Ezhimala Naval Academy to set up herbal garden – The New Indian Express [ BeritaTerkini ]

<p>Doing their bit for the conservation of indigenous medicinal plants, the Ezhimala Indian Naval Academy is all set to launch an Oushadha poonkavanam (garden of medicinal plants) in two separate spots on its campus in Kannur district.</p> <p>It was a news report that appeared in Express that inspired Naval Academy Base Commander Santhosh Pillai to set up herbal a garden there.</p> <p>The Oushadha poonkavanam project, a joint effort of the Naval Academy and Hamsa Madikai, a ninth generation member of the family of Sufi healers, focuses on preserving  endangered medicinal plants.</p> <p> The mission plans to integrate cultivation with popularising  the need to cultivate plants.</p> <p>“Nobody can wash his hands of the obligation to preserve the disappearing greenery,” said Commander Santhosh.</p> <p> “How healthy would it be especially for the cadets if they wake up breathing fresh air from the medicinal plants! Here, we already have a good collection of medicinal plants and this project is an attempt to widen our collection,” he said.</p> <p>“If people from other walks of lives are also interested in the green mission it can take a giant leap forward in the protection of nature,” he added.</p> <p>As an initial step, ahead of the launch, Hamsa Madikai took a one-day class on the importance of medicinal plants, for the cadets.</p> <p>“If one cadet on the campus gets a thorough knowledge about the application of a minimum of five herbals, it would be the success of the project,” said Hamsa Madikai.</p> <p> “We want to make the present generation the custodians of traditional medicines. Vaidyar Hamsa Madikai grows around 1,424 varieties of medicinal plants, of which 800 herbs are rare.</p> <p> Around 500 medicinal plants, including aloe wood, elephant creeper, Ashoka tree, sandal tree, Indian ginseng, broom creeper, Malabar gulbel, lavender, peppermint, parsley, three-leaved-caper, arrowleaf sida, rosary pea, asparagus, red sandalwood, neem, brahmi, garcinia and many more will be planted on the five-acre land allotted for the garden.</p> <p>He will supply the medicinal plants for the academy without charging any money.</p> <p> Vaidyar Hamsa, hailing from Madikai in Kasaragod, embarked on the mission to save rare herbal remedies by launching herbal groves last year. As part of his mission he also sets up oushadha poonkavanams in schools across the state.  M Kunhiraman, state president of the Oushadha Sasya Padana Bala Sabha, run by Vaidyar Hamsa, said the Naval Academy had shown an exemplary model for society. At the end of mass, the Roman Catholic congregation broke into applause.</p> <p>Rosario Capidos, 55, sat crying in one row, hugging her nine-year-old grandson, Cyrich.</p> <p>Capidos had been sheltering at home with nine other members of her family when Haiyan struck on November 8. As the waters rose, she floated her three grandchildren on a slab of styrofoam through a road flooded with debris and shipping containers to a nearby Chinese temple. He has been criticized for the slow pace of aid distribution and unclear estimates of casualties, especially in Tacloban, capital of hardest-hit Leyte province.</p> <p>There are 1,186 people missing, according to the national count. The official death toll has only risen by 60 since Friday, giving hope that initial local estimates of 10,000 dead were overstated.</p> <p>The government estimated damage to infrastructure and agriculture at about 10 billion pesos ($ 230 million), the bulk of it in the farming sector. The United Nations warned that economic and human cost could rise if aid did not reach farmers in rice-growing regions in time for the next planting season in December and January.</p> <p>It also said that fishing, another crucial food source, had been placed in jeopardy by the storm.</p> <p>“The destruction of boats, fishing gear, fish ponds and related equipment left many families with no means of livelihood and decreased protein intake,” the U.N. Louisville held the ball for 12:24 in the period, and Houston never recovered.</p><br /><p>'If we're going to hold an opponent to 20 points, we feel like we're in a good chance to win the football game with what we do offensively,' Houston coach Tony Levine said. 'I felt like we had opportunities, we had possessions offensively to get that done, and we just didn't.'