One of the scribes asked Gingrich about the GOP's branding when it came to social issues; Gingrich, as is his wont, flipped the question back on the questioner.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">"There's a question of which side gets to define 'extremism,'" said Gingrich. "I mean, the Planned Parenthood witness in Florida recently who said, gee, if the baby actually survives the abortion, the baby has no standards. Very few Americans believe in taxpayer providing for abortionists killing babies in the ninth month [of a pregnancy], under any circumstances."</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Gingrich was referring to a viral-ish video from a Florida legislature hearing on proposed new abortion laws. RNC Chairman Reince Priebus had also attempted to <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2013/04/03/reince_priebus_wants_the_media_to_rebrand_planned_parenthood_please.html" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;">goad the media into covering that</a>; the starting point for an abortion discussion should be the horrors of the process, not the potential limitations on that process.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">I bring this up because a week later—yesterday—Kirsten Powers wrote a column shaming the media for not <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2013/04/10/philadelphia-abortion-clinic-horror-column/2072577/" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">covering the trial of Kermit Gosnell</a>, a Philadelphia abortionist who is accused of commiting hundreds of gruesome late-term murders.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><blockquote style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.6em; margin: 1em auto; padding: 0px 40px; quotes: none; vertical-align: baseline;">When Rush Limbaugh attacked Sandra Fluke, there was non-stop media hysteria. The venerable <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">NBC Nightly News'</em> Brian Williams <a href="http://newsbusters.org/blogs/brent-baker/2012/03/01/nbc-firestorm-outrage-women-after-crude-tirade-rush-limbaugh" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">intoned,</a> "A firestorm of outrage from women after a crude tirade from Rush Limbaugh," as he teased a segment on the brouhaha. Yet, accusations of babies having their heads severed — a major human rights story if there ever was one — doesn't make the cut.</blockquote></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Republicans weren't talking about it either; they were talking about that Planned Parenthood video, because taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood is an active political issue. But Powers' column kicked off a Twitter-driven campaign to shame journalists into covering the Gosnell trial. Mollie Hemingway, a <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Christianity Today</em> columnist, burned up the Twittersphere asking journalists like the <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Washington Post</em>'s Sarah Kliff and <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">The Atlantic</em>'s Garance Franke-Ruta why they hadn't covered Gosnell. Franke-Ruta actually <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">had</em>, but Hemingway argued that her one item wasn't nearly enough. She got more results; before midnight, BuzzFeed <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/four-documents-to-understand-the-kermit-gosnell-trial" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">published a quick list</a> of "four documents to understand the Kermit Gosnell trial." (<strong style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">UPDATE:</strong> This wasn't Buzzfeed's <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/jtes/house-of-horrors-trial" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">first item about the case</a>. It ran a recap of the "House of Horrors" trial earlier.)</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Let's just state the obvious: National political reporters are, by and large, socially liberal. We are more likely to know a gay couple than to know someone who owns an "assault weapon." We are, generally, pro-choice. Twice, in D.C., I've caused a friend to literally leave a conversation and freeze me out for a day or so because I suggested that the Stupak Amendment and the Hyde Amendment made sense. There <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">is</em> a bubble. Horror stories of abortionists are less likely to permeate that bubble than, say, a story about a right-wing pundit attacking an abortionist who then claims to have gotten death threats.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Slate</em> is an exception to this rule. Two years and two months ago, <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/the_back_alley/2011/02/what_happened_to_the_women.html" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;">my colleagues Will Saletan</a> and <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2011/01/19/crappy_abortion_providers_thrive_in_politically_fraught_environments.html" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;">Amanda Marcotte</a>—who've covered abortion issues for years, and in Will's case earned real ire from some liberal readers—wrote about <a href="http://www.phila.gov/districtattorney/pdfs/grandjurywomensmedical.pdf" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">the grand jury report</a> that detailed Gosnell's possible crimes. I read Will's piece at the time but didn't see a political story to chase. Only when Hemingway started on that tear of tweets did I read the report, and I'm glad she forced the issue, because the report is a catalogue of unspeakable horrors. This is just from the introduction.