families to teach.</em></p> <p>Teaching is about something I must do. </p> <p>It is more like Jeremiah 20:9 where Jeremiah says:</p> <blockquote><p>there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.</p></blockquote> <p>While he’s talking about holding in God’s name. I’m talking about teaching. I tried to hold back my love of teaching but I could not. It is who I am. It is what I must do. And for all the drawbacks, teaching – good teaching – is just plain old noble. It is. </p> <h3>When you feel the good things in life</h3> <p>There are times when you eat a very nice restaurant or end up in a very nice hotel or are on the prow of a ship with the wind in your hair where you say to yourself “Wow, this is living. This is amazing.” </p> <p>I do that just about every day in my classroom. There is something supremely noble and important. I feel it in every word I speak and action I inspire. What I do is very important. Every day is important in the life of a child. I just didn’t have that in the business world. </p> <h3>We can all join in and start appreciating good teaching.</h3> <p>While we need good businesswomen and men and some aren’t cut out for teaching – it is time to appreciate and elevate teaching for what it is – a calling, a passion a purpose. </p> <h3>What teachers DO</h3> <p>Good teachers aren’t slackers. They don’t choose not to be part of the community activities you have going. They do care about the community. </p> <p>I don’t do this job because I get (sigh) <em>summers off</em> or <em>holidays.</em> It takes the whole first week of summer just to feel like a human being again.</p> <p>I’ve never worked harder but been more fulfilled. Teachers aren’t perfect and we don’t always behave nobly, but good teachers care about kids. Teachers work 98% of time of other professions in 3/4 of the year. Our hours are very long during the week. </p> <h3>What society should DO with good teachers.</h3> <p>Shouldn’t the people that spend more time with kids than their parents be respected members of society? </p> <p>Do we let one or two employees not doing their job color our entire view of a company? The existence of bad teachers doesn’t diminish the importance of good ones. In fact, I’d argue that it makes good teachers even more important!</p> <p>I don’t have time to look back from the plow at when I was a business woman. In fact, I usually don’t go down this row because it can make me unhappy with how education organizes itself. </p> <p>But it is what it is. I pay the price in a major salary cut to do work with purpose. Some would say that doesn’t make me noble - it makes me stupid. I don’t care what you say - </p> <p>I care about living a life that means something. </p> <p>I care about doing my God given purpose. </p> <p>I care about the future of my city and state and world. </p> <p>I care about kids and helping their parents help them do their best.</p> <p>I care and thus, <strong>I teach.</strong></p> <p>I care about teaching and the future of kids and thus <strong>I write this blog</strong> to help others see the truth.</p> <p>I will pour myself out in service to the noblest of professions.</p> <p><strong>I sure hope some of my business colleagues will read this post and understand just what teachers do and give up in order to work with kids.</strong> You can start doing things to encourage and keep good teachers and it starts with giving respect and thanks to them.</p> <h3>What parents and business people can do.</h3> <p>I hope as the school year starts that parents and others will realize how important saying thank you to the teacher is – it is the ONLY - I repeat the ONLY “way to go” most teachers EVER get - no matter how good they are.</p> <p>I hope most of all that my students are ready for me. We’ve got special things planned and it all starts Thursday.</p> <h2>I start today!!</h2> <p>I don’t have much time to format this post and make it perfect because I’ve got to run to school. In fact, I’ll go ahead and publish it now and then add the photos later tonight. I hope people will read it anyway without the pretty pictures.</p> <p>Preplanning starts to day and I can’t wait. I’m ready! I’m psyched. I love this job even with its drawbacks - it is a great profession and I’m honored to be a teacher. It was great!</td></tr></tbody></table> <p>I can call you a car and ask you to sit in my garage but if you don't have 4 wheels and a motor, you're not going to take me anywhere. </p> <p>Every morning as I wake up to face my day, I start gearing up to teach. Speaking is pretty easy for me because preparing for a keynote feels a lot like preparing for class with one exception. Teenagers are a much tougher audience than you beautiful, wonderful educators out there.</p> <p>If you have too long of a gap or you're caught unprepared you might end up with a mess on your hands. </p> <h3>Do I upgrade and make it hard or keep it the same and go easy?</h3> <p>This year, I was faced with a decision. Do I stick with Windows 7 and the last version of office or upgrade to Office 2013? I had no choice. I have decided to keep my students on the leading bleeding edge of technology where it hurts. Often, it hurts me more than anything as I have to update my plans and create new tutorials. Everything ends up being new. It hurts, but it fits with my decision.</p> <p>My decision is to have, as far as I know it, one of the leading technology education programs in the world for high schoolers. We don't have the money to have such a program but really, as long as my computers are 4 years old or less, the only thing it costs me is myself. </p> <h3>Decisions. Decisions.