</p><br /><p>Brown's second TD led to frustration for Houston safety Adrian McDonald, who was ejected for punching Louisville offensive lineman Kamran Joyer several times on the play.</p><br /><p>The game marked Louisville's first Saturday night contest in five years and its first meeting against Houston since a 65-27 victory in 2004 -- their second straight 60-point performance against the Cougars.</p><br /><p>Houston looked poised to jump on the Cardinals right away when Demarcus Ayers returned the opening kickoff 61 yards with the help of five missed tackles, and the Cougars moved 11 yards for a first down at the Louisville 28. After three straight incompletions, they gambled on fourth down instead of kicking a field goal into the wind, but John O'Korn's slant pass to Xavier Maxwell came up 5 yards short.</p><br /><p>Brown's running quickly got the Cardinals on the board, carrying seven times for 44 yards, including the touchdown run off left tackle. Wallace's first field goal two drives later put Louisville up 10-0.</p><br /><p>Houston needed just two drives to tie the game, driving 48 yards for Kyle Bullard's 46-yard field goal and 60 yards ending in Kenneth Farrow's 4-yard run with 6:35 left before halftime. Those drives were telling as the Cougars' no-huddle offense seemed to confuse the Cardinals' defense, which struggled to keep up.</p><br /><p>Defensively, Houston succeeded in pressuring Bridgewater, sacking him twice and keeping him on the run at other times.</p><br /><p>Two key plays helped the Cougars take a 13-10 lead. The first was Michaelee Harris' muffed punt recovered at the Louisville 39 by Trevon Stewart, who entered leading the nation with eight turnovers.</p><br /><p>Louisville appeared to escape damage when Hakeem Smith intercepted O'Korn's tipped pass at the 15 and returned it to the 35. But Cardinals defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin was penalized for roughing O'Korn, wiping out the turnover and setting up first down at the 24 and leading to Bullard's 22-yard field goal with 25 seconds left in the half.</p><br /><p>The Cardinals quickly snatched the momentum away from the Cougars with Brown leading the way.</p><br /><p>'We got kind of complacent and got comfortable,' Louisville coach Charlie Strong said of the first half. He burst onto the scene as a high school freshman, and his recruitment picked up rather quickly. Michigan State was the heavy favorite early on, and the Spartans still seemed to be the leader prior to the AAU season. Kentucky made its play and moved to the forefront – before falling back rather quickly. Late in the summer, it appeared Kansas and Illinois were the ones with momentum, but DePaul and Memphis also had their moments in the sun for Alexander. The Fighting Illini had most of the momentum the past couple of weeks, but an unofficial visit last weekend to Lawrence stemmed the tide and the Jayhawks restaked their claim. The relationship between Kansas assistant Jerrance Howard (who recruited Alexander while he was at Illinois) and Alexander, as well as the fact Alexander's girlfriend attends Kansas, were keys.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0.6em;">Alexander, a 6-foot-9 big man from Curie (Ill.), is ranked No. 3 in the <a href="http://247sports.com/Season/2014-Basketball/CompositeRankings?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool" style="color: #6e8dcf; text-decoration: none;">247Sports Composite</a>for the class of 2014. He is as college-ready as anyone in the country, and his strength and build will enable him to be a dominant force next season in the Big 12. Alexander is an extremely strong rebounder, and his 260-lb. frame gives him the edge in most battles on the boards. He's very tough and has a good motor. Once he develops consistent back-to-the-basket moves, Alexander is going to be an absolute force.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0.6em;">Kansas only has two commitments in the class of 2014, but they are both elite-level players. Alexander joins five-star small forward Kelly Oubre, the No. 7-ranked player in the 247Sports Composite. He chose Kansas over Kentucky last month. But Bill Self probably isn't done in 2014. Texas big man Myles Turner is still a target, and an interesting prospect to watch could be five-star guard Jaquan Lyle. Video Game Sales Up Ahead of Console Releases

