The final episode of David Wolstencroft’s tense thriller The Escape Artist begins with another Tennant character about to find himself in similar straits as beleaguered defence lawyer Will Burton, his life already in shreds, finds himself let down by profession that he had hitherto ruled. </div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">The episode opened on an undoubted Hitchcockian motif: claustrophobic shots of caged birds in murder suspect Liam Foyle’s living room, reminding us, perhaps, to expect any twist and turn over the ensuing hour. Foyle (Toby Kebbell) is back in the dock, this time accused of the murder of Will’s wife Kate. But Will can only sit and watch with growing horror as his main court rival Maggie Gardner (Sophie Okonedo) makes this her moment to shine. He sees his own legal tricks and refutations played out before him and feels the same pain and dismay as the loved ones of victims whose killers his blind passion to win had turned loose in his past. It’s perhaps not that credible that a highly professional Oxford-educated individual might choose the solution that Will does, but in a very little time he has indulged in some dalliance with known criminals before retreating to the coast to drink, stab limpets with a penknife and to plot his own justice for Foyle.  </div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">For those expecting a frenzied last minute showdown between the killer and the wronged man, Foyle’s demise comes relatively early in proceedings. The outcome definitely requires some suspension of disbelief on the part of the viewer: not only for Foyle to have a convenient rare allergy, but also for the other elements required for Will’s plan to work to fall so neatly into place: the remote cottage, the shifty criminal contacts, the source of the allergen, the source of another epi-pen… However, two things redeem all of the unlikely circumstances. The first is the writing. Yes, the plot is arguably implausible and overblown in places, but no-one can deny that it is also clever and inventive. How many viewers saw those twists coming? Just as notable are the consistently high-class performances from the entire cast. Toby Kebbell is deliciously creepy as twice-freed murderer Foyle, Sophie Okonedo convinces as the wavering Maggie and Stephen Wight definitely deserves mention as the loyal Danny Monk. But David Tennant’s performance raises the series from what could easily be overblown melodrama to something quite sublime. From his boggling, breathless terror as he occupies a pub toilet mere feet from his quarry, to the raw emotion of his eulogy to his late wife, to his poker face as he listens to Maggie unravelling the means by which he dispatched Foyle, he doesn’t falter. Well, it’s probably not a good idea to get on the wrong side of David Tennant if you have a seafood allergy, for a start. But aside from that it’s the unsettling thought that what we believe to be justice is nothing of the sort if the act of winning is held more highly than the actual punishment of guilt. However, the alternative, demonstrated here, is more horrific. As we leave Will we do so with the echo of Foyle's words to him during their first meeting: “You know, it’s funny. It’s this frustration that leads him to play a dangerous game, with the assistance of Danny Monk (Stephen Wight) to bring Mayfield’s second, Trevor Harris (Tony Gardner) up to speed. </div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">Will has reason to fear the collapse of the case against Foyle. His main rival in chambers, Maggie Gardner (Sophie Okonedo), has been engaged to defend Foyle and she is hungry to prove herself as equal to, if not better than Will. Never mind that she knew the victim socially. She scans the murder scene images, shots that show Kate as a bloodied, staring corpse – in stark contrast to the happy, vibrant video clips that Will and Jamie watch curled on a bed together – and sees the case as just work, as something that will be good for her. He clearly has little respect for her either, from the way she walks him through their plea to the way she takes her tea. Foyle's presence dominates the episode. He hunts Will’s son Jamie on the journey home from school and manipulates the vulnerable and compliant Eileen Morris (Monica Dolan) who nervously concedes to his demands. He is even a significant presence in a key scene where he does not actually appear as he apparently stalks Maggie to her stylish, large-windowed ground floor flat. Even the very idea of the unseen Foyle having access to that private world leaves both Maggie and the audience feeling shaken and vulnerable in true chiller fashion. Foyle seems almost invulnerable, as he now understands that evidence and even actual guilt are far less important in this legal game than the ability of the legal team to find the tricks, loopholes and cheats necessary to secure the win.</div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="MsoNormal">For Will, circumstances are spiralling out of control. Jamie cannot recognise the killer. He even fails to spot him next to him on the bus. He won’t talk about events of that night. Will is the sole witness and Maggie is happy to exploit other circumstances that might make his testimony doubtful. It seems as if Foyle again will walk away from another killing, and with what consequences for the <st1:city w:st="on">Burtons</st1:city>? There are poignant and emotional scenes between Will and Jamie, with young actor Gus Barry giving a mature performance that avoids being cloying or precocious. He is perfectly believable as a youngster trying to make sense of the terrible things that happen to good people. However, David Tennant nails the performance again, sweeping between raw grief and emotion – the moment when he discovers that he was to have become a father again is heartbreaking - through fear and frustration to steely determination. He battles to make his colleagues see the legal profession in the same way that he now sees it. It’s hard for him to view his world from the other side and to realise that although he can see exactly what Maggie Gardner is doing he is powerless to do anything about it. During the eight day event films and TV shows from over 70 countries will be presented to American executives with a view to closing production and distribution deals.  The AFM 2013 takes place between November 6th - 13th Red Arrow International are presenting three titles from their TV catalogue: The Escape Artist, starring David Tennant, Esio Trot, featuring Dame Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman and Lilyhammer starring Steven van Zandt. The event increases the possibility that The Escape Artist will be picked up by an American network for screening in the US.  <div class="MsoNormal">Axel Böhm, the senior VP of global fiction acquisitions at Red Arrow, said, “Our TV-movie lineup is stronger than ever, and by cooperating with top-notch production companies like Endor, Fabrik, Larry Levinson and Chesler/Perlmutter, we have significantly increased our original English-language content.”</div> The Escape Artist stars David Tennant as talented junior barrister Will Burton. Will has never lost a case and believes his own maxim 'Everybody deserves a defence' - that is until he is called upon to fight the case of Liam Foyle (Toby Kebbell), a loner accused of a brutal murder. In spite of his doubts, Will wins the case, securing Foyle's freedom, but with consequences that he could never have imagined. The three part drama was created and written by David Wolstencroft, directed by Brian Welsh and also stars Sophie Okonedo and Ashley Jensen. García Acevedo</a> It was brilliant. I like the way it looks at justice -- the way the premise of it is 'everyone deserves a defence.' However, Will still thinks his client is guilty -- and he is -- but he's never cherry-picked and he's never given anything less than 100% to preparing his clients' defence. THAT is ethics. On another note, the last 10-15 minutes of it were not only thrilling and truly horrifying, but they leave you hooked because you wonder if what happened at the end will compromise and twist his morality in some way in the next episode. And we know David Tennant can pull those subtleties off like no one else.
