This is a mistake. Everyone you’ve ever known in your life will be there if you show up stinky and wearing your twenty-eight year old ripped up senior high t-shirt. It’s also possible that a cute little red head in nursing scrubs will also be there and you might get to take your chance at love just like Bobby Kraft was telling us all about on the <a href="http://www.blogtalkradio.com/im-with-stupid/2013/07/21/summer-of-love">Summer of Love</a> show a couple of weeks ago. Worst of all, you just know the paparazzi will be hanging out in the parking lot to get pics of you. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Menu:</b> The best way to do grocery shopping is to know what you’re gonna need. The only way to know what you’re gonna need is to make a menu for the week. You know like baked chicken, mac & cheese and rolls on Monday, pork chops, baked beans and broccoli on Tuesday and on for the rest of the week. Same goes for breakfast and lunches. This way you know what to put on your … <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>List!!</b> You can’t go grocery shopping without a list! The best way to make out the list is to think about the layout of the store you’re going to and make the list follow the layout. That last thing you want to do is keep going back and forth from one end of the store to the other looking for shit. The list keeps you from doing something crazy like trying to make up your menu for the week in your head. It’s all about efficiency. Most importantly, the list keeps you from just wandering the isles looking for stuff that looks good and you end up with a full cart and a blown grocery budget. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><b>Multiple Stores:</b> Speaking of grocery budgets, us regular everyday folks who can’t afford to shop at Whole Foods and get all organic everything sometimes have to go to two different stores to get what we need at the right prices. You know, like maybe go to Aldi to get boxed and canned items, sliced mild cheddar, frozen chicken tenders, paper items and shit like that.  If you don’t have an Aldi, then Walmart it is I guess. Then you have to go to a real store like Hudson’s Supermarket AKA: The People Pleasing Place to get your fresh produce and quality meats.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNUqtLr_VnosY7GjMZyz9sYx5lu1Yuc6gMjCNJWtFHZBHEacO5TSMjyR-K1YOv8eNgqfAJC-RAtCvc4cP15PVc_MuNUzHyKV7d7MnkazSimcalbSglE2b0dbVCJzjKrbbDEraopAOMHFQ/s1600/Lea+Michele+Hot+Legs+Shopping.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNUqtLr_VnosY7GjMZyz9sYx5lu1Yuc6gMjCNJWtFHZBHEacO5TSMjyR-K1YOv8eNgqfAJC-RAtCvc4cP15PVc_MuNUzHyKV7d7MnkazSimcalbSglE2b0dbVCJzjKrbbDEraopAOMHFQ/s320/Lea+Michele+Hot+Legs+Shopping.jpg" width="233" /></a><b>Salmonella’s no Joke Man: </b>The most important part of grocery shopping is to make sure that cold items don’t get too warm and nobody dies because you don’t know how to handle your meat. First, you have to keep your raw chicken away from other items. The chicken should be wrapped in a plastic bag in your cart in case it leaks nasty raw chicken juice of death. Also, be sure to get your milk and frozen items LAST!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Once you get to the car, depending on how hot and humid it is during the dog days of summer you should put the milk and the meats in a cooler. If there’s room, some of the frozen stuff like ice cream should go in the cooler too. This way you don’t risk anything going bad or melting and you don't kill anyone. It’s a win-win situation. If you want, you can always take more than one cooler and put ALLLLL of your cold items in a cooler. That might be a bit extreme, but you can never be too careful. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">There are always some exceptions. If you happen to be at the store when they’ve got a big box of sausage patties for half price or maybe four 12-packs of Pepsi for $10, or bun length hot dogs for a buck or something like that, you gotta take advantage that shit. Otherwise, those are basically the rules. There they'll be wined, dined, flattered, enriched financially and handed a draft bill to empower corporations at democracy's expense.<br /><br />Tim Carpenter at the <a href="http://cjonline.com/news/state/2013-07-26/kansas-gop-flocking-alec-gathering" rel="nofollow">Topeka Capital-Journal</a> broke the story five days ago:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">More than two-dozen Kansas legislators, including top Republican leaders of the House and Senate, plan to participate at the national convention in Chicago of an organization dedicated to layering a corporate agenda into politics at state Capitols, officials said Friday. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">House Speaker Ray Merrick, R-Stilwell, and Senate President Susan Wagle, R-Wichita, are national board members of the conservative, Republican-oriented American Legislative Exchange Council and scheduled to lead the Kansas delegation from Aug. 7-9. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">State policy allows a subsidy of registration fees for each legislator in attendance, which would be a minimum of $475. Other travel, hotel and meal costs can be covered by taxpayers only if the lawmaker serves in a leadership role in ALEC, said Jeff Russell, director of Legislative Administrative Services.</blockquote>Oh, the irony.<br /><br /><a href="http://ottawaherald.com/opinion/073113editGuest">The Hutchinson News</a> calls it "comically ironic."  <br /><br />And in a scathing editorial, The Hutchinson News excoriates the Kansas hypocrites:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">...a group of self proclaimed budget hawks apparently missed the memo that government spending is the root of all evil, and that even the smallest government expenditure is a misuse of hard-earned taxpayer dollars. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">According to the legislative administrative service, in fiscal year 2012 legislators received $150,666 for convention-related travel expenses. In fiscal year 2013, lawmakers received total reimbursement of $119,528 for such travel – and the upcoming year totals more than $4,875 so far, with the filing deadline not ending until June 30, 2014. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">Kansas lawmakers are certainly free to attend whatever conferences they think will help them become better legislators. But it’s a special type of hypocrisy when a group of legislators who brand themselves as budget watchdogs and small government conservatives eagerly line up for a taxpayer handout to help pay for a voluntary networking weekend in Chicago.</blockquote>ALEC isn't really about small government. ALEC just wants one thing to be small: constraints on corporate plunder of the public trough. No one should be surprised that self-serving hypocrites are taking part in the looting by taking a taxpayer-funded ALEC trip. <br /><br />ALEC's stench has wafted all the way across the Atlantic, where the Irish blog Vestibule caught wind of these taxpayer-funded ALEC trips. Vestibule wrote a hilarious send-up of these ALEC "conferences" a few years ago, which we will share with you below:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Now, imagine if you will that you are a Republican lawmaker in a state whose legislature is controlled by your party.  You are approached by persons you admire, with an invitation to attend a conference under the aegis of ALEC.  And let us situate that gathering at some plush and exclusive enclave- Palm Springs, for example. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">There you and your spouse will be met and looked after (families are distinctly welcome)  by business leaders whose names ring with the reassurance of real power- Fortune 500 executives and their staffs. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">You will socialise- play golf on exquisitely maintained courses, dine on the most blissful fare, and exchange neatly patented views with the very men and women who concocted them. You will be flattered and cajoled.  You will be welcomed into circles you have always aspired to enter- assuming you were not born there, a condition of privilege discreetly enjoyed by many state office-holders.  Finally, you will be showered with political support in the form of crucial campaign donations and endorsements. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">And really, all you have to do is attend a two-hour meeting with friendly representatives of, let's say, the commercial prison industry. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">At this meeting you will be presented with a handsome, well-written, entirely serviceable piece of legislation.  It may contain the word "reform" in its title.  (Again, think Humpty Dumpty)<br />The matter at hand could involve a perfectly reasonable tightening of immigration law.  Or the justified imposition of harsher, more restrictive criminal sentences.  The bill may mandate the laudable establishment of profit-making industries in a state penitentiary system, or the withdrawal of wasteful educational services to undeserving prisoners. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">But whatever the avowed goal of the prefabricated legislation, you may be sure its passage will result in enhanced revenue and power for those companies which drafted the law.</blockquote>Spot on. <br /><br />

EISAI ROCKS - I think we found a provider

Back in those day, I had left my name and phone number at the Staunton Library at the children's desk -- homeschoolers spend hours at the public library and I knew that was where I could find local moms -- and Christine was the one who called.<br /><br />She was in leadership with the local homeschool group, Parent Educators of Augusta County Homes, and it wasn't too long before she pulled me into leadership, too, once they found out I had been the newsletter editor with our homeschool group in North Carolina. We spent many happy years raising our children and teaching and working in leadership with others who were doing the same. She was the one who introduced me to Milmont Greenhouse and Nursery in Stuarts Draft ... her husband was part of one of the local Mennonite families with ties to that area of the county.<br /><br />Our children graduated from homeschool and then from college, and we drifted apart a bit but still catch up occasionally. After her phone call this morning, today is one of those catch-up days. So I'm heading to her house on the Middle River for a lunch of quiche, salad, and iced tea along with conversation and, always, laughter. Because when the two of us get together, we laugh the silly, carefree laughter of longtime friends.<br /><br />It reminds me of the saying, "Make new friends but keep the old; one is silver, the other gold."<br /><br />How very true. <br /><br />---<br /><i>Lynn Mitchell educated her children at home for 16 years and was part of leadership in North Carolina's Iredell County Home Educators (ICHE) and Virginia's Parent Educators of Augusta County Homes (PEACH). <div style='font-style:italic;' class='uawbyline'>By Kenna Killam</div><br /><br /> <div class='uawarticle'>Quite some time ago I engaged in gym meets in all of Montana the state. I was very good at it also. Rather quick I worked my way into the upper levels of my section, and was accomplishing more complex routines daily.<br /> <br /> The most awesome detail about it was that I didn't just thoroughly enjoy competing, but I was also growing quite athletic and muscular at the same time. I was too young to really notice or pay attention to how strong I was becoming, but as I got older, I was extremely thrilled with my stout physique and my sexy fit stomach.<br /> <br /> I continued to be stout and built a long while after I finished competing. I guessed that I wasn't ever going to fail to keep my toned muscles. Without notice, when I started getting close to thirty, I started to see that I was swiftly losing muscle size, and that my abdomen was not what it had been previously.<br /> <br /> I didn't have my strong six pack anymore, I had chub arising on my abs. Before I would pause and look at myself in the mirror, and squeeze my fat, wondering how it got this bad. Like I said, I stayed fit my whole life and presently I was suddenly not feeling so great. This happened to be a sudden bombshell for me!