</h3> <p>I have decided to teach. I decide to teach every single day.I teach with decisions. I teach with my life. I teach with my own willingness to put myself out there and learn new things even when I feel clueless.</p> <p>If teaching is a decision and a lifestyle, learning is too. Those precious children decide if they are going to learn from you. If you decide to teach, they have to decide to learn from you. </p> <p>But inherent in my decision to teach is my decision and commitment to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to get their attention. Sing, dance, swing from the rafters, turn off the lights and use lasers to teach about fiber optics. Whatever it takes. This, as you know, those of you rebels among our profession who are insanely committed to our craft - this takes everything we have. </p> <p>Teacherpreneurs like us are all out committed. We are committed with heart, soul, and mind and will not stop until the last bell rings on the last day of school.<br></p> <p>Deciding to teach doesn't mean we're perfect. It means that when we mess up and fall down that we get up and start over. It means that we don't quit. It means that the only failure we cannot accept is quitting because failure is a daily part of what happens in our classrooms.</p> <h3>We need admins to protect the teacher's heart</h3> <p>This is why anything that tries to kill the heart of a teacher should be watched for closely by administrators. Such tenacious commitment takes a lot of time, heart and energy. So, when you have others on staff who aren't in the classroom who make it extremely difficult for teachers -- Those who create hurdles.-- Those who are rude. --- Those who just try to be a pain because they can... you have to watch for that because with the amount of effort that it takes to make the decision and carry through with that decision to teach... we teachers don't have a lot of energy for other guff from non-classroom spaces.</p> <h3>Will you decide to teach?</h3> <p>Teaching is a decision. It takes all you have. But as anyone who has given their heart and soul to such a worthy cause will tell you, students give back far more than you could ever give. My heart and soul are overjoyed with the presence of my students.</p> <p>Teaching is a profession. Teaching is also a decision. A wish for every staff member of every school: to get it and get at it!

<p> With major jetlag, I sit here bleary eyed on the couch considering the fact that in 7 days I'll be back at school. The summer will be done and it will start again - the 12th year of teaching for me. </p> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Tpg9TJUy2-Y/T5BflDVMsKI/AAAAAAAWrMw/bO8frbxCqeI/s800/Locker%252520Systems%252520Inc.%252520-%252520Metal%252520Storage%252520Lockers%25252C%252520Employee%252520Lockers%25252C%252520School%252520Lockers.jpg" target="_blank" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" class="alignright" height="581" id="blogsy-1375112283128.4941" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Tpg9TJUy2-Y/T5BflDVMsKI/AAAAAAAWrMw/bO8frbxCqeI/s500/Locker%252520Systems%252520Inc.%252520-%252520Metal%252520Storage%252520Lockers%25252C%252520Employee%252520Lockers%25252C%252520School%252520Lockers.jpg" width="500"></a></div> <h3>Are you waiting for someone to fix it?</h3> <p>As I look at tweets, I see someone looking at the statistics on poverty saying, "The government isn't doing enough" and another person wanting someone to "fix education" and yet another bemoaning the fact that they don't have enough technology.</p> <p>Here's the thing. If you externalize the problems of the world and expect someone to come in miraculously and "fix" this or "do" that, you'll be waiting forever. </p> <p>You've got the classic superman complex. You're waiting for some super hero sized person or government to come in and fix the things that need fixing. You'll be waiting until your hair turns grey and your skin blows off your bones, my friends. Fixit doesn't happen. </p> <p>You've got problems too. You don't have enough time to do this or do that. You might be overweight, like me. You might wish you had one more planning period or one less student in that tough to manage third period class. Good luck getting any of those things to change. Fixit doesn't happen.</p> <h3>Do you get-it?</h3> <p>Let me tell you what does happen. Get-it happens. When start getting on my exercise equipment 45 minutes a day. When I get-it and attack my weight by eating healthy and working out then I'll get change. Wishing doesn't make things happen. Blaming just makes us bitter. When we get it and get it at - then, we see real change.</p> <p>When I get the fact that nonprofit organizations with far less money often do far more than the government to help combat poverty and join in supporting such organizations. When I get the fact that some employers are in fact owned by good people who also help combat poverty by taking steps to hire people who can't get jobs in other places and I support those organizations - then we can get at it. When we get-it that student "tech angels" and other organizations that give kids practical skills help them get summer employment now - we start looking for teachable, practical activities to interject into our schools.