Of blogs and blogging–a guest post from Elkanah House Senior Primary School

Well, I can happily say that I have achieved these goals – and more. We even have a school library blog and a school sports blog going now!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“For the students I decided to use the <a href="http://www.kidblog.org/">KidBlog.org</a> platform because it is safe and secure and can be controlled by the teacher. It is a great stepping stone for future blogging. For the Grade blogs, Library and sports blogs I chose <a href="http://www.wordpress.com/">WordPress.com</a> simply because it has served me well and I have found it easy to use. </span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“I have to say, getting the students to blog has been a whole lot easier than getting the teachers to blog. Granted, they have more features on their blogs, which have at times, been trying for the teachers and frustration levels have been high on occasion (especially when the internet doesn’t play along and loading images takes much longer than anticipated – and you know how teachers are about their time). There have been highlights too, such as a teacher blogging via her laptop directly from camp, so the parents got the latest camp news hot off the press! The students, however, don’t sweat the small stuff and don’t worry as much about mistakes. They simply keep on trying until it works or they are satisfied with the result. We are now at the stage where the students are asking to blog, which is most encouraging! The learning curve has been a little more steep for the teachers, but we are definitely getting there. Having said this, it is difficult to keep the momentum going (my own blog is proof of this) and the teachers need reminders to blog and keep their students blogging. They seem to have difficulty in finding topics to blog about, but this will change over time and it will become more intuitive the longer they blog. I have tried to help by sending them ideas for blog posts and also links to further reading for blog posts. </span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b>Reasons for teachers to blog</b></span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"I do believe blogging can play a very important role in the classroom and this is why I encourage our teachers to blog: </span><br /><br /><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It opens a window into a more personal aspect of your classroom life.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is another way of keeping in contact with your parents.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is a way of sharing information, content, links etc. with students and parents alike.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It could be a showcase for student work, as well as a way in which to post homework.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is a method of reflecting on work done, learning that has taken place or places that have been visited etc.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With a blog you can share news in a paperless way!</span></li><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Blogging encourages responses from parents, pupils and other visitors, so it is another way in which to engage in a conversation.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you keep at it, it could transform your teaching and be the link to technology use in your classroom.</span></li></ul><div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; Most offending words take up space, clouding your point. </div><h2><b>Create a Word clutter collection</b></h2><div>Add your own crutch words to your list. (Mine is "a lot.") If you put them in your computer, save time by copying and pasting the words in the find box.</div><h2>Teach powerful writing and blogging</h2><div>If you teach writing, keep a word list or add to the list throughout the year. Teach students (especially bloggers) to search for and remove these words as part of writing.</div><h2>4 Times I always clear word clutter</h2><div><ol><li><b>Before I turn anything in to my editor.</b> All chapters or articles get searched for every word. For frequent words, save time and turn on the advanced search feature and check "match exact word."</li><li><b>"Epic Blog posts"</b> - If it takes longer than 30 minutes to write, I'm going to check it. If a post starts going viral, I'll recheck it for clutter words.</li><li><b>When I'm trying to communicate simply.</b> Less clutter words, more meaning. I've used this in important emails and letters.</li><li><b>This post. </b>I am afraid of using these words and harming my thesis here. I've already searched three times! ;-)</li></ol></div><div>Clutter words are a problem for me. I have to intentionally take them out.</div><div><br /></div><div>What are your offensive words? There are so many really fantastic teachers sharing what they do in their classroom with the world and benefiting so many others in the process. I would say that blogs play a very large part in driving the education revolution that is taking place world-wide. The incredible part is that blogs are free to create! It's time for you to create your own Blogger blog - take the challenge!

No more hiding behind what one was once comfortable with. I then decided to get to know the new interface and made screenshots as I went along. I would really like to share these with you and encourage you to make yourself a blog. Create a blogging culture in your English classroom

Let your learners answer questions and respond to prompts online. You could set a question on your blog and the learners can answer the question in your comment box. For literature lessons, invite an author to post on your blog and let the learners comment on this post.  This is a great way to have book discussions online. You could even try and organise a Skype interview with the author and let the slearners summarise this afterwards. Adding videos to blog or wiki posts

In <strong><em>Blogge</em>r</strong> and <strong><em>Edublogs</em></strong> you can easily add video if it is not too big in size. The problem comes in how your video camera saves files. The files (I think) need to be .wmv to be uploaded. This is where <em>YouTube Downloader </em>comes in handy. </span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;"><strong>Use YouTube Downloader to convert files</strong></span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;"><strong><br /></strong></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">This is a free downloadable programme that can convert movies to different formats. You need to select the second option 'Convert <em>video (previously downloaded) from file'</em>. It works with any video. However Edublogs and Blogger show these videos differently as I will show you now. </span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;"><strong>Showing videos in Edublogs and Blogger</strong></span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;"><strong><br /></strong></span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">a) <strong><u>Edublogs</u></strong>: Last year the Grade 3s used Photostory 3 (with narration) to make videos about Fish Hoek. This is how Edublogs shows the video: <a href="http://fionabeal.edublogs.org/files/2011/05/Fish-Hoek-25m9qo4.wmv">Fish Hoek</a> (Edublogs says about their video approach, <em>"It doesn’t embed your file in an actual video or audio player in your post; it only inserts a link to the file. This entitles me to myself and 50 of my students having the Plus account in which we can upload full length videos (maximum 200MB). Last year one of the Grade 5 classes participated in the ‘Monster project’ and many of the teachers around the world used Animoto to show everyone where they were at. I learned about it from another of my PLN friends from America, Bob Greenwood, with whom I was involved in a project. He teaches Grade 2 and he has his own channel on School Tube. He makes so many amazing videos. YOU TUBE VIDEOS</span></strong><br /><strong><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></strong><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I also like using YouTube and I have a channel there as well for all my school videos. Once you have posted a video it gives you a code which you can embed into any blog or wiki. This makes it very easy. Often with school videos I make them private so that they can only be seen by whoever has the YouTube address link. When we were on a video swap project with Denmark (Grade 6) we used YouTube’s private code for this. I sometimes think that parents will be happier with the use of School Tube because it is mainly for teachers. I believe there is now a YouTube ‘Teacher Tube’ channel which is an even better option. </span><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br /><strong><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">4.
