Chicago rapper Chief Keef was put in jail yesterday after a Cook County juvenile court judge ruled that the 17-year-old rapper had violated his probation, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Keef was sentenced to 18 months of probation last January after he was convicted of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for pointing a gun at Chicago police officers. Although terms of his probation included requiring him to stay away from guns, Keef (real name: Keith Cozart) last summer did a video interview with Pitchfork at a New York shooting range, where he also spent 20 minutes firing a semiautomatic rifle. The video has since been taken down.
An attorney for Keef, Dennis Berkson, told the court that the rapper didn't violate the spirit of his probation in the Pitchfork interview. "Was it stupid? Yes. Did it violate the court order? No," Berkson argued, blaming Keef's record company, Interscope, for setting up the interview. The label released Chief Keef's album Finally Rich last year.
Judge Carl Anthony Walker disagreed with Berkson. "There is a clear record of a disregard for the court's authority," Walker said. He scheduled a sentencing hearing for Thursday.
