From backstage at the Oscars:
When did you feel a tipping point in your favor for this film?
Clooney: Michelle Obama.
Ben: When they gave us the trophies I was confident that we would win. I don’t get too much into the Oscar-ology and the pontificating. It doesn’t help me to read up on that stuff.

Daniel Day-Lewis' Facial Hair
Backstage at the Oscars with Daniel Day-Lewis:
Was it uncomfortable wearing the beard?
What do you mean? No it's just a beard. Do you wear your hair? It was my very own beard.
From HuffPost Los Angeles correspondent Sasha Bronner:
"A bad word. That starts with F."

Here's Awards Daily blogger Sasha Stone just after "Argo" won Best Picture.
@ AwardsDaily : See, I told you Argo was Crash incarnate. Won the same amount of awards even.
Have you ever seen a movie where you walk out saying, “That was just a great f--king movie”? That’s Ben Affleck’s Argo. Inexplicably, a film that draws its strength from humor and suspense, winds up being more moving the second time through. Perhaps because once you have been through the suspense part of it you get to know the characters better and therefore care about their outcomes more.

Ben Affleck's Arc
@ LouLumenick : Affleck: Oscar winner to laughingstock to Oscar winner. You can't make these things up.

At Least Someone Liked It
@ m1keh0gan : Tommy Lee Jones told me Seth MacFarlane was "hilarious." His favorite part? "I Saw Your Boobs." #notkidding
9:28 PM – 02/24/2013
Daniel Day-Lewis' Meryl Streep Joke
“It’s a strange thing, because three years ago, before we decided to do a straight swap, I had actually been committed to play Margaret Thatcher, um...” he joked. “And Meryl was, was Steven’s first choice for ‘Lincoln.’ And I’d like to see that version. And Steven didn’t have to persuade me to play Lincoln, but I had to persuade him that, perhaps, if I was going to do it, that Lincoln shouldn’t be a musical.”
The 85th annual Oscars gave audiences plenty to talk about -- from host Seth MacFarlane's "rejected"-but-still-definitely-included "We Saw Your Boobs" number to William Shatner's comment that the Academy should have asked Amy Poehler and Tina Fey to host. (Are they really hosting next year? Don't play with our emotions that way.)

When Jennifer Lawrence Fell
Need to make sense of the Oscars? We've got you covered. From the WHOAto the EEK to the OH NO!, we've rounded up the night's brightest highlights. Because nobody should be the odd man out at the water cooler.
Seth MacFarlane opened the night with a Tommy Lee Jones joke(remember Mr Grumpy Cat?). "The quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh starts now," quipped the host. So ...

In Memoriam Snub
The 85th annual Academy Awards took a moment Sunday evening to honor a number of late Hollywood greats. The memoriam nodded to an extraordinary group, including Nora Ephron and Richard Zanuck. However, one actor was noticeably absent from the list.
Andy Griffith wasn't mentioned in the Oscars' In Memoriam segment. More here.

Best Actress 2014?
@ brooksbarnesNYT : Reporter to Jennifer Lawrence, "Are you worried about peaking too soon?" She makes a face and pauses. "Well, now I am!"
From HuffPost Women:
We learned a few things: Seth MacFarlane likes boobs. Seth MacFarlane thinks eating disorders are funny. And Seth MacFarlane's one-liners would make the worst pick-up lines ever.
9:14 PM – 02/24/2013
How'd We Do?
Pretty great. David Rothschild, who spearheaded our Oscars Prediction Dashboard weighs in:
This is a spectacular result … The Oscars are always billed as “unpredictable” and that is especially true down the line for the more obscure categories … 19 out of 24 correct is a testament to scientific predictions

About That Oscars Tie
More on the Oscars tie that occurred in the Best Sound Editing category:
Although it is rare, Oscars ties have happened before.
In 1932, Frederic March won the Best Actor award for "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and tied with Wallace Beery for "The Champ" because Beery only beat him by one single vote, Slate notes. The rules allowed for a one vote difference to be called a tie back then, while today it must be the exact same.

That's A Wrap!
The 2013 Oscars are over. "Life of PI" led with four wins, including Best Director for Ang Lee. "Argo" and "Les Miserables" had three wins. "Django Unchained" and "Lincoln" earned two.
9:03 PM – 02/24/2013

@ kateyrich : Poor Bradley Cooper, knowing they pre-wrote a musical number about how he's a loser.

Seth MacFarlane and Kristen Chenoweth sing a song about the losers at the Oscars. Surely this will go over well in the room.

Oscars 2013 Winners
"Argo," Ang Lee, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Christoph Waltz and Anne Hathaway were 2013 Oscar winners. Here's the full list.
Affleck, who was snubbed for Best Director, gives a long but thoughtful acceptance speech. More on the historic "Argo" Oscar win here:
The 2013 Academy Award for Best Picture was awarded to Hollywood's favorite film: "Argo." Oscar looked good in Ben Affleck's hand, especially as the star was notably snubbed in the Best Directing category.

SURPRISE!

The win was a historic one for Day-Lewis. The Best Actor award is his third overall, giving him more Oscars in the category than any actor in the history of the Academy Awards. Marlon Brando, Gary Cooper, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Fredric March, Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn and Spencer Tracy all won two Best Actor awards.