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><img src="http://www4.pcmag.com/media/images/389123-female-gamer.jpg?thumb=y" width="600"/> </p><br /><p>U.S. video game retail sales increased for a third consecutive month in October as gamers geared up for the release of Sony and Microsoft's next-generation consoles, according to new data from The NPD Group.</p><br /><p>The gaming industry last month brought in $791.1 million in retail sales of new hardware, software, and accessories, up 5 percent over October 2012, NPD said. NPD's Liam Callahan estimated that used and rental sales for the month totaled $89 million while digital format sales like mobile apps and social network games brought in an impressive $491 million, bringing total U.S. video game sales to 'just over' $1.3 billion in October.</p><br /><p>The retail increases were largely driven by software sales, which climbed 10 percent from a year ago to $495.1 million, and accessory sales, which grew a modest 1 percent to $136.9 million. Hardware sales expectantly declined in October, falling 8 percent to $482.5 million as gamers waited for new systems to hit the market, though portable hardware sales minimized decreases in this segment of the market.</p><br /><p>October marked the sixth consecutive month that the Nintendo 3DS led overall hardware sales. As for consoles, the Xbox 360 moved back to the top spot after PlayStation 3 took the crown in September.</p><br /><p>Meanwhile, growth on the software side was driven by continued strong sales of Grand Theft Auto 5 and the launch of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y , Callahan said. GTA 5 was the top-selling game for the second month in a row, selling 'just fewer' than 1.1 million units, while Pokémon X and Pokémon Y came in second and third, respectively. Photograph: James Perrin/Rex Features</p> </div> <div id="article-body-blocks"> <p>London has become a cycling city – and Britain something of a cycling nation – by default. The recent surge in its popularity has been a grassroots phenomenon, prompted by overcrowded and expensive public transport, a large number of young, talented people on low wages and a wider recognition of its health and environmental benefits.</p> <p>As demonstrated by the recent toll of cycling fatalities, the response from the authorities has been slow, inadequate and, in the case of the appalling Cycle Superhighway 2 in east London, counterproductive. There has been no sense of urgency about improving cyclists’ safety. Transport for London’s long-awaited freight strategy to reduce lorry journeys at peak times to avoid conflict with cyclists has not materialised, despite the fact that during the Olympics a very similar scheme was successfully deployed.</p> <p>While cycling remains relatively safe, TfL’s statistics show that every journey carries a 10% greater risk of resulting in a serious injury or death than in 2008. The Cycling Vision drawn up by Boris Johnson’s cycling tsar, the journalist Andrew Gilligan, is commendable, but lacks both urgency and the coherent thread that would deliver safe cycling for all.</p> <p>One of London’s rival global cities, New York, is demonstrating what could be done immediately. The city’s transport commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, has embarked on a radical plan to improve the lot of pedestrians and cyclists. Times Square, for decades a permanent traffic jam, has been turned into a space so peaceful that the city authorities installed deckchairs in the summer; local businesses have boomed.</p> <p>Crucially, it’s not just Times Square – 50 spaces in suburban centres have been improved in the same way. All this has been done quickly and experimentally, allowing unsuccessful aspects to be reversed, using principally, as Ms Sadik-Khan put it, “paint and plastic” to reroute traffic and create usable spaces.</p> <p>This is not, as she emphasises in a brilliant TED talk available online, just about cycling. Creating a city fit for cyclists also ensures it is a better place in which to live and work. The lesson from New York is that things can change and quickly. What is needed is a strong political vision and the boldness to implement it.