The new numbers originate from annual point in time data collected by local Continuum of Care groups across Virginia in January each year and compiled by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. <br /><br />Early in his administration, Governor McDonnell issued Executive Order 10 creating a housing policy framework, including policies to more effectively address the issue of homelessness. The resulting <i>Homeless Outcomes Advisory Committee Report and Recommendations</i> set the goal of reducing overall homelessness by 15 percent by 2013. The successful reduction of homelessness can be largely attributed to the shift in focusing resources to rapid re-housing, moving people into permanent housing more quickly while providing appropriate services through community resources.<br /><br />Senior Economic Advisor Bob Sledd and Dr. Bill Hazel, Secretary of Health and Human Resources, spearheaded the Homeless Outcomes Advisory Committee, which identified five primary goals to reach the targeted reduction in homelessness.  The collaborative efforts of many at the state and local levels and working through private and public agencies and organizations, including the National Alliance to End Homelessness, have provided the structure for this successful effort.  <br /><br />The reductions in homelessness have resulted from shifting some state resources from traditional shelter services to rapid re-housing. It lets the user choose among three mug shots of those arrested to answer a question. For instance, it asks, "who's from Raleigh" or "who is 73 years old" or "who is unemployed"? It attempts to make a joke out of those who are standing up for the middle class.<br /><br />If that's not your kind of humor, you also won't like the website's more insidious roster of arrestees which links their photo to information about each person's name, age, residence, race, occupation, employer and interest group memberships. So who is correct?<br /> <br /> Neither approach is correct if you are trying to achieve your best possible physique.<br /> <br /> Rather than see the potential benefits of both areas, people tend to place a priority on one over the other. This ends up leading them down a path towards failure, of course. For instance, if you ever hear somebody telling another person that your diet makes up 80 percent of your results and exercise only accounts for the other twenty percent, try to avoid falling into the same mentality.<br /> <br /> At the end of the day you should be applying both factors if you want to see results and maintain them. If you are trying to work out how to lose weight and you only apply the rules of one principle you will tend to fall into one of two categories, both of which can be seen at most gyms and workplaces around the world:<br /> <br /> * The person who consistently follows new eating plans, often picked up from celebrity gossip magazines or New Year weight loss plans. They don't combine this with regular exercise, though, and even though they are able to drop some pounds through a healthier lifestyle they don't actually look any healthier at all. They haven't worked out, so their body is no more toned than it was three months ago.<br /> <br /> * The person who seems to live in the local gym. They are there every time you walk through the door and they are still there when you leave, yet they certainly don't work there! These people are more than happy to do endless hours of cardio or throw the weights around, but the most they look into their eating habits seems to be a protein supplement when they're finished exercising. These folks are usually equipped with fairly well defined muscles in their shoulders, arms and chest but pair it with a pot belly or undefined, flabby abdominal muscles.<br /> <br /> The fact of the matter is that common sense must prevail if you are to get anywhere. If you are interested in dropping unwanted pounds and actually maintaining the results you should be avoiding falling into one of the two popular stereotypes shown above.<br /> <br /> It's almost like trying to decide whether fuel is more important than your car. At the end of the day, neither is very useful on their own. The correct approach is to apply both factors to your lifestyle and realize that neither is more important than the other. They are not in competition for your attention, they are two things which are designed to work together. 5 reasons unpaid Internships are ruining America

