And he’s perfectly willing to reduce his opponent to emotional rubble.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>The Way, Way Back</i> is one of the best coming-of-age tales ever caught on film: a captivating blend of snarky comedy and heartbreaking pathos that evokes pleasant memories of <i>Summer of ’42</i>, <i>Stand by Me</i> and other classics of the genre. This project is cast to perfection, with every actor — in parts large or small — making the most of the sharp script from writer/directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Very few films leave us wanting more, as the screen darkens, the lights come up, and we regretfully abandon our seats. I didn’t want this one to end. Indeed, I wanted to watch it again, if only to catch some of the dialogue that was buried beneath the laughter coming from last week’s delighted preview audience.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The action takes place in the summer beach community of Marshfield, Mass., and the surrounding area on Boston’s South Shore. Although the setting is contemporary — only because we spot smart phones and ear buds — the locale feels oddly timeless, as is appropriate for the narrative. Youthful angst knows no specific era; the desperation of adolescents struggling for maturity has been relevant ever since Shakespeare’s <i>Romeo and Juliet</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This anywhen atmosphere is further amplified by Water Wizz, the somewhat dilapidated water park that plays such an important role in these events. (It’s no set; <a href="http://www.waterwizz.com/">Water Wizz</a> is a fully operational, mom-and-pop operation in East Wareham, Mass.) Back in the day, Hollywood sometimes used traveling carnivals and circuses as settings for coming-of-age sagas; fading theme parks seem to have become the modern equivalent. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I’d love to see this new film on a double bill with 2009’s under-rated <i><a href="http://derrickbang.blogspot.com/2009/04/adventureland-enjoyable-ride.html">Adventureland</a></i>, which has a similarly nostalgic vibe, although its protagonist is a bit older. Now, <i>that</i> would be a grand night at the movies.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Anyway...<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Fourteen-year-old Duncan (Liam James) has been dragged along for a summer “vacation” at the beach house owned by his divorced mother Pam’s (Toni Collette) overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell). To say that Trent is a calculating bully would be understatement; he views Duncan as a potential impediment toward his pursuit of Pam — an absolutely accurate appraisal — and snatches every opportunity to crush the boy’s already fragile spirit.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><a name='more'></a><br />  <div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Carell should play bad guys more often; he’s <i>really</i> good at it. We want to smack the condescending smirk off Trent’s face the moment we meet him, and it just gets worse. Carell modulates his line deliveries so that only Duncan detects the underlying disdain; everybody else in the room believes that Trent is trying his best to “get along” with the “obstinate” boy.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The dialogue is note-perfect; Faxon and Rash have an almost scary talent for capturing the way cheerfully ruthless adults can wreak havoc with an adolescent’s disorienting emotions. The verisimilitude likely results from an author’s core mantra, to “write what you know.” Rash claims, in the press notes, that he actually endured what became this movie’s opening scene, when his mother’s second husband played a similar head-game with him.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">No wonder so much of this film’s anguish feels genuine.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But that’s not to say that Faxon and Rash have delivered a downer: far from it. True, Duncan’s plight initially gets worse, as he’s surrounded by the neighbors in this beach resort — well known to Trent — who take this setting as an excuse for spring-break-ish hedonism. But the filmmakers ensure that we share Duncan’s view that these adults are behaving very, very badly ... and that Pam, in her own way desperate enough to go along, is making a massive mistake.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But Duncan can’t articulate his own feelings, let alone find a way to offer relationship advice to his mother.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Just about the point we’re ready to die from the agony of sharing this poor kid’s worst nightmare — each of Trent’s orchestrated humiliations a bit worse than the previous one — things improve. A bit. Maybe. Probably.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Summertime next-door neighbor Betty (Allison Janney), an often inebriated free spirit with absolutely no filter, is a hot mess whose husband deserted her and their three kids. One of the latter, Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb), is a mite older than Duncan, but not so much that she’s unattainable. She also obviously understands the heartbreak of divided parents; like Pam, Susanna compensates unwisely, in this case by hitching her fragile psyche to the local “mean girls” led by Trent’s bitchy daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The immediate circle of adults is completed by Trent’s longtime friends, Kip and Joan (Rob Corddry and Amanda Peet), a wealthy couple whose sybaritic tendencies clearly poison the group dynamic. Joan is just as condescendingly unpleasant toward Pam, if a bit more artfully, as Trent is to Duncan. Peet is marvelously waspish, with Joan easily reducing Pam to deer-in-the-headlights uncertainty. We can’t help but shiver.