</p> <p>Take Seville, often reckoned too hot and cramped for cyclists, which has gone from 2,000 cycle trips per day to 72,000 in seven years, thanks to mayor Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín’s strategy of building cycle lanes, reducing road space for cars and launching a cycle hire scheme. That answers the naysayers who argue that London is not Amsterdam or its streets are too narrow.</p> <p>Britain is dependent for its future on attracting bright young people, They are the ones most likely to hop on their bikes and consequently they make up a disproportionate number of these tragedies. Leading up to the fight this week, UFC boss Dana White gushed to reporters about the passion of GSP: “When you’re as rich as Georges St-Pierre is, to stay that mentally tough and to keep having the drive and the passion to win that he does, that’s what separates him from all the rest.” When asked how wealthy the 32-year-old Canadian was, White didn’t mince words: “He’s rich. He’s very rich.”</div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">White should know. He is the one that signs the checks that make up the bulk of the income for the man known as Rush. GSP made roughly $9 million combined for his past two fights, according to multiple sources close to the fighter. His current annual income outside the octagon from endorsements, memorabilia and licensing adds another $3 million. The numbers back it up. UFC 158 in March where GSP pummeled Nick Diaz, racked up the sport’s biggest PPV numbers in three years with 950,000 buys. With the HD version of UFC 167 costing $55, the addition of GSP can mean more than $30 million in PPV revenue compared to a non-GSP event. He also earned “Fight of the Night” bonuses in two of his past four fights that were worth $70,000 and $100,000 respectively. But the big money is in PPV. Top UFC fighters receive a cut of PPV revenue on top of their guarantees and bonuses. By cutting the champion fighters in on the PPV action, White ensures that the stars of MMA will promote the UFC events to help drive up the PPV gross. St-Pierre is practically guaranteed $3 million per fight before stepping into the octagon based on his past PPV audiences, but the numbers can climb quickly. The 950,000 PPV buys for UFC 158 meant a $5 million payday for Rush. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><img src="http://media2.newsobserver.com/smedia/2013/11/16/18/51/195-tQfoS.AuSt.55.jpeg" width="600"/><br /><p>- Six straight wins had put No. 23 Texas back in the polls, in control of its Big 12 destiny and tempered speculation that Mack Brown's job was on the line.</p><br /><p>The worst home loss in Brown's 16 years at Texas just undid all of that.</p><br /><p>Case McCoy threw for 221 yards but had three interceptions and No. 12 Oklahoma State beat the Longhorns 38-13 on Saturday. The blowout dealt Texas its worst loss at home under Brown and did so at a time when questions over his job security had just begun quieting down amid a midseason resurgence.</p><br /><p>But in getting clobbered by the Cowboys, the Longhorns looked more like the shaky team that fired its defensive coordinator between early losses to BYU and Ole Miss before turning things around. Now they'll have to do so again but with just two games left, including playing at No. 4 Baylor.</p><br /><p>'I'm disappointed,' Brown said. 'I don't get stunned about anything anymore.'</p><br /><p>A resurgent Texas had just returned to the Top 25 after a two-month absence. Now the Longhorns (7-3, 6-1) are almost certain to fall unranked again, but more costly in this blowout was relinquishing control of their destiny in the Big 12.</p><br /><p>Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more as the Cowboys (9-1, 6-1) won in Austin for the third straight time. They've now pulled off six straight wins since an early stumble against West Virginia, and have kept looking like the Big 12 contenders that many predicted to start the season.</p><br /><p>'We understand how big the game is. I'm not sure if at times everybody wants to say that that's a heck of a win, but it is what it is,' Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. 'You very seldom go on the road and win by more than three touchdowns with teams that are undefeated in conference play in the middle of November.'</p><br /><p>Oklahoma State still has yet to face undefeated Baylor, which was playing Texas Tech later Saturday. The Cowboys host the Bears next week.