Internships are becoming more important in getting a first job – and they're increasingly unpaid. According to the New York Times, about <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/12/business/judge-rules-for-interns-who-sued-fox-searchlight.html">half of the million-plus internships taken by college undergraduates every year are unpaid</a>. More than 50 percent of current college graduates are estimated to have had at least two college internships. No data exists on how many recent college graduates take internships after college.<br /><div><br /></div><div>What sort of impact is this having? Noah Baron, from the New American Politics PAC,<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/noah-baron/your-unpaid-internship-at_b_488450.html"> argues</a>: </div><div><blockquote class="tr_bq">A neglected issue … which affects nearly every college student in the United States today is that of unpaid internships…. Their advisors often do not know they are working beyond their federal work study hours, and they are having trouble meeting assignment deadlines in class because they are working so much. When prioritizing their activities, work for pay comes first, internship or career enhancement comes second, and school work comes last. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">Learning to balance academic, work and life responsibilities quickly translates into juggling paid work, unpaid work, and work that you pay to do. Small wonder only <a href="http://collegecompletion.chronicle.com/college-stats/">half of those lazy college students actually survive until graduation</a>. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">The unpaid internship isn't even that valuable for students who do survive and graduate. The National Association of Colleges and Employers 2013 Student Survey found that “<a href="http://news.yahoo.com/employment-experts-predict-wave-lawsuits-unpaid-interns-192615927.html">while paid internships increased the likelihood of receiving a permanent job offer, unpaid interns fared only slightly better than students who did no internship at all</a>." </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><b>2. Unpaid Internships Have No Labor Rights: </b>Because they receive no income from the company, unpaid interns are not employees, and are therefore not protected <a href="http://www.epi.org/publication/pm160/">from sexual harassment</a>, <a href="http://www.sahrma.org/images/studentchapter_legal_issues.pdf">workers compensation</a>, or any other sort of employment regulations. Forced to work 10 hour days, or don’t get a lunch break? Nobody cares. Without payment, interns are technically volunteers and have no labor rights. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">However, interns are allowed to sue for negligence. <a href="http://www.hartfordbusiness.com/article/20130610/PRINTEDITION/306079969/that-summer-intern-may-be-legal-liability">And back pay</a>. And anything else that happens to them. That is, if they can afford it. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><b>3. Using Unpaid Interns Causes Massive Legal Liability Headaches For Businesses: </b>The <a href="http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs71.htm">Department of Labor internship guidelines</a> are very strict at for-profit institutions; you can’t replace workers or benefit from intern work, and you have to supervise interns with “training which would be given in an educational environment”. <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/06/the-court-ruling-that-could-end-unpaid-internships-for-good/276795/">The Atlantic observes</a> that: </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><ul><li>A summer full of filing, data entry, and occasional lunch run would appear to be utterly insufficient to meet this standard. Even internships used as college classes <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/03/business/03intern.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2">are suspect</a>:</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><ul><li>California and some other states require that interns receive college credit as a condition of being unpaid. But federal regulators say that receiving college credit does not necessarily free companies from paying interns, especially when the internship involves little training and mainly benefits the employer. </li></ul></blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><b>4. Unpaid Interns Drive off Good Talen: </b><a href="http://www.propublica.org/article/how-industry-loses-when-interns-go-unpaid">Research interns at ProPublica</a> argue that unpaid internships replace skilled workers:</blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">...the current arrangement between employers and unpaid interns is neither fair nor sustainable. The set-up — where organizations hire workers under pet names such as “apprentice” or “volunteer” and pass off full-time employees’ responsibilities without compensation — undermines a large pool of people in this country, typically young folks. Similarly, Washington’s job pyramid … doesn’t start at entry level; it starts at internship. Our area is now home to one of the largest intern-industrial complexes in the country, one that extends well past the bustling summer months.