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><blockquote style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.6em; margin: 1em auto; padding: 0px 40px; quotes: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Furniture and blankets were stained with blood. Instruments were not properly sterilized. Disposable medical supplies were not disposed of; they were reused, over and over again. Medical equipment – such as the defibrillator, the EKG, the pulse oximeter, the blood pressure cuff – was generally broken; even when it worked, it wasn’t used. The emergency exit was padlocked shut. And scattered throughout, in cabinets, in the basement, in a freezer, in jars and bags and plastic jugs, were fetal remains. It was a baby charnel house.</blockquote></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">That's the G-rated version. One woman, according to investigators, was "left lying in place for hours after Gosnell tore her cervix and colon while trying, unsuccessfully, to extract the fetus." Another woman was sent home when she "still had fetal parts inside her." Another woman died after untrained and unlicenced aides gave her "unmonitored, unrecorded intravenous injections of Demerol." Gosnell trained those aides to commit fraud, distorting ultrasounds to make the late-term pregnancies look less far advanced. Viable babies—hundreds of them, allegedly—were decapitated with scissors.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">So the question, raised by pro-lifers, is this: <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Explain to us why Gosnell isn't a national story</em>. Somebody else can try. I can't explain it. It's never made sense to me, how a local crime story becomes a national story. Two words: "Poop cruise." CNN ran hours of coverage and grainy video of a stranded Carnival cruise ship, a situation that inconvenienced many and killed none. How does a missing college student or an angry man in a TSA line become part of Our National Conversation? I don't know. I do know that a reporter in the bubble is less likely to be compelled by the news of an arrested abortionist.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">But which reporters need to cover the Gosnell story? Last night, keying off Hemingway,<em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">National Review</em>'s Jim Geraghty <a href="https://twitter.com/jimgeraghty" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">tweeted</a> a series of national scandals that started as local news. "Jeffrey Dahmer? Local crime story," he said. "Trayvon Martin? Local crime story."</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">I flew down to Florida last year to <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2012/04/george_zimmerman_killing_trayvon_martin_has_sanford_s_black_community_angry_.html" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(255, 255, 153); color: #006699; text-decoration: none;">cover</a> the Trayvon Martin story; I don't think the comparison is apt. Martin was shot on February 26, 2012. George Zimmerman was questioned by police, but not charged. <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">That</em> was what pulled in the national media, what spurred the resignation of the local police chief, and what turned the story into a discussion of "stand your ground" laws. Once Zimmerman was charged, the press largely looked elsewhere for stories.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Gosnell <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">was</em> charged, and magazines like <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Slate</em> wrote about the charges at the time. He's accused of performing illegal abortions. In Pennsylvania, an abortion after the 24th week of pregnancy is only legal if a physician proves it was necessary to "preserve life of mother or prevent serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of bodily function." Gosnell didn't do that.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">But there is a political scandal here. Grand jury investigators were baffled: How did Gosnell's clinic, an infamous place in the tri-state area, go un-inspected for so long? Basically, the regulators blew it. "Even though the first DOH Certificate of Approval for Gosnell’s clinic expired on December 20, 1980," write the investigators, "the next documented site review was not conducted until August 1989." After a 1992 visit, regulators reported that the clinic was wheelchair-accessible, even though it's "multi-leveled and has no elevator." After 1993, the state didn't follow up complaints about the clinic.</div></div><div class="text parbase section" style="border: 0px; font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font: inherit; line-height: 18px; margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><div style="border: 0px; font: inherit; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1.25em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">If you're pro-choice, say, and you worry that the Gosnell story is being promoted only to weaken your cause, you really should read that grand jury report. "DOH could and should have closed down Gosnell’s clinic years before," write the investigators. Why wasn't it? Were state regulators nervous about igniting a political fight about abortion? Is the regulatory system incompetent or under-funded? And are there other states where the same could be said? Social conservatives are largely right about the <em style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Gosnell</em> story. Maybe it's not a raw political story. It's just the story of a potential mass murderer who operated for decades as government regulators did nothing.</div></div></div>

