He's known as the <i>other</i> Bush brother, the one who originally was expected to run for president before his older brother found himself in the right place at the right time. Both governors with the experience from that executive position, Jeb's name has been tossed around for a while as someone to run for president.<br /><br />However, general sentiment seemed to be that the country had soured on the Bush name. Father George H.W. as president 41, and brother George W. as president 43. Would America really want a Bush president 46?<br /><br />With the passing of time and circumstances, the time may be right, and the <i>Washington Post's</i> opinion writer Jennifer Rubin agrees. In her post earlier this week -- <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/wp/2013/11/20/what-about-jeb/" target="_blank">"What about Jeb?"</a> -- she made a notable argument in Jeb's favor:<br /><blockquote>George W. Bush has bounced back in popularity, and if the Dems can run a  Clinton there is no reason the GOP can’t run a Bush. Besides,  experienced leadership may be in style after we survive the next three  years. And to boot, GOP governors are looking like the party’s saviors  these days. Moreover, the passage of time has allowed certain issue to  fade and others to resolve themselves (e.g. the Bush tax cuts). Jeb Bush  understandably can say “times have changed” if he chooses not to adopt a  position his brother took sixteen years ago. (Yes, it’ll be 16  years between 43′s presidential run and when Republicans again start  trudging through Iowa and New Hampshire.)<br />...<br />I have no idea if he will run. But I am more convinced that he could and should. He’s got a lot to tell the GOP voters.</blockquote>Run, Jeb, run. He may find he has more supporters than he realizes.

My sister, a member of the George W. Bush administration, was at work in the White House that day. If Flight 93 had hit Washington as had happened in New York City and Arlington's Pentagon, our family could have been one of the many mourning a lost one.<br /><br />On the tenth anniversary of that tragic day, the crash site outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania, <a href="http://www.nps.gov/flni/planyourvisit/september-11-2011-weekend.htm">was formally dedicated</a> as a permanent reminder of the courage and spirit of the Flight 93 heroes. President George W. Bush, in office only nine months when 9/11 happened, unexpectedly became a wartime president that day with a determination to protect the American people. He and Mrs. Bush attended the 2011 commemorative events, met with the families, and took part in the ceremony.<br /><br /><a href="http://swacgirl.blogspot.com/2011/09/remembering-passengers-and-crew-of.html">Forty extraordinary Americans</a> ... my family will forever be grateful to the men and women of Flight 93 and their families for the heroism and sacrifice made that day.<br /><br />Flight 93 had <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/national/911/index.html">heroes</a> on board....<br /><br /><b>Todd Beamer - "Let's roll!"</b><br />The 32-year-old Oracle Corp. account manager from Cranbury, N.J., was believed to have helped lead a passenger attack on Flight 93 hijackers that prevented the jet from reaching its target, possibly the White House. Beamer spoke to a GTE operator on the plane's phone. His final words -- "Are you guys ready? Let's roll!" -- have become a rallying cry for the war against terrorism. Beamer and his wife, Lisa, had two sons. His daughter, Morgan, was born in January of 2002. Beamer played baseball and basketball in college and loved coaching youth sports. President Bush, in an address to the nation, praised Beamer as "an exceptional man." Today, the Todd M. Beamer Foundation aims to help kids deal with trauma and learn how to make choices.<br /><br /><b>Thomas E. Burnett Jr. </b><br />Burnett called his wife, Deena, to tell her about the Flight 93 hijacking and said he and other passengers were "going to do something about it." Burnett, 38, of San Ramon, Calif., was senior vice president and chief operating officer of Thoratec Corp., a medical research and development company. His wife and three daughters moved to Arkansas afterwards to be closer to her parents. The new Thomas Burnett Family Foundation plans to provide endowments for children's bereavement camps and leadership scholarships at selected universities.<br /><br /><b>Jeremy Glick </b><br />Glick called his wife, Lyz, after terrorists took over Flight 93. She patched the call to a 911 dispatcher, who told Glick about earlier attacks in New York. Glick told his wife some passengers had taken a vote, and "We're going to rush the hijackers." Glick, 31, of West Milford, N.J., had been a collegiate judo champion at the University of Rochester. His older sister, Jennifer, is president of <i>Jeremy's Heroes</i> foundation which is devoted to helping people build character through sports. He had broken his arm in the fall but didn't realize it at the time.<br /><br />Reporter John Hoke picks it up from there:<br /><blockquote><i>The tour included a boat ride to a nearby oyster  ground. Springston said that when he jumped into the boat, he stumbled  and reached out with his left arm to catch himself. </i><br /><i><br /></i><i>“He landed kind of funny,” said Todd P. Haymore, Virginia secretary of agriculture. “The governor caught him.”</i></blockquote>Even though his arm was hurting, Springston carried on with his interview of McDonnell. It was while reviewing those notes that he fainted and crumpled onto the floor of the boat and, when he came to, the Governor was leaning over and tending to him until EMTs arrived to take him to Rappahannock Hospital where the broken arm was discovered and treated.