</li></ul></blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">These low-paid workers don't have much to spend, and so they aren't supporting the businesses in their community (or any business, for that matter. They aren't buying <a href="http://www.mainstreet.com/article/real-estate/gen-yers-delay-first-time-home-buying">homes</a>, and they aren't buying refrigerators or carpeting or furniture. </blockquote>Turns out, denying a significant section of the population good jobs with good wages hurts us all.</div>

But I am surprised at the rapid <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/21/paula-deen-fired-food-network-cancels-show-after-racism-scandal_n_3480517.html" target="_blank">cancellation of her show by the Food Network</a> because Deen admitted she used racial slurs in the past, even though she admitted that they were wrong and she no longer uses them.<br /><br />Given that Ergun Caner is now <a href="http://www.abpnews.com/ministry/people/item/8612-caner-sues-to-purge-video-from-web" target="_blank">aggressively trying to wipe the Internet of damaging video</a> of his decade of deceit, let's do a compare and contrast of Paula Deen to Ergun Caner:<br /><br />Paula Deen, TV personality  -  verus Ergun Caner, Baptist personality.<br /><br />Who would you hold to a higher standard? A TV chef, or a Baptist Preacher <br /><br />You would think we would hold Caner to a higher standard, especially since he is so popular as a youth retreat preacher.<br /><br />But sadly, our culture apparently holds Paula Deen to a much higher standard than we do a Baptist preacher who spends his summers preaching to young skulls of mush at youth retreats.<br /><br />Below are examples of Ergun Caner's racial and ethnic stereotypes he perpetuated from the pulpit over the last decade for which he was never held accountable for, or made to apologize for. Why did he get a pass on these? Probably because he spoke them AFTER he was able to convince audiences after 9/11 that he himself was some sort of minority - an immigrant "Turk", and "olive skinned" person - and thus he made these comments in that false context of being a minority himself.<br /><br />I will say this: there WAS one person I know of who has called on Caner to apologize for his remarks, and that was <a href="http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2010/04/mckissic-draws-attention-to-racial.html" target="_blank">Pastor Dwight McKissic.</a>  Dwight correctly <a href="http://dwightmckissic.wordpress.com/2010/04/07/attitudes-toward-race-in-sbc-life/" target="_blank">called Caner to apologize to FBC Jax</a> after he made remarks back in 2009 perpetuating stereotypes of blacks and Hispanics.<br /><br />Examples of Caner's ethnic slurs, from the pulpit, including the ones at Jacksonville:<br /><br />1. Female Self-Esteem, making fun of "ugly" girls - <a href="http://wbcmedia.sermon.tv/8567907" target="_blank">Gainesville, Westside Baptist Church</a> - June 2013<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>"A single preacher in churches is like blood to sharks, because in those country churches they would drag out mutant granddaughters out of closets for me...this ain't much to look at [himself] but I didn't want to marry a female of this [point to his face]....finally they would say 'I know the perfect one for him' and then she'd pull her out [of the closet], 'come here Bullah' [then he makes barking noises]."</b></span></i></div><br />So that is another aspect of the Ergun Caner legend and mystique...he can get away with the above  nonsense, even as recently as last week at <a href="http://www.westsidebaptist.org/" target="_blank">Westside Baptist Church in Gainesville</a>.<br /><br />And Paula Deen, you obviously picked the wrong field - you could have freely used racial and ethnic and even sexist stereotypes if you had become a Baptist preacher/seminary professor/youth camp leader.<br /><br />Oh, but wait, you're a woman, so that might exclude you in the SBC ranks....

