‘Breaking Bad’ Alternate Ending Reveals It Was Just a Dream
Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek revisit their ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ characters
The bloody and brutal series finale of Breaking Bad, which aired to tremendous fanfare at the end of September, has been combed over for every last insight into the remaining mysteries of its characters. It’s been hard for fans to let go of Walter White and his associates.
But what if the ending had taken a very different direction? What if, as many close viewers of the show surely suspected, the whole saga of the chemistry-teacher-turned-druglord was all a dream in the sleeping mind of Hal, the hapless dad Bryan Cranston played on the Fox comedy Malcolm in the Middle from 2000 until 2006? An alternate ending to the series that was released this weekend shows Cranston and his Malcolm co-star Jane Kaczmarek playing out that scenario, in a nod to the finale of Newhart.
Relive Walter White’s Lowest Lows on ‘Breaking Bad’
“I just had the scariest dream!” Hal tells his wife, Lois, after waking up in terror. “I was this meth dealer. I was this world-class chemist, and I cooked and I sold this ultra-pure methamphetamine!”
“You cooking anything?” Lois quips.
Recounting the dream, Hal tells Lois about a DEA agent brother who “looked like the guy from The Shield” and a man-child who “would use the B-word a lot.”
According to Buzzfeed, the clip is a DVD extra from the Breaking Bad: The Complete Series box set, which is due out on November 26th.
