Ten takeaways from the South African Google in Ed Summit held in Cape Town recently

Great idea, Anthony, I have taken the challenge! The EdtechTeam’s <a href="http://www.gafesummit.com/">Google Summits</a> are enormously popular and are held all over the world sometimes twice in a week! This initiative of the <a href="http://www.edtechteam.com/">EdTechTeam</a> has had far-reaching effects on inspiring educational change - the collaborative and free Google way! It was such a privilege for SchoolNet to invite this team to Africa for the first time ever, and along with a fantastic Parklands College team, host the event at Parklands in Cape Town. Here are ten of my takeways. 1. We could see each other and converse as though we were in the same room. Google Hangouts can be used effectively in education in a multitude of ways. 2. It is a marvelous way to plan for a Conference and is easy to navigate as it sets everything out clearly. They also used <a href="http://www.eventbrite.com/">Eventbrite</a> to invite folk to the sessions and registration was a breeze – all done on a cell phone or tablet.  3. (I am going to be an avid follower of next vista.org from now on.) I loved his keynote and attended two of his sessions after that namely ‘<a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1ua6wi9cwOxtGW_Y_m6We8RuyjuGryjRb_t5TAyf28Ro/present#slide=id.g1e28bde9_0_84" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Fostering creativity and excellence’</a> and  ‘<a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1A9ljZ9yg0a2RNEvrQJOKc81oKhexwHthLRY37GOS4Lo/present#slide=id.g1e28bde9_0_84" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Inspiring your colleagues with free resources’</a>.  He has a captivating style of presentation. (At the end of the Summit he chose his favourite tweet which was "Rushton I’d like to hug your brain." Sharing with and learning from others I also presented on <a href="http://goo.gl/vmygUB">Starting the paperless journey with Google</a>. I mention this as a takeaway as I had an awesome group of attendees who shared their own stories of their experiences of implementing Google in the classroom. We all learned so much from each other.  8. The Demoslam The demo slam was such fun and was very well-received. The presentations  needed to be high energy, geeky plus useful which was a challenge! The winner was a great, fun presentation from Kevin Sherman using <a href="http://docsstorybuilder.appspot.com/">Google Docs Story Builder</a>. It was the first silent demo slam the team has witnessed! Thank you Chris for these awesome resources on your Google site! Yes, Google sites is going to become a firm favourite of mine as well. Networking Last but not least I LOVED the networking at the Conference. I learned SO much from the international team of presenters, and I am hoping this event will become an annual one. I think this summit really showed teachers how Google can be used very effectively in the 21st century classroom. Teachers were overwhelmed with the presentations given by the Google Ed Tech Team and the volumes of information that they will still be grappling with when they return to their schools next week. Parklands College had not only provided their magnificent facilities to the Summit at no cost but had also sponsored a number of teachers to attend. The hospitality, efficiency and generosity of the Parklands team cannot be overemphasised. We’re especially excited to announce William Florance from Google to keynote our event. If you are interested, please take a look at a few of the session titles listed below (differentiated in levels of expertise) and fill out <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QK_p-pCgX4Zu6BplOmMeA_47TJO-J4G_j0TCVzbn49s/viewform">this form</a> sharing your interest in presenting.  Each of the sessions will be one hour in length and should engage the participants as much as you can. We encourage our participants to bring a device to engage with the topics and presentations. We will provide you with a projector and a screen, however you need to bring your own laptop for your presentation. Participants will also have WiFi to follow along with your presentation. Please fill out this Request with the title and description of your session. It will also ask for some biography information. <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QK_p-pCgX4Zu6BplOmMeA_47TJO-J4G_j0TCVzbn49s/viewform">Request for Presenters</a> You do not have to stick to a title of ideas from the list below, it is just a list of suggested topics.  If you have another session that you would be interested in sharing that is not on the list, please feel free to add your own presentation and description.  We will have a lot of sessions throughout the two day conference so feel free to fill out the form more than once if you would be willing to share more than one presentation. If you know of anyone else that would be a great presenter at the Summit, please forward this email on to them. Please submit your presentation proposals by August 1st.  We will be in touch with you shortly after to let you know more about the schedule for your presentation(s).   Compensation to presenters For compensation, you will receive a complimentary registration to the two-day conference (a R2000+ value) and be able to work closely with this amazing group of Googlers and presenters.  We sincerely hope that you will accept the invitation to present to make this a successful professional development event for all.