party like its 1963 - 50th wedding anniversary

Happy Monday to all! Anything exciting to report? We had rain, with a side of rain and large helping of humidity. Summer in St. Louis y'all.<br /><br />So I blabbed long enough about this anniversary party I thought I should at least share a few pictures with you. My parents celebrated 50 years of marriage and in my book, 50 years of anything deserves a party. The hubs was on board and the weekend before the party he and I sat down and made a list of what we needed to get done each day that week to be ready for the party on Saturday. Teamwork is our middle name.<br /><br />Then Monday night the hubs got sick. Tuesday morning I had to take him to the ER and by Tuesday night he had an emergency appendectomy. Which was kind of weird because I didn't remember 'surgery' anywhere on our to-do list. <br /><br />Que increased stress level.<br /><br />And to add to the fun, surgery was followed by an infection which kept him in the hospital until late Friday. Coupled with a mystery plumbing leak, a surprise tree removal and a daily increased threat of rain, my stress level runneth over. <br /><br />I will save all of the gory details for cocktail hour, but needless to say by the time Saturday arrived I was just happy to have showered and brushed my hair. I didn't get as many pictures taken as I would have liked, and some are with my iPhone so they aren't the best quality but you'll get the idea. And we were lucky enough to have the talented <a href="http://www.ysstudios.com/" target="_blank">Jeremy Keltner</a> there during the party and he got some great shots as well.<br /><br />Lesson learned. As my great-grandfather always said - don't bother worrying because you will always be worrying about the wrong thing.<br /><br />So with all of that said, a great time was had by all and the party was a success. Our prayers and thoughts are going out to Emily, their entire family and the community of support helping with the day-to-day functioning.  I have a six year old daughter too.  This breaks my heart and cannot even begin to comprehend what they're going through.  <br /><br />This is where the mega guilt kicks in.  Boohoo me.  This isn't a real problem.  This is a problem in my head.  A problem I'm inventing.  I'm not satisfied.  Not many people are.  I have a good life, a husband who tirelessly provides for us and is a great daddy for the kids.  He does the laundry too!  We don't fight, we just get over things.  We have a roof over our head and food on the table.  Life goes on.<br /><br />Yesterday, I wrote full of emotion that was impossible to contain.  I'm afraid I came across as a sassy little brat... at least that's the way I'm reading it today.<br /><br />I would never dream of expecting/forcing this lifestyle (DD) upon anyone, especially someone I love.  It needs to be a mutual decision that happens only because it works for both people.  I would never hold a grudge against him for not wanting any part of this.  I would be appalled if someone tried to demand some other sort of horrid thing upon me.  I would <i>never</i> hold his resistance or refusal against him.  Not an outward hostility, nor would I carry an internal sense of being wronged that periodically creeps out as immaturity on my part.<br /><br />I will not expect or force him to accommodate my kinks.  The fact that my dreams and fantasies go to dark places isn't his fault.  The fact that I'm aroused by aggressive or violent things isn't his fault either.  None of that is what he signed up for.  There wasn't a quiz before we married.  That quiz wasn't there tell him how hard it would be to repress these feelings for the rest of my life.  I'm not what he signed up for.  He signed up for the girl who was hiding much of herself so she could fit into what he wanted.<br /><br /><br />Now, this is the part that I think I deserve 100% - Communication.  Plain and simple.  I don't care if he thinks no other husbands talk to their wives.  I want, need, and deserve this.  On two different levels too.<br /><br />The first part, we need to talk like we're friends and make time for just us.  I understand that he thinks date nights just aren't in the cards due to the kids and work.  We still need time to just talk about things other than the problems with this customer or that child.  I am proposing 5 minutes in bed a few times a week.  No tv, no sex (okay, sex waits until after), just us talking in the dark.  Perhaps in time...<br /><br />The second part is I think I have a right to have my feelings heard, even though I'm not agreed with.  No, I'm not talking about him being forced to sit through a lecture touting the benefits of spanking.  Simply that I think I have a right to feel _____ because of ______ and be able to say it to him without being thought of as crazy.  <br /><br />I think where this is hitting me in the gut is that I'm not asking him to talk about his feelings.  He doesn't have any lol.  Our marriage is fine on the public surface.  We're drifting apart on the inside.  He doesn't see a problem, therefore I shouldn't be looking for ways to fix a problem that doesn't exist in his eyes.  <br /><br />But then again... maybe the problems don't exist at all period.  The problems are merely my interpretation of the way things are.  My feelings aren't problems.  My wishes aren't problems.  <br /><br />In the big jigsaw puzzle of our family and friends, there's a specific spot designated for me, the spot where I fit in.  I wish the dog hadn't chewed on hubby's piece and I wish my piece wasn't so soggy from falling in the bathtub.  Then we could then fit a little tighter together and our colors would be crisper.  But wanting to take on a different shape isn't productive because I (or we) won't fit into the puzzle properly.  So in the end, truly nothing in my head matters in the big picture.  It doesn't matter because we're a family.