</p><br /><p>Chelf threw for 197 yards and an interception. He was also Oklahoma State's leading rusher, running for 95 yards that were largely piled up with long sprints from the shotgun that cut through the middle of the Texas defense.</p><br /><p>Texas running back Malcolm Brown ran for 79 yards and a touchdown.</p><br /><p>Texas' previous worst loss at home under Brown was a 34-12 defeat by UCLA in 2010. The Longhorns now have now been blown out at home twice this season after losing 44-23 to Ole Miss in September.</p><br /><p>A close first half turned into a runaway behind two near-misses by Texas in a span of less than a minute. First up was Texas safety Adrian Phillips missing a would-be interception in the end zone, with the ball ricocheting off his hands and into the arms of Tracy Moore for an Oklahoma State touchdown.</p><br /><p>Even more deflating for Texas was the ensuing Texas drive, when Cowboys safety Justin Gilbert picked off McCoy just 18 seconds before halftime and returned it 43 yards for another score.</p><br /><p>McCoy finished 26 for 39 for 221 yards and would throw two more interceptions. Linebacker Caleb Lavey picked off one of them, running it back to Texas' 21 to set up a Chelf touchdown pass to Charlie Moore on the very next play.</p><br /><p>'The quarterback goes out and throws three picks, you're not going to win the ballgame,' McCoy said. 'It's very rare that happens. So it's on me, my team knows it's on me, and we're going to get it fixed and go win.'</p><br /><p>Charlie Moore led all Oklahoma State receivers with six catches for 83 yards.</p><br /><p>Oklahoma State played without leading wide receiver Josh Stewart, who didn't make the trip after appearing to injure his left leg in a win over Kansas last week. Stewart is also the nation's leading punt returner, but aside from understudy David Glidden bobbling a few catches, the Cowboys hardly noticed his absence.</p><br /><p>On hand to watch Brown's worst loss ever at Royal Memorial Stadium was new athletic director Steve Patterson, who was hired from Arizona State earlier this month to replace DeLoss Dodds. Patterson has said he doesn't intend to 'make change just for the sake of making changes' as he takes over the nation's wealthiest athletic department.</p><br /><p>Brown began the season talking about Texas being ready to compete for a national title again after a run of uneven seasons since losing to Alabama in the title game in 2009. But the Longhorns instead started out by losing badly to BYU on the road and getting blown out at home by Ole Miss.</p><br /><p>Speculation about Brown's future intensified after revelations that the agent of Alabama coach Nick Saban had talked to University of Texas regents a few days after the Crimson Tide won the national championship last season.</p><br /><p>Follow Paul J. No. 12 South Carolina deals Florida its fifth consecutive loss

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>COLUMBIA, S.C. - For three quarters, beaten down Florida stayed with South Carolina but the Gamecocks responded in the fourth quarter with the drive it needed to get past the Gators to edge closer to an SEC East title with a hard fought 19-14 win.</p><br /><p>Trailing 14-13 from its own 5 early in the fourth quarter, South Carolina tailback Shon Carson - playing with starter Mike Davis on the bench nursing an ankle injury - broke loose up the middle for a 58-yard run. Carson finished 102 yards on 13 carries. That moved the ball to the Gators' 37. On third-and-9 from the Florida 36, Connor Shaw hit Rory Anderson over the middle for a 34-yard gain to the 2.</p><br />BOX SCORE: HIGHLIGHTS: How the top 25 fared Gamecocks 19, Gators 14<br /><p>Anderson pulled the ball in while sandwiched between UF defenders Jaylen Watkins and Neiron Ball. On fourth-and-goal, Elliott Fry converted a 22-yard field goal, his third of four in the game, to put the Gamecocks on top with 6:43 left in the game.</p><br /><p>Auburn's 43-38 win against Georgia in the first half was greeted with a loud cheer from the season-high 83,853 fans at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Bulldogs loss meant South Carolina (8-2 overall, 6-2 in SEC play) just had to beat Florida then have Missouri lose one of its final league games.