<br /><blockquote><i>Springston said the governor called him at home Wednesday evening to see how he was doing.</i><br /><i><br /></i><i>“I’m just glad Rex is doing alright,” McDonnell  said in an email. “That was a frightening moment for everyone. It did  give me a chance to use some of my old Army medical skills, but I think  we both would have preferred to not have had that opportunity.”</i></blockquote>It's nice to see a human interest story and a <a href="http://bearingdrift.com/2013/08/15/bob-mcdonnell-isnt-in-the-washington-post-today/">break from the negativity</a>. This humorous, light-hearted <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJbUXw87j0A">ABC News interview</a> that was taped after the President and Mrs. Bush returned from their African trip shows the genuine, witty, caring personality of #43, something the other side of the political aisle overlooked in their continual bashing of him during his eight years in the White House.<br /><br />Because of GWB's gracious nature, and my observation of years of abuse from his political enemies, I have tempered my own public criticism of President Barack Obama, realizing the hurt it causes not only to the Obama family but to his supporters. Too bad the extremists on all sides of the aisle can't tone down the rhetoric and try to work together.<br /><br />Robin Beres's article in Sunday's Richmond Times-Dispatch, <a href="http://www.timesdispatch.com/opinion/our-opinion/columnists-blogs/robin-beres/the-expanding-legacy-of-george-w-bush/article_b2875325-1bee-520c-879c-2fe7451d64a5.html">"The expanding legacy of George W. Bush,"</a> touched on Bush's just-completed humanitarian trip to Africa, his continued involvement with the Wounded Warrior Project, and his overall giving-back to America during his retirement years:<br /><blockquote>In an interview with CNN on July 1, Bush was questioned about the Obama administration and accusations about the White House’s invasions into Americans’ privacy. But, as ever, he refused to criticize Obama. “I don’t think it does any good,” he said. “It’s a hard job. He’s got plenty on his agenda. It’s difficult. A former president doesn’t need to make it any harder. Other presidents have taken different decisions; that’s mine.”<br /><br />The difference in the two men’s political views has always been apparent. Unfortunately, another difference that is obvious is the content of their characters. Despite attacks and accusations by the Obama administration, Bush has kept his silence.<br /><br />Even as he watched the successful surge in Iraq go for naught and the Middle East fall apart, he said nothing. Even as he stood and listened to Obama’s backhanded compliments at the George W. Bush Presidential Library dedication, he held his peace. He has been the picture of graciousness and tact. These are traits that the self-absorbed Obama should study – and perhaps try to emulate.</blockquote>GWB brought class to the office of President, something he learned from his parents and that is, sadly, lacking in others. Bush's "... rebuilding of presidential authority, badly degraded in the era of  Vietnam, Watergate, and Bill Clinton. He didn't hesitate to conduct  wireless surveillance of terrorists without getting a federal judge's  okay. He decided on his own how to treat terrorists and where they  should be imprisoned. Those were legitimate decisions for which the  president, as commander in chief, should feel no need to apologize."<br /><br />4. "... Bush's unswerving support for Israel. Reagan was once deemed Israel's  best friend in the White House. Now Bush can claim the title. He  ostracized Yasser Arafat as an impediment to peace in the Middle East.  This infuriated the anti-Israel forces in Europe, the Third World, and  the United Nations, and was criticized by champions of the 'peace  process' here at home. Bush was right."<br /><br />5. "No Child Left Behind (NCLB), the education reform bill cosponsored by  America's most prominent liberal Democratic senator Edward Kennedy. The  teachers' unions, school boards, the education establishment,  conservatives adamant about local control of schools--they all loathed  the measure and still do. It requires two things they ardently oppose,  mandatory testing and accountability. Kennedy later turned against NCLB, saying Bush is shortchanging the  program. In truth, federal education spending is at record levels.  Another complaint is that it forces teachers to 'teach to the test.' The  tests are on math and reading. They are tests worth teaching to."<br /><br />6. "Bush declared in his second inaugural address in 2005 that American  foreign policy (at least his) would henceforth focus on promoting  democracy around the world. This put him squarely in the Reagan camp,  but he was lambasted as unrealistic, impractical, and a tool of wily  neoconservatives. The new policy gave Bush credibility in pressing for  democracy in the former Soviet republics and Middle East and in zinging  various dictators and kleptocrats. It will do the same for President  Obama, if he's wise enough to hang onto it."<br /><br />7. "Medicare prescription drug benefit, enacted in 2003. It's not only  wildly popular; it has cost less than expected by triggering competition  among drug companies. Conservatives have deep reservations about the  program. But they shouldn't have been surprised. Bush advocated the drug  benefit in the 2000 campaign. And if he hadn't acted, Democrats would  have, with a much less attractive result."<br /><br />8. Some conservatives are cursing Chief Justice John Roberts  John Roberts for his recent upholding of Obamacare but he is his own man and a conservative, and was appointed by Bush along with Sam Alito.
