"There could be situations when the money is urgently needed and this could reduce inconveniences."<br /><br />The Asiana Boeing 777 landed short of the runway on July 6, killing three passengers and injuring dozens. There were 307 people on board, including 291 passengers.<br /><br />Lee said Asiana has already made payments to the families of three passengers who were killed. She did not know the amount.<br /><br />A mother of one passenger said an Asiana manager contacted the family in Seoul by telephone last week offering $10,000. The family declined because the offer wasn't made in writing, no explanation on conditions was given and they feared accepting the payment would bar lawsuits.<br /><br />"We said no on the phone. We felt offended and didn't want to accept," said Jeong Ouek-yoon, mother of passenger Kim Ye-rim. "We didn't know whether there were conditions to the payment."<br /><br />South Korean news agency Yonhap said multiple crash survivors and their families had been made the offer in writing. Scott Walker took office in 2010. That’s when people started to realize ALEC was more than just another non-profit, political group holding conferences around the country. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">It soon became clear that similar bills were being pitched and passed in Republican-controlled legislative houses across the country. ALEC, with its process for developing so-called model legislation, was the source. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">“My takeaway after spending two days at a conference is ALEC is a well-oiled machine," Taylor said Friday on her way back from the conference. "Putting the amount of money it has aside, the coordination and the infrastructure this group has in place is incredible. I was both fascinated and horrified by it.”</blockquote>ALEC claims that it "<a href="https://www.commondreams.org/headline/2013/05/07-1" rel="nofollow">really believes in transparency</a>." That wasn't Taylor's experience. ALEC conference organizers knew she was a Democrat who didn't embrace their agenda. As rain and fog moved into the Shenandoah Valley Sunday afternoon, driving conditions deteriorated for travelers along the rural, hilly Interstate 81 and eventually resulted in a devastating 41-vehicle pileup in Rockbridge County near Lexington that included six tractor-trailers and took hours to clean up.<br /><br />Most areas of I-81 are two lanes wide with passenger cars and 18-wheelers jockeying from lane to lane in a sometimes-white knuckle drive while trying to make it safely to destinations. Many who travel the route regularly have tales to tell about nightmarish wrecks, weather conditions, crazy drivers, tail-gating, and tractor-trailers. Jersey concrete barriers along construction zones add to the hazards, and may travelers have sat in stand-still traffic at one time or another. <br /><br />Sunday was one of the worst. Thankfully, no lives were lost although more than a dozen injuries were reported, and travelers sat parked on the interstate for seven hours while emergency personnel cleared debris.<br /><br />Reporter Zach Crizer with the <a href="http://www.roanoke.com/news/2144584-12/dangerous-conditions-spawned-41-vehicle-wreck-on-i-81-in.html"><i>Roanoke Times</i></a> wrote:<br /><blockquote>Sgt. J.F. Murphy, also of Virginia State Police, was  among the nine  troopers who dealt with the pileup Sunday night. He said  it's unlikely  investigators will ever determine exactly what or who  started the  crash, but he suggested the common practice of tailgating  may have been  a factor.<br /><br />He said brakes were applied at the front of a pack  of cars, setting  off a chain reaction that rippled a mile and a half  down the road.<br /><br />Murphy said speed was not a factor, as most of the  cars were  traveling at less than 50 mph because of the rainy conditions.  Still,  he said the tightly packed traffic on a wet road was a recipe  for  disaster.</blockquote>State Police Sgt. A.D. Nicely <a href="http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/2013/08/12/2629628/41-vehicle-pileup-in-virginia.html">said it could have been worse</a> but that some truck drivers made split-second decisions to steer their vehicles off the road:<br /><blockquote>The officer said some truck drivers veered off the road and overturned to avoid hitting other vehicles, likely saving lives.<br /><br />"I  believe that decision on their behalf saved us a lot more injuries or  fatalities," Nicely added. "You don't know what would have happened when  you start having 80,000-pound vehicles slamming into 2,000-pound  vehicles."</blockquote>Waynesboro reporter Chris Graham, owner of the <a href="http://augustafreepress.com/update-41-vehicles-in-i-81-crashes-in-rockbridge/?fb_source=pubv1"><i>Augusta Free Press</i></a>, began reporting on the accident Sunday afternoon as he posted on <a href="https://twitter.com/AFPChrisGraham">Twitter</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/AugustaFreePress">Facebook</a> and it was quickly picked up by Valley residents who passed the word along by social media.<br /><br />Quite frankly, as one who lives here and often drives I-81, I'm  surprised accidents don't happen more often although they  certainly happen enough. I am almost 8 weeks in on this weight loss journey with Belviq.  