</p> <p>When I get-it that a child receiving a good education will do more to help that child stay out of poverty as an adult, and start doing everything I can to help that child - then we can get at it. </p> <h3>The Easy Way: It is not my problem - you fix it</h3> <p>You see, there are some educators taking the easy way out - the easiest ways to improve their test scores is for the lowest of the low to drop out. So, they sit back and let it happen and expect someone else to fix-it. <br></p> <h3>The Hard Way: I get it - it is my job to do what I can to combat tough problems.</h3> <p>But there are some educators who are frantically committed to the fact that they want to reach every child. </p> <p>They look problems in the face and yell into the storm: NOT ON MY WATCH! I've got these kids under my care and I'll get at it until I retire and even then, I'll spur other educators on to get at it. The only way to fail is to quit.</p> <p>They want no child to drop out. They will do what it takes to be relevant and reach every child -- they get it and want to do what it takes to get-it. They get at it every day and don't quit. It is hard and they are heroes. They work in all types of schools because every school has tough problems. Those problems might hide behind crisp uniforms and clean faces - but they are there just under the surface. If you teach, you know it too.</p> <h3>Meet the Front Lines</h3> <p>Educators are on the front line of just about every societal problem out there. When we get-it - when we realize just how important our job is, then we can get at these problems in our world.</p> <p>When the world out there finally gets it that we have to all be part of the solution. Teachers can't fix it, sometimes parents can't fix it either. We have societal issues that do start at home but go into the movies we watch, the food we eat, the entertainment we pursue, the schools we attend. All of these things are in a mix that causes poverty, crime, gluttony, thievery, abuse, murder and more. Ah, but none of us can fix it. None of us.</p> <h3>All we can do is get-it. </h3> <p>We can get that <strong>we each have a role and part to play and get-at</strong>-it. We can do our best with what we have. We cannot do everything but we can do something. </p> <p>But if we sit back and make excuses for why we're unimportant and leave it to someone else to "fixit" we will not be doing our part. We are failing because we are quitting and saying it is someone else's job.</p> <p>We all have a role to play. We are all shaping the future of our world, right now. Every classroom and teacher is an important part of this. Get it! Please! Get it!</p> <h3>Teachers dance with the future today.</h3> <p>Tomorrow's debates in Congress are born today in your classrooms. The eating habits of tomorrow are being formed in our lunchrooms now. Healthy habits are born in our bathrooms and PE classes today. The entertainment of tomorrow is first acted out on the stage in our auditoriums today. The sports heroes of tomorrow are getting dressed in your locker room right now. Tomorrow's congressman may be running for secretary of the Chess Club right now. </p> <p>If we want to impact the words, deeds, and actions of tomorrow - the school bell is ringing. May we all get the fact that we do have some very important work today. It may take 10 or 20 years to see the results, but some results of the future will show that many of you are faithful today. The sorry results will be seen from those educators who sat around with their feet up on their desks blaming society for the sorry state of things and wishing society would fixit without getting the fact that teachers play a very important role today.</p> <p>Educators. Teachers. Para professionals. Volunteers. Principals. Janitors. Coaches. Lunchroom staff. School nurses. Security staff. Front office administrators. School secretaries. GET IT. Whether school is about to start or you're already in the midst of it. GET THIS: YOUR JOB IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE YOU WORK WITH KIDS. Kids are important. They are our future. Please "get it" that unless you handle the problems and struggles in front of you today that no one else will fix it. Don't settle. Don't relax. Don't expect someone else to handle it. If a problem is in front of you. GET IT and get at solving it. Now. This is your job and the future is only as bright as you help make it to be. This is hard work but our future needs us to get how important our job is today. </p> <p>You can't do everything but you can do something. That something is usually the thing right in your face or under your nose at that moment. If more of us would get it and handle the problems right in front of us, it will be less problems for others to handle later. </p> <p>What a place every school would be if each staff member really GETS the importance of their job! Every one of you are important. Every one of you matters because every single precious child in our doors matters. Each one of them is precious and needs love and attention. It will only happen if people who work in schools start realizing that we aren't just here for the pay - we are here because we get to work with the future. Our job is important because kids are important. Do you get that? Do you really get it?</p> <p>I'm ready to start school. I get it - do you? If so, let's get-at-it together. Navigating the rough waters of teaching