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Duncan finally — mercifully! — finds respite at Water Whiz, where he comes under the perceptive eye of the park’s gregarious manager, Owen (Sam Rockwell). Although manifesting the persona of a goofball motormouth, Owen recognizes a desperate misfit going under for the third time. A bond is struck: initially fragile, built on Duncan’s failure to recognize when Owen is joshing him, but soon much, much stronger.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Owen’s carefree manner notwithstanding, he’s smart enough to understand the need to proceed very cautiously with his new young friend.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sadly, though, Owen doesn’t take similar care when dealing with Caitlin (the always effervescent Maya Rudolph), an employee who obviously likes him, but wishes that he’d fer-gawd’s-sake grow <i>up</i>, already.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Few young actors could survive being surrounded by such an ensemble cast of scene-stealers, but James rises to the occasion. That’s not merely impressive; it’s essential. This is Duncan’s story, and James is in virtually every scene. He perfectly captures Duncan’s awkward helplessness: the boy’s inability to fence with a cruel authority figure — Trent — who outmatches him in every respect.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">James even delivers silence unerringly, his expressive face an often tortured tapestry of misery, his words and emotions so bottled up that he can’t get <i>anything</i> out. It’s a genuinely sublime performance ... and <i>oh</i>, how we feel this boy’s pain.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Rockwell is a similar revelation. Although often typecast as a loutish jerk, thanks to varied efforts such as <i>Choke</i> and <i><a href="http://derrickbang.blogspot.com/2012/10/seven-psychopaths-deranged-in-all-wrong.html">Seven Psychopaths</a></i>, those of us who admired his one-man tour-de-force in 2009’s <i><a href="http://derrickbang.blogspot.com/2009/07/moon-thoughtful-sci-fi.html">Moon</a></i> know that he’s capable of much, much better. Friends and supporters of Governor Bob McDonnell have set up a legal defense fund to help with legal expenses and defend his record in office against attack.<br /><br />The nonprofit 527(e)(1) Restoration Fund's board consists of Virginia Beach attorney Stanley Baldwin, Hampton roads businessman and entrepreneur Tom Knox, and Virginia beach attorney Jason Miyares.<br /><br />Board chairman Baldwin commented:<br /><blockquote>"We believe that Bob McDonnell has complied with the laws of Virginia as they relate to financial disclosures.  For a decades-long public servant like Governor McDonnell, the legal fees being incurred by the investigations  spurred by the case against the former mansion chef could be ruinous. Though the <strike><a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2011/10/bombshell-kochs-sold-oil-equipment-to.html">Benedict Arnold</a></strike> Koch brothers have millions to spend on their anti-worker agenda, it seems they still can't be bothered to follow the rules.<br /><br />A California grand jury is currently investigating whether<a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/07/17/exclusive-california-grand-jury-probing-shadowy-money-groups.html" rel="nofollow"> corporate America's favorite billionaires</a> illegally funneled $11 million in an unsuccessful attempt to influence two state ballot initiatives last year. The probe is looking at whether David and Charles Koch used a "dark money" group to launder the funds, which is the largest contribution ever disclosed as campaign money laundering in California history.<br /><br />The Koch-linked group Protect Patient Rights is being looked at as one of the donors that gave  money in an unsuccessful effort to defeat Proposition 30, a measure to raise income taxes to pay for education. They may have also given money to pass Proposition 32, which would have<a href="http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2012/10/calif-teamsters-out-in-force-against.html" rel="nofollow"> taken away workers' rights to political speech</a>. California Teamsters fought hard against Prop 32 and pulled off a stunning victory.<br /><br />Why all the <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/sacramento/news/2013/07/18/grand-jury-investigates-campaign-violati.html?s=print" rel="nofollow">trouble for the Kochs</a>? The Sacramento Business Journal explains:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Social welfare groups are nonprofit organizations that don’t have to pay taxes or reveal their donors as long as their primary purpose isn’t political campaigning. However, California law does require groups contributing to ballot campaigns to reveal their donors.</blockquote>That didn't happen here. And while a Koch Industries spokesman said the dynamic duo had nothing to do with either ballot initiative, he made clear he was not speaking on behalf of independent entities the brothers have a hand in financially.<br /><br />The Koch brothers are well known for their political spending. Protect Patient Rights doled out $55 million to political groups to back the corporate class during the 2010 elections. And they'll be members of a strong Teamster medical plan.