TINKER, TAILOR, WHISTLEBLOWER .....

Spy?</span></span></div><div class="article_date_3">By Alexander Holstein via</div><div class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.geopoliticalmonitor.com/" style="font-size: 10px;">Geopoliticalmonitor.com</a> </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor and so-called whistleblower who leaked classified information on numerous top-secret NSA surveillance programs, is the most damaging traitor in U.S. history.  That’s a pretty incendiary statement, especially considering the legions of overnight devotees—marquee name-plates, political heavyweights and Average Joe Six-Packs from both sides of the partisan equation—who have turned Mr. Snowden into a post-cyberpunk cause célèbre, media darling, and “hero” of individual freedom.  Mr. Snowden’s actions, however, could prove more damaging than those of traditional double agents such as Edwin Lee Howard, Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen.  On par perhaps with the most damaging spy of the entire Cold War—Kim Philby, the senior British intelligence officer and KGB mole who defected to the USSR, where he died as a Hero of the Soviet Union.<br /><br />That Mr. Snowden committed a flagrant breach of national security is without question.  The non-disclosures attached to his clearances and to which he was a signatory make that blatantly clear.  The real question, then, is whether or not that breach was warranted in the name of a greater moral good, namely uncovering illegal government activity that violates the Constitution of the United States and threatens the rights of the American people.<br /><br />Daniel Ellsberg, who famously leaked the Pentagon Papers, has declared Mr. Snowden the most important whistleblower in U.S. history.  But Mr. Snowden doesn’t fit the traditional whistleblower profile.  Ellsberg himself never fled the United States, but voluntarily stood trial on charges of espionage, which were dismissed.  Bradley Manning, the U.S. Army sergeant who dumped a truckload of classified material into the lap of Wikileaks, is now facing a military court martial, and has already pled guilty to 10 of the 22 charges brought against him.  Frank Serpico, the New York police detective who famously blew the lid off widespread corruption within the NYPD, not only exhausted every proper channel open to him before going to the press, but stayed on the job and took a bullet thereafter.<br /><br />Mr. Snowden, on the other hand, fled to—of all places—Hong Kong, which, of course, is in the People’s Republic of China, hardly a bastion of the electronic freedom for which Mr. Snowden claims to have martyred himself.  The PRC runs one of the most restrictive and intrusive internet regimes in the world—and not as part of a targeted effort to snare suspected terrorists, but in a blanket campaign to suppress the most basic human rights.  It’s like moving in with the Taliban in support of women’s lib.       <br /><br />Mr. Snowden claims he would not get a fair trial in the United States, because the U.S. government has already poisoned the jury pool by smearing him as a traitor.  Maybe he’s never heard of O.J. Simpson or Cayce Anthony, both tried and convicted in the media before being acquitted for murder. Far more Americans have come out in support of Mr. Snowden, believing him to be a whistleblower.  If he truly believes in the system that he claims he is trying to protect, in the Constitution itself, then wouldn’t he voluntarily return to the United States to stand trial for any charges brought against him?  As CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer stated on Face the Nation, “I don’t remember Martin Luther King, Jr., or Rosa Parks running off and hiding in China.  The people who ran the civil-rights movement were willing to break the law and suffer the consequences.  That’s a little different than putting the nation’s security at risk and running away.”<br /><br />The NSA programs that Mr. Snowden has compromised are not designed to read everyone’s e-mail and eavesdrop on their phone calls.  All they really do is collect phone numbers and the length of calls without identifying the subscribers themselves.  The so-called “secret courts” that oversee them under the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) restrict access to only specially cleared personnel who have been trained in FISA warrant procedures, and only when they establish a reasonable suspicion that any specific data to be examined relates to a foreign terrorist organization.  A recent article in the Washington Post describes the court, originally created under the Carter administration in 1978, as a “clandestine terrorism surveillance tribunal” and   “body of law separate from the one on the books.” Nothing could be further from the truth.  