David Tennant's portrayal of Richard II is already a sold out hit on the stages of Stratford-upon-Avon and London, but last night's live transmission also proved to be hugely successful with the "Live From Stratford-upon-Avon" screenings generating more £1million as it showed across more than 364 screens in the UK.

60,000 people visited their local cinema last night to view the live action as David took to the stage at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, and a further 20,000 have already booked to view encore screenings.

It was also screened live internationally in Germany, Austria, Sweden, Ireland, Canada and Malta last night and the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Russia will screen the production over the next two months.

Richard II closes in Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday 16th November, it will then transfer to the Barbican Centre in London from 9th December.