In the beginning you may remember me stating that I could barely get in 700 calories a day.  It is still the same struggle to get it all in with 3 meals a day.<div><br /></div><div>I start my morning off with 1 piece of whole wheat toast.  I normally do not put anything on it - no spreads at all.  However, my friend in California makes the most WONDERFUL jam.  I am ordering the sugar free one they just came out.  Stay tuned for a blog and details so you can enjoy!.  I also eat a great portion of fruit.  On the weekend, when I have a little more time in the morning, I try to get protein in by eating an egg.  I am not an oatmeal person and I do not like milk.  Getting my dairy and grains in are so difficult and I struggle with that.</div><div><br /></div><div>Mid morning I usually have a banana to help with my potassium.  That' about all I can tolerate because I am always full on just one piece of toast and fruit.</div><div><br /></div><div>When I am working, I usually just have a sandwich for lunch with a healthy side of veggies or fruit.  I don't put dressing on my sandwich.  I always have a fresh slice of tomato on it and that acts as my spread in terms of not having such a dry sandwich.  Again, whole wheat break, low fat cheese (one slice) and turkey or chicken breast.  I always toast my sandwich to get the cheese to melt and then after I put on the tomato.  SO good.</div><div><br /></div><div>By the time lunch is over, I can't even see or smell food because I am full.  When I get home, I cook a more substantial meal with usually chicken (hate fish), fresh vegetables or try to come up with something creative.  I try my hardest to get to at least 1000 calories this way, but it is still a struggle.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, that's the day in the life of food with Belviq!!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>

Counting calories is a useless and simple-minded way to decide what you eat. How come? Firstly, a calorie is a unit of heat. Heat does not directly guide metabolism. When caloric heat is released, nothing will put it back.<br />  <br />  Scientists have a very specific definition of a calorie. The simplest one is that a calorie is the amount of heat that is required to raise a cubic centimeter (milliliter) of water one degree Celsius, at room temperature and at sea level. Saying that you can consume calories is like saying that you can eat heat.<br />  <br />  Many experts who should know better wrongly equate food calories to metabolism. This overly simplified claim is the basis for saying that food provides metabolic energy in the form of heat. Wrong!<br />  <br />  Since you now know that calories are merely heat, you can understand why the only thing they do is effect temperature. The help with maintaining body temperature, not directly with metabolism.<br />  <br />  Do you realize how food calories are measured? We completely incinerate the food in a lab instrument called a bomb calorimeter. When a substance is completely burned up, until nothing except its charred remains are left, it has lost all the calories that it contained. Your metabolism, however, has nothing to do with what happens in a bomb calorimeter.<br />  <br />  For one thing, you could never harvest all the energy out of food. You might get 10 or 20 percent of it, certainly no more than 30 percent. Sometimes you won't get any calories at all. Using a calorie counter tells you absolutely nothing about what your metabolism will do with different foods.<br />  <br />  Consider this comparison: starch vs. cellulose. Cellulose is indigestible fiber, whereas starch is a source of food energy for humans. However, gram for gram, they both yield the same exact number of calories in a bomb calorimeter.<br />  <br />  Likewise, a calorimeter will derive the same number of calories from equivalent amounts of celery and potato, after correcting for water content. Obviously, your body could not possibly do that.<br />  <br />  Comparing the metabolism of food to how a calorimeter (furnace) works is not nearly as meaningful as understanding the fate of different foods when they are digested. It is especially meaningful to understand how different cells and tissues, such as fat vs. muscle, are impacted by different foods.<br />  <br />  It may surprise you, for example, to compare two well-known and nearly identical sugars, fructose and glucose. Their caloric yield is exactly the same in a bomb calorimeter. However, glucose goes through the liver into many different tissues, most notably brain and muscle, and fructose never escapes intact from the liver. Counting calories tells you nothing about these two different metabolic fates.<br />  <br />  The consequences of the different metabolic fates of glucose vs. fructose are tremendous. Glucose serves your entire body, whereas fructose has to be converted to something else before it can move through your liver. That something else is largely fat. A simple way to look at it is that fructose will make you fat much faster than glucose will. The caloric potential of these two sugars is irrelevant.<br />  <br />  By the way, you will be clearer about the uselessness of calorie counts for losing weight once you grasp the difference between calories and metabolism. Chew on that notion for a while (pardon the pun).