<br /> <br /> I remained in denial pertaining to the issue a good portion of time. I would squeeze my pecks into the the mirror and wonder regarding what I used to look like. I did not long to reveal to me personally how bad things had gotten, and that my physique wasn't how it had been. So alternatively to hitting the fitness center and getting my six pack abs back, I unfortunetely carried on gulping alcohol and sitting inside the house constantly. I was pondering if I may at any moment mysteriously begin looking more fit. Holy cow was I confused!<br /> <br /> I didn't just not change the way my body looked, my body continued to get worse. Without warning my six pack was cut down to a two pack. I recognized that I was at the point where I had to get in better shape. I needed to get back at the fitness center and commence working out just like I had in the past. I guessed it could be difficult effort but I was determined to get back in shape.<br /> <br /> So nearly 16 years subsequently after I completed competing in gymnastics, I got back into getting fit quite often. Man oh man did my fitness begin slow for the first while! I had taken for granted how good of shape I had been previously. Suddenly I was going to have to acquire it all the hard way. At first I began jogging at least once a day. This slowly started to be much farther runs. At a certain point I started lifting weights and starting abdominal training. At the same time I started to eat much more nutritionally and lessen my consumption on processed foods and sweet food. Not too far in the future, I began to see a switch in myself. My ab muscles also started coming back up anew after a really long time of not being there.<br /> <br /> I am continuing to be on a campaign to seeing the shape I'd been when I was younger. However this happens to be a great start. I guess that I still have a long way to go. I am quite honestly really glad that I started my adventure one more time.<br /> <br /> For some reason I figured that all the gymnastics I happened to do all growing up was everything I needed. I could simply sustain off of the muscle I had for the remaining part of my life. I recognized the painful way that as you refrain from nourishing your body the right way and exercising your muscles will begin to trick you.<br /> <br /> I guess the most important lesson that I have learned through everything that has happened is that eating right and exercise won't stop. If you decide you want to have fit ab muscles you need to continually work at it. There is no magic remedy to find you results. Fitness really just comes down to hard work and dedication.<br /> <br /> When you are a kid, that difficult work comes in the form of having fun. You really like football or playing with friends. Your exercise happens this way. You don't really even have to wonder about why that is. It really simply happens. But as you get older, working out gets a lot harder. You have to work at it. You have to take care of your family. Speaking is pretty easy for me because preparing for a keynote feels a lot like preparing for class with one exception. Teenagers are a much tougher audience than you beautiful, wonderful educators out there.</p> <p>If you have too long of a gap or you're caught unprepared you might end up with a mess on your hands. </p> <h3>Do I upgrade and make it hard or keep it the same and go easy?</h3> <p>This year, I was faced with a decision. Do I stick with Windows 7 and the last version of office or upgrade to Office 2013? I had no choice. I have decided to keep my students on the leading bleeding edge of technology where it hurts. Often, it hurts me more than anything as I have to update my plans and create new tutorials. Everything ends up being new. It hurts, but it fits with my decision.</p> <p>My decision is to have, as far as I know it, one of the leading technology education programs in the world for high schoolers. We don't have the money to have such a program but really, as long as my computers are 4 years old or less, the only thing it costs me is myself. </p> <h3>Decisions. Decisions.</h3> <p>I have decided to teach. I decide to teach every single day.I teach with decisions. I teach with my life. I teach with my own willingness to put myself out there and learn new things even when I feel clueless.</p> <p>If teaching is a decision and a lifestyle, learning is too. Those precious children decide if they are going to learn from you. If you decide to teach, they have to decide to learn from you. </p> <p>But inherent in my decision to teach is my decision and commitment to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to get their attention. Sing, dance, swing from the rafters, turn off the lights and use lasers to teach about fiber optics. Whatever it takes. This, as you know, those of you rebels among our profession who are insanely committed to our craft - this takes everything we have. </p> <p>Teacherpreneurs like us are all out committed. We are committed with heart, soul, and mind and will not stop until the last bell rings on the last day of school.<br></p> <p>Deciding to teach doesn't mean we're perfect. It means that when we mess up and fall down that we get up and start over. It means that we don't quit. It means that the only failure we cannot accept is quitting because failure is a daily part of what happens in our classrooms.</p> <h3>We need admins to protect the teacher's heart</h3> <p>This is why anything that tries to kill the heart of a teacher should be watched for closely by administrators. Such tenacious commitment takes a lot of time, heart and energy. So, when you have others on staff who aren't in the classroom who make it extremely difficult for teachers -- Those who create hurdles.-- Those who are rude. --- Those who just try to be a pain because they can... you have to watch for that because with the amount of effort that it takes to make the decision and carry through with that decision to teach... we teachers don't have a lot of energy for other guff from non-classroom spaces.</p> <h3>Will you decide to teach?</h3> <p>Teaching is a decision. It takes all you have. But as anyone who has given their heart and soul to such a worthy cause will tell you, students give back far more than you could ever give.