So unless you're heartless, being purposely obtuse or just way too cool for a movie version of <a href="http://www.jackierobinson.com/" style="color: #a1abb2; text-decoration: none;">Jackie Robinson</a>, "42" is going to leave you feeling good about baseball, cheering Robinson and booing racism. In about the most paint-by-numbers way possible. That's not bad, it's just Hollywood.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.450000762939453px; margin-top: 11px; padding: 0px;">And Hollywood comes with its limitations. It boils down a complex story of race, history and baseball into two hours worth of important moments. It scratches the surface on how Robinson (played by Chadwick Boseman) deals with venomous attacks, how he bonds with his teammates and what Dodgers general manager <a href="http://baseballhall.org/hof/rickey-branch" style="color: #a1abb2; text-decoration: none;">Branch Rickey</a> (Harrison Ford) is hoping to accomplish by making Robinson baseball's first black player. "42" doesn't do much to develop the rest of the Brooklyn Dodgers, save for a <a href="http://www.peeweereese.com/" style="color: #a1abb2; text-decoration: none;">Pee Wee Reese</a> (Lucas Black) scene here and an anti-Jackie petition there. But if you wanted depth, you'd read a book, right? Let's skip all the historical significance for a moment and just be happy that there's a baseball movie in theaters. It's not the '90s anymore, so we're not being treated to the golden era of baseball flicks. The last major motion picture worth mentioning? "Moneyball," which came out in 2011. Maybe 2012's "Trouble With the Curve" counts. Maybe not. But "42," is tried-and-true baseball, 100 percent. The baseball scenes are exciting and well portrayed. He's a legit cinema hero. Now he's playing the hero role here, as Dodgers GM Branch Rickey, who viewers see as a one-man, cigar-toting crusader for Jackie Robinson. Heck, you've probably read a book about him or watched a documentary. But let's consider, for a second, the people who aren't really baseball fans. The moviegoer, for example. There's a good chance this will be a popular movie, one that extends beyond baseball fans. So let's be real: Baseball could use all the new fans it can pick up. She killed herself eight days later.</div><div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Will the teens also be charged for sending photos of the alleged assault? Oblivion

Tonight we went to see the new Tom Cruise movie "Oblivion". I enjoyed it! It's your typical big budget sci fi movie - you can't go wrong with it. <br /><br />Afterwards we had sliders in Eddie Rockets. A very enjoyable movie was topped off by 20 mins in the hot tub when we got home. Today's archidose #666

Just so happens that #666 (aka <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_the_Beast">Number of the Beast</a>) of the "today's archidose" series features the soon-to-razed American Folk Art Museum, coming two days after <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/11/arts/design/moma-to-raze-ex-american-folk-art-museum-building.html?pagewanted=all">MoMA announced</a> they are going to replace the 12-year-old museum designed by <a href="http://www.twbta.com/">Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects</a> with an expansion that melds with their building. It's doubtful that the MoMA expansion will have as much exterior character or interior richness as its predecessor. Book Review: All the Buildings in New York

Australian illustrator James Gulliver Hancock manages to meld at least these four subjects in the first published collection of the sketches he's been amassing and sharing <a href="http://allthebuildingsinnewyork.com/">on his blog</a>. The book documents many of the city's famous architectural icons, making it an architectural guide of sorts, but it also includes many fairly anonymous buildings, which goes along with his unrealistic yet endearing goal to draw all of the buildings in New York. His style also bridges art and a children's picture book; his skewed perspectives, exaggerated details and playful compositions lean to the latter, but his abilities as an artist are clear. Some of the best depictions meld architectural perspectives with two-dimensional paintings, such as the <a href="http://allthebuildingsinnewyork.com/new/manhattan/the-guggenheim-museum">patterned abstraction</a> he uses for the addition to the Guggenheim.