New Year's Resolutions

In fact, the first nine and a half months were nothing but sunny skies, climbing ratings, and flowing wine…and then?<br /><br />Tragedy struck when my best friend, soul mate, and <strike>bane of</strike> reason for my existence, Schmoop, took ill in late-October, thereby shattering our stained glass window of happiness and success, and kicking us to the curb of life just like the Gospels of Thomas and Mary Magdalene being kicked out of inclusion into the Bible, lo those many centuries ago…or something.<br /><br />Anyhoo…<br /><br />Some things that I do, and some character flaws that I have depress even me, so I am going to work on those and hopefully improve my karma, and thereby my life and luck, and hope that the fickle face of fate smiles down upon Schmoop and I in 2013.<br /><br />I am going to eat healthier.  We are big fans of frozen pizzas here in the Bagwine digs, but sometimes I devour a Totino’s Triple Meat Pizza.  I think that perhaps this year, when I decide on a frozen Totino’s pizza, I will curb my carnivorous avarice and go with a mere pepperoni or sausage pizza.  Why do I have to eat THREE meats when one will suffice?<br /><br />I am going to discontinue being such a sarcastic prick, especially on Facebook.  I mean, c’mon?  Sure, I laugh out loud in the confines of my living room as I make fun of others, but seriously, where does it get me? As with fevers, there are many causes, from drugs and alcohol to head injuries and dementias. It has had a chilling effect. After mass murders, our airwaves are filled with unfounded speculations about video games, our culture of hedonism and our loss of religious faith, while psychiatrists, the ones who know the most about severe mental illness, are largely marginalized.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Severely ill people like Mr. Lanza fall through the cracks, in part because school counselors are more familiar with anxiety and depression than with psychosis. Hospitalizations for acute onset of schizophrenia have been shortened to the point of absurdity. Insurance companies and families try to get patients out of hospitals as quickly as possible because of the prohibitively high cost of care.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">As documented by writers like the law professor <a href="http://lawweb.usc.edu/contact/contactInfo.cfm?detailID=300" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">Elyn R. Saks</a>, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/23/health/23livesside.html" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">author</a> of the memoir "The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness," medication and treatment work. The vast majority of people with schizophrenia, treated or untreated, are not violent, though they are more likely than others to commit violent crimes. When treated with medication after a rampage, many perpetrators who have shown signs of schizophrenia — including John Lennon's killer and Ronald Reagan's would-be assassin — have recognized the heinousness of their actions and expressed deep remorse.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">It takes a village to stop a rampage. We need reasonable controls on semiautomatic weapons; criminal penalties for those who sell weapons to people with clear signs of psychosis; greater insurance coverage and capacity at private and public hospitals for lengthier care for patients with schizophrenia; intense public education about how to deal with schizophrenia; greater willingness to seek involuntary commitment of those who pose a threat to themselves or others; and greater incentives for psychiatrists (and other mental health professionals) to treat the disorder, rather than less dangerous conditions.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">Too many people with acute schizophrenia have gone untreated. There have been too many Glocks, too many kids and adults cut down in their prime. But 10 minutes later, about the time the second and third nitro pill were making the pain dissipate, the doctor showed up with the result of my cardiac enzyme blood test. It's supposed to be 0, but mine was much higher. And, he said, that weird somersault feeling I was having right at that moment at the base of my throat was actually tachycardia, a rapid heart rate. Before he was even done talking, an ambulance crew was waiting to take me to a bigger hospital 30 minutes away for a cardiac catheterization.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">A little balloon angioplasty through the groin? I could deal with that, and maybe I could convince them to let me go back to the cottage in time for dessert. Instead, I woke up the next day, struggling to breathe, wrists strapped to the rails of a hospital bed, hearing the word "surgery." In the span of a couple of hours, I went from expecting a teeny balloon in my artery and a little puncture in my groin to having open heart surgery and an eight-inch scar bisecting my chest.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">Did I ever expect this? Not really. I'd read enough to know that heart disease is the <a href="http://www.womensheart.org/content/heartdisease/heart_disease_facts.asp" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; " class="">No. 1 killer of women</a>, that our heart attack symptoms often are radically different from men's (just ask Rosie O'Donnell, whose heart attack symptoms the same week as mine seemed more like the flu), and that a <a href="http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/125/1/188.full.pdf+html" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none; " class="">third of cardiovascular-disease deaths</a> happen to people younger than 65. I was lucky enough to arrange a flight home on a small plane -- larger planes have pressure issues, and the doctors wouldn't let us drive -- but 30 minutes into the flight, my left arm started hurting and I started sweating, not to mention crying at the thought of going through this all over again.</div><div style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: medium; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.375em; " class="">We made an emergency landing. Later, after five hours of tests and discussion, a doctor told me it was stress-induced angina: the symptoms of a heart attack without the life-threatening blockage. I've had to take everything -- shifting positions, showering, even breathing -- slowly. I'm more aware of my heartbeat, which can be a little freaky. Among them, that doctors now try to use a mammary artery, from the chest, for the bypass instead of grafting one from the leg because the mammary bypasses tend to last longer. And it's likely that a lot of my previous complaints over the past few years - extreme fatigue, lack of endurance, poor circulation, jaw pain (not T.M.J., after all), and so many other vague symptoms - were due to this growing accumulation of plaque in my artery, not perimenopause.
