This year, and just in time for the holidays, Apple's new iPad Mini finally steps out of its big brother's shadow. The new iPad Mini with Retina display, first unveiled during an Oct. 22 media event in San Francisco, has finally been brought in line with Apple's larger, current-generation tablet, now called the iPad Air. Both are essentially the same device, except that the Mini is fronted by a 7.9-inch touch-screen versus the Air's 9.7-inch display. The original iPad Mini was a lesson for Apple in managing expectations. When it first debuted, it was criticized for being a smaller version of the iPad 2 instead of the newer iPad Retina. This time, Mini buyers don't have to compromise. Stock of some models is currently limited, but shoppers who keep their eyes on Apple's online store can nab one and pick it up in person with some persistence. But is it worth the price? At $399 to start, the cheapest Retina iPad Mini is pricier than most Android tablets in its class, including the excellent Google Nexus 7. Find out if the new iPad Mini with Retina display delights or disappoints in this eWEEK slide show.