Ang Lee Wins
Fun fact: The last time Ang Lee won, Best Picture and Best Director went to different movies. That could happen again if "Argo" wins.
The Best Director race was a confusing one for Oscar experts, if only because the director most honored throughout awards season wasn't eligible for the award. Ben Affleck, who directed "Argo," won Best Director awards from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Golden Globes), Directors Guild of America and BAFTA; he was famously left off the Oscar ballot, however, when nominations were announced on Jan. 10.

Steven Soderbergh Is Pumped
@ Bitchuation : ang lee, holy shit! i don't think nate silver got this--too small a sample size...
Sorry, Steven Spielberg. Lee wins Best Director for "Life of Pi." He beat Spielberg, Michael Haneke, Benh Zeitlin and David O. Russell. This is Lee's second Best Director Oscar.

The second Oscar win for "Argo" is a big one: It wins Best Adapted Screenplay for Chris Terrio. He thanks the nominees and "the brilliant Tony." Kushner wrote "Lincoln."
Chris Terrio's "Argo" script is favored to win, but the category is loaded: "Lincoln," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Life of Pi" and "Silver Linings Playbook."

Adele Is The Best
She's halfway to an EGOT, after winning at the Oscars. She also has a Golden Globe, but those don't count. More on Adele's Oscar win:
Adele, who was the favorite for the award, performed "Skyfall" at the 85th annual Academy Awards, just a month after the song won her the Golden Globe award for Best Original Song. "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" was also performed at the show, as Norah Jones gave a strong rendition. "Suddenly" was included in a celebration of musicals of the last decade that also nodded to "Chicago" and "Dreamgirls."
Adele, Oscar winner. She wins for "Skyfall." Let it crumble, y'all!

Barbra Streisand At The Oscars
Barbra Streisand sang at the 2013 Oscars. A look at her past history with the Academy Awards:
Streisand won her first Academy Award in 1969 for Best Actress for her performance in "Funny Girl." She was later nominated for Best Actress for 1973's "The Way We Were," won Best Original Song for "Evergreen" from 1976's "A Star Is Born," was nominated for Best Picture for 1991's "The Prince of Tides," and nominated again for Best Original Song for "I Finally Found Someone" from 1996's "The Mirror Has Two Faces."
That's how Seth MacFarlane introduced the cast of "Chicago," who are on hand to present Best Original Score. (Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones are on hand.)
To honor the late Marvin Hamlisch, who closed out the Oscars In Memoriamsegment. "I'll always have those memories," Streisand said.
Clooney, staying classy, says, "Thank you for the memories."

Adele Is Here To Sing "Skyfall"
"Let it crumbleeeeeeeeeeeeee." More on Adele's "Skyfall" performance, the first time she's ever performed the James Bond theme in public, here:
The British songstress (who picked up another Grammy on Feb. 10), performed "Skyfall" during the Academy Awards. The theme from the James Bond movie of the same name is a slow, emotional ballad that famously made tough guy Daniel Craig cry.

"Argo" Wins Best Editing
William Goldenberg beats himself (he was also nominated for "Zero Dark Thirty") and wins Best Editing for "Argo." It's the first Oscar for "Argo," and a good predictor of Best Picture.

How's Your Oscar Pool Going?
Full list of Oscar winners here.
So of course tonight of all nights, a night in which Anne is expected to go home with an Academy Award in hand for Best Supporting Actress, the torches are burning hotter than ever. Her nipple-y Prada dress hasn't done much to assuage the backlash, nor was quoting her mother's saying "It's business in front, party in the back!"
7:26 PM – 02/24/2013
Anne's Big Night
Hathaway was the clear favorite heading into Sunday's telecast. Though she only appears in a fraction of the film, her turn as Fantine has been hailed as the movie's emotional apex. Hathaway sang "I Dreamed a Dream" live on the movie's set, offering a haunting portrayal of a single mother who turns to prostitution and sinks to utter despair in order to provide for her child.
7:25 PM – 02/24/2013
"It Came True"
"It came true," Hathaway says while holding her Oscar. She thanked her fellow nominees, then her cast mates, including Hugh Jackman. Hathaway runs down through the usual thank yous, then her "team," her friends, her family and her husband.
"By far and away, the greatest moment of my life was when you walked into it," she said.
Surprise! She wins for "Les Miserables" and the band plays "Can You Hear The People Sing?" and not "I Dreamed A Dream."

More On "Amour"
Michael Haneke's "Amour" was the slight favorite in pre-awards speculation. The movie, which tells the emotionally fraught tale of an elderly couple coping with stroke and paralysis, was nominated in foru additional categories: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (Emanuelle Riva) and Best Director for Haneke. Joining "Amour" (Austria) as nominees for Best Foreign Film were "Kon-Tiki" (Norway), "No" (Chile), "A Royal Affair" (Denmark) and "War Witch" (Canada).

"Searching for Sugar Man" was the leader of a strong pack of nominees. Directed Malik Bendjelloul, "Searching for Sugar Man" was an audience award winner at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and won Best Documentary from BAFTA and the Producers Guild of America.

How We Doing?
It's still early, but so far HuffPost's statistically driven Oscar Predictions Dashboard is having a pretty decent night. Our forecasting model missed Christoph Waltz for Best Supporting Actor, "Les Misérables" for Best Makeup and "Inocente" for Best Live Action Short, but it's nailed everything else, giving it a healthy seven-for-ten record as the show's second hour continues. Check your picks against those of our robots, which, if not infallible, are at least making a game of it.
The favorite in the category wins Best Documentary Feature. The film is about a '60s rock star named Sixto Rodriguez.
He also hopes that Seth MacFarlane can "turn the show around." Ding!