<br /><br />Here's another benefit of the contract: a solid grievance procedure that will protect workers from unfair disciplinary action. And still another: They'll work five days a week. The premise may have started with Peter M. Lenkov’s cheeky Dark Horse comic book series, which ran for four issues back in 1999, but it turned into something of a derivative mess en route to the big screen.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And while <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">R.I.P.D.</i> would be an unsatisfying film under any circumstances, it’s particularly tiresome during a summer laden with similarly overblown, city-leveling action fantasies. Between this and 2011’s <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Green Lantern</i>, he’ll get a reputation for destroying mid-range comic book franchises.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At a scant 96 minutes, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">R.I.P.D.</i> certainly doesn’t linger, but director Robert Schwentke’s feverish pace borders on the ridiculous. He and editor Mark Helfrich have orchestrated a film that feels as if it’s on Benzedrine; everything comes fast and furious, the rat-a-tat cutting as breathless and frantic as <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Crank</i> or <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Run Lola Run</i>. But while atmospheric frenzy may have been a solid stylistic choice with those two flicks, here it’s just another annoying affectation ... and something else cribbed along the way.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Actually, Schwentke misses no opportunity to be irritating. He even opens his film with a fleeting, action-laced flash-forward, and then employs a brief voice-over to wind the clock back a few days, to the story’s somewhat quieter origins. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That move is the first refuge of a nervous director who worries that he can’t hold an audience without employing tactics, and it smells of panicked, eleventh-hour tinkering. Voice-over isn’t used again — a telling sign — and we also wind up watching that opening sequence again, when the narrative catches up to it. Déjà vu, anyone?<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I’d be inclined to write this flick off as a total loss, but Jeff Bridges is too entertaining to dismiss; he makes the viewing experience genuinely worthwhile. Which — as is the case with <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">RED 2</i>, also opening today — explains why stars deserve their salaries.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Boston cop Nick Walker (Reynolds) begins the last day of his life by cuddling Julia (Stephanie Szostak), the wife he adores, and who adores him in return. She thanks him for the new little fruit tree in their back yard, unaware that Nick concealed some contraband beneath the root ball, when he planted the tree late the previous evening, in order to surprise her.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><a name='more'></a><br />  <div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But Nick has second thoughts about the assorted chunks of gold that he and partner Bobby Hayes (Kevin Bacon), ah, “liberated” from a scummy drug lord the previous day. Nick tells Bobby that he intends to file the gold as evidence, as he should have done in the first place. Despite Nick’s assurances to the contrary, Bobby can’t take the chance that Nick will implicate him, as well; during a weapons-blazing skirmish a few hours later, Bobby waits for the right moment to blast his partner to Kingdom Come.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Except, in Nick’s case, his ascent toward heaven in a funnel of light (hello, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">This Is the End</i>) is interrupted when he winds up in a sterile examination room (<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Men in Black</i>), with a crisply dressed Proctor (Mary-Louise Parker) regarding him expectantly. This, then, is Nick’s introduction to the celestial Rest In Peace Department, tasked with identifying, locating and incarcerating — or terminating — the departed nasty souls (“Dead-O’s”) who should have gone straight to Hell, but somehow managed to extend their stay on Earth’s mortal plain.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At least, I <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">think</i> that’s why the Dead-O’s hang around. This film’s clumsy script never bothers to discuss that detail, just as it never explains why Nick has been tagged for R.I.P.D. duty. Initially, it seems as if he’s being “punished” with this 100-year assignment in a sort of constabulary Purgatory ... but why, in that case (as Proctor explains), would his new colleagues be “history’s greatest police officers”? Surely such dedicated cops wouldn’t <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">all</i> be stuck in Purgatory. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">More to the point, if Proctor and her unseen bosses upstairs in Eternal Affairs know absolutely everything about Nick, as is made clear, wouldn’t they also know about his change of heart regarding the gold stash — apparently the one “bad” move in an otherwise exemplary career — and recognize that he is, in fact, on the side of the angels? So he should have been granted access to Heaven in the first place?