It has always bothered me that I have nightmares about teaching. Always. Just before I have to go into the classroom, I have them...Full color, noise filled nightmares.<br /><br />I'm working with second graders last week at Vacation Bible School at church and last Sunday night I had another one of those dreams. My son and I went down<br />the Nantahala Falls the total WRONG way this time.<br />We didn't go under because we didn't stop padddling.<br />I righted us and we sailed on through but it was scary.<br />Teaching can be scary, especially if you don't respect<br />the power of the classroom and if you stop<br />rowing your own boat, you're in trouble.</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><h3>Why do we have teaching nightmares?</h3>I've talked with other teachers on my Facebook page about this and we all seem to have nightmares, but why?<br /><br />Why should we dream about failing as a teacher when it is something we just do?<br /><br />Shouldn't we be confident masters knowing we can navigate any waters?<br /><h3>Navigating an understanding of common teacher nightmares</h3>I hit on the answer as I asked myself this yesterday morning. My thoughts turned to white water rafting pros. These people are always dealing with water. They guide people down rivers and they enjoy the river themselves. But he went back in again with the<br />knowledge of what NOT to do.<br />When we mess up in the classroom one day,<br />we have to go back in and do it again and learn.<br />A mistake is only permanent if you don't learn from it.</span></td></tr></tbody></table><h3>The respect for something that comes with being a professional</h3>Last year were were on the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.022687,-83.50502&spn=1.0,1.0&q=35.022687,-83.50502%20(Nantahala%20River)&t=h" rel="geolocation" target="_blank" title="Nantahala River">Nantahala River</a> in our duckies (1 or 2 man inflatable self bailing rafts - kind of like a canoe) and there was a strainer in the river. A strainer is a tree across the river. It is very dangerous and life threatening.<br /><br />While some of those unwitting (unexperienced) dummies in the rafts said "let's just go over it" - the guides responded with a some what paling face:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"No, we have to wait until they cut it out." </blockquote><br />They know that strainers are very dangerous. Period. End of story. Stay away.<br /><br />We teachers are like those guides. When people from the local town come to speak in our classrooms, they don't realize that <b>they are on a guided tour</b>. They might think they are dipping their oar into teaching, and certainly, they are somewhat, but they aren't experiencing the wild rapids that teaching is - nothing near it. They are being guided by a professional.<br /><br />Surely river guides also have their own nightmares. The unexpected tree or rock - the river that shifted in the night. <br /><br />One rafting pro this summer said it to me like this<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"when you're a professional, you don't know the river, you respect the river." </blockquote>He acknowledged that he learned to navigate the river and that he was not its master. The only people unafraid of rivers are those who aren't professionals. </span><br /><span style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875);"><br /></span><span style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875);">Professionals who have "seen it all" know that the unexpected, unforeseen can happen to them too and things can go terribly wrong in a heartbeat.</span><br /><br /><h3><span style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875);">The truly unnavigable rapids</span></h3>When in South Africa, I met a woman who said she taught a class of 500 high school, inner city kids. She was their "teacher." It looks like my<br />son and I are going under. We are not. We are paddling<br />like crazy and going through the hole at the bottom<br />of this fall. Sometimes it looks like we're going under<br />in the classroom when we're navigating an especially<br />challenging unit and are doing PBL or inquiry based<br />unit. This is why it is hard to evaluate teacher<br />classrooms at a glance. If you looked at this picture without<br />the before and after, you'd think I was in trouble.<br />In fact, I was probably right between the "Ya" and "hoo!"</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br />So, this is what we teachers have nightmares about. We have nightmares about the unexpected. We have nightmares about the little situation that suddenly gets out of hand. Sometimes we have nightmares that we just aren't ready.<br /><h4>1. We can be taken by surprise</h4>Just as master river guides can suddenly be taken by surprise if they aren't paying attention - so can we. We, as teachers, know our position is precarious.<br /><br />We respect our classroom but we don't think that we own the kids in it or are their master. We know our place - an important one, for sure - is riding something far bigger than we are.<br /><h4>2. We cannot ever afford to stop pushing ahead</h4>Like a river guide, we know that it is fatal to stop paddling. If you stop paddling, the river takes you. If you put your feet up on your desk. If you stop teaching or stop trying - you're gone.