What kind of wily actor managed to get the precious intel needed to penetrate, disrupt and destroy a meeting at the National Security building in Damascus - killing Defense Minister Dawoud Rajha and his deputy Assef Shawkat, Bashar al-Assad's brother-in-law? </span><br /><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: large;">What really happened is still murky. Reuters said it was a suicide bomber working as a bodyguard for Assad's inner circle. Agence France-Presse reported it was a suicide bomber detonating his belt. Beirut's Al-Akhbar said it was a planted bomb. Same for Lebanon's Al-Manar TV - detailing it was a 40-kilogram bomb.  </span><br /><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: large;">So who was it? The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)? The MI6? Saudi intel? Turkish intel? Or that oh so pliable ghost - al-Qaeda?  </span><br /><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: large;">US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, five months ago, came up </span><br /><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: large;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: large;"> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; line-height: 115%;">with a non-denial denial by in fact admitting that Washington was working side by side with al-Qaeda in Syria supporting the Not Exactly Free Syrian Army (FSA). [1] <br /><br />And then there was Hillary "We came, we saw, he died" Clinton only 10 days ago warning there was still "a chance to save the Syrian state from a catastrophic assault".[2] Just like her prophetic warning only a few days before Muammar Gaddafi was captured, sodomized and executed, how could she be certain of this "catastrophic assault"? <br /><br />The FSA - out of its Turkey digs - wasted no time in claiming responsibility; it was an improvised explosive device (IED) planted inside the room. There were no suicide bombers. Yet the FSA have been lying through their teeth for months. Anyway, FSA spokesman Qassim Saadedine insists this is "the volcano" they promised to awake a few days ago. <br /><br />Much juicier, in parallel, is the Liwa al-Islam ("The Brigade of Islam") saying in its Facebook page that it "targeted the cell called the crisis control room in the capital of Damascus". That would be the al-Qaeda-style connection. In this case, where are they getting their intel from? Their good pals, the CIA? <br /><br /><b>Time to round up those canolis</b><br />The Assad family saga does read like a ready-made script for Godfather IV, as evoked in this collective foreign-policy <a href="http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/the-gate/"><span style="color: blue;">blog discussion</span></a> before the bombing. <br /><br />Assad's brother-in-law, General Assef Shawkat, was a big security honcho - widely viewed as the actual ruler of Damascus. He was born out of a poor Bedouin family who settled in Tartus - where Russia keeps its naval base. Shawkat was the leader of a special brigade during the 1982 Hama massacre - whose victims were essentially from the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood (MB). <br /><br />Then Godfather Hafez al-Assad put him in charge of protecting his daughter Bouchra. They sort of fell in love with each other. Bouchra's brother, the unruly Bassel al-Assad, was violently against it; he had Shawkat, who he dismissed as a country bumpkin, arrested at least four times. Bassel died in 1994 in a car accident; conspiracy theorists blamed it on Rifaat al-Assad, Hafez's brother, who lived in France and who badly wanted to be Hafez's successor. <br /><br />Bouchra and Shawkat had to flee to Rome to make the Assad family face the inevitable. Patriarch Hafez ended up giving them his blessing, and they finally got married. Hafez then put Shawkat in charge of preparing Bashar to become president. From 1998 onwards they got really close; that's how Shawkat became the most powerful man in Syria. Inevitably another blood feud crept up - this time with Maher, Bashar's younger brother, the commander of the 4th Division, who even shot Shawkat; he had to recover in a hospital in Paris. <br /><br />WikiLeaks cables have shown how Shawkat was very close to the French security establishment. [3] They've also shown that Shawkat was in charge of everything related to US-Syria security exchanges. So Shawkat was not exactly a persona non grata in Washington; he was "one of our bastards" as well. <br /><br />The key point is that since becoming president in 2000, Bashar has always relied on Shawkat. He was Bashar's Richelieu - even though he had no popular base, nor even full support among the Alawite elite. <br /><br />And that may be a clue to what comes next. Many at Assad's inner circle were extremely antagonistic towards Shawkat. Now that he's gone, this might eventually point to a white coup in Damascus - with some of the inner circle finally deciding to "decapitate" Assad as a means of keeping their grip on the system. Sort of a Syrian version of the Hosni Mubarak/SCAF (Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces) scenario. <br /><br /><b>I love the sound of an IED in the morning</b><br />It remains to be seen what Moscow has to say about all this. Now all bets may be off. It's crucial to examine what Russian President Vladimir Putin will be telling Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip "Assad must go" Erdogan - as in "don't start getting any funny ideas". <br /><br />What seems to be certain is that Assad's inner circle won't fold. On the contrary; it will respond with all guns - and tanks - blazing. It has already threatened to "confront all forms of terrorism and chop any hand that harms national security". <br /><br />The FSA and FSA-related gangs all rely on the same tactic; they get entrenched in residential