Job Title: Research Scientist (optics)
Location: Milpitas, CA
Duration: Fulltime

Job description:
Responsibilities:
The Research Scientist will be responsible for designing and conducting feasibility investigations to provide valuable guidance for KLA-Tencor's roadmap in optical inspection of patterned wafers.  KLA-Tencor has a rich history of innovation and technical leadership in wafer inspection for the semiconductor industry.  The advent of devices having 25nm, 18nm and smaller design rules with complex three dimensional structures, using advanced processes and materials, will present a particularly challenging goal of maintaining high-speed inspection and classification of defects that are much smaller than the wavelength of light used to inspect the wafer.  The Research Scientist will work within a small technology group to identify, investigate, and develop promising new concepts, methods and subsystems that could be used to meet these challenges.  The Research Scientist will devise and test new inspection tool configurations and modify test benches by working with Design Engineers. To test new tool configurations, the Research Scientist will work with Customers, Marketing and Applications Engineers to obtain relevant wafer samples and then measure the wafers on modified tools and test benches. The Research Scientist will use electro-magnetic simulations of our current and future inspection tools on our customer's defect challenges to devise new inspection tool configurations.  The Research Scientist will acquire, analyze and present his/her data to the technology group and to the rest of the organization and to customers. To complete this work the Research Scientist will work within a team, where peer review of designs, test plans and data analysis is customary.

Preferred Qualifications:
M.S./Ph.D. in a scientific or engineering field that involves electro-optical detection or imaging is required.  A Ph.D. or 2 to 4 years of relevant industry experience in any of these fields is preferred.  The successful candidate will have a proven record of designing highly complex experiments or engineering trials that involve sophisticated optical data collection and other physical measurements.  The candidate will also have proficiency in data analysis packages such as MatLab and demonstrate the ability to extract clear results from large, complex data sets.  Excellent communication and presentation skills are required.  Travel of up to 30% might be required to foreign destinations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate (Academic)
OR
Master's Level Degree with at least 2 years of experience.
OR
Bachelor's Level Degree with at least 3 years of experience.