</p><br /><p>The Gamecocks own the tiebreaker with Mizzou after beating the Tigers 27-24 in double overtime. Florida has lost five consecutive games and needs to beat Georgia Southern and Florida State in the final two regular season games to avoid not going to a bowl game, when not under NCAA sanctions, for the first time since 1979's 0-10-1 team. It's also the first five-game losing streak for UF since '79.</p><br /><p>For a half, Florida looked closer to the team that won 11 games last season - holding South Carolina to a pair of Fry field goals from 25 and 45 yards while rushing for 169, leading 14-6 at the break. It was the first time since the Oct. 5 game against Arkansas (a 17-7 advantage) that the Gators led at the half.</p><br /><p>Kelvin Taylor scored on touchdown runs of 20 and 29 yards for both of the Gators' first half scores. <div id="yom-ad-LREC" class="yom-ad yom-ad-LREC"> <center> <div id="yom-ad-LREC-iframe" class="yom-ad"></div> </center> </div> <p><br></p> <div class="body-slot-container"> <div class="body-slot-mod"> <div class="yom-remote"> <div class="yom-loading" id="mediacontentrelatedstory_container"></div> </div> </div> </div> <p>Federal health officials say that defects in some Medtronic devices used in heart procedures are severe enough that they could cause serious injury or death.</p> <p>The warning covers about 15,000 recalled guidewires, which are inserted through an artery and used to guide other devices into place, such as stents to hold open blocked arteries.</p> <p>A recall of the guidewires began Oct. 21 after Medtronic received reports of four complaints, including one patient who went into cardiac arrest but was resuscitated, company spokesman Joseph McGrath said Saturday.</p> <p>The recall notice warned hospitals and distributors worldwide that coating on the guidewires could break off, which could raise the possibility of blocking a blood vessel. The wires are coated to make them slide through blood vessels more easily.</p> <p>Medtronic announced Friday night that the Food and Drug Administration had classified the recall as Class I, a category reserved for products with reasonable potential to cause serious injury or death.</p> <p>The Minneapolis company said the recall affected certain lots made since April. The company said it has taken steps to prevent new shipments of the wires. The drug doesn’t just target a man’s nether lands, either: the vessel dilating effect has been used to treat newborns with pulmonary hypertension, increasing blood flow to the lungs.</p> <div class="inset_placeholder" id="inset_placeholder_5846896"></div> <p>But it’s not hard to imagine how placebo effect mixed with a covert dose of little blue pill could make a cock-conscious dude who’d just spent $ 19.99 plus shipping and handling think he’d won the pipe lottery. Hey, don’t question a good thing, right?</p> <p>Unfortunately, bad things can happen when you don’t know which prescription-strength drugs you’re taking. The 6-foot-1 guard found gaps in Marquette's interior defense, then extended the lead to 44-28 with 6:31 left on a layup on the break.</p><br /><p>Todd Mayo led Marquette (2-1) with 11 points. It was the school's first loss at the Bradley Center since Vanderbilt beat the Golden Eagles 74-57 on Dec. 29, 2011.</p><br /><p>Only South Dakota State (30) had a longer winning streak in the country entering Saturday.</p><br /><p>It certainly didn't help that the Golden Eagles had 20 turnovers and shot just 10 of 53 (19 percent) for the afternoon, including 4 of 24 (17 percent) in the second half.</p><br /><p>Scott and Craft had all the fun on Marquette's home floor.</p><br /><p>Tied at 19 at halftime, the game opened up with Ohio State finally finding room inside to maneuver.</p><br /><p>Center Amir Williams started the spurt by muscling out Chris Otule in the post for a basket. Then Williams sealed off Otule in the lane to allow Scott to go in for an uncontested layup.</p><br /><p>After forcing a steal of Jake Thomas, Scott sped down the court and drew a foul on a stutter-step jumper. Lenzelle Smith Jr. lowered his head driving the baseline and flipped up a tough shot around Marquette's big men for a 31-23 lead with 16:21 left.</p><br /><p>Coach Buzz Williams called a timeout that briefly settled his team before the Buckeyes pulled away again.