A video of a violent car crash in Florida has been released as a warning on the dangers of texting while driving.
The dash-cam video from a trailing police car, released Monday by the Fort Myers Police Department, shows a Pontiac Grand Am swerving outside of its lane before making a turn, suddenly speeding up and cutting across the inside lane.
The car then drives onto the sidewalk, where it hits a guard rail, a bus stop sign and a tree before rolling over. The video was taken shortly after 1 a.m. Jan. 4.
The 23-year-old driver of the car crawled from the overturned car without serious injury.
He admitted to the officer he was texting while behind the wheel and took his eyes off the road, officials said.
"Texting and driving is a serious epidemic," police spokesman Lt. Victor Medico said in a statement. "We hope the in-car video in this incident is a wake-up call to those that text and drive."
The driver was cited for careless driving and texting while driving, according to police.