<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This film is littered with similar narrative inconsistencies, and they’re all annoying. Oh, and here’s a big one: Based on what we learn later, why would Bobby have left <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">any</i> of that gold in Nick’s possession?<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As the newbie, Nick is assigned to partner veteran lawman Roy Pulsifer (Bridges), a 19th century sheriff in the Wyatt Earp mold, who shoots first and asks questions later. Access to our workaday realm, at least for the Boston branch of the R.I.P.D., is granted via the back room of a somnambulant VCR repair shop: a direct lift from Del Floria’s tailor shop, in television’s <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Man from</i> <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">UNCLE</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Rounding up Dead-O’s generally is a standard procedure that first involves penetrating their human disguises (<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Men in Black</i> again), made easy with the application of the tandoori spices prevalent in Indian cuisine. That sight gag is a minor giggle, since it reveals the undead spirit in all its putrescent, body-mangled glory.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then, if the Dead-O is unwilling to come along peacefully, it can be snuffed into vapor via the special bullets in R.I.P.D. weapons, which emit a burst that strongly resembles the meson particle ray from a <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Ghostbusters</i>proton gun.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Oh, and in order to do their work without being detected by rank-and-file Earth civilians, R.I.P.D. officers are granted “identities” that make them look like somebody else (a note from <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Heaven Can Wait</i>). Roy’s avatar is a hot supermodel babe (Marisa Miller), while Nick is stuck looking like an elderly Chinese gentleman (the always delightful James Hong). <o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Their weapons, in turn, appear (respectively) as harmless hair dryers and bananas ... although Schwentke cuts those sight gags so abruptly, that we scarcely have time to notice.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So yes, some of this film’s running bits are reasonably amusing, as is the banter between the frustrated Nick and the gruffly condescending Roy. Indeed, Bridges plays this cowpoke-out-of-time to the hilt, his twinkling eyes and often bemused expression put to excellent use as the cranky Roy complains about losing his favorite hat, or laments the rather ghastly way in which his human life came to and end, back in the day.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This might have been a better film, had we been able to spend more time with routine Dead-O trackdowns, and the developing bond between Nick and Roy. But Schwentke and his inept scripters can’t wait to rush into their story’s central Big, Bad Catastrophe, which (naturally) involves leveling great chunks of the surrounding metropolis, much as we’ve recently seen in <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Iron Man 3</i>, and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Star Trek Into Darkness</i>, and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Fast & Furious 6</i>, and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Man of Steel</i>, and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">White House Down</i>, and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Pacific Rim</i>, and ... you get the idea.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I’m simply exhausted. <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Enough</i>, already.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Bridges’ charm and Parker’s snarky sass aren’t enough to keep this leaky ship afloat, and Reynolds brings very little to the party. Bacon makes a great villain, chewing up the scenery with a panache that this film could use more of, while Szostak makes good eye-candy as the Sexiest Wife Of All Time.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sure, visual effects supervisor Mark Hawker’s work is polished and convincing, as are Thomas Nellen’s various Dead-O makeup effects. No doubt about it: Plenty of money was thrown onto the screen. But that’s the point; it was hurled like spaghetti onto a wall, rather than applied artfully or logically.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We cannot get emotionally involved without a rational (and consistent!) script, or characters we actually care about, and this film offers neither. I don't generally like labels.  I'm stuck with some, more than I wish I've earned.  Thanks to <a href="http://thesubmissivewife.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Kitty</a> for enlightening me, I have a new one that I kind like in a funny way.  Shelby Cross' post <a href="http://shelbycrosswriter.blogspot.com/2013/07/why-i-need-discipline-because-no-one.html" target="_blank">I'm a dog that shits the bed</a> tells the story.  And this is in the funniest possible way so don't get all fussy about the analogy.  It's completely true.  <br /><br />Only I've crossed the line and there's poo in the bed more often than not.  And while one would want to keep the awesome dog that occasionally poo's the house, nobody wants the dog that's constantly stinking up the place with her shit.<br /><br />So I've got the pesky little ADD thing that's been slowly taking over my entire existence.  