The NFL is looking into accusations by Washington tackle Trent Williams that a game official cursed at him and made disparaging comments about him during Sunday's loss at Philadelphia.
The official in question is umpire Roy Ellison, who lines up behind the offensive line.
'When you have a ref come up to you while you're at the line about to run a play and call you, excuse my language, but a 'garbage [expletive] disrespectful [expletive]' to me, this is a player's league,' Williams told reporters after the game. 'I just don't think there's no room for you to have to take that from the team and the refs. I think it's very unprofessional and it sucks. I'm at a loss for words. You never expect that as a player going into a game to have to beef with the refs also.'
There might be recorded evidence of what was said, if anything, because Redskins guard Kory Lichtensteiger was wearing a microphone for the game. He told reporters he heard Ellison say what Williams has accused him of saying. Quarterback Robert Griffin III also said he heard it.
The incident allegedly happened after Williams was flagged for holding shortly before halftime, a penalty the Eagles declined.
'If you rewind the play, you can see him walk by and say something,' Williams said. 'You'll see me turn around and say: 'What was that?' '
Williams said he had not 'disrespected' the official to elicit that type of reaction.
According to a pool report, referee Walt Coleman did not respond to a question about the accusation after the game. The pool reporter said Coleman came to the window of the bus carrying the officials to answer the reporter's question, but declined to answer it and directed the driver to roll up the window and leave the stadium.