</p><br /><p>Ohio State had just three turnovers in the second half to 10 for the Golden Eagles, who are breaking in a new backcourt with last year's starting trio of Vander Blue, Junior Cadougan and Trent Lockett all gone.</p><br /><p>Whatever the reason, Ohio State found its rhythm on the fastbreak, with a 16-0 edge, including 12-0 in the second half.</p><br /><p>The bruising first half featured tussles under the bucket, plenty of rebounds and lots of missed shots. The teams combined to shoot 13 of 55 in a half that ended in a 19-all tie on Buckeye forward Marc Loving's 3 from the corner with 7 seconds left.</p><br /><p>The Golden Eagles had briefly taken control with an 8-0 midway for an 18-14 lead with 4:47 left through the half by making tough shots in the lane, mainly with Ohio State center Amir Williams on the bench.</p><br /><p>The 6-foot-11 Williams was otherwise a big problem for Marquette with five blocks, four in the first half.</p><br /><p>The run also came after a timeout during which typically energetic Williams took off his jacket, exposing a light dress shirt already soaked with sweat.</p><br /><p>Marquette managed to outrebound Ohio State 50-34. Quarterback Nick Marshall threw a 73-yard Hail Mary pass that was tipped by two Georgia defensive backs and caught by Tigers receiver Ricardo Lewis, who ran it in for the game-winning touchdown with 25 seconds left. It was a play you had to see to believe.</p><br /><p>Final score: Auburn 43, Georgia 38.</p><br /><img src="http://images.ftw.usatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/aub.gif" width="600"/><br /><p>The ninth-ranked Tigers dominated the whole game and had 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. Did the FBI use Jeremy Hammond to hack foreign governments?

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p>Yesterday, former Anonymous, Lulzsec, and Antisec hacker Jeremy Hammond (Anarchaos) was sentenced to 10 years, after pleading guilty to the hacking of Strator, a global private intelligence company. Upon the objections of federal prosecutors, Jude Loretta Preska struck portions of Hammond's sentencing statement. These stricken portions later surfaced on the internet some time after the sentencing. In them, Hammond suggests the federal government supplied Hammond and other hackers with foreign government targets.</p><br /><p>In his statement, Hammond claimed Sabu supplied 'lists of targets that were vulnerable to 'zero day exploits''-that is, previously unknown security holes. He also emphasized that pilfered files (including the Stratfor data) were stored on Sabu's server, which was operated by the FBI.</p><br /><p>'At [Sabu's] request, these websites were broken into, their emails and databases were uploaded to Sabu's FBI server, and the password information and the location of root backdoors were supplied,' stated Hammond to the court. 'These intrusions took place in January/February of 2012 and affected over 2000 domains, including numerous foreign government websites in Brazil, Turkey, Syria, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Nigeria, Iran, Slovenia, Greece, Pakistan, and others.'</p><br /><p>Looking at that list, all but Puerto Rico and perhaps Slovenia are strategic US targets for one reason or another. Brazil is increasingly become a rival economic competitor in the Western hemisphere; Turkey is a bulwark against Iran and other volatile Islamic dictatorships; hacking Syrian government websites is self-evident (more on that below); and so on.</p><br /><p>Hammond recollected the compromised websites being 'the official website of the Governor of Puerto Rico, the Internal Affairs Division of the Military Police of Brazil, the Official Website of the Crown Prince of Kuwait, the Tax Department of Turkey, the Iranian Academic Center for Education and Cultural Research, the Polish Embassy in the UK, and the Ministry of Electricity of Iraq.'</p><br /><p>Syria's inclusion on this list should raise eyebrows. It's easy to forget that with 2013 being a year of such escalating civil war bloodshed, Syria was already a target for hackers several years prior. And remember that in 2011 Anonymous made a lot of noise about hacking Syria's Ministry of Defense website.