On the fourth full day of the first family’s winter vacation in Hawaii, President Obama gave a 10-year-old girl an early Christmas present.
During a morning workout at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay, near the president’s vacation rental on the island of Oahu, Obama encountered Kyrstin Lavelle, who apparently asked the president for an autograph.
Obama obliged, writing in the little girl’s journal, “To Kyrstin – Dream big dreams!” Underneath the message, the president signed his name.
Kyrstin described Obama as “really nice,” according to a pool report by the Wall Street Journal’s Colleen McCain Nelson. Kyrstin said she gave Obama flowers and that the president joked that he would give them to the first lady and say that he picked them himself, according to the report.
At the gym, president Obama was reportedly working out with free weights and shooting baskets.
This is the sixth year in a row the first family has spent the holidays in Hawaii, Obama’s home state and the place where he spent many of his childhood years.