neighborhoods, even in Damascus, and wait for the regime to attack. The regime's tactic is monolithic; they tend to level any area, even ultra-urban, wherever the gangs are holed up. The result is inevitable; enormous "collateral damage" and massive internal displacement. This may start happening now in Damascus itself - assuming the FSA can keep their sleeper cells active, which they can't. <br /><br />And then there's the newfound Western love story with suicide bombers. <br /><br />Donald Rumsfeld's former Chief of Staff at the Pentagon, Keith Urbahn, tweeted, "for once we should call a suicide bomber - the one that took out a major fraction of Assad's cabinet - a martyr." <br /><br />It doesn't matter that he got it wrong - it was not a suicide bomber but an IED. But according to a <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jul/12/syrian-opposition-doing-the-talking" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">recent investigation</span></a>published in the U.K. <i>Guardian</i>, top figures in the “regime-change” coalition — most notably the SYRIAN National Council (SNC) — have intimate links to the highest ranks of the world elite: the shadowy <a href="http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/crime/item/11590-us-bilderberg-attendees-violating-federal-law-activists-say"><span style="color: blue;">Bilderberg conference</span></a>, the <a href="http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/foreign-policy/item/1213-council-on-foreign-relations"><span style="color: blue;">Council on Foreign Relations</span></a> (CFR), the Goldman Sachs megabank, <a href="http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/crime/item/7494-george-soros-allies-with-the-muslim-brotherhood"><span style="color: blue;">billionaire financier George Soros</span></a>, and, of course, the <a href="http://thenewamerican.com/world-news/asia/item/10463-al-qaeda-the-west-back-syrian-rebels-against-assad"><span style="color: blue;">U.S. government</span></a>. It is all out in the open, too.<br /><br />On top of that, the report suggests that much of the </span><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://thenewamerican.com/world-news/asia/item/11693-as-war-propaganda-implodes-calls-for-syria-intervention-grow"><span style="color: blue;">war propaganda </span></a>being used to promote international military intervention and “revolution” is actually slick public-relations gimmicks financed by large tax-exempt foundations and even the governments being asked to intervene. And there is big money behind the spread of the disinformation. Consider the seemingly never-ending reports about “civilian massacres” blamed on the SYRIAN tyrant — almost always from anonymous “activists” — that continually prove to be exaggerated, fabricated, or even perpetrated by the Western-backed rebels themselves, and then blamed on the regime.  <br /><br />The most recent example occurred just last week when anonymous “activists” </span><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://thenewamerican.com/world-news/asia/item/12079-after-us-uproar-another-syrian-%E2%80%9Ccivilian-massacre%E2%80%9D-story-falls-apart"><span style="color: blue;">prompted the global press and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to claim</span></a> that over 200 civilians, including women and children, had been massacred, only to be contradicted later — even by a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/15/world/middleeast/details-of-a-battle-challenge-reports-of-a-syrian-massacre.html?_r=2&pagewanted=2" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">UN investigation</span></a> and “opposition activists” themselves. What actually happened, as <i>The New American</i> <a href="http://thenewamerican.com/world-news/asia/item/12079-after-us-uproar-another-syrian-%E2%80%9Ccivilian-massacre%E2%80%9D-story-falls-apart"><span style="color: blue;">originally reported</span></a> even before the UN probe, was apparently a battle between armed Western-backed “rebels” and the dictatorship’s military forces that resulted in some deaths of combatants.   <br /><br />So who are the “opposition activists” in reality? “The mainstream news media have, in the main, been remarkably passive when it comes to Syrian sources: billing them simply as ‘official spokesmen’ or ‘pro-democracy campaigners’ without, for the most part, scrutinizing their statements, their backgrounds or their political connections," observed Charlie Skelton in his detailed and well-sourced article for the </span><span style="font-size: large;"><i>Guardian</i>, noting that many of the most frequently quoted sources are openly connected to what he calls "the ANGLO-AMERICAN opposition creation business." As <i>The New American</i> <a href="http://thenewamerican.com/world-news/asia/item/10414-potential-syria-intervention-may-lead-to-wider-war"><span style="color: blue;">documented</span></a> a year ago, many of the SYRIAN "opposition" groups and leaders were being showered with American taxpayer dollars to undermine the regime long before the “Arab Spring” even erupted. <br /><br />Aside from the “anonymous” sources, there are a few opposition players that seem to be doing virtually all of the accusing for the establishment press — not to mention making most of the demands for more “humanitarian” war. The first one cited by Skelton is Bassma Kodmani, one of the top leaders in the “SYRIAN National Council” — a foreign-based umbrella group for some opposition factions, including the extremist Muslim Brotherhood, which is widely touted by the establishment press and Western governments as the primary group representing the “people” of SYRIA. And Kodmani, who continues to loudly demand international military intervention to oust the Assad regime, has open links to the elite. </span><span style="font-size: large;"><br /><br />Consider, for example, that she was at </span><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/crime/item/11590-us-bilderberg-attendees-violating-federal-law-activists-say"><span style="color: blue;">this year’s Bilderberg conference</span></a> in Chantilly, Virginia — a secret yearly meeting of the top global power brokers from media, finance, government, military, intelligence, business, and more, that has come under criticism from across the political spectrum. Kodmani was also at the 2008 Bilderberg conference, though she was listed AS FRENCH then. Now, for reasons that are not entirely clear, her official affiliation is listed only as “international.” <br /><br />Before Bilderberg, Kodmani was a former official with the massive Ford Foundation, an organization that has also </span><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/item/2986-big-tax-exempt-foundations-push-census-activism"><span style="color: blue;">come under fire</span></a> for its controversial efforts to remake the world. More recently, she was serving as the executive director of the "Arab Reform Initiative" for the powerful U.S.-based globalist outfit known as the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) — yet another controversial elite group that is often faced with severe criticism for its<a href="http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/foreign-policy/item/1213-council-on-foreign-relations"><span style="color: blue;"> hostility to national sovereignty, as well as American traditions of self-governance and individual liberty</span></a>. The CFR membership roster includes many of the most influential figures in U.S. politics, business, military, and more. <br /><br />“At this level, the worlds of banking, diplomacy, industry, intelligence, and the various policy institutes and foundations all mesh together, and there, in the middle of it all, is Kodmani,” Skelton pointed out, noting that billionaire leftist financier George Soros, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Goldman Sachs International Chairman Peter Sutherland, as well as countless military and intelligence bosses from the West, were all tied to the “Arab Reform Initiative” in various ways. “A picture is emerging of Kodmani as a trusted lieutenant of the Anglo-American democracy-promotion industry.” Indeed.</span><span style="font-size: large;"><br /><br />Another senior representative of the SNC is Ausama (or Osama) Monajed, the founder and director of Barada Television. The “opposition” TV outfit, U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks showed, was actually being secretly financed with millions of American taxpayers' dollars, starting under the George W. Bush administration. The Syrian regime “would undoubtedly view any U.S. funds going to illegal political groups as tantamount to supporting regime change,”</span><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/us-secretly-backed-syrian-opposition-groups-cables-released-by-wikileaks-show/2011/04/14/AF1p9hwD_story.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;"> noted </span></a>the top U.S. diplomat in Damascus in a 2009 embassy cable. “A reassessment of current U.S.-sponsored programming that supports anti-[government] factions, both inside and outside Syria, may prove productive.”<br /><br />State Department spokesmen later claimed that unconstitutionally showering U.S. taxpayer money on foreign propaganda aimed at fomenting revolution in Syria was not “necessarily” undermining the existing government. Of course, more recently, the U.S. government and assorted Arab dictatorships have been </span><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://thenewamerican.com/world-news/asia/item/10478-obama-backed-syrian-rebels-%E2%80%9Cethnic-cleansing%E2%80%9D-christians"><span style="color: blue;">funneling arms and equipment </span></a>to the rebels, too. Even more aid is expected soon. <br /><br />Another senior figure demanding an international war on Syria is Radwan Ziadeh, until recently a “senior fellow” at the taxpayer-funded, establishment-linked “U.S. Institute of Peace,” and a “visiting fellow” at the London-based Royal Institute of International Affairs — the CFR’s counterpart in the U.K. Also doing much of the talking — including demands that American troops be unconstitutionally deployed to participate in Syria’s civil war — are Hamza Fakher and Michael Weiss, both darlings of the neoconservative, war-mongering establishment. The two are also deeply involved in marketing the proposed military intervention using PR trickery, evidence suggests.   </span><span style="font-size: large;"><br /><br />Commenting on the “amazingly open ties of the Syrian opposition to their Western paymasters,” analyst Daniel McAdams offered a brief summary of the links in a piece for the liberty-minded site LewRockwell.com entitled “</span><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/115545.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Syrian Opposition's Amazing CIA Credentials</span></a>.” His conclusion: “Down to the person these Syrian engines of regime change are products of the US empire and its interventionist, Trotskyite foreign policy of ‘global democratic revolution.’” More than a few observers have echoed those sentiments, especially in recent months, as the true agenda became even more transparent. <br /><br />Meanwhile, one of the primary sources of alleged atrocities in Syria being perpetrated by the Assad regime is known as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a British-based outfit that seems to consist of just one man who passionately despises the Syrian dictatorship. Establishment media outlets around the world have written countless stories based just on this one entity — almost always presenting it as an unbiased observer merely reporting the facts on the ground. But what is the SOHR really? </span><span style="font-size: large;"><br /><br />“One would believe this to be a giant sprawling organization with hundreds of members working hard on the ground, documenting evidence in Syria with photographs and video, while coordinating with foreign press to transparently and objectively ‘observe’ the ‘human rights’ conditions in Syria, as well as demonstrate their methodologies. The hardest thing I've ever done