<br /><br />Swept over the rapids, your room will descend into chaos -- unless you have methods and systems still in place and the students know what they are to do -- in which case, you didn't really stop paddling. You just have a system for the calm waters. <br /><h4>3. If a great guide is truly great, their presence seems almost unnecessary</h4>Like a river guide,we teachers love it when we see people who need us less and less. This year as we took the duckies down the river, the guides said they enjoyed the trip so much because we were good at what we did. No incidents because we all handled our own boats. <br /><br />We knew we needed the guide and followed him (like "duckies" thus the name) but we took care of our business. This is what happens when we have students who are following and rowing their own boat of learning in the direction we head. It is a fantastic experience.<br /><br />It might look like the teacher is doing nothing, but in truth, like the guide, the teacher is still everything.<br /><br />We would have gotten out of that river if our guide wasn't there. We knew if we followed him, we'd be safe.<br /><br />Like white water, the more challenging the work and the more independent each learner is expected to be, the more they need a good teacher.<br /><h4>4. I'm not physically afraid of my students but I have had a class that "got away from me." I made a false move and somehow I'm somewhere I don't want to be with this class -- either disorder, off track, or just not focused on the task at hand. T<br /><br />his is a horrible, awful feeling when you know it is has happened. It is an unspoken - most teachers pretend like they've never lost a class but most of us have.<br /><br />If you love teaching and want to do a good job, it is the worst feeling you'll ever have.<br /><br />Some teachers allow this to happen the last few weeks or God forbid - month of school. You can see them, feeding movie after movie to a class of kids who went on vacation months before. <br /><br />I don't want that. I always want to know I'm doing my job. I always want to be teaching and helping kids move ahead - sometimes it might be showing a movie with a purpose. <br /><br />You'll hear veteran teachers talk about this quietly --<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"so and so can't 'hold a classroom'"</blockquote> -- it simply means, that if they get in their boat, they drown and give up. Sometimes it shows because these teachers leave their classroom -- a lot.<br /><br />I was talking this with my nephew today and he said, "Aunt Vicki, I can't remember you ever leaving our class this year." I really try not to, although, when there is a network problem, sometimes it is unavoidable.<br /><br />Principals, I promise if you ask a veteran teacher who can't "hold a classroom" - they'll tell you exactly who they are. It is often the teachers who have kids in your office the most. Teachers who can't hold a classroom often look to external sources -- often times the principal - to do it for them.<br /><br />Front office discipline is no substitute for an undisciplined classroom where the teacher is completely irrelevant. I have to be careful not to "butt in" in these classrooms when I'm on the side fixing a computer but sometimes it is more than I can bear.<br /><h3>So, why do I have nightmares?</h3>Quite simply, it is because teaching depends on a lot more than me but it also depends a great deal on my tenacious determination to keep going. I must be there: knowledgeable, persistently paddling, teaching. But even if I am there, there are circumstances and things beyond me. <br /><br />I have no idea when a real boulder of a behavior problem will rear its open mouth trying to drag me down. I have no idea when the river may just be more than I can navigate. I sometimes don't spot undercurrents of a problem between students before we're right there in the midst of a mess.<br /><br />The classroom river is wild. It can be directed but often cannot be truly tamed. It can be guided but it cannot be controlled any more than a raging river.<br /><h3>Insight into the mind of why teachers quit</h3>In fact, many teachers are getting out, not because they are bad teachers, but because the waters of teaching in their classroom environment have become simply unnavigable. Experts won't go in the water, if they are afraid and feel it is impossible. They avoid the strainers at all costs.<br /><h3>Our mind and attitude is vital to our success and ability to keep going on</h3>Our attitude about our classrooms is the most important thing here. As expert teachers, if we feel that the classroom is unnavigable - it might be - and it can lead to mistakes as well as stress and fear that we're going under. It might even lead to the teacher quitting and no longer rowing her boat - which will lead to further failure.<br /><br />Yes, whitewater raft guides are one of the closest things to teaching I can think of. The nightmares are real. <br /><br />Plus, you have everyone who has ever gone down the river in a guided tour raft trip thinking that they can easily do it.<br /><br />I've heard that <b><span style="color: red;">teaching is the most impossible job everyone thinks they can do</span></b>. <br /><br />Get out there and paddle. Realize that the nightmares are just a normal part of teaching. If all the teachers conversing on my fanpage are to believed, we all have these nightmares. Accept and understand what these nightmares say about your feeling and our profession. I'll be having more of these dreams soon - I tend to have them the week before school starts. I think this illustration will help me deal with it and not psych myself out that I've had another nightmare. <br /><br />Heading into the rapids of another day with these beautiful second graders.