Then there's this little OCD thing that hasn't been a real issue in probably 20 years.  Both are waging battle in my head - <span style="color: blue;">Ooooh what's that? Did you hear about...? Wonder what she's doing.  Let's get lunch..</span>.  <span style="color: purple;">You're very capable and can do this perfect.  Just get organized.  Let's sort it out and make a list!  No, lets make many lists and it will all be perfect!  Clean the counter first so the lists are tidy.  Color code the lists!  It'll be so much more organized and easier that way! </span><span style="color: blue;">Did you hear that siren? I'm hungry! I'm bored and I hate being a grown up! What's for dinner? Check your email!!!!  There's too many things to do!  Lets do everything at once! I see a squirrel!</span> <span style="color: purple;">You're right.  You know you won't finish the lists anyway.  And what you get done is either wrong or will be undone as soon as you do it.  There's no point.  I quit</span>.  <span style="color: blue;">Nanna nanna boo boo, I'm the winner...  Let's go yell at somebody for something stupid!  Wooohooo lets go</span>!<br /><br />It doesn't help that hubby and I own our jobs.  Or that I'm responsible for his ability to work effectively.  Or that I have to answer to him throughout the day about what I screwed up this time.<br /><br />We're not doing the whole thing DD thing like most.  It's dawned on me  that we kind of are in our own unofficial way.  We've got very clear roles and  expectations.  No consequences though.  Well there are, I get the look  of death so often I'm starting to think that's what his face really  looks like.  Then there's some immature/sarcastic things he'll sometimes do  because they're effective (as he puts it) but it takes me days of anger  and hurt feelings before I understand what he's trying to tell me.  Communication isn't there yet.  But, he's working from the crack of cock-a-doodle-doo until well past bedtime.  Hoping when this project is done in September, we can go back to our old 50-hour work weeks and function like humans again.  So there's literally been no energy or time to invest in us as a couple.   I have high hopes it'll get better.  But anyway...<br /><br />I had my ADD & daily anxiety medications taken away a few months ago because of dangerous blood pressure.  It's normal now, meaning that one of my cocktail was causing it.  Over these last few months, I've not only become horrible at my job, I've become a terrible mother and just a person you don't want to live with.  I've been flustered and angry.  I never thought of myself as being an angry person, here I am lashing out at everyone.  To use the analogy, I'm shitting the bed all day long.  On purpose.<br /><br />Other problem is that when my ADD is out of control, everybody at work loves me.  I'm bubbly, outgoing, chatty, overly interested in their personal lives... I'm fun.  I'm the boss and I"m not letting them do their jobs.  But darn it, it's fun and I like to have fun!<br /><br />My shrink moved to a new practice. Because of a no-compete agreement with his previous employer, he's not allowed to see me for a year. I was devastated by this originally, now I'm seeing the light. <br /><br />New shrink in place.  I hate her and won't go back.  But we did talk about medicine.  I need it.  No matter how much I try to deny it.  Being stubborn against myself punishes me and everyone around me.  I have a problem and it has to be treated.  Sometimes treatments cause side effects.  My blood pressure can be dealt with if it becomes a problem again. <br /><br />I've been staring at the medicine, toying with the idea of taking it for a while now.  I finally bit the bullet yesterday morning and took it. <br /><br />It's supposed to take days-weeks to notice a difference.  I felt lighter by the afternoon.  Not like "everything's all better" kind of thing.  I just feel better.  Settled.  Peace negotiations have begun between my conflicting inner thoughts.  Calmer headed.  Not angry at all.  Organized in a good way.  I have a game plan for slowly digging myself out of my hole.  So stupid that I can't just do things without someone/something making me do them.  Oh well.  Things are going to get much better now!

Worst Architect in the World?

I never thought I'd be posting a photo of somebody taking a shower, but <a href="http://www.architectmagazine.com/marketing/new-old-spice-ad-the-worst-architect-in-the-world.aspx">Architect Magazine's item about a soap commercial</a> with "the Worst Architect in the World" prompted me to do just that. I'll admit that for most of the 18-second commercial the guy is more of a contractor than an architect, but by the time we see why he's the worst, it goes by so quickly it's hard to see just how many screwy things are going on. And -- wait for it -- a sizable majority of them are registered Democrats. The legislation would not allow student, county or municipal government identification to be used for verification purposes. Nor would public assistance photo IDs or public employee IDs be acceptable either.<br /><br />Why are such changes necessary? Could it be the two voter impersonation prosecutions between 2000 and 2010? No? The answer is all in the state's <a href="http://www.thenation.com/blog/175345/north-carolina-republicans-push-harsh-new-voter-id-law#axzz2ZQTtDplS">numbers</a>:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">316,000 registered voters don’t have state-issued ID; 34 percent are  African-American and 55 percent are registered Democrats.