Tyring to get back into diet and exercise after months of not really "being into it", is a huge struggle for me. <br /><br />I remember many Weight Watcher meetings where our leader would say, "you know, losing weight isn't rocket science" or "this isn't the hardest thing you've ever done". Then she'd ask things like: Did you graduate college? Did you have a baby? Have you raised a child? Have you ever been married? Have you lost someone you loved?" She always name off several things that every person in the room had experienced, usually not just one of the things, but several of them. Then she would say, compare exercising and eating less to that experience. Then she'd followup with, losing weight is easy in comparison to any of those things. Everyone in the room would nod in agreement.<br /><br />These days I'm not so sure I'd nod in agreement. I'm really feeling challenged. It feels like the hardest thing I've ever done.<br /><br />I almost made it through yesterday perfectly. Unfortunately, by the time I got home at 9pm I was too wiped out to care about much of anything, much less myself. It was a long work day of fixing major bugs on one of the most challenging projects I've ever worked on at work, with constantly moving requirements. It had a release date that was originally two months ago and now we don't even have a release date (too many issues to set a firm date yet).<br /><br />When I got home I needed to work on my most challenging personal project, losing weight. I had nothing left to give to myself. I was exhausted. I had taken my workout clothes to work, with the intention of going to the gym after work since I couldn't force myself to get up early enough to go before work. Of course, at 9pm I didn't go. I was mentally and physically wiped out.<br /><br />After a healthy breakfast and lunch, dinner was a piece of deli fried chicken, left over from a couple days ago. Two Pomegranate frozen fruit bars for dessert. Then bed. No vegetables and no fruit.<br /><br />I woke up feeling exhausted. I weighed today, 218.8. Not much of an improvement from the 220 yesterday, but I'll take it. At least I didn't gain another pound.<br /><br />Today is simple. Eat healthy, count calories, exercise. Exercise...I'm not sure when or how that became such a huge challenge for me. I'm not sure how I managed to exercise almost every day for four years and then totally drop out. It's like nightmare come true. Gaining a ton of weight and becoming sedentary.<br /><br />I guess it's just one day at a time, as so many bloggers say. There's not much else I can do except to keep trying. Maybe today will be the day I get my act together again. Let's hope so. I really don't want this to be the hardest thing I've ever done.

This article is sure to spark controversy and be embraced by those who want to keep a traditional classroom in rows where kids listen to lecture. While I'm not in an ivory tower, my experience in the power of the face to face classroom has convinced me that when I teach and integrate all different senses that students learn better. I've also seen (and quoted in Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds in the Choice chapter that discusses differentiation) that dual encoding (listening to words while reading them) improves the ability to learn to read. (I'll have to look in the book for the sources of research.) I do think, however, there are some good points here, although I firmly believe their conclusion that students are going to learn no matter how they relate to content -- is inaccurate. The lines are being drawn between those who want to change and use technology and those who want the status quo. Nonetheless, if you lose your ability to read things you do not agree with, and engage in thoughtful conversation, then you miss the point of being well educated. In this article, it discusses how inquiry-based learning projects are driven by students. This very much aligns with the questions we ask on the Flat Classroom and other projects. The one point of meaning that I'm working to understand (and finding different answers depending upon the site) is that some differentiate that students should develop the questions rather than teachers "handing them" the questions. I have a lesson plan I sent through Diigo where the instructor designed a lesson around the question "Can there be giants?" and called in inquiry based. Under this article, it may not be called true inquiry based, and yet, I'm wondering if the question is intriguing and of interest and can be used in a way to teach if it really matters where the question originates.   My class is a mix of student-created inquiries (Freshman project) and project-generated inquiries (Digiteen, Flat Classroom). "Inquiry-based learning" is one of many terms used to describe educational approaches that are driven more by a learner's questions than by a teacher's lessons. This article from the Washington Post is worth a read.  "But the extended day approach being implemented in many schools as a result of the department’s push to increase instructional time  falls short.  It largely ignores the deep body of research on what makes effective expanded learning.   Instead, too many schools are merely adding another hour or so of regular class time onto the school day.  Not surprisingly, two very recent studies suggest we might not accomplish much with this approach to improving schools.