</p><br /><p>'To the Syrian people: The world stands with you against the brutal regime of Bashar Al-Assad,' read Anonymous's message in both English and Arabic. ' ... To the Syrian military: You are responsible for protecting the Syrian people, and anyone who orders you to kill women, children, and the elderly deserves to be tried for treason. No outside enemy could do as much damage to Syria as Bashar Al-Assad has done. Defend your country - rise up against the regime!'</p><br /><img src="http://deathandtaxesmag.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/jeremy-hammond-Free-Hammond-by-molly-crabapple-620x424-1.jpg" width="600"/><small>Free Hammond by Molly Crabapple</small><br /><p>Also recall that the Syrian Electronic Army formed in 2011 in response to these hacks, and didn't really hit its stride until 2012. According to Hammond, the FBI gained access to Syrian systems and data through the puppeteering of Sabu.</p><br /><p>'Sabu ... infiltrated a group of hackers that had access to hundreds of Syrian systems including government institutions, banks, and ISPs,' Hammond stated. 'He logged several relevant IRC channels persistently asking for live access to mail systems and bank transfer details. The FBI took advantage of hackers who wanted to help support the Syrian people against the Assad regime, who instead unwittingly provided the U.S. government access to Syrian systems, undoubtedly supplying useful intelligence to the military and their buildup for war.'</p><br /><p>Hammond said that all of this can be 'easily confirmed by chat logs the government provided' to Anonymous; made possible, of course, by the federal government's discovery obligations in Hammond's case.</p><br /><p>'However, the full extent of the FBI's abuses remains hidden,' stated Hammond, striking a rather ominous tone. 'Because I pled guilty, I do not have access to many documents that might have been provided to me in advance of trial, such as Sabu's communications with the FBI. In addition, the majority of the documents provided to me are under a 'protective order' which insulates this material from public scrutiny. As government transparency is an issue at the heart of my case, I ask that this evidence be made public. I believe the documents will show that the government's actions go way beyond catching hackers and stopping computer crimes.'</p><br />Read the rest of the Jeremy Hammond's powerfully eloquent sentencing statement here.<br /><p>Elsewhere in his sentencing statement, Hammond admitted he didn't how other data supplied to Sabu was used by the government. The hacker suggested, however, that the government's collection and use of this data should be investigated. 'The government celebrates my conviction and imprisonment, hoping that it will close the door on the full story,' Hammond added. 'I took responsibility for my actions, by pleading guilty, but when will the government be made to answer for its crimes?'</p><br /><p>If Hammond is right, then the FBI and, indeed, President Obama have some serious 'splaining to do. And the fact that portions of Hammond's statement were stricken by Judge Preska is also troubling. Even if Hammond were wrong about the FBI's feeding of targets to Sabu, the federal prosecutor's objections Hammond's accusations, allowed by Preska, is a vile form of censorship.</p><br /></div>

Brooklyn Vegan reports that the “Special Memorial Evening/Fundraiser” will be held at Brooklyn Bowl and will feature performances from Nada Surf, James Chance, Luke Temple, Dirty Fences, TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone, the Clean’s Hamish Kilgour and more. There will also be DJ sets from Interpol’s Paul Banks, Jonathan Toubin, and Vito & Druzzi from the Rapture.</p> <p></p> <p>The Yellow Dogs Open Up About Their Nightmare in Brooklyn</p> <p></p> <p>The Brooklyn indie music community was shocked on Monday to learn of the brutal early-morning shooting that took the lives of two members of the dance-punk group, who had emigrated to the U.S. from Iran in 2011. Another Iranian musician, Ali Akbar Mohammadi Raffi, reportedly used a semi-automatic rifle to gun down guitarist Soroush Farazmand and his brother Arash, the band’s drummer, along with their friend Ali Eskandarian. Raffi then fatally shot himself in the head on the roof of the East Williamsburg building where the band lived. </p> <p></p> <p>“We were closer than brothers,” the Yellow Dogs’ lead singer, Siavash Karampour, recently told <em>Rolling Stone</em> of his departed bandmates. “I wish all this attention was just for a new release of an album.