<br /><br />At only 64 pages the book just scratches the surface of the reportedly 900,000 buildings in New York City; one estimate is 500 buildings in the book (some sketches group multiple buildings), making it about one half of one percent of the total. It's an interesting mix of iconic buildings and what many people call background buildings, the ones that even tourists hardly recognize when walking around the city. It's clear that Hancock does not play favorites. A group of three buildings in the Lower East Side is drawn with as much attention to detail and color as the nearby New Museum; if anything the former actually gives a stronger sense of place than the latter, since the New Museum is missing its neighbors. Ultimately the book is a peek into Hancock's mind more than it is an architecture book or a guidebook. The play co-starred Charles Bickford and opened at the Greenwich Village Theatre. Receiving good reviews, the show moved uptown where it ran for four months. Of Cagney's first performance on the legitimate stage, critic Robert Benchley cited his 10-minutes of silence during a kangaroo-court scene as "something that many a more established actor might watch with profit." When <i>Outside Looking In</i> closed, it was back to vaudeville for Cagney, but from 1928 - 1929 he worked steadily on Broadway. Then, in early 1930 he was cast, with Joan Blondell, in a new show, <i>Penny Arcade</i>. Though its Broadway run ended in just three weeks, Al Jolson happened to catch it and bought the movie rights. The Dies Committee (1938 - 1944) was the first incarnation of HUAC and in 1940 when the LA County District Attorney named Cagney as a person with an interest in the Communist Party</span>, the actor met the accusation head-on. First he called a press conference and passionately denied the charge. Next he met with Rep. Martin Dies, head of the Congressional committee, and stated his case in person. Dies effectively put the matter to rest. <i><a href="http://www.classicfilmboy.com/2013/04/james-cagney-blogathon-yankee-doodle.html"><span style="color: red;"><b>Yankee Doodle Dandy</b></span></a> </i>(1942) began making its way toward production soon afterward. The role of Broadway's legendary and multifaceted George M. Cohan was a perfect fit for Cagney, who said of himself, "once a song-and -dance man, always a song-and-dance man" and neatly described his own style as "flash, with always a dash of the eccentric and a bit of humor." Young Jim sits in the kitchen closely watching his father across the dining table. The elder Cagney starts rocking from side to side and then begins a "low keening" that will build to a wail. These episodes were called "Dad's fits" and would portend Cagney's Cody Jarrett in <i><a href="http://themovieprojector.blogspot.com/2013/04/white-heat-1949.html"><b><span style="color: red;">White Heat</span></b></a> </i>(1949). The actor considered it "a good picture in a number of ways." The original script had been typical formula, what he called "the old knock-down-drag-'em-out," so, as he he often did, he set about making improvements. He suggested to the writers that the story be modeled on Ma Barker and her boys and that Jarrett be psychotic. This, Cagney reasoned, would be a natural set-up to his character's climactic demise. It was also his notion that Jarrett be a mama's boy and proposed a scene with Cody sitting on his mother's lap. "Let's see if we can get away with this," he said to director Raoul Walsh. They did. For the next 20 years he would spend most of his time on his working farm in New York and on Martha's Vineyard. In 1984 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. </span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Of Cagney, Orson Welles said, "He always played right at the top of his bent, but he was always <i>true</i>. Sure, acting <i>can</i> be too <i>broad</i>. Broad is wide - spread out. Cagney was <i>focused</i>. Christ, like a laser beam! Cagney was one of the biggest actors in the whole history of the screen. Force, style, truth, and control - he had everything. He pulled no punches. God, how he projected! And yet nobody could call Cagney a ham. He didn't bother about reducing himself to fit the scale of the camera; he was much too busy doing his job."</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Elia Kazan, who'd had a small role in <i><a href="http://thegirlwiththewhiteparasol.blogspot.com/2013/04/movie-review-city-for-conquest.html"><span style="color: red;"><b>City for Conquest</b></span></a> </i>(1940), recalled Cagney as "a completely honest actor." Kazan erroneously assumed that Cagney had fully worked out his performance in advance, at home, and marveled that "what he did always seemed spontaneous."</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Late in life Cagney looked back on working with a young actor who went through intense preparation before every scene. When a scene had to be re-shot, Cagney viewed the second take. "There I realized what the difficulty was...he was doing it for <i>himself</i>, not the audience. He was psyching himself up to <i>be</i> the character, instead of just understanding the character and playing it for the audience." Cagney's philosophy on acting was simply stated and often quoted, "You walk in, plant yourself squarely on both feet, look the other fella in the eye and tell the truth." Those who worked with him would doubtless agree that is exactly what he did.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">James Cagney died at Verney Farm in 1986 at age 86. His pallbearers included a former heavyweight champion (Floyd Patterson), a ballet legend (Mikhail Baryshnikov), an Academy Award winning film director (Milos Forman), movie producer A.C. Lyles, and one of his closest long-time friends, actor Ralph Bellamy.