The use of the term “clandestine” alone is as misleading as it is erroneous; if the FISA court was truly clandestine, after all, then the government would have long denied its existence, which it never has.  The Post should know better.  Or maybe it doesn’t.  The same article goes on to claim that the court almost never turns down a warrant request.  However, former U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials involved in counter-terror surveillance operations have confirmed to Geopoliticalmonitor.com that FISA warrants are tougher than any other to obtain.  In fact, a former FBI intelligence analyst confirms that the process of securing and then ensuring proper compliance with a FISA warrant is so laborious that many agents prefer not to bother unless they are absolutely certain of an existing threat from the specific target of the requested surveillance.   <br /><br />In any case, Mr. Snowden has neither protected anyone’s rights nor freedom.  Despite his claims that he only leaked information about systems in order to protect people, his actions have put thousands of innocent Americans in harms way by damaging the ability of U.S. intelligence services and law enforcement agencies to connect the dots between suspected terrorists and their activities, making it more difficult, perhaps even impossible, for them to stop the next 9/11.  Congressional Democrats and Republicans agree that the NSA surveillance programs are vital to the national security of the United States.<br /><br />Not everyone buys Mr. Snowden’s whistleblower story.  Some, like former Vice President Dick Cheney, initially went so far as to suggest that he has been a Chinese spy, or mole, from the outset.  Mr. Snowden responded to the accusation by claiming that if he were a Chinese mole, he would have fled to Beijing where he would now be living like a king, rather than a desperate fugitive on the run.  Maybe.  Unless the Chinese themselves wanted to smokescreen their involvement, avoid the diplomatic fallout that most assuredly would rain down in the aftermath of such a Chernobyl-grade scandal.  How much better for them to cast their “Joe” as a whistleblower and have him blow away the NSA’s operations to the press.  How much better to gravely damage U.S. security, global prestige, and even the presidency.  How much better to hoodwink a large segment of the American population, including heavyweight influencers, into hailing Mr. Snowden as a hero, rather than have the entire country vilifying him as a traitor, and China as the enemy.  How much better to have that same large segment live in greater fear of its own government.  Actually, that would be rather Sun-Tzu of them.<br /><br />On this point, Mr. Snowden’s recent leap to Russia makes little difference.  In fact, fleeing China, seeking asylum elsewhere, leap-frogging countries- all this would only enhance his cover.  The Russians would be happy to play their part the charade, as long as the Chinese were willing to share the product.  Russia and China do maintain an intelligence cooperation treaty.  Both the Chinese and the Russians could also negotiate his safe passage to a third-party nation like Ecuador or Venezuela or Cuba, all of whom might grant Mr. Snowden asylum in exchange for Russian or Chinese largesse.  Would he be worth the trouble?  Considering all the trouble he alone has caused the United States, you bet.   <br /><br />The more likely scenario, however, is that Mr. Snowden is simply a self-serving narcissist who believes himself righteous in his actions; a loose cannon who thinks he knows better than anyone else what’s in the best interest of the American people, and, in the ascent of his own self-centered one-man dictatorship, the very Constitution he claims to be protecting gets ripped to shreds.  If not a spy already, he could still become one after the fact, trade further state secrets as part of a deal for asylum.<br /><br />To his supporters, all of this is at best far-fetched, and at worst part of a government dirty tricks campaign to smear their hero.  But all of these people need ask themselves one simple question: Would they still consider Mr. Snowden a hero if he were an FBI technician who blew away an undercover operation targeting online child sex traffickers using the same surveillance methods under a judicial warrant and congressional oversight?  Here, the only difference is the target.  Terrorists instead of pedophiles.  One thing is for certain: whether delusional narcissist or bona fide spy, as a traitor, Edward Snowden is feeding off the bottom of the same pond.</div><br />
