In a new video interview clip released by BBC America, David Tennant considers how Doctor Who has evolved throughout the modern series. He also reveals that the 50th Anniversary Special will tell the story of a little known and dark time of the Doctor’s life.

“It’s interesting to look at the Doctor as the one constant, how he’s evolved from where we meet him in 2005 to where he is now,” he says. “I suppose the Doctor’s journey has been one of rehabilitation after the Time War that we know so little about that he was a recent refugee from, you assume…and actually that story is told and brought up to date by this very special we’re filming at the moment.”

David also adds that although The Day Of The Doctor is intended as a celebration of 50 years of the show, it is also intended to push the legend of the Doctor forward.

“One of the clever things that Steven [Moffat]’s done in writing this script…is that it’s moving the whole Doctor Who legend forward in quite a dramatic and fundamental way…it’s a kind of seismic shift in the Doctor’s story,” he says.

Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor stars David Tennant, Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and JohnHurt. It premieres on Saturday 23rd November at 7.50pm GMT on BBC One and at 2.50pm ET on BBC America, and will be simulcast in 2D and 3D by TV broadcasters and cinemas in over 75 different countries around the world. Click here